‘Vocally I’ve been influenced very much by a lot of strong women or men who sing in quite a feminine way. When I first heard PJ Harvey’s album Dry, it was kind of a revelation because it was the first time that I’d heard something that was so bare or so honest, and something that carried such an emotional weight - it was kind of a window into her pain [...] when I heard it I thought “this is the music I want to make, this is the emotional intensity which I want to try and achieve”. … Another very emotional strung out woman was Kristen Hersh, and I was quite obsessed with the first Throwing Muses album. And for a long time I just tried to imitate to a certain degree the way that she sang. She seems to take her voice to a point where it has a tendency to break so I was trying to achieve those points as well. …When I was at college, I was listening a lot to Jane’s Addiction and the Pixies. So you had Black Francis who possibly looks like the most unfeminine of men singing quite a high pitched yelp. Jane’s Addiction Perry Farrel was quite a strange pan - kind of - sexual figure with a very intense, quite high, voice.  … I also adore Janis Joplin and Billie Holiday. That kind of abandon that you hear in their voices really, really touches me, and, the idea for me was to try and make music that tried to go to people’s hearts.’   - Brian Molko (1996) x

More Evil S3 finale thoughts, Leland Townsend edition.
Leland wins.
Well, pro tem .. at least until the first episode of Season 4 (when he’ll probably be tipped back onto his arse again). It’s not something I thought I’d be able to say to any degree before this last episode though.
After failing to murder his actual target last week, but succeeding in messily removing Msgr. Hersh Korecki (he got in plenty of knife work as they tumbled down that staircase), he drags himself home, wrings out his victim’s blood into a bucket, sets it beside his bed and proceeds to knock one out. It’s very Leland. Life gives you lemons, right?
I thought we’d had the culmination of the Bouchard girls vs Leland Townsend when they got him tipped out of the Church. But this episode they go one better and blow the whole ‘Andy’ scheme.
When Sheryl rings him to let him know (ringtone on point btw), for a moment he seems about to throw another epic shit-fit. Then he laughs. And laughs. And sings!
At this point I probably should have started to realise he was holding something in reserve that we hadn’t been let in on.
But given the kicking he’s had this season, the number of times he’s eaten canvas (largely at the hands of kids), I was still completely stunned when he pulled out the steel chair from nine months in the past and smacked Kristen in the face with it.
I mean, what the Hell!

Kamikaze Nurse — Stimuloso (Mint)
Tumblr media
Stimuloso by Kamikaze Nurse
Kamikaze Nurse kicks up a blinding scree of guitar sound and tempers it with melody, its two female singers bending white hot noise towards pop. Like Sonic Youth if fronted by the honey-dipped tones of the Sundays’ Harriet Wheeler, or like Cocteau Twins with more abrasion and sass, this second full-length updates and skews the shoegaze template. It’s kickier and more empowered than its 1990s forebears, willing to insert gossip-y spoken word intervals about crushing on the guy who fixes your car.
This is the second full-length from the Vancouver dream rock foursome, who, in addition to the two women— KC Wei and Sonya Eui — on guitar and bass respectively, include Ethan Reyes on guitar and John Brennan on drums.  Stimuloso is considerably more sharply delineated than 2019’s Bucky Fleur, possibly thanks to Greg Saunier’s hand at the mixing desk, and there’s a clear aesthetic: a pounding, blurring rain of guitars leavened by half-dreamed, tuneful vocals.
There are subtle variations. “Boom Josie” is bright and emphatic with its careening chorus and hooting, fluting vocals. The instruments are all clear and legible – the hard-slashed strumming, the wandering, thoughtful bassline, the crisp drumming—and yet there’s a definite swirl and swoon to the piece. It’s like an unusually realistic dream, brightly colored, sharp and driven by its own internal logic. “Come From Woods” is quieter at first, picked out on acoustic guitars and sung at a murmur but bubbling with suppressed, giddy energy. That energy explodes in a burst of drumming and a wild caterwauling of rock sounds. It reminds me a lot of Kristen Hersh’s recent material, both under her own name and with 50 Foot Wave, sparkly melodic but amped to oblivion.
“Pet Meds” is an odd, intriguing window into this band’s inner workings, beginning in a furious drum roll and opening out into an ascending onslaught of vocal and guitar sounds. The two women break, mid-cut, to discuss hunky mechanics, the rock chick lifestyle and the proper pronunciation of Neu! in a way that suggests the effortless chemistry between the principals. The guitars here are about as Sonic Youth-like as any on the disc, but with none of the arty seriousness that Kim Gordon brought to the mix. This is fun stuff, a splintering roar lit up by female energy comfortable with itself at play.

1/26/22.
Jana Horn (Austin, Texas) "Optimism" has its feet firmly planted in several eras. It's hard not to hear Vashti Bunyan (new book/reissue on Monorail Music), Diana Darby, Josephine Foster or even early Throwing Muses Kristen Hersh.
Philadelphia's No Quarter Records is releasing this gem.

Throwing Muses - Snakeface
From another criminally underrated masterpiece, 1995′s University. I’ve sung its praises before, but listening to it today reminded me of its greatness.
