KoD but I try to make the MC on the cover
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay so obviously took a ton of creative liberty with this one since you can't really see her face but here's my rendition.
Bonus: Actual KoD MC in the cover look

pb needs to make ending up single in single LI books possible. so much pressure would be taken off the story and the romance and more importantly, it would help make everything feel less forced

If PB had the balls, we would’ve been able to pop off the moment that waiter walked up and offered Vic drinks on the house. But instead we have an MC who lets two Chads and all of her employees bitch her in her own club 💀 That’s mad embarrassing! Like shit this is a mob story!! I wanna see MC make heads roll, not slink away with her tail between her legs or throw dance parties 😒

I really love that a choice from way in the beginning of the book is brought up several times and actually effects the dialogue several chapters later.

Faith is hands down the best part of KoD and the plot so far would be a close second if mc had any tact. Or, y’know.. actually listened to people when they told her not to run head first into anything bc she didn’t get her way. When they genuinely let us be ruthless and badass it’s fun. That at least makes up for how uninteresting the Vic romance is. The bratty mc/strict parent trope needs to die in choices books. I’m SICK.

Kiss of Death is actually kind of decent when Vic isn’t there.

Honestly I'd much rather show up to a formal event in a Henley shirt and jeans than have to read this sort of bland-ass writing from picking a diamond outfit

Whether it's adopted as a child, a sibling, or however you like, which family would you rather join?
(For families that involve MCs and/or LIs, it's up to you however you view them. For example, you can choose to view the Rys family as including TRR MC and the princess, or you could choose to not include them since it's not technically canon)

Playchoices MCs - Part 11
Previous | Next
artist notes under the cut
Niobe Chase (TPA) | She puts James Bond to shame. I gave her a different stealth outfit because I'm tired of PB drowning female MCs in crop tops. There are other shirt types, thank you very much. Also scars and ✨muscles✨ because MCs deserve to be shredded too.
Gwyneira (GUIN) | If PB gives me a historical book, I will look up historical outfits and throw out every outfit PB gave me. It is a fact of life. Gwyneira's gown is a combination of Eleanor of Aquitaine's tomb effigy and some inspiration from 12th c. English queens. I went with 12th century fashion because that's when Guinevere is first mentioned in literature.
Fumie Ueno (KOD) | I cannot tell you the annoyance I felt after having lightly researched the Yakuza because I wanted to use the new Asian face in the book, given my MC a well though out Japanese name, only for me to open the book and see that her father's name is Beckham and her brother's name is Clyde. Her default name is Diamond. Make it make sense. I changed the gold to silver in her outfit because if goes better with her skin tone. I also gave her F!Trystan's snake earrings.
Maxine "Max" Thompson (GG) | Listen, I did the math. I'm declaring that Max's parents named her after Maxine Shaw (Attorney at Law) from Living Single. Max takes Type A personality to a whole new level and I love her for it.
Amika Fuller (RWB) | I was contractually obligated to put a red solo cup somewhere in Amika's portrait. I clearly decided to I wanted to practice rendering patterns for this set of MCs because I just noticed that 5/6 have a pattern somewhere on their clothes.
Cheyney Latimore (FCL) | Miss Steal-Your-Girl herself. Listen, she's messy, but she's my mess. The pins on her hiking bag are as follows: the flag for the state of Georgia (because I headcanon that the characters when to Clark Atlanta University instead of just Clark University), a pressed penny, the symbol of Uranus (it's a Sailor Moon reference), the lesbian pride flag, and the pin for Arches National Park.

I just can’t take the way KoD is trying to paint Vic and MC’s relationship as some tragic lovers turned enemies story seriously. ‘This doesn’t sound like the Vic I know’ girl you don’t know Vic. You’ve met them once when you were 15. What the fuck are you talking about.

I think I understand why Vic and MC are into each other now. It’s basically like “great minds think alike” but the opposite. They’re both dumb as hell so it’s no wonder they’re drawn to each other

Dont get me wrong, I like Vic, and I like the whole Romeo and Juliet "our mobster families are enemies but I'm still in love with you" trope, but the friends to lovers trope gets me every time.
But imagine this:
"You're still looking at the text from Vic when a hand closes over the screen of your phone. You look up into Faith's furious eyes as she jerks the phone out of your hand.
"Hey! Wha-" but you're interrupted by the hard pressure of your best friend's lips on yours and the sensation of her boxing you in on the couch you both are sitting on. She pulls back to glare at you while unbuttoning your blouse.
"I'll make you forget all about Vic Flint, even if it's the last thing I do."

Novel | Novel [translated]
Comments **contains spoilers**:
One day, Xu Rendong (MC) was returning home from work when he was almost hit by a truck. But right when he was about to be hit, an elevator appeared, sending him into another world. To live, he has to find the elevator and elevator button within the world that would enable him to escape. The problem was, the world was filled with deadly monsters. Fortunately, he was able to restart the world every time he died.
Similar to Kaleidoscope of Death, characters who were about to die were sent into different worlds - those that survived and found the elevator and its button can take the elevator back to their own world, whereupon they would extend their lifespan. Those that didn’t would also die in the real world. Also in a way I find similar to KOD, the ML (Lian Qiao) was someone who carried a mystery and was introduced as being not-too-serious at the start. Here, ML was a streamer who was also a puppy dog that gets worked up by the gory scenes. However, he was able to deal with the monsters more effectively than MC using his gamer knowledge/instinct, plus a dangerous hidden personality that surfaces occasionally.
Highlights:
What makes this novel unique is that MC was able to restart the world again when he dies, allowing him to accumulate experience and survive through trial-and-error. What this also means is that MC is portrayed as a normal person. Unlike other infinite flow novels where the main pairing has a ton of luck or where they are OP, the main pairing in this novel are mostly normal people (minus ML’s hidden side who comes out from time to time) who constantly fail and have to re-do things again. Through the novel, we can see that the MC is sometimes scarred from his previous ‘cycle’, which affects his behavior in the next cycle of rebirth. Sometimes, it even prevents him from moving forward because he is so mentally and emotionally worn out.
I love the times when the characters or the narration would make a statement that jumped the fourth wall (e.g. character making the comment: “if you say anymore, the novel would be locked!”. They just make for such fun mental double-takes.
All the worlds are very interesting and the concept of having a key player in the world is exciting. It definitely amps up the stake when the MC or one of the side characters I like become a key player. Depending on how many worlds the key player survived, their presence could drastically increase the difficulty of the world. For example, there was a player called Shi Jianchuan who was in his last world. His presence alone increased the difficulty of the world so much so that 80+ players were pulled into that world (more players = higher the difficulty of the world) and only one person could survive (although MC and ML used special means to survive).
The mysteries surrounding MC’s constant resets and ML’s hidden personality also kept the story going. We are constantly teased by other more experienced characters about ML’s dark side, so there is an urge to continue reading just to figure out what is going on. Similarly, every time they survived a world, pieces of clues were given to MC regarding the cause of his resets.
Shortcomings:
The mechanics regarding the difficulty of the worlds are still a bit confusing to me. It doesn’t seem quite fair if a new player is pulled into another player’s last world, they would basically become fodder. The last explanation about how MC resets himself, while already hinted at, does seem to come as a surprise - we weren’t told about the wish mechanic or about the rooms of gears and boxes, so it does read as a bit forceful where the author attempts to tie all the clues together.

Ranking of "obligatory best friend for the MC" characters (like Bree from HFTH, Jenny from TNA, Malorie from Surrender, Faith from KOD, and any others I missed. From best (or least terrible) to worst. Go.
Sorry this took so long, I finally got around to making the list (which is actually going to be worst to best sorry anon).
So before we actually get into the list, there are a couple of (loose) criteria I had for determining who would be included in the list. One, no love interest best friends are allowed, so no Zoey, Jaime, Lily, etc. Two, it had to be CLEAR that the character in question was the MC's best friend. For instance, the OPH MC doesn't have a clearly defined best friend, so I avoided including any of the roommates on the list, same with Zeph from TE because it's not totally clear who the MC's best friend is.
22. Jenny (The Nanny Affair). I hate Jenny. I hate her I hate her I hate her. She is my enemy. She's boring, uncool, unfunny, and serves no real purpose in the story. She's useless. And worse, the MC enables Jenny and Aditya's affair. Boo. Boooooooooo.
21. Malorie (Surrender). Malorie isn't as awful as Jenny, but my god, she has no filter. And that's coming from an autistic person. Malorie spews the creepiest, grossest, out of pocket shit, AT HER WORKPLACE NONETHELESS. The writers try to play it off as funny but it's not. It's really creepy. If I were her coworker I would feel incredibly uncomfortable around her every day.
20. Bree (Home For the Holidays). Undoubtedly the most forgettable "best friend" on this list. I'm going to bet no one remembers her because she did nothing and was a Nothing Character.
19. Mandy (Untameable). Boring, bland, does nothing of note in the story except fall for our misogynistic brother. Blech.
18. Eddie (Rising Tides). Another Nothing Character, but helps the MC in a small way. He's a reused asset.
17. Nigel (A Very Scandalous Proposal). Another Nothing Character, but helps the MC in a slightly bigger way. He's also a reused asset.
16. Nadia (Perfect Match). Definitely my most controversial ranking on this list. Nadia always got on my nerves and I never cared about her as a character. She just...consistently annoyed me.
15. Chazz (Red Carpet Diaries). Chazz also annoyed the hell out of me, but slightly less than Nadia. I found nothing about him compelling.
14. Layla (Wolf Bride). She didn't serve a purpose in the story, and wasn't terribly interesting. She is the very definition of the Obligatory Best Friend because there was no one else in the pack who would've befriended the MC. Also, I'm severely tokophobic and every time she appeared in the story I got really lightheaded and sometimes had to put the app down for a few minutes.
13. Riya (Ride or Die: A Bad Boy Romance). Riya didn't do much in the story either, and the most interesting part of her character was her relationship troubles with Darius, which really wasn't interesting at all.
12. Faith (Kiss of Death). I am tentatively ranking Faith at number 12 because I haven't played much of KOD (non-VIP) but she's not terrible from what I've seen so far.
11. Faye (The Princess Swap). A lot of people strongly disliked Faye, but I honestly didn't mind her. She's kind of ditzy and absent-minded, but she's not actively harmful, nor is she bland on the same level as most of the others on the list. However, she's far from perfect.
10. Amy (With Every Heartbeat). Amy isn't a terrible character. She helps the MC and Dakota and wishes them the best even though Dakota is her ex. She's not super present in the story, though, but I liked her well enough.
9. Aveline (The Princess Swap). Aveline is honestly so goated for keeping the MC and her sister's secret throughout the story. She's kind and very loyal and is someone I'd love as a real friend. Unfortunately, she isn't really her own person and doesn't have a lot background-wise.
8. Maggie (Ms. Match). Props to Maggie for being one of three characters in Ms. Match I actually liked. She was a competent assistant and was really sweet without falling all over the MC.
7. Poppy (Hero). Poppy Patel is the only valid Poppy in Choices. She's got a killer sense of style, is funny, sweet, and is immensely loyal to your character. I hated the unnecessary drama between her and Dax, but I really liked seeing them actually get together because they just work.
6. Vivian (The Phantom Agent). Vivian and Rowan were the only two characters in TPA I could actually stomach. Vivian is smart as hell, brave as hell (she helps GAIA even though she was initially terrified), and let's be honest. She was the REAL hero. Vivian probably has back problems now because she CARRIED that team.
5. Briar (Desire & Decorum). Briar is kind of chaotic and I love that. Her best friend moves away to a noble estate and she's immediately like "sounds fly as hell, I'm down" and becomes her lady's maid. Honestly though, that's also kind of my biggest complaint about her. Her life is so MC-centric. I mean, she even names her baby after the MC. Nonetheless, she's otherwise really likable to have around and serves as the MC's closest confidant throughout the series.
4. Dionne (Foreign Affairs). Dionne is really sweet, kind of goofy at times, smart, and generous. IIRC it's stated that she volunteers at an animal orphanage. It's too bad FA was such a flop because I really liked Dionne (AND MURPHY!!!)
3. Alma (Mother of the Year). Alma is really kind but also flips a switch and becomes kind of a hard ass in like an instant. It's hilarious and I love it, and I love her. Alma truly was the backbone of MOTY and she helped the MC so many times.
2. Zack (The Freshman). Zack is the only one of the MC's friends who deserved the title of best friend, which is a title he thankfully actually got otherwise he wouldn't be on this list. He was always there for her even when the others were absorbed in their own drama and though he wasn't perfect, he was definitely the least problematic of the bunch.
1. Diego (Endless Summer). Who else could I put at number 1 other than Diego? No one, that's who. Diego was so gentle and kind and even though he'd had a rough time making friends, had a homophobic family, and later on in the series gets stuck with the Vaanti for six months, he never let his bad experiences make him a bitter person. He was friendly to absolutely everyone in the group and there was no drama to be spoken of with him. Diego was such a loyal best friend to not just the MC, but to everyone around him. And his catalyst idol reflects that: he was Canis, and the Endless even refers to him as "my loyal Diego" as they're remembering all their friends just moments away from death. Diego truly is one best friend to rule them all.
