Do u think Kratos was sad when atreus started doing things (like climbing and getting up on tall ledges) by himself....
i don't think he would admit it outwardly but i think he would hesitate for a moment if Atreus was suddenly climbing up ahead of him instead of clambering onto his back.
Atreus would ask if he's coming, and Kratos would grumble, or not even say anything at all and follow. But suddenly climbing doesn't feel right. He feels too light, and it's all so strange. He doesn't have the words for it - can't bring himself to accept the persistent feeling of melancholy as they make it attop the ledge they were scaling.
"Did you see me? I climb pretty fast huh!"
Atreus is celebrating, proud of himself, he doesn't need to rely on his father anymore.
He doesn't need to rely on his father anymore.
Kratos can only bring himself to nod at his boy, he hopes he hasn't given away his internal turmoil.
He knows there will be many more times like this to come. He knows one day, Atreus won't need his help at all. Will he be ready?

I like the little detail of Loki's screwups being included in God of War in that every time Loki makes a mistake or screws up in some way, the way he solves it ultimately gives him and his allies something good in return.
In the og myths, Loki fucks up a LOT. But he always manages to get something positive out of it as well. He gets drunk and chops off Sif's hair? He gets Mjolnir for Thor. He convinces the Aesir to agree to agree to the stone mason deal to build the wall only for them to nearly be forced to marry Freya off to him when it backfires? He gives birth to Sleipnir and gives him to Odin.
Atreus released Garm and he's tearing through the realms? Atreus gets to reunite with his family and even manages to put Fenrir's soul into Garm, giving them a huge wolf that is totally loyal to Kratos and Atreus who can open tears in between realms which ultimately saves them all in Ragnarok. Atreus disobeys his father and runs away to Asgard? He not only makes allies in Thrud/Skjoldr that help out later but also gives him knowledge and put him in conflict with Heimdall which then pushes Kratos to kill him early, giving them control over when Ragnarok starts. Atreus seeks Freya out without Kratos' knowledge and almost gets murdered by her? He ends up giving her the information about realm travel which eventually leads to her deciding to work with Kratos to get her freedom, delaying her revenge and setting her on the path of moving beyond her pain to fight Odin. Atreus ends up going to Ironwood on accident and is missing for two days but refuses to tell anyone? He learns soul magic which he later uses to stop Odin, creates Jormungandr who is the reason they got anything done in God of War (2018), and he makes an invaluable ally in Angrboda whose knowledge and disobedience of fate help them survive Ragnarok.
Loki is the vehicle of change in every story he's in. Without Atreus doing what he does, acting out, causing chaos and being Loki, Odin and Asgard would've won the war. Every mistake Loki makes ends up doing something good in the long term. He is the one that pushes Kratos to get involved and to open his heart to others' suffering.
Without Atreus, nothing would've changed and Odin would've won.

Can you imagine if, seeing Sindri so broken, after the funeral, Kratos had had the chance to quietly tell him that he also lost a brother? A brother who he deeply loved. Who he loved so much he wasn’t able to name his child after him, because he couldn’t bear being reminded of Deimos every time he thought of his son. A brother who he had also looked for and tried desperately to save, only to lose him forever.
In fact, they both lost their brothers twice. They both thought they had found them again only for it all to be ripped away.
Kratos understood exactly the kind of grief Sindri was going through, how heartbreaking that he wasn’t able to tell him so.

I continue to adjust resolution of old GOW cutscenes.
Here I compilated two frames from Kratos's agony visions from GOW2 to see Ares's calm expression. Firstly in this scene he looked very concerned by Kratos's death and then told him "Fight, spartan" (I know, it was Gaia's voice, but how interesting anyway).
I carefully closed his mouth in editor, and ?? While Athena on a background has cruel pleasure on her face, Ares looks... sympathetic?!
And what's remarkable, deep inside of his mind Kratos doesn't posess Ares as evil figure and hateful enemy. If you rewatch this scene, you will see that in a vision with Lysandra and Calliope's death, which captured his feeling of an absolute helplessness, there is no Ares at all. Only Kratos himself and Athena.
And then vision of Ares, who tells him to fight for himself and closes his eyes forever. His flame flows into the vision of the sleeping naked woman in bed. So even if he doesn't say this, Kratos associates Ares not only with his loss but also with seeking solace.. And help. Because Ares helped him, when he asked for it. Athena in her turn did not. Kratos's life became a chaos after Athena made him a god, and the only one comfort zone in this sea of endless despair was war. War is familiar. And understandable. War is sincere, it doesn't lie (unlike Athena!!1), it fully accepts Kratos and his nature.
So as Ares himself.

my god of war hot take is that the games have always been a parody of toxic masculinity behind male action heroes, even if not intentional during the greek era (or at the least presented awkwardly) bcuz it's 100% intentional during the norse era, and people who claim that kratos has "gone soft" are completely missing the point ESPECIALLY the point of the norse era, in this essay i will-- (GETS FUCKING SHOT)

Bro am I the only one that has eternal beef with Atreus from gow? Like I get he's supposed to be a very troubled, impulsive little shit but my god, the mf has been getting on my nerves for 4 years. I literally feel Kratos exasperation everytime the little shit does something dumb or impulsive.

thinking about how atreus didn't really get any of kratos's features — he doesn't have his dark hair or his yellow eyes or his olive brown skin, he's a perfect carbon copy of his mother. her red hair, her blue eyes, her pale skin, can you imagine what that must be like for him?? seeing so much of his mother when he looks in the mirror, how much he must miss her when he sees his own face? can you imagine what it must be like for kratos, to see so much of faye in their boy's eyes?
#chatter#god of war#atreus#kratos#i say ''can you'' because *I* can ! because ive lived this !!#losing a parent when you're young that you grow up looking like a 1 to 1 recreation of#and having your other parent see them in you every time they see you#not to get like. Super Personal but#my mother has literally burst into tears seeing my eyes when i take sunglasses off because they're just my dad's eyes#and the thought of atreus dealing with the similar feeling of seeing someone who gave you life in your own face after theyre gone#is comforting but also pains me to imagine him thinking of#the thought of atreus growing his hair out during his journey to find the giants and ends up looking even more like his mother#or the thought of him finding *comfort* in their similarities‚ like shes still there in the smile they share#i also cant help but feel like that might be a reason for the disconnect between kratos and atreus before they mended their relationship#like kratos already feels he's not worthy to be atreus's father and when atreus is born he looks nothing like kratos#and kratos is *relieved* because atreus wont have to grow up with the ghost of sparta's eyes#and its easier to distance himself for atreus's sake and divorce himself from the role of father#so atreus can take even more after his mother that he already looks exactly like#but then she dies and kratos is left with his son who looks just like his mother‚ with her eyes and her mannerisms and her lessons#and not an ounce of kratos's influence in his life#and kratos has to deal with that and come to terms with that and be there for atreus#and he does! even if there a moments where his throat feels tight seeing the quick flashes of faye in atreus's features#and his heart hurts because he misses her so much#but he loves atreus more than his heart hurts in grief#anyways#im emo over the kratos-faye-atreus family and have my own issues to work through can you tell

Character analysis: Kratos and Lloyd
Why give Lloyd the locket? Why send Kratos to Derris-Kharlan?
At first I thought it was weird that Kratos gives Lloyd his locket in the Kratos-route in game. Like imagine if your dad gave you the baby photos he kept in his wallet? Like wtf would a kid do with that, it’s a dad thing to keep around. That thing would would do more good for Kratos, all alone in Derris Kharlan anyways. His office being plain and having no decorations is canon. He deserves a family picture up there.
But writing and trying to understand what goes on in his head made me get it. Kratos in game has a habit of giving Lloyd literally everything. Spoiled kid. He doesn’t question the “why”, he either shows Lloyd how to get it, or gives it to Lloyd on a silver platter. He’s fuelled by immense guilt and is doing everything to make up for it.
Early on in game Lloyd voices his frustrations to Kratos more than once about not knowing anything about his parents. I think Kratos was trying to give Lloyd a memory of his family, before all the bloodshed and trauma, since Lloyd wanted to remember so badly. Parents was the topic of the day in their Flanoir scene. Their relationship was good enough at that point that Kratos was comfortable enough to allow Lloyd to acknowledge Kratos as family. Lloyd goes easy on him at the fight before Origin, because he understands how much Kratos actually cares when he sees that Kratos kept that locket with him the whole time.
In every other route, Kratos would still be sulking, and give Lloyd everything EXCEPT a memory of them as a family so that Lloyd can move on without his shitty father. Lloyd does not hold back and severely injures him with all of his pent up frustration. I’m a fan of Kratos’ character but I truly believe he is a terrible father during ToS. He’s only doing what he does to make himself feel better, it’s not really about Lloyd, it’s really about his feelings and his guilt.
Lloyd understands people pretty well. He gets that from Dirk for sure. Maybe Anna.
So while Dirk is right that some part of Lloyd wanted to go with him, there’s an even bigger part that knows Kratos needs to work on himself. “He’s got his own things to do.”
Because if anyone else in his party were to go to a different planet to save a race, he wouldn’t let them go by themselves right? If it was Colette, or anyone else he had a high affection with he would go on that journey together. The entire plot of ToS begins because Lloyd is NOT the type of person to let the people he cares about journey alone to save people.
Does he realize this means he may never see his dad again? Absolutely.
Is there a possibility Kratos was looking for a place to die out in space? Lloyd knows this.
Why does Lloyd still send him off? Lloyd trusts him enough to understand that “there’s no meaning in dying”. Getting sent to Derris Kharlan is literally serving a lifetime sentence in solitary. Kratos needs this for himself, to ease the immense guilt that he has. If it was about Lloyd, he would have stayed and made up for lost time and done everything he can to help him in his goals. He is the only human who knows all the secrets of the world and has the most experience in leadership, diplomacy, and guiding the masses when the planet itself changes. He is the most powerful ally Lloyd will ever have in the regenerated world. The option to let Derris Kharlan complete a 100 year cycle on its own is also there since it’s not like the angels will die, nor would the lifeless beings do anything other than ordered. (What, like they’re going to die of hunger or old age with those Cruxis Crystals?) And he's forgetting that the Desians ALSO need to atone and he can't atone for them. Kratos has the option to just dump everyone there and procrastinate finding a place for the half-elves of Cruxis until the comet completes its orbit and returns to Aselia.
But he doesn’t stay. Because it’s not about helping Lloyd.
He’s a weak man who pushes everything on his child, including the absolution of 4000 years worth of guilt and disregards how his child feels. He’s so used to lying that he’s disguised his selfishness under “I’m doing this for my son” but it’s not. He loves his kid for sure, but Kratos’ one and only motivation is guilt.
Guilt for failing to take care of Mithos as he promised Martel. Guilt for making a mess of the world. Guilt for killing Anna. Guilt for being Lloyd’s father, because that fact alone almost got him killed several times.
He tends to make the wrong decisions because his focus isn’t actually on morality or to a certain extent, family. There’s a scene in Tales of Fandom where he tells Mithos he’s ok with Lloyd living out his days as a monster and it doesn’t matter as long as he’s alive so pretty please spare his life. Disgusting. The foundations of his actions are all about how to make himself feel better, and acting on that selfishness often times makes things worse.
TLDR; Kratos sucks. Lloyd understands Kratos better than Kratos does.

anyways it’s implied that kratos loses a lot of his godly powers when he destroys the greek pantheon so a) the fact that he’s still running around killing and breaking with very little sweat is so funny people are constantly like “no the god killer won’t kill these gods” and he in fact does give him a challenge, b) the fact that kratos only ever gives in to his rage and destructive instincts when atreus is even mildly threatened … no one would think kratos had a power loss where atreus is concerned, man goes from ripping gods in half because they looked at him wrong to making every realm know he would and will die for atreus but not before taking all the threats out first

One detail that makes me sad about the new GOW is that the blood always just vanishes. I just think it would be hilarious for Kratos and Atreus to just be covered in blood. Like little baby Atreus after he goes a little nuts and stabs the troll at the start trying to rub the blood off his face with his sleeve and Kratos just grumbles and goes and wets a cloth to wipe it off? Freya just seeing this massive man and tiny child absolutely drenched in blood and just sighing because Kratos, what the fuck? Sindri just puking when he sees a piece of some monster's guts stuck inbetween a piece of armour? That would be hilarious.

❝ you think my anger is irrational? ❞ || from Beth @ whoever you're feeling... we're so back 😎
from: god of war ragnarok starters [src]
"… I think it is distracting."
So he did find it irrational, at least for the circumstances.
It was not hard to dig beyond the few words Kratos spoke. He wore it in his expression; weaved it into his tone. As low, gruff, and blunt as his manner of speech was, it too revealed just enough about his inner thoughts to tip of most of those who'd spoken to him. It was something, try hard as he did over the years to let go of, that he just… couldn't. Not when he'd fled Greece, barely able to keep himself on his own two feet as his gut bled. Not as he'd passed through Egypt, hearing the whispers of the land's own troublesome series of events. Even once he'd gotten to these new realms, found himself within the grasp of Midgard, could he have hidden it. That was what had drawn Laufey to him; what made them complete with one another. She could read him, and he could her. Yet when it came to Atreus…
Now wasn't the time to let his mind wander more than it has been.
He was just as distracted, and the boiling anger building around him—within him—wasn't exactly helping make things any clearer. So he simply watched Beth, giving a nod and looking ahead to wherever it was the pair had found themselves going.
