Astro-Apes! I wish this had been an animated series! It took a long time to assemble this family of rare British PotA knock-off characters—now my set is complete. Artemus and the Warrior Ape came as disintegrated shards of plastic inside dry-rotted clothes. I replaced the bodies and cleaned and resewed their outfits. The face sculpts are kinda great—cartoony, but detailed.

The Warrior Ape has a Flash Gordon helmet and jumbo ray gun. Artemis totes a mysterious tiny briefcase. Myra wears a yellowish space flower in her hair. Dr Zorma sports professorial glasses. And they’re all rocking their brown galactic pleather.

The header card features character art with an 8th-grade notebook feel and lets you know their names (collect them all!).

The Astro-Apes are probably the only knock-off toy line to have spin-off licensed mini inflatable versions. Assorted colors, full-body illustrations. You can often find these (and other great stuff) at I Had That Toy.

Space of the Apes!? The best packaging, featuring old, original PotA illustrations. The ape figures are knockoffs of the Tim Burton designs, with pinch of Worf the Klingon and Gimli the Dwarf thrown in. Expressive sculpts (my favorite is the ginger) and nice accessories. The collection I bought included 3 apes and 2 boring humans (I’ve seen images of another female human with armor—don’t know if more apes exist).

This is Crispin, your host/mascot here at Plastic of the Apes.

He’s a knock-off of Kenner’s Maskatron from their Six Million Dollar Man line—but with the added fun of an ape mask! I first learned about them on Plaid Stallions. It came from France, so I assume it is the French, not UK version.

After a long hunt I found this incomplete version that came with no original clothes and just the ape mask (the only one I really wanted, of course). I assembled his mod outfit: vintage Ken jacket and pants and new 1:6 turtle-neck, socks, shoes. Note groovy mutton chops.
