carmen carrera is over the bullshit.

between the unsavory characters on the streets and the scumbags who've crossed paths with her over the years, she's over the whole concept of love

so when unit bravo strolls into her office, looking fresh out of a magazine and pure trouble she's unimpressed to say the least

especially when a, oh sorry, commanding agent du mortain comes in to mansplain her own case to her

(a generally does very little for her patience)

so when kind-hearted, flirty agent sewell comes in and smooths things over, her first instinct is to be grateful

(and maybe even a little impressed by how easily he moves the unit?)

and that gratitude slowly lends itself to something of a friendship

except friends don't let their gazes linger

and friends don't get butterflies in their stomach when they talk to each other

but carmen is too damn old to let some feelings get in the way of what she needs to do, which is catch the killer

n doesn't make themselves easy to ignore

(not that she's trying all that hard, anyway)

and once shit hits the fan and she learns the truth about n, particularly the fact that they're a bloodsucking fiend, it becomes easy to justify her distance

(but it feels so awful, and she wants nothing more than to be close to them)

once she's returned to her work as a detective, she falls back into their familiar rhythm

and when n sidles up to her, she welcomes the touch

and honestly? it feels good to be wanted, especially by someone as amazing gifted and understanding kind as n

the moment she knows, however, is their short moment in the hospital after her escape

she can barely see, let alone walk, but she still finds it within her to keep going

(for n. she goes on for n.)

when she finds herself in their arms, the relief and warmth that fills her can't denied

in the end, she decides that the romance thing isn't so bad after all

and maybe, just maybe, carmen could try again.

Hello, I just wanted to let all the Detectives know that their outfits are absolutely fire 🔥 !

I love how each one fits their personalities so so much (Low Key though Mori's is just adorbs with that ribbon and Marionette just feels all warm like a warm apple cider on a cold winter night)

Literally the mantra I got going for me when it comes to outfits is from that meme "you cant fight crime if you aint cute!" Hfufjf

DEMO SPOILERS i’ve had this sitting in drafts since wednesday

I’ve been having a lot of feelings about M as bff in general but specifically for an N romance (when am I not)

And a lot of those feelings come from the contrast of N being overprotective (which we're starting to see!) and M standing up for the detective as someone who is capable and part of the team (as we’ve already seen in Book 2)

And then this demo went and hit me right in those feelings with this exchange:

have you played every LI route in twc? if yes how would you rank them?

Yes! But ranking them?? Aw man here we go :/

1. LT

I played this route first, and the emotional rollercoaster alone makes it top tier for me. But it's all the little things too... like the longing looks? The juxtaposition between how A and N show or don't show affection? A sacrificing themself for N's happiness? N's initial cluelessness and then slow realization that something is going on? Amazing. And with the bold/shy flirt options for both, the various options for when you have to choose between them, and the detective's customizable personality, it feels like there's endless ways to play this one route.

I've never seen a love triangle in a supernatural story where the two "competitors" aren't sworn enemies. A and N's friendship dynamic makes it all the more j u i c y and I'm dying to see how that whole mess turns out.

2. N

My detective is Agent Sewell's right hand arm man. She is Agent Sewell everything. She's their confidante, their best friend, their silly rabbit. Seriously, their route is such a feel-good experience. I love how quickly they can go from sweet to spicy then back again, and how they're so assured and open with their feelings for the detective. At the same time there are still things they're hiding from them, which is unexpected and adds another layer of complexity to their character.

(And Nat in particular is just 🥺🥵🥰)

3. M

Dumbass (affectionate). Absolute hornball. Pairing them with a detective that's the exact same way, or complete opposite, is super fun to read. I really like their gradual development from rude and uncaring to soft and loyal, and how they don't even know what it is they're feeling yet, but don't attempt to deny it or push it down (except for that bakery scene in the last demo but nvm).

10/10 can't wait to see their aha moment.

4. A

A is legit the endgame in my main playthrough but their individual route is so frustrating lol. Playing the LT first kinda skewed things for me because I placed most of the reasons for them holding back their feelings on their friendship with N, but I understand now that they have a lot of other baggage that has nothing to do with N. In most slow burn romances I've read, the other character's hangups are known upfront or revealed early on, which makes the wait more tolerable, so not having the details yet is hard.

Their route is like the written form of the "trust nobody, not even yourself" meme and I'm looking forward to when they finally put the gun down 😔

5. F

Listen, friends-to-lovers is an awesome trope and I'm usually here for it. I think all the angsty-angst from the other routes spoiled me for this one though. I was missing a lot of the drama in their route, but I also get that it doesn't need it. Characters can like each other without there being some major obstacle in the way, and I think that's what makes this route special, as well as necessary since the other routes already provide plenty of drama for those who want it. That being said, some parts of F's route didn't hit with me, and I definitely need to replay a few more times to narrow it all down.

I do like that even though F is the most overt with their feelings, you still get to see them be nervous around the detective. The fact that all they wanted was to be chosen, and for the detective to be happy had me saying "awww!!" out loud, multiple times. Overall, I just really appreciate F as a character and the levity they bring to the unit. I hope they and the detective get to stay happy and nothing bad ever happens to them again, because it's truly what they deserve.

2) What was the hardest part of forming the relationship?

Convince Murphy to give it a try. He was unwilling to commit due to his past and his traumas. All of the shit he went through was also pretty recent when we met and I wanted to commit to him, which didn¨t help his case at all.

He couldn't see how he could move on, the means, concrete means to do so. After Silent Hill, he had hope, his view more optimistic of his own life and outlook on life, despite not all the rain being gone. He still misses Charlie terribly, of course, the wound is not going to heal completely, but he can learn to live again and live with it, cherish the memories.

At least losing Carol doesn't hurt anymore, she hurt him severely when she got up and left after what happened to Charlie. I might've said some harsh words about her when I found out about a letter she had send to Murphy in prison. She was blaming him for their loss. Which to me is utterly baffling, but I guess she was looking someone to blame. Wrong target so I dislike her. The letter might've been the last piece that pushed Murphy to take such drastic measures he did.

To say he has baggage is understatement. It certainly makes relationship with him a challenge, but I mean it in affectionate way.

4) How easy was it for them to admit that they love you?

To say it wasn't easy would be right but too light in expression. Murphy is by nature, closed off and distant. To have him admit fondness is uphill battle, one that he was steadily losing despite his best efforts.

He struggled with it a long time, wanting not to be chained to anyone or anything anymore, but eventually he realized how screwed this line of thinking was of him. He was telling himself lies in order for him to be easier to slip away someday.

He couldn't go through with it, once he tried to pull it off. He was almost through the door of his apartment, never to return, but couldn't. His feelings ran too deep. Instead he came over and once I asked him about the duffel bag he was carrying that had his belongings, he lied and asked to live with me. It wasn't until a while later he admitted the lie.

For Murphy to say out loud he loved me, took him long time. I didn't expect it of him, despite our living arrangement and his fond looks when he thought I wouldn't notice.

He admitted it one night, quiet and scared, having thought about it from every angle for a long while.

6) If they’re usually stoic, are they soft around you?

Murphy tries to be stoic and from certain view, he is. He isn't shocked by things I would be, having lived through such disturbing events through his life.

He does react to things that do shock him openly and cusses freely.

Around everyone else, he's closed off, distant. You don't know that well what goes in his head.

But around me, that changes. He becomes soft and loving, tender.

10) Have they changed for the better since they met you? Have you changed for the worst since you met them?

He has. I've helped him, or so he claims, with his grief, giving him something to look forward to in the morning. His sleeping habits are all over the place still, but I'd argue he's better. Healing isn't linear and happens to wobble all over the place after all.

He would've stayed on the run forever, if not for me. The only reason he could go back to Ryall and sit the remained time he had before wounding up in the silent town is me. We wrote every day, he expressed many times I keep him sane.

Murphy has the misfortune of having the most fucked up combo of traumas; being orphan and raised in monastery, losing loved ones, prison trauma, killed a man, got blackmailed, survived town full of monsters and reminder of all his trauma and got trauma from that too!

He was nearly done with his time when Sewell's (his blackmailer) murder was uncovered and with it his role in Coleridge's attempted one. In the end he was deemed to have been blackmailed and forced to be accomplice, not carried this deed. Having Anne-Marie backing him up helped.

After the trial, he could come back no strings attached. He gets to live free and happy life with me, which is miles better than he had in store before he met me. Murphy goes to meet other Silent Hill survivors to unofficial group meetings when he feels like it and has taken quite liking to Harry and Alex and he finds Heather funny.

His life has changed for the better, but I'm not here to fix him, his attitude has changed but not much else.

He told me about the incident he did in prison, the murder that is. The motives, the way he did it, because I asked and he was in mood to tell me. I understand his reasons too much to judge him. Love him, too much to judge him.

17) Was your f/o afraid of commitment?

The last time he committed, life decided to fuck him over. It would be miracle if he wasn't.

But even if he hadn't gone through, everything I've listed, he would still be afraid of commitment, I'm confident to say he was afraid before he married his ex-wife!

So I'm safe to say he was afraid to commit to me, especially with everything.

What are the love languages of the UBs?

Sera actually answered this back in the day, but didn’t expand on it so I will lol.

A’s is ‘Acts of Service’ which actually makes a lot of sense considering how much they struggle with being open and vulnerable with their feelings. They prefer a much more subtle approach, one they can easily write off as just doing their job if they get called out on it. Examples of A’s love language include the multiple times they’ve gone out of their way to walk/drive the detective home (I know every LI does this, but it hits particularly hard with A when you consider this is their way of expressing care) as well as several instances detailed in some of Sera’s old scenario asks, my favorite being this sweet fic about A volunteering to help the detective make cupcakes. There’s also a really great fic on Patreon about A spending the morning clearing snow off the detective’s car and clearing an entire pathway for them to leave and ahhhhh it just gets me every time.

N’s is ‘Quality Time’ because of course it is. Spending time with the people they care about means everything to them. Maybe that’s why there’s so much emphasis put on how dang hard it is to get a moment alone with them in their route and why, when they finally manage to squeeze in some alone time, N always seems really happy. A great example of N’s love language is their line during the research scene when the detective comments on how at ease they seem and they respond with (and I’m paraphrasing here), “How could I not be? You with me in my favorite place? I wouldn’t mind seeing you in here a lot more often.” Just think of how happy N must have been in that moment. Honestly, if they hadn’t left to stop themselves from getting too horny they probably would’ve sat in there with the detective all day. And there have also been several asks that emphasize N’s distaste for distractions like phone calls when they and the detective are doing things together and oftentimes they will tell the detective that they don’t want them to focus on anything else while they're together. Seriously, why would you ever focus on anything else when N freakin’ Sewell is in front of you? What could possibly be more interesting? Look, bottom line is we’ve seen how difficult it is for N to get a moment alone with life and their teammates always getting in the way. If the stars are finally going to align and give N a few precious moments with the detective, then they want to make sure they’ve got the detective’s undivided attention because they never know how long it’ll be until the next moment alone. So you better believe they’re going to make every second count. 

F’s is ‘Words of Affirmation’ and it makes a lot of sense given how openly F likes to express their thoughts and feelings regarding, well, just about everything lol. I mean, just think of all the times in the books so far that F’s called the detective attractive or smart or amazing. They’re not doing it just to be a flirt either. F is a very blunt person who tells it like it is, so if they tell the detective they’re amazing it’s because F truly believes with every fiber of their being that the detective is amazing. And they want the detective to know it too. F’s love language is particularly interesting to me because, out of all the members of UB, F is the one who is most in need of a partner whose love language at least somewhat aligns with theirs. I don’t think F’s partner’s primary love language has to be words of affirmation, but I do think they need someone who is willing to toss them some of those praises every once in a while, if only to reassure them that the love they're pouring out is wholeheartedly reciprocated and not just one-sided like some of their previous relationships. And honestly, what would be better than getting into a compliment battle with F? Nothing, that’s what. 

M’s is ‘Physical Touch’ and sure yeah that does include those kind of touches, so it’s not really that big of a surprise. But it’s the softer touches that really get me. There were surprisingly quite a few examples of the gentler side of M’s love language in their book 3 demo, including running the back of their hand along the detective’s cheek in silent comfort in the forest scene, holding the detective’s hand if they were particularly afraid of the bounty, and the soft neck kiss they gave the detective before leaving them at their door in the warehouse. These gentler touches are going to become more and more commonplace as M’s route progresses and will eventually become M’s preferred way of expressing their love for the detective as opposed to outright saying it. Which I just really really love for them. There’s so many unspoken things in M’s route, so many subtleties that seem unimportant, but actually hold a lot of depth and meaning when you examine them closer. And so the idea of M’s fingers brushing the detective’s when they sit near each other or M absentmindedly leaning closer to the detective when they have a conversation, especially if M’s not aware they’re doing it, is just so delicious dude like I don't know what to tell you.

so sorry if this is super random but i haven't played his route (cause he's not really my type) and i know your oc romances him so i was wondering what's nate's deal? like what's his tragic backstory? i've tried to google it but the twc wiki doesn't say 😔

we arent 100% sure actually! N still hasnt told us the whole story.

in book 3, when the detective can research their LI, they find a newspaper article from like 1720? 1721? i think? it has been a hot minute since I've read it. about a ship called the queen's sabre that was found with everyone aboard dead, and apparently very gruesome. the sewell family is like "HEY WHERES OUR KID???" bc N wasnt among the corpses. in book 2, during N's mirror scene, we see them in the midst of a very bloody fight on board a ship, and they seem very strange and out of it. mishka said N was a vampire during their mirror scene, iirc. N is also now afraid of ships and sea travel also. oh and nate specifically was in the royal navy. nat had family members who were.

so N was turned at sea while on this ship. we arent sure what their X tier ability is, but it probably has something to do with what was happening on the ship -- everyone killing each other. they were almost certainly turned against their will. their X tier ability is probably also triggered by blood, because they receive less than everyone else.

so yeah! local sweetheart turned into a vampire against their will and either witnesses or causes (!) a massacre of their shipmates. wishes they could be human again. misses family. my beloved :)

okay, i know it's been a while but i really was struggling with finding/thinking of a prompt (and my finals but that is secondary).

i was randomly reminded of this N Sewell HC that i had posted a few weeks back, and that – along with a few very up-in-the-air ideas in my head – formed the idea of this HC.

i really hope you like it!

ROs and Rings

N wears two rings, one of which - at some point - they give the detective, as something to hold onto. but y’know what makes that so meaningful? the rings hold a very deep meaning to N. maybe they were N’s parents’ wedding bands? N is a sentimental person who seems to still yearn for humanness and also had a seemingly good relationship with their parents. so wearing their parents’ rings is their way of not just honouring their parents’ memory, but also a way of holding onto their human life. giving the detective one of the rings, then, is not them merely giving the detective an article that belongs to them, oh no no no. it’s N sharing their life with them. it’s N being willing to part with a powerful connection to their past because they now see themself have a future.

F has their fair share of rings: some of them alluding to some memories they hold very dear. still - regardless of the memories they’re attached with - none of the rings seem to hold a candle to a ring they hold onto so much more dearly. they were walking around the town with the detective on their day off when the detective let out a chuckle. they mention how they loved those candies as they looked at a child sucking on what seemed like a ring? oh man, is that allowed? a few days later, they present the detective - with great flourish - enough candy rings to last a fortnight. “i wasn’t sure which one you liked, so i brought you as many flavours i could get my hands on!” they said. they didn’t miss the way the detective’s eyes lit up - only brighter this time - as they excitedly opened one, and offered F another. well, they finished the candy a while back but what stays with F is the brightness that the detective’s excited laughter brought to their heart. the plastic ring rests atop a small table, by their bed - the safest, yet closest - they can keep it. after all, it commemorates the moment they realised with a sudden clarity that they loved the detective like they had loved no one else and that they never want to let them go.

A doesn’t care for accessories; they hardly ever did. they like things that are functional and they find it kinda pointless to accessorise themself if the accessories in question don’t have a functional value. yet, wrapped in a worn-out piece of cloth, deep inside their cupboard lies a ring: a simple band studded with a single emerald stone. they remember having bought it not long before they were turned. they don’t know (or remember) why they bought it, or why they continued to keep it after they were turned. nevertheless, the ring lay there in their cupboard nearly forgotten. well, until they walked into the Wayhaven police station and were left completely...intrigued by the detective. it's been a while since then and they often find themself taking the ring out and turning it over the fingers wondering just how it could feel so right for them to give it to the detective. it felt as though the ring had claimed its wearer centuries before A even met them. maybe someday they could give it to the detective. soon.

M had never thought they’d ever get here. they don’t know what got into them but now they were here, buying for the detective probably the most meaningful gift - something that you wouldn’t expect from them. hell, they hadn’t expected that either. but they were here. on a lazy afternoon, they would slide it across to the detective nonchalantly. “a promise ring,” they would say, maintaining the same nonchalance - well, trying to. M had really never thought they’d ever get here: being so loved by - and so in love with - someone that their heart only just barely contains the sheer joy that comes from it. but they were here. and they were simply...happy.

This past summer, I was part of the big boom of the TWC fandom post book two and saw the fandom grow before my very eyes. It was fun and it was exciting!

And with all rapidly expanding and larger fandoms, with the vey good comes the negative (speaking negatively about LIs etc ... it’s a small fandom with eight fantastic LIs, let’s not, maybe? AND not adhering to the color palettes and not seeing the issue with why it’s important to follow the color palettes/respecting the background of the characters - I will not get into it but it really ... hurt to see some of the reactions that I saw in response. It still hurts thinking about it). 

For the most part, there have been some very important voices who have spoken up and I’ve been seeing an improvement. That is great!

Taking a break, for me, was in part due to insecurities. Letting the types of posts I made affect me and make me anxious. That they weren’t up to par, weren’t of the right quality. Weren’t interesting enough. Just a lot of things that made me feel panicked after posting them. 

So! For what you said. 

How you enjoy Wayhaven is completely correct and completely valid. If you enjoy it? You enjoy it. If you love the characters, you love the characters. This is what I always have to keep in mind. Even the author’s interpretation of her own characters is a bit inconsistent between all the content that’s created and questions answered. They’re all a work in progress as she’s working through her story and are subject to change (plus! she’s admitted that her characters fit into archetypes though they are quite nuanced in the books). 

It is all speculation. I think the speculation is part of the fun. There is no one person in the fandom that knows these characters the best. It’s a collective! I just happen to think about Nat/e far too often and I just spill out my thoughts based on what I’ve read in the stories and spending way, way too much time on their personality/characteristics (which changes!! like, okay, N kisses the detective on the neck in book 2 but book 3 ...?? what!) and analyzing scenes (like, in the book 2 research scene ... did you catch that N deflects the detective’s questions? they do!) 

And! Your fandom experience is your own. That is really hard to remember. Especially when you do want to support your friends and you do want to support new people. (you’ll be amazed at my tabs open to read fanfics!) It’s a very lovely and sweet endeavor but it’s a large undertaking. If you can support everyone? That’s wonderful.

But sometime we just do not have the spoons. And that is very okay, too. Very, very okay.

If you’ve gotten this far, I appreciate it and appreciate you. I have more to say about my feelings but I’m going to keep those private. Thank you, though, for making me feel heard and seen and understood. That I’m not alone. You are wonderful and I really, really hope you can get back to where you enjoyed this book. Because it is wonderful. The characters are phenomenal (N Sewell is one of my favorite literary characters). There is a reason that it’s so popular on tumblr (in the top 50 ‘video games’ of 2020. the only IF that made it on the list) and Patreon (over 1600 patreons).

I Didn’t Want This

Story: Tinies with tails, and Jewel only now realised that when she’s shrunk, she too gets a new…limb? Although it seems to be conspiring against her more than a regular arm or leg.

So basically Blame told me to do tails on a call we had and I couldn’t resist, because Tinies with Tails (even if they aren’t Borrowers) need to be appreciated. Part of the reason why our resident walnut-hat and her family has a tail now.

The art’s part of a new dump of Sewel content that I may upload with stories or dark outlines like the ‘smorch’ one in the last dump. And basically I love it and I love tails and Jewel and Seto and yes.

I hope you can too!

“Finally back from your expedition?”

Jewel nearly growls up at the smug expression the size of a billboard sitting before her, raising a finger to point when the sharp tail decides to get caught under her angry step and send her slipping backward.  

“AH!”

She doesn’t fall anywhere dangerous, simply bouncing a little on the surface of their mattress as Seto’s expression doesn’t change. At first he’d been concerned, but now he only offers a raised eyebrow as he looms overhead, indifferent to her looking utterly defeated. Eyes downturned in shame as she lies prone on the warm sheets, dwarfed by the soft surroundings.

Hmm…

“Maybe you should…stay down this time.”  

The tired giant rumbles, looking her up and down before sighing.  

“So we can go back to sleep.”  

Jewel looks up as a hand descends upon her, too late to scramble out from beneath the rapidly approaching shadow. She gets her husband is /tired/, it's early on a weekend and he’d just watched her stumble about for a solid 10 minutes, unable to wrangle the long scaled tail that had appeared to do nothing but trip her and mess up her balance. But…maybe be a bit let harsh to the Anhemite who cannot even walk.  

“Wait-!”

All of a sudden, Jewel finds herself swinging… instead of nabbed and held to a chest by her tired mate. More importantly, she’s swinging upside down with her hair grazing the ground as she stabilises, blinking as she tries to work out the image of Seto’s elbow and chest smothered in sheets.

And yet… her legs are hanging out in front of her too. Not securely wrapped around the giant’s finger like she’d thought happened in some kind of reflex ninja move. Looking up she sees…her tail?

Curled around Seto’s finger leaving her dangling like beneath it.  

“U-Uh, Seto?” Jewel calls up, although she’s pretty sure the giant felt whatever happened as the hovering hand raised up instead of continuing in its path to curl around her. Panic wells inside the Anhemite as a pressure on her lower back suddenly appears, shutting her eyes tight when there’s too much space put between her an the floor.  

“N-No I-“

Seto stares dumbfounded at his wife, dangling perfectly, like a bat, with her thicker tail able to support her weight like a fifth limb and hold her steady albeit upside down. He can feel the smooth scales gripping tight around his middle finger, and that says something when the Anhemite is just taller than the digit.  

“Sugar cube.”

Jewel feels Seto muse, a proud tone to his voice washing over her although right now she couldn’t exactly care. Because this /tail thing/ could drop her /any second/ and she’s too high and dangling without any support and growing faint and-

“Seto!”

Ground.

As soon as her head bumps against something solid the rest of her body races into action, eyes flying open as she scrabbles for purchase on the gently cupped /palm/ while the Japanese giant watches on in concern. The last of the tiredness gone from his eyes as his hand comes to rest beside the smaller being and her tail still tightly coiled around his finger.

“Are you okay?”  

Feels her Cssrail as she takes a moment to simply lie over his hand, before appearing to slump and relax the tense muscles. Seto’s gaze flicking to where her tail finally relinquishes it’s grip and slides away to lie neatly over her legs, still coiled at the tip.  

“I’m okay…”

Jewel almost fell, her head pounds a little and base of her spine hurts, but she’s okay.  Stuck with a tail that tripped and nearly dropped her, but was still strong enough to hold her upside-down. Seeming to obey now as it lies limp, just like her. 

“Fine. Let’s go to sleep.”

“Of course.”

“But you haven’t won.” The Anhemite chuckles, kicking a thumb when a ‘yeah, sure’ is murmured. “Now I have more reason to turn the tail against you.” “And I have more reason to turn this hand against you.”
