Exceptional interwar French reel set in the port of Le Havre, where various characters with skeletons in their closets, chips on their shoulders, half-buried grudges and deferred dreams rendezvous in an ultra-atmospheric genre-blend that is as asymptotic to art as you can find in cinema. Stray-dog Gabin, tortured rat-bastard Simon, and camera-loves-her Michele Morgan anchor the narrative. There are subplots, sure, but it's the playing-out of the main story in a location that rivals Casablanca for intrigue and promise that stays with you.

Propaganda
Michèle Morgan (Le Quai des Brumes)—Michèle Morgan never broke into Hollywood, but she had an intensity and subtlety (and sexiness!) that she brought to a decades-long career in French films. I think she is never less than mesmerizing. She did fascinating work in film noir, but I've mentioned two of her early films here. In Joan of Paris, she's adorable opposite Paul Henreid; in Quai des Brumes (Port of Shadows) she's heartbreaking opposite Jean Gabin. I think she's also magnificent as Marguerite in the '54 Faust retelling. She has a frank sensuality and a beautiful range of expression that I think need more appreciation.
Jean Hagen (The Asphalt Jungle, Singin' in the Rain)—a shimmering star in the cinema firmament! Absolutely iconic as the villainess Lina in singin’ in the rain and makes the picture, to be honest. Nobody played funny-evil-gorgeous the way she does. and that voice!
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut]
Michèle Morgan:
Here's the iconic "T'as d'beaux yeux, tu sais" scene ("You got pretty eyes, y'know?" "Kiss me." "Nelly..." Kiss me again." She goes from 'Vous' to 'Tu'. AAAAA)
youtube
Need more? A career on both sides of the Atlantic; mesmerizing eyes, classy AF, AND she was a painter as well :D She also died at 24 despite living 96 years, due to being born on February 29 !
Tumblr media
Jean Hagen:
Tumblr media
Riddle and you shall receive! How could we forget about Jean Hagen! I love a woman who can play really delightfully evil, and it's very fun seeing her other roles after you've seen her as Lina Lamont. Also, she's got an adorable smile and a gorgeous chin.
Her Oscar-nominated performance as Lina Lamont is a wonderful example of being talented enough to make an unsympathetic character difficult to hate. Admittedly her looks also help a lot - in so many films she would have been the romantic lead and it's a shame Lina didn't get a redemption arc.
Tumblr media
Had a sexy sexy alto register so when she was being dubbed as Lina Lamont by Debbie Reynolds she was dubbing Debbie Reynolds dubbing her. Shoutout to Betty Noyes also.
Linked gifset
did. is anyone. can we please bring attention to her in drag. please god and thank you

RE: scenes/movies that impacted you
I agree with all of your movies, Zal. Most of yours would be mine, as well so if any anons have a beef with your choices, I got your back. For me, I’d also add Sabotage (Hitchcock/Sylvia Sidney & Oskar Homolka) and What Dreams May Come (Robin Williams & Annabella Sciorra) and Doctor Zhivago (Omar Sharif & Julie Christie).
Anyhoo, my question is this—in light of His Girl Friday, what other movie classics (I’ll say up until 1975) would you add to that list?
And yes, I’m interested if you’d do a post for TV shows as well.
:) I actually keep wondering if there's a Hitchock film that I like and I always end up not being able to think of any. I just think it's because North by Northwest was my first introduction to him and I had a BAD reaction to it, haha.

le quai des brumes: sigh. maybe i just need to accept that im too much of a pleb for old old cinema. when the focal point of a #deep_and_dark movie is some romance im just gonna turn off. hurrrrr men and women are from different worlds entirely durrr. the main characters thoughts didnt really awaken anything in me. sad for him i guess? and yeah i get hes like a saviour with a strong moral compass but idk he was just kinda boring 🤷‍♀️ i feel terribly sorry for nelly because no man treated her right. she needed a parental figure not a lover though sjdndj and definitely not a considerably older soldier lover like come on how am i to root for them and romanticise their relationship or whatever. i guess i just didnt feel the solemn vibe of it all. what i liked most were the characters in that one bar dhjfbdh they were fun and vibrant and had great chemistry. but that was the more lighthearted part so idk am i just dumb. also when the bars owner stood in front of his place it had a very. unreal aura. dreamlike even. idk if its because my copy was of such poor quality but it just had such a strange glow to it. music in the port scene was nice. aside from that eh. idk. theyre calling it the best movie of french poetic realism so maybe i just dont feel its general aura. or something

Jean Gabin as Francois and Arletty as Clara in Le Jour se Leve (1939), This is his second honorable mention, after Quai des Brumes (1938), both directed by Marcel Carne.
Arletty had 62 acting credits from 1930 to a 1968 short. Her other notable credits include Children of Paradise, and The Longest Day (1962), one of her few English language films.
