Study shows gaming improves peer relationship problem-solving
ORLANDO, Florida – If you have a teen in your home, you probably worry that they are spending too much time shooting things up or living in a virtual world. But it’s not all bad. According to a Saint Edward’s University study, playing video games two hours a day improves peer relationships and increases sociality. Teenager and gamer David Correa said, “I like creative games like Rob-Alan or Minecraft.” David Correa, 17, is an avid gamer — spending three to four hours a day connected to his screen. “It helps with distressing,” says Correa. New science shows video games can help young people with problem-solving. According to the American Psychological Association, people who play shooter games like Call of Duty improve their capacity to think about objects in three dimensions, just as well as school classes that are designed to enhance the same skill. More teens reported playing strategic video games, such as role-playing games, the more they improved in problem solving and school grades the following year. Children’s creativity was also enhanced. “It triggers something in your head that makes you feel more reactive and more snappy,” David says. Another stereotype the research challenges is the socially isolated gamer. “I meet a lot of friends usually,” says David. More than 70 percent of gamers play with a friend. David also added, “I met my girlfriend playing Valerie. We started talking, and now we’ve been dating for over a year and a half now.” The research also showed that video games are effective tools for learning resilience in the face of failure. By learning to cope with ongoing failures in games, the authors suggest that children build emotional resilience they can rely upon in their everyday lives. However, keep in mind investigators also found that more than nine hours of gaming a week for kids seven to 11 is not recommended and could be linked to social and behavioral problems. Chris Perez reflects on his life with, without Selena, and her legacy 25 years later - via KSAT.com
SAN ANTONIO – In the past 25 years, Chris Perez says he has grown a lot.
“I’m constantly learning and I’m happy,” Perez, the widower of Queen of Tejano music Selena Quintanilla Perez, said in an interview with KSAT.
Twenty-five years ago, Selena’s career was skyrocketing before her life was tragically and infamously cut short on March 31, 1995, when she was fatally shot.
While the Tejano music world grieved her death, the loss hit Perez even harder because two days later, April 2, would have been Chris and Selena’s third wedding anniversary.
“I thought I was done, that was it,” Perez said.
Since then, he has found his voice and learned to celebrate his wife’s legacy.
“The energy and her presence is felt a lot more that time of year and now her legacy and the things that people tell me and what she means to them, it’s a good thing,” Perez said.
He said he’s amazed — but not surprised — how Selena’s legacy has grown 25 years later.
“It just keeps getting bigger and bigger and I think its an amazing thing and I’m proud to be attached to it in the way that I am,” Perez said. “She had a lot of gratitude towards everybody that supported us, supported her and I think it came across and people feel the energy now.”
Over the past several months, Perez has been busy creating a new line of hot sauce and this month he released new music with “The Chris Perez Band.”
When he’s not in the studio or winning golden chili awards for his hot sauce, he spends his time with his 21-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son.
“I love being there for my kids,” Perez said.
In regards to his future, there is no slowing down.
“I want to keep going, keep pushing forward, you know I got this far,” Perez said.
This year a tribute concert will be held at the Alamodome honoring Selena. Originally scheduled for May, the concert has been postponed amid the pandemic.
While Perez was not at the announcement for the concert, he says he would love to be a part of it.
“I did get invited to be a part of the event,” Perez said. “I’d love to be there and see everybody, there’s a lot of love there between all of us and I’d love to see all the guys in the band too. I was kind of hoping we’d be able to play together, but we’ll see.”
And to Selena’s fans who continue to keep her legacy alive, Perez said: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It means so much and I want to stay on this ride with everybody.”

Texas investigating allegations that unaccompanied migrant children are being abused, sexually assaulted in San Antonio
The governor did not know the identities of those who alleged assault, nor did he provide many details. He said he was concerned more than one child may have been assaulted.
Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday called for the federal government to close a San Antonio facility housing unaccompanied migrant children after he became aware of allegations of sexual assault.
“In short, this facility is a health and safety nightmare,” Abbott said at a press conference outside the Freeman Coliseum, which is reportedly housing more than 1,300 teens who recently crossed the U.S.-Mexico border without a parent or guardian.
The announcement came as Texas and the federal government are locked in battle over a recent increase in the number of migrants crossing the state’s southern border.
Abbott said complaints about sexual assault were reported early Wednesday to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services as well as the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. The governor did not know the identities of those who alleged assault, nor did he provide many details. He said he was concerned more than one child may have been assaulted. He also said that DPS will investigate the allegations.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to questions after Abbott's announcement.
The press conference, Abbott said, was to alert President Joe Biden’s administration and push them to move the children housed in the coliseum to other federally run facilities with more “space, personnel and resources to ensure safety.” He also said the facility was short on staff, some kids were not eating enough food and those infected with the coronavirus were not separated from healthy teens.
A spokesperson for Abbott said the governor told federal officials about the allegations before the press conference.
Rebeca Clay-Flores, a Bexar County commissioner, painted a different picture of the conditions than the governor described, however. She said, having been in the facility many times, she saw children being well cared for. The Freeman Expo Center in San Antonio, which KSAT-TV reported held 1,370 teens on Monday, has the ability to house up to 2,500 children, according to the federal health department.
“What I saw when I went in there on several occasions, it was well-staffed, the children are very happy and very excited to be here,” she told reporters after Abbott left. “This is not a political issue. This is about children who deserve protection from adults.”
Abbott acknowledged to reporters that he had not been inside the coliseum.
Vulnerable children are often victims of sexual assault. In Texas, children kept in foster care and state-run juvenile lockups often report sexual assault, as well, without the governor's immediate intervention. Last fall, juvenile justice advocates pleaded for the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate sexual abuse in Texas' youth lockups, which have been plagued by scandal for more than a decade.
Abbott and many other Texas Republicans have repeatedly criticized the Biden administration as it struggles to address an increase in migrants being apprehended near the U.S.-Mexico border. Almost all single adults are being immediately expelled under a pandemic health order issued by Trump that Biden has kept in place, although the current administration is allowing in unaccompanied minors and some families to await their immigration court hearings in the U.S. But Democrats are also loudly questioning where the conservative compassion was less than two years ago under President Trump’s watch, when apprehensions hit near-record figures despite his crackdown on the border.
The number of people crossing the border illegally increases nearly every spring thanks to the weather getting warmer. The past three presidents have struggled at times during their tenures with surges in border crossings. But the number of children being apprehended has been particularly high in recent months, straining federal facilities.
As of Tuesday, the Biden administration had more than 4,200 unaccompanied migrant children in Border Patrol custody and roughly 16,000 in the care of federal shelters run by the federal Department of Health and Human Services. By law, unaccompanied children are not supposed to be held in Border Patrol custody for more than 72 hours except for in emergencies. Since Feb. 22, the White House has opened at least eight emergency influx sites of unaccompanied migrant children in Texas, including Freeman, with a total capacity of about 14,000 beds.
Lomi Kriel, Shawn Mulcahy and Patrick Svitek contributed to this report.

Two Different Videos. One Told Only Part Of A Story. The Other Told The Whole Story. Guess Which One The Media Played http://bit.ly/2U0Yk9Y
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington apologized after videos emerged showing students from an all-male Catholic high school mocking Native Americans outside the Lincoln Memorial. STORY: https://t.co/9Va3ubd4m9 pic.twitter.com/QuYEQ5RLbz
— KSAT 12 (@ksatnews) January 19, 2019
NEO: Reporting on each other: the Covington boys, the Native American, and the smart phone vs. the telescreen The news story of the Catholic high school students in MAGA hats who were captured on video supposedly harassing a Native American Vietnam vet was a tale I ignored till now. As presented, it seemed relatively trivial to me—a group of teens acting like jerks. What’s more, I tend to follow the 48-hour rule on stories like that, because so many turn out to be fake or exaggerated. Since then, it’s come out that the story was an excellent example of Fake News Tweaked to Advance the Narrative. I’m not going to go into all the Byzantine details, but you can read them (and watch videos) here, here, here, here, here, and at plenty of other sites. There are sites and people who ran the original story and have since issued corrections or retractions, but so far those sites do not include the WaPo, which has made a big big deal of the story. Even as I write these words the comments there are overwhelmingly in condemnation of the teens based on the original propaganda story, despite a few attempts in the comments by others to give the context and links to the corrective videos (those people are being called paid trolls or alt-right members). Read more .... WNU Editor: When one looks at the above longer video, a different picture emerges. These teenagers kept themselves, did not swear or insult those who were insulting them, kept their composure, and were models on what we want to see in our young. It was the Native American and long time protester Nathan Phillips who confronted these kids (who were keeping to themselves), instead of confronting the Black Israelites a few feet away who were using some of the most vile-racist language that you can hear. It was the teenager who faced him who was the model of restraint and who helped to keep the situation passive, and not Nathan Phillips. But the media coverage choose to show what they want to see, and not what really happened. But the truth finally catches up to you, and we are seeing it now .... Journalists and Celebs Rush to Delete Tweets Slamming MAGA-Hat Kids (Mediaite). More here .... Apologies Roll In For Catholic School Protesters As Fuller Picture Of Events Emerges (Daily Caller). Update: CNN is rushing to defend Natham Phillips .... Native American elder Nathan Phillips, in his own words (CNN).
