THE STORY OF MILEX
April 22, 2007
Leadmill, Sheffield (day two).
In an article from the online music magazine PennyBlackMusic, we found confirmation that Little Flames performed at this concert with Monkeys:

Andy is watching the concert backstage. Something in the interview about two years of lack of communication does not correspond to reality…
The encore is "505" again: "As a traditional set-closer 'A Certain Romance' builds up to a crescendo I glance over to the sound desk and who should be standing there but former Monkey's bassist Andy Nicholson. He surveys the scene of euphoria in front of him and for a moment his eyes glaze over, only for a wry smile to form across his lips as a sense of pride of his former involvement wells up. There's even time for an encore as the band return to play album closer '505' with Alex sat astride an electric piano: the perfect way to finish a special night that few will forget in a hurry".

theleadmill We cracked open the Leadmill Archive and picked out these incredible photographs of the legendary Arctic Monkeys, from when they played our main stage back in the early 2000s! ✨

His childlike joy is so infectious 🫶🏽
Also his cute little high kicks ( I always have to think of the Can-Can dance)
Adorable pics of Miles with fans, also how he never takes anything for granted when we chant his words back to him

Quote
Damon Quotes: "We were never a Britpop band, britpop is stuff like the Bluetones" "We've made about a million now, split it equally 4 ways but it's not about the money" "Well everybody's different" (in a defensive tone; on Graham being described as a bit "strange" and "shy") "Yeah, Write Songs" (When asked for any tips on songwriting by a budding young songwriter) "Feels fucking great, even though I've cut my elbow" (when asked how he felt at the end of "the universal" live where he falls back on the stage with his arms outstretched and the crowd go ballistic ) All "quotes" are from the aftershow @ the leadmill in 1995. I got to chat with them and Damon was just brilliant, very open and talkative. Damn, I just remembered another funny thing (As I said it was a long time ago and my written account of it is awol at the moment).. "Yeah I shagged both of them (laughs)" (When asked if he did anything with those two star-struck girls in the Star shaped video that come back to the tour bus). From the way he said it and the laugh he was Joking ( I think, I'm sure he would prefer a nice cuppa )

THE STORY OF MILEX
April 21, 2007.
The first of two joint gigs of Monkeys and The Little Flames in Sheffield, the home club Leadmill.
Where Miles will spend the night?
At Alex's house, ofc, because the songs for future Puppets' album will not write themselves😊
It is necessary to build a spiritualistic circle with guitars, to cuddle up to each other with your knees, well, because magic is built on this, you know;) Any free time for writing Puppets songs😉 Yeahh…
We have one tiny but priceless photo.
Tumblr media
NME written two articles about the gig. One with the announcement of the next gig and the release of the second album. Noted that Turner was taciturn (well, as always):
«Arctic Monkeys played an intimate homecoming show to a joyous crowd at the Sheffield Leadmill last night (April 21, 2007). Alex Turner remained next to silent in between songs, speaking only to thank the crowd towards the end of the gig, earned him enourmous cheers.
The second article is the author's material, there are more beautiful epithets to describe all this splendor. Very sweet, but the description of "505" will add: "Best though is their encore, the glorious future Glasto-slayer '505'. "In my imagination you're lying waiting on your side/With your hands between your thighs", sighs Alex with the grace and composure of a less misanthropic Morrissey".
What was on this song between our guys, we can guess, because we only have 30 seconds from the video (Oasismad). And that's the end of the song.

Some of you might know that I’m a massive Elliott Smith fan, the subtitle of this blog ‘Needle in the Hay’ being a massive give away.
Sadly, he’d passed away by the time I discovered his music, but his words played a massive part in my musical upbringing and helped get me through some dark times.
Over the years Tumblr has allowed to interact and chat with many fans of his from around the world. One incredibly kind person even went and signed the famous Figure 8 (album cover) wall in California on my behalf!  That meant more than words could ever describe, especially with me being 8 thousand miles away.  The kindness of strangers, never fails to amaze me.
I was thinking about Elliott today, and I decided to do some internet digging to see if he ever played my city.  Something that never really occurred to me before. It not only turns out that he did, but there’s a recording of the ENTIRE show available online.
Elliott played Sheffield, England on 5th December 1998 (I was 12) at the infamous venue, The Leadmill.  A venue I’ve frequented many a time since, without ever knowing that Elliott once graced that very stage.  My first ever show took place there, and many a Friday night drinking session took part in that very building.
So I’m sat here, listening to that very recording.  Imagining myself inside those walls, amongst these people, in my very own city listening to one of my favourite singers of all time.
Unfortunately, time travel isn’t possible but this is as close as you get.
RIP Elliott Smith.
