Earlier this spring I filmed this short film with my good friend Cliff Kapono in Santa Cruz, CA.
Vissla's Cliff Kapono met up with fellow Creator & Innovator, Travis Reynolds, at the world famous Haut Shop board building space in Santa Cruz, CA earlier this spring. What started as a brief chat about surfboard design, quickly resulted in the creation of a traditional, wooden alaia shaped out of paulownia wood and coated with linseed oil. From start to finish the process took about four hours, which gave Cliff the opportunity to test ride the alaia by lunchtime.

ADAPT? - The beaches are closed. The beaches are open. A vocal scientist says she "wouldn’t go in the water for a million dollars.” The confusion leaves passionate surfers to confront an ocean of COVID-19 fear and answer the question — to surf, to not surf, or to simply ADAPT? In this haunting short by Kyle Buthman, we get a glimpse of the answer.
