Raise your hand if you were working for the Royal family, and one day, the king and queen disappear without a trace, leaving behind their recently adopted infant children. Figuring that the police would find them eventually, you decide to stay and look after the kids. However after almost a year, and the royal couple presumed dead and you are given the option to resign. However, you don't think it's right to just toss the two back in the orphanage, and you've grown quite fond of them, AND you don't have anything else going on atm so you decide to continue taking care of them until you can find a more permanent solution. However as the years go by, you begin to fill with anxiety. These two kids grow up to be incredibly talented for their age, and while you are proud of them, it can make them a lot to deal with, making you question your adequacy as a father figure. On top of that, you were only meant to be a temporary caretaker, so there's a chance you could be replaced one day. These insecurities make it hard to commit to the parental role that you clearly play in these kids lives, so while they see you as their dad, you see yourself as nothing more than their butler, and you often have nightmares where these insecurities are on full display.
