So as usual I was thinking about books and it made me think about the Enemies to Lovers trope. This trope is in rage nowadays, from what I have seen by being a part of the book community. There are so many couples that are loved and adored by readers. We have Jude and Cardan from the Folk of the Air, Nina and Matthias from Six of Crows, Aaron and Catalina from the Spanish Love Deception, Alex and Henry from Red, White and Royal Blue, Lou and Reid from Serpent and Dove and everyone’s favourite Ms. Bennet and Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. Now in case I haven’t mentioned any of your favourite couples then please don’t mind, it may be because I forgot or haven’t read the book. Well moving on my question is why do enemies to lovers attract so much attention from readers??

If you see the basic steps to building a book with this trope is two characters hating each other to them forced to work together or them finding a common ground, realising the other may not be so bad, then finally realising their feelings for each other. And bam there you have the perfect recipe for a bestseller. But what makes this recipe delicious depends totally on the author, the way the characters are built, the additional drama, complexities and intricacies added to the basic recipe and also if they have stretched the outline further by adding some more parts to it like betrayal, forbidden romance etc.

I can break down two reasons why audiences like this trope. First one is the ANGST. The amount of angst that contains in the Enemies to Lovers trope is immeasurable as compared to any other tropes. There is just so much drama for the authors to write, it’s a roller coaster ride. It also keeps the readers in edge of their seat which obviously we all love and hence it makes readers go for these kinds of books more. The second reason can be related to the post I once read. It said that the audience loves the idea of someone falling in love with them despite having seen the worst sides of them and having the worst impression, they associate themselves to it more. I think this has to be one of the biggest reasons why people dig this trope so much.

But don’t you think that this is now getting overused a bit? (To anyone who gets offended by this question please don’t come at me, it’s just a personal opinion.) I would love to see more of friends to lovers theme explored in books. It’s just so sweet to see two friends who have known each other and understand each other so well exploring different sides of a relationship. Also, one can write much angst here because having feelings for a friend is just a risky job. I think they also have the capacity to be much more compatible and I can see them going in for the long run. So a request to authors to explore this trope more.
