#like ugh i get the critiques on the shows and seasons

Okay, finished the whole season. Thoughts on the new ATLA under the cut. (They're positive, so if that's not your jam that's fine. But I'd like to keep this post positive. Discussion is welcome, bashing is not.)
I fucking loved it. This is easily the best adaption of something I have ever seen. They got the tone so well, and the way they mixed in 1 to 1 stuff from the original show with their new stuff worked so, so well. That addition of the division Zuko saved being assigned as his crew? Chef's kiss. Chef's fucking kiss.
I think the biggest marker of success for me, though, is that I didn't have to do anything else while I was watching and I didn't WANT to. My attention was fully, 100% on the show 95% of the time, which is so, so fucking rare for me as someone with ADHD. I don't even remember the last time I watched a show and didn't have to also be drawing or doing a puzzle or playing a game on my phone to stay engaged. But with this I didn't.
Also, the COLORS. It was such a fucking pretty show. And IT WASN'T FUCKING BLACK. There was LIGHT. I watched 80% of it during the day in my relatively bright livingroom and I could always see everything clearly, even during the night scenes. And the siege of the North with the limited hues and blasts of fire? Perfect.
And Azula! The way they added her to this season was so damn good. Sets up her character so fucking well. Just. Ugh. Yes.
They also aged it up just right. It really feels like a WAR is going on in a way it didn't in the original (which is not a critique of the original at all, just what worked for telling the story that way). But it also doesn't revel in that darkness constantly, which is refreshing.
As for the changes they made to Sokka, I think the warrior narrative works really well, and they rounded it out nicely. I can't wait to see his eventually reunion with his dad now. Would it have been more true to his character to include the sexism as well? Yeah. But I think, with the way they streamlined the narrative overall, having him go on a journey of learning better about his sexism AND struggling with being a warrior would've made things feel bloated. Focusing on just the warrior narrative, to me, just works better with everything else they did in the live action.
Can't wait to see what they do in season 2! (And we better get a season 2. And 3.)
Also.
Queer ladies Oma and Shu FTW.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon | S1E1 Thoughts
Okay I am gonna list all my positive and negative thoughts regarding each episode (I know no one asked but I feel like this is the only thing I am somewhat “qualified” to talk about ad nauseam on here).
⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD ⚠️ do not read below the cut unless you’re okay with spoilers
Positive Thoughts
Norman’s acting is so good like?? Listen we all know he’s not Laurence Olivier and he doesn’t claim to be but goddamnit he nails the subtleties of Daryl’s expressions and conveys his emotions really well I think! I’m very impressed
Daryl hot
Obviously the cinematography, setting, and aesthetics are really cool. It’s both gritty but pretty!! I love the gothic architecture and how OLD everything looks, which is only exacerbated by the apocalyptic feel
Everyone in the cast is so good in terms of acting (well, I mean… Laurent is certainly there but he’s a child so we’ll be lenient)
Daryl hot
The walkers are great as usual. I love the burners. Really interesting! I’m kind of wondering if the “experiments” the people on the ship refer to relate to the burners? Maybe they’re making them like that idk.
I love the religious imagery. We have had cults and stuff in TWDU before but I don’t think we’ve had this Catholic vibe going on. I’m a sucker for anything nun related because I have a weird infatuation with them, so I’m all for it.
DARYL BATHTUB SCENE??? They put that in for the girls and the gays and we are LIVING for it
Daryl hot
Daryl is so reminiscent of early seasons TWD era with his witty lines and snark remarks. I feel like we don’t get to see this side of Daryl very often anymore, but now that he has his own show and is THE main character, we get to see those sides that have been neglected again. I also love how much he sort of scoffs at the nuns and their religion. Atheist Daryl we love to see it
It’s cool seeing people in France dealing with the same things our characters have dealt with since the beginning. It’s interesting to see these new parts of the world in this universe for sure
Daryl hot
I honestly just love thinking about how when Daryl gets home he is gonna have such a crazy ass story to tell everyone! It’s gonna be so cute to see him telling all the kids about how heroic he is and ugh yessss
Daryl deserves his own show. He deserves to be THE main character. People who said he can’t lead a show? Nah. Reconsider
I also love that Daryl MIGHT potentially save the world. Cool asf. And if anyone from the original series should save the world, I think it’s him.
Daryl hot
Negative Thoughts:
Okay. I have some very petty/subjective critiques. I realize a lot of you guys probably disagree with me but that’s okay! Don’t read my negative thoughts if you aren’t prepared to be annoyed with me lol. Once again, a lot of these are super petty/nitpicky
First thing that bothers me is that Daryl says he is from the Commonwealth. No. He is from Alexandria, thank you very much. Well, at least he should be. He should’ve been living at Alexandria imo but the finale didn’t really make it explicitly clear where he was living in that year time jump. Basically I just hate the Commonwealth because I have zero attachment to it and it’s just a stupid ass place that I wanna forget about
Daryl seeing Carol in his haze 🙄 … just annoys me solely because Carol annoys me. They could’ve just shown Judith because that would’ve made more sense to me. But don’t get me started, I don’t even want Carol in season 2. Anyway.
Laurent isn’t terrible but he’s kind of annoying in that “I’m so smart I know everything” way. Just very annoying smart kid at school who everyone hated vibes. Plus I just don’t think it’s realistic that he would be THAT smart just from being raised in a convent of nuns
I also fail to understand what they’re doing with Laurent. Is he just some kid that the nuns think is the messiah or is he ACTUALLY the messiah? Like are they gonna throw in a whole other supernatural religious element? Because Laurent conveniently knows Judith’s line from the finale “you deserve a happy ending too.” Right down to the letter. I find it cheesy as hell because I’m so tired of these blatant in your face parallels that are trying to be clever, which always involve children too like we get it children are basically the duck tape of TWDU. Don’t know what to do for this plot? Throw some kids in there!
Neither Positive nor Negative Thoughts:
I don’t trust the nuns. I think they’re gonna use Daryl to get what they want and they don’t really care about getting him home. Worse, I think it could be possible that Isabelle won’t let him get home. She already tried to keep him from using the radio. I’m not saying I hate her character or anything (I actually like her so far… as long as she stays friendly and not… overly friendly), I just think she’s way too invested in this “messiah” stuff to actually care about Daryl so I fear she will take advantage of him. We shall see.
Ok, those are pretty much all of my thoughts!

"#TheCrown boss on their telling of Prince William meeting Kate Middleton in season 6: "We wanted to depict a great Kate""
UUUUUGH I HAAAAAATED how they portrayed William and Kate. For a show that's portrayed the royals with absolutely wonderful complexity and nuance, Will had no discernible personality beyond mopey and inarticulate and Kate was nothing more than a stereotypical nice middle-class girl next door. Like GOD FORBID she may have actually had ambitions to be royal or used her sexuality to get Will interested in her.
Like we all understand that it's okay for women to be ambitious, right?! Ugh I can't handle the idea that Kate married him purely out of the love in her heart and then he turned around and cheated on her with her best friend.

Time for my second post before the new X-Men 97 episode: opinions on The Plot of the first three episodes!
Overall, I've been having a ton of fun with it. The first episode had a lot of fun parallels to Night of the Sentinels and worked well as a sort of re-introduction to the team. The second episode was intense but juicy. (I do understand the critiques I've seen of Magneto's speech - there are certain parts I think were done well, and I did automatically go 'oh hey they're talking about his Jewish background!' when he started talking so I don't think they...fully...removed it, but other parts of it were confusing and kinda lost the plot and yeah, I agree with what others of have said about the original speech being a lot more direct and powerful) I DO think they are mostly doing Magneto well in that his intensity, his drive to protect mutants, and his relationship with Charles are all still well done and those were all present in the original cartoon as well. Sometimes I almost wanted him to go villain mode more lol just because it's always impressive and sometimes the human characters are KIND OF ASKING FOR IT. I do wonder if he will stay on the hero side from now on or if he'll eventually end up a villain again - I could see it going either way for this show!
For episode 3, it was a RUSH but it was a fun rush! The horror was spooky, the action solid, and there were some really cool emotional beats as well. It...definitely would have worked better as a 2-4 episode story arc, because some of those plot beats would have been SO GOOD with more room to breathe. And it definitely ran into my pet peeve of 'the only explanation to some of this is "uhh well it happened in the comics"' which I never like - why was she called the Goblin Queen in this version? It's a pretty specific title that didn't have anything to do with her powers or motivation or anything. Or was there a reason she chose the name Madelyn Pryor in this version? Who knows. I do think if you HAD to fit a whole arc into one episode, this was the best it could be done, but I still wish they simply had more episodes in the season to tell their story (like, 24 instead of ten). Because yeah, each episode has felt like a one-shot almost, but not in a normal bottle episode way, in a 'each episode is one arc unto itself', with just certain character threads carrying over.
This isn't a huge issue for me since when I first heard there was ten episodes in the season I went 'oh yeah, this is gonna be a huge mess'. xD So my standard is 'if it's a FUN mess I'll be fine with it, since I love these characters and am excited to see more content with them - and maybe if it's big enough future seasons could have more eps'. And it has definitely been a fun mess so far!
ALSO I AM EXCITED TO SEE A STORM ARC. Her losing her powers is UGH, but I know it's gonna be a whole Thing and so it will be cool to see her get more focus. I also really liked seeing her friendship with Jean! There was not enough varied team friendship duos originally for me, and what they got going seems really nice.
AND MISTER SINISTER IS BACK. I do think he's a very intimidating villain, so I am curious to see what they do with him and what kind of character dynamics it brings out in the heroes. :O
All in all, I have my critiques and quibbles, but I am HYPED and still having a good time!

Pizza Tower: The Series Episode Concept
Title: "Le Critique De Merde"
Season: 4
Summary: Pepperman finally opens his own wing in the museum, and among the various celebrities visiting is the shrimp diva Dame Crevette. While initiallly excited to show his art to her, he soon finds she has... conflicting tastes.
Notes: FINALLY CREVETTE IS HERE! AND OOH BOY ARE YOU GONNA HATE HER!
As mentioned in the summary, Pepperman is initially excited that THE Dame Crevette is visiting his wing in the museum! Surely she must have an eye for art like his, how he desires to talk with her for hours about such visions and...
Crevette: Good heavens, I wouldn't hang this up if I was being held at gunpoint!
As Pepperman's pedestal he'd put her on completely shatters, we get a B-plot of The Noise causing havoc in the rest of the museum set to unfitting classical music... before being caught by the guards and having to make a dash out of there.
Going back to Pepperman, he tries to reason with Crevette, maybe she just doesn't see it the same way he does. But the more he tries to explain, the more obviously annoyed she gets before finally telling him to shut up.
Meanwhile, The Noise is in a bit of a pinch. He's desperately hiding and trying to avoid the guards' wrath. He then notices a missing tile in the ceiling that he could use to escape. As he does so, the guards comically miss the obvious running noises coming from above.
Pepperman tries to calm his anger once more. Okay, so maybe she didn't like his paintings. But what about his commercial work seen on all the billboards around town? He then asks her about all that, and she responds with this.
Crevette: Wait, those eyesores were your doing? Ugh, no wonder this town is in such decline. Only true art can make it shine again. I know, I'll show them all what real art is in a live performance!
That was the last straw for Pepperman! He then starts chasing her through the museum in a comedic routine, before The Noise comes crashing down after falling from the ceiling and knocking Pepperman as well as himself out.
The duo wake up outside the museum and grumble.

HII rwby anon again its been a while sorry dhd ive been on a mission in another world but thats not important right now~
sooo
IVE WATCHED TILL EPISODE 15 !!
IM REALLY ENJOYING IT A LOT, especially with a lot of focus being on vomit boy, i kind of didnt expect that. i LOVE how nora was just. "should i break his legs :D" IN SUCH A FUN AND BUBBLY GIRL VOICE DHDBDBD that was hilarious
AND WHEN PYRRHA TOOK VOMIT BOY ONTO THE ROOF AND HE JUST GOES, "i know im depressed but.. im not THAT depressed" i was DYING of laughter HELPPP JSJSJS
UGH i CANNOT get enough of ruby. shes just like. nope :3 nope : ) nope :] nope :>
UGH its so cute just that little squeakiness in her voice, if that makes sense fhdhd
i am also uh. A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT SHE SAID TO VOMIT BOY
"youre not allowed to be a failure.. because youre a leader !"
i very spesifically remember, before getting into the show, seeing gifs and vids you rebloged of ruby having. not the best of times 😭 because she was their leader and didnt feel perfect / as good as she wanted herself to be, if i remember correctly ? so
yeah 😭😭😭
i ship blake and random faunus boy with a monkey tail /hj
penny seems.. weird,, not in a bad way she is just. a weirdo /pos
LMFAO THE HIGH FIVE BETWEEN WEISS AND RUBY, um *its a combat skirt*
ok so. time to bombard you with questions ( sorry )
who are the faunus how many episodes does the first season have who are the white fang and why does weiss call them degenerates, rapscallions, thieves, murderers and scums
IS IS IS. IS BLAKE A FAUNUS OF THE WHITE FANG !?!
thank you 💅
HELLO RWBY ANON!! I HOPE YOUR MISSION IN ANOTHER WORLD IS GOING WELL LMAO
i love how you consistently refer to jaune as vomit boy, it makes me laugh everytime. and nora, my chaotic beloved, do break that guys legs <3
S T O P, THAT ROOFTOP LINE HAD ME FUCKING CACKLING. IN MY RECENT REWATCH IF THE SHOW, I WAS SHOWING IT TO MY FRIENDS AND THEY THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY TOO
and yes!! ruby’s va is so good, and while she has the squeakiness, you’ll come to see that there’s a lot of emotional range in it 👀
AND YEAH,, RUBY’S JOURNEY AS A LEADER IS A LONG AND COMPLICATED ROAD, BUT MY GOD, THERE IS NOTHING I LOVE MORE THAN STORYLINES LIKE *gestures to v9* THAT (being vague because i don’t wanna spoil you anymore than my blog already has haha)
SUN MY BELOVED!!!! I LOVE HIM SO MUCH; LOYAL TO THE END BUT LACKS ALL BRAIN CELLS. valid to ship them, but their friendship in particular means so much to me and you’ll come to see why a bit later down the road!
AND PENNY MY BELOVED <3333 all i’ll say is that there is something weird with her, and it alludes to the fairy tale she is based on, which i think gets revealed sometime in v2 iirc
AND NOW FOR YOUR QUESTIONS
who are the faunus:
so the faunus are essentially another race in remnant that have physically animalistic features (some might have ears, or tails, etc.)
how many episodes in the first season:
crunchyroll is telling me that the first season has 16 episodes, so you’re right at the finish line!!
who are the white fang:
the white fang has a complicated history, but they are essentially a group of faunus who are fighting for faunus rights and are now known to be an extremist group. (in my personal opinion, i think that rt definitely could’ve handled this plot line a bit better since it is a direct allegory to racism and a lot of black fans have voiced their critiques a lot better than i ever could. there are some threads and video essays by them if that’s something you’d wanna look more into!)
why does weiss call them degenerates, etc?
she’s racist prejudiced towards them based on her upbringing; but she does overcome this fairly quickly SO DONT WORRY.
is blake of the white fang?
she used to be! that mission she was on in the black trailer was actually her with them, but her separating herself from the train was her literally and metaphorically cutting ties with them. she no longer believes in their methods, so she became a huntress to join in the fight for equality in a different way.
I HOPE THAT HELPS CLEAR SOME THINGS UP!

March 24, 2023
I have to admit that I feel a little bit bad holding on to three PhD offers knowing that there might be people on the waitlist vying for a position at one of these places.  Truth be told, I wanted to know where I was going before Spring Break hit, but my Choice E didn’t invite me up until late March.  Technically, I suppose I could (and, probably, should) let go of Choice F or Choice G if I really thought about which one would suit me best should my Choice E visit go poorly, but I am privileged enough that I can willfully choose not to think about that possibility at all right now.  It feels a little selfish and a little immature.  I suppose it brings me some comfort to know that I will (ideally) make a decision over a week before the April 15 deadline and that hopefully someone can make it off the waitlist in that time.
I spoke with an alum of my Choice E lab today and gah it’s really feeling like the place for me.
Recently, I’ve been into watching bento (and husbento lol) box videos??  They’re super aesthetically pleasing, and it’s really fun to watch people make healthy, delicious lunches with lots of variety!  It might not be the most efficient, nor the most cost effective habit to maintain, but it’s calming and I enjoy the ideas!
On a similar note, I have to really start using up the food in my apartment pantry and minimize my grocery purchases.  I only have half a semester left in my apartment, and I’m going to be travelling for (essentially) two of those weeks, so I’m going to need to make a concerted effort to clear out my frozen foods and canned/dry goods.  I’ve got quite a bit of protein stocked up, noodles (so many kinds of noodles), rice... aside from fresh produce/dairy, I shouldn’t need to buy very much at all, really.  I could probably start making more elaborate bento-like lunches myself.  After break, I’ll go in, take inventory, and set out a rough meal prep schedule so I won’t have to take home too many food products, if I can help it.  I really gotta get back into trying new recipes anyway.  Since I’ve been home (and have mostly recovered from The Ailment) I’ve tried two new recipes in two days and am about to go for a third tomorrow, I think!  Having a full spice cabinet certainly makes a difference.  [edit, a day later: uh so the “Gigi Hadid Pasta” that’s been all over pinterest is actually pretty flavorless and I had to add so much extra spice... at least the color was pretty.  I’d make it again but change some of the proportions and also add spinach.]
Half a semester left.
I got my first grad school related reject, so that’s fun.  It was for an outside fellowship I applied for, and I’m luckily not in a position where I needed it for admission anywhere, but it still would’ve been nice to have an extra boost or to defer funding in case I needed it.  The reviewer’s comments were useful, but I think it’s funny that my 3.9+ GPA in related disciplines could be considered average or even below average (upon critical thought, I believe they might have been considering my course history and were wondering how exactly orgo and biochem were going to help me pin down functional morphology, and that critique makes sense).  I suppose I agree that I should have sought more awards, but ughhhhh UGH.  I don’t wanna beg to be recognized and then maybe not even get it (though that’s exactly what I’ve done here with that fellowship so)??  This certainly won’t be my last outside grant/fellowship attempt because I do want to be recognized.
Of all the Lost-esque shows I’ve watched, my absolute least favorite has got to be La Brea.  That show might even be one of my least favorite shows I’ve ever watched ever.  The writing, plot, and logic are just so terribly bad and I might have to drop it after this season because I am simply not impressed at all.  I love sci-fi and as a result am pretty good at suspending my disbelief, but this show is based around time travel and they’re not explaining any of the intricacies or limitations of the technology, so every solution works Just Because and any potential problem that is irrelevant to the central plot is not discussed does not exist and I hate it.  There’s so much hand-waving that it does not feel immersive to me.  I genuinely do not think very much while watching television, so the fact that I’m constantly frustrated by the holes I’m poking into the plot/solutions/logic irks me.  And then any problem that does arise to occupy any characters not involved in the main plotline that episode feels gimmicky and fillery and dumb.  Some of the main characters are barely compelling and others are simply not, and in this economy my attention is too valuable to be wasted on things I don’t enjoy.
Today I’m thankful for that conversation I had with the alum... I’ve heard nothing but good things about “my” lab in particular aieeee I’m so excited for next week’s trip.. literally a Spring Break Part 2 (except it’s not really a break and I’ll kind of be pretending to be an extrovert for four days straight (which I guess is okay because I’ve been a total recluse for the past week)).  Since it’s probably where I’m going to attend (and because they wanna be touristy), both of my parents will be “joining me” (aka existing in the same vicinity but entirely leaving me to my own devices unless I need them) this time, and I’ve assigned them homework to check out some of the neighborhoods and apartment complexes to get an idea of the best places to live.  Very thankful for supportive parents, very thankful for a financial situation that allows them to support me in this way.  Also thankful for my two profs who record lectures... they’re really the unsung heroes of my semester tbh.

Ahh.. Lunter my pookies, yeah I ship them too because I love how easily playful they get together and I want that dynamic in my ships I'm so bored of filtered pining and yearning despite I like that trope too.
And yes.. That was Scorptra I was screamed when Scorpia's first introduction and hugging Catra and shipped them immediately, seeing their relationship evolve in times was made me.. smile and season 4 when finally Scorpia stand up to her and left her too and Catra and DT's talk.. the last strike to her was DT in Scorpia form.. I was expecting lot from s5 like an idiot then they.. rushed up the apology and pairing Scorfuma together
I'm still devastated
Once Lumity became canon, Amity's screentime went up by 150% and her character and plot relevance took a nosedive. But noo... can't critique the writing of canonically queer characters.
Ugh, I honestly hate Perfuma as a character. She was the most boring out of the main cast, and she was the main princess behind the infantilizing of Entrapta. Like, I wish that got addressed!! Just a quick "well, at least the Hoarde didn't put me on a fucking LEASH" would be nice if you don't have time to devote an episode 2 it.
I like Catradora, but I spent my first watch of Spop hard headcanoning them as siblings and not liking the ship because of that so I feel "??!!" when it became canon. That being said, I rewatched the show with them as a romance already in mind as it wasn't as jarring as I expected. Eventually I came to ship it.
But I enjoy Catra x Scorpia way more tbh because it fits into my favorite ship dynamic of pain.

ugh it really is heartbreaking there’s only one episode of toh left, especially with how quickly fandoms die these days after a show ends. It’s really hitting me now how much we have to miss out on because Disney cut the show short :( every time a new episode comes out, I feel so excited only to be hit with a bittersweet feeling right after. And then seeing a bunch of posts critiquing the show runners decisions, like they aren’t working with their hands tied behind their back, makes it even worse. Like, of course, the show’s lacking meaningful character development. Of course, plot lines were dropped and side characters had to be forgotten. Of course, things felt rushed. They’re trying to condense what feels like 3-6(?) seasons into 3 episodes. We’re just lucky we got this. how this show was handled by Disney really marked a change in animation and i just hope it gets better fr

Season 4 Episode 11 “If Not For Hope” displays one of my favorite Claire and Jamie moments.
Episode background info:
Claire, Jamie, and Ian are traveling to upstate New York to hopefully find Roger with the Mohawk tribe. Jamie is crushed, ashamed, and heartbroken by his actions and by Bree’s subsequent reaction. As we know, Jamie beat Roger badly when he came to Fraser’s Ridge to find Bree, thinking he was Bree’s attacker. Ian then sells Roger to the Mohawk at Jaimie’s request to, “get rid of him”.
On their travels to New York, we see Jamie and Claire are distant from one another. There’s not much emotional or physical interaction other than their combined stress and frustration over the situation. In the beginning of this episode, we see Ian make a plea to Claire to “go to Jamie” when he looks distraught. She replies, “Why? Does he need help?”. Ian responds, “So you’re still angry with him then?”. And Claire says, quite plainly, “No, is that what you think?”. Ian is shocked she’s supposedly not angry with him.
We finally see the resolve between Jamie and Claire in this scene. It is so raw, tender, emotional, sweet, and reassuring. It shows just how strong their relationship is, that they can repair their hurt feelings towards one another and find closeness again.
I MEAN, THIS IS THEIR DAUGHTER. It’s a whole new territory for them to be dealing with a parenting issue TOGETHER. Jamie wants nothing more than to be a good father to Bree (it’s what he’s always wanted). So to see Jamie in so much pain over letting Bree AND Claire down is tough. Comparing himself to Frank broke me. Sam’s acting here is incredible. His body language tells you everything (closed off shoulders, taking his hand away from Claire) but his face, tears, and quiet and shakey voice say even more. Caitriona’s acting is just as moving. I love the way she rubs his face, just petting him and reassuring him. And to see her tears and the longing for closeness to him in her eyes. She also wants nothing more than to parent their daughter together.
Their kissing so seamlessly turns into the intimacy that is second nature to them. It makes me think about the first episode in the series (season 1), when Claire says that sex is the way her and Frank find each other again after the world war. Admittedly, I don’t like thinking about Frank and Claire together like that. But I find it really interesting how different it feels when Jamie and Claire find each other again in these intimate moments. They are pouring their hearts out into one another. They’re finding each other EMOTIONALLY, not just physically. When Jamie first opens up the blankets for Claire, I wasn’t sure if this was going to be a hug, or just a cuddle. It would make sense if it was. But the fact that it turns into such sweet emotional and relationship affirming love making solidifies the strength of their bond. The “I’m sorry’s” from both of them right before we see the camera pull away and see Claire’s hip movements- UGH.
Such an underrated scene in my book. I’ve seen some critiques online that people don’t like Season 4. But I find Season 4 absolutely moving and intriguing. I hope you enjoy this scene as much as I do!

Ok so kind of hated lord of the rings: the rings of power and want to talk out my thoughts on it here. The first thing is I could care less about lore or accuracy stuff or the dumb racist and sexist things people have said these are just me not really liking the show.
So to start this is kind of broad critique but what I find interesting and I think Tolkien did best was this large world building through history and language. The story and characters were while important were somewhat secondary and in a lot of ways a way to show off those other things. What Peter Jackson did so well was to turn the story of lord of the rings into this epic action series that was in this rather dense and lore driven story and get rid of a lot of that for characters and story. The time period this show is based on is pretty much all just from lore dumps and broad history lessons of what happened. Because of this I think she show suffered not having any sort of central narrative to follow and instead it’s three different stories non of which felt important or that interesting. I found out recently that this is the show runners first shows and you can kind of tell like post the show finishing and knowing some lore stuff I could follow but everything felt so vague and each week I didn’t understand what I was watching or why for some stuff.
I feel like the harfoot and the elf working with the human bits needed the most work because this was the stuff that Tolkien did so well and it just didn’t work and they just needed some more time and some rewrites to really make it work and it could have been great.
Galdariel was my favorite character and after the first episode it felt like she was sort of side lined to looking for Sauron and while I figured out the reveal before the show showed us I thought that was clever and was definitely just a keep the story the way it is just fine tune it and really make it work. Like get rid of the main problem of that terrible horse riding scene and just figure her out a bit better play up the romance a bit more and get it to work.
The rest of the Numenor characters needed some major rewrites I could not stand them like any of them and there was obviously talented actors but the dialogue was so bad and uninteresting and so many plots of oh a needs to happen well but b oh darn but c ok a will happen now.
The elf dwarf stuff I think needed a lot of cutting there was a lot there that was just there to fill up time and had no importance to this story and I think just could have been used more wisely.
And yeah I will probably torture myself and skip through season 2 as well but I just don’t get people saying this was better than house of the dragon like I don’t think you like tv you like your hand being held and being told your smart for following a tv show. Ugh that was harsh and I don’t think I mean it but again kind of yeah so much of the praise is oh they have clear good and evil but an interesting plot of but the orcs need a home as well and like yeah sure but that’s not really what was going on and nothing in show shows this to be a thing to care about. We don’t see orcs being persecuted of just wanting to live and having to turn to violence just to live or anything to show anything besides them being evil and killing to further help Sauron . Which again really good plot twist.

Oh no, I've been thinking.
Okay, I can't stop thinking about something ending-related. I don't know this for certain, but based on previous statements and such, it feels like the writers were always aiming for a bittersweet ending. Like, no matter what else happened or how the story evolved, come hell (lol) or high water, that ending couldn't just be happy. For reasons. I guess.
Now, I don't mind a bittersweet ending ... if it makes sense for the ending to be bittersweet.
I critique stories for a living. I'm literally taking a break from the developmental edit of someone's novel to write this post. And the persistent thought that bugs me about the Rory setup is that it is so artificial. Time travel is a pain in the narrative ass. Time travel suddenly introduced in the sixth season of a show that has never touched on time travel? As an editor, I probably would've pointed out that time travel for the purpose of angst, especially time travel without rules that make sense ("I don't know anything about time travel! Except I do know you have to take the most painful path!"), seemingly introduced as a final ploy to make that bittersweet ending work ... well, to me, it breaks the narrative contract they established with the audience. Your audience is going to be confused. An editor's job is to alert the writer to any potential confusion so it can be fixed before the story goes to print, etc. Confused audiences get mad, annoyed, frustrated. They feel hurt. They put down the book and don't pick it up again. Usually, writers don't want that. But they're so close to their work that they need a completely outside perspective to say, "Hey, I'm not sure you realize this, but..."
I mean, I keep referring to Rory as "deus ex daughter" because in literary terms, she is a blatant deus ex machina. Rory is the god in the machine of the Bittersweet Ending.
Now, I loved a lot of S6. I did. My overall feeling about the season is not negative. But ... I can't stop thinking about why the things I didn't like REALLY didn't work for me.
I loved the emotional growth we saw in Lucifer and Chloe facilitated by the question of parenting and parental love. I did. And I would have loved to see a lot of those notes hit not with an angel kid out of nowhere ... but with the daughter already in the picture. Especially because it would have circumvented the icky idea that a child has to be one's flesh and blood to induce such feelings. I also understand that coronavirus and Scarlett's age and schedule made this difficult. But I just can't swallow that the only way to wrap up the story of this show--a show about found family, non-traditional family, friendship, connection, FREE WILL, love in all its many shapes and forms and colors ... was to introduce a brand new character via a device (time travel) that fails to make sense almost every time it's used, no matter the medium. (And then had only that brand new character be there when her mother died. Don't even get me started. Ugh.)
If time travel was always going to be on the table, couldn't we have found a more plausible way to use it with the characters we already knew, loved, and had spent four or five seasons with? A time-travelling older Trixie, say? If you're going to use the impossible device, just ... twist it another way to make it work.
Okay. Okay. So, leaving Trixie aside for now just like the show did, let's say we leave everything about the season the same, even Rory. Do you know what ending makes more narrative sense?
Future Rory sacrificing herself by NOT forcing Lucifer to make a cruel and impossible "choice" so the baby that might have been her grows up with a family that loves her. Chloe's already pregnant. That's not going to be undone. And this nonsense of a "closed time loop" falls apart if you side-eye it for even a few seconds. The Rory who came from the future never exists except in the memories of those she met when she came back from that future. Chloe and Lucifer lose that daughter even as they gain the new one whose existence is not a tool of unrelenting fate because wow this show has always been about free will what the heck happened there yikes. And a choice made under the duress Chloe and Lucifer were under, forced out of them, and forcing them to "choose" a life apart for *handwave* Reasons has nothing to do with free will. A "choice" made at gunpoint is not a real choice. Future Rory basically bullied them into ensuring she got to exist--something, quite frankly, neither her parents would have done.
Instead, how much more appropriately bittersweet is it if Chloe and Lucifer lose that child while gaining one who, because of that angry time-travelling version, will never suffer as she did.
Also as an editor: the groundwork for my version is already laid, by the way. It should have been Rory learning about the importance of free will over fate. The importance of personal sacrifice. The importance of not thinking your young self knows best ... because experience and therapy will help rid you of that self-centered world view. That's the contract the writers made with us with this show. And Chloe and Lucifer have already BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT. (See: the end of S4.)
Furthermore, this season finally HAD Chloe and Lucifer DEAL WITH the only thing that actually would have contributed to a narrative, characterization-based reason for Lucifer to disappear: His history of running and his putting Chloe on a pedestal. Once they really talked that out, his "disappearance" became a Rory-induced trauma of inexplicable fate that flies in the face of all the progress Lucifer made over six seasons. (I would rather have had more of that and less of mysterious disappearing oh no plot.)
And I'm sorry, the "Once you get to Hell you're going to work 24/7" excuse given for why Lucifer won't be around and why he can't make time for Chloe until she's DEAD(????!???) is ... it's lame. If AMENADIEL AS GOD can make time for his kid's birthday party, I refuse to believe Lucifer can't work out some Hell/Earth-work/life balance. Never mind that in the show about partnerships, the Bittersweet Ending just ... destroyed it. Chloe was planning on being God's consultant; she could have helped Lucifer solve Hell's Trauma Mysteries (it's what she did with Jimmy, setting up that yeah, Lucifer could do it alone like he accidentally did with Lee, but doing it with HIS TRUTHSEEKING PARTNER would be more effective). Just as Lucifer could have continued helping HER solve some of the problems within "that corrupt little organization" of hers.
tl;dr: I think the writers fixated so completely on their version of Bittersweet that they missed all the foreshadowing, groundwork, and clues that were right there, already built into the story, poised for a different kind of ending than the one they once imagined. That's why so many parts of it feel almost-but-not-quite right and why these aspects are so off-putting. That's why it's just not ... organic. It's something squeezed into a box it grew out of ages ago.
Ironically, certain elements of this season involved the writers insisting on the FATE they decided long ago instead of letting the story and the characters have the FREE WILL to choose a different, more fitting, more organic ending--one that had long-since evolved past that original flavor of Bittersweet.

Didn’t Need Burrow (August 7th-September 13th)
Anonymous asked:
Didn’t Need Burrow: Ladybug and Chat Noir will be asked to participate in judging a competition that Marinette and Adrien are both a part of. Ladybug will want to vote for herself as Marinette, but Tikki will tell her(once detransformed and while she is snacking) that she can’t because then people will know that Marinette is Ladybug. Chat Noir, meanwhile, will freely vote for Adrien with no repercussions or drawbacks, and Adrien will end up winning the competition. Marinette will admit that she was “so silly” to even think of voting for herself, especially since “Adrien needs the award more so that I do” despite being rich, white, male, and “perfect”(oh, I’m sorry, “purrfect”!), since all of Marinette’s legitimate problems of anxiety, dyspraxia, and the like get thrown out the window because the writers’ perfect sunshine boy incel stand-in has a “saaad home life!”, and Marinette needs to give him pity and put his feelings above his rather than wish for her own success. Cuz Girl Power.
tbh, given the leaks script, I’d reverse that and saying that Adrien voted for LadyNoir as Couple of the Year.
Anonymous asked:
Didn’t Need Burrow: Marinette and Adrien will reveal their identities, and Marinette actually WILL be disappointed that the boy who goofed off in fights and didn’t take no for an answer is none other than her perfect modeling celebrity crush. However, rather than this being a point towards Adrien needing to learn how to improve himself and accept Marinette’s feelings, this scene is used to make HER look bad(because of course it is) and she is blamed for expecting Adrien to be perfect(despite being encouraged and told to see him as such), and told that she should be happy that Chat was hitting on her even when she didn’t like it or it got in the way of battle plans, likely by Alya, because it was her true love under the mask all along. Eventually she “learns her lesson”(ick) and comes to accept Adrichat for who he is, warts and all. Bonus if she has a flashback to when Chat said “if you saw me without my mask you wouldn’t be able to resist me” as she realizes that he was right.
Didn’t Need Burrow? More like “Didn’t Need to Think About This”
i hate it
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: Luka will be Chat Blanc "2.0"
But Luka doesn’t have Chat-level favoritism going so Bunnyx won’t be there to defend him from consequences.
Anonymous asked:
We will have Ladybug!Alya in Marinette's akumatization episode. Obviously everyone would think that she is "better" than "old" Ladybug. (Bonus points if Ladybug!Alya don't "alienate" Chat Noir, mostly by catering to his whims)
Oh, of course! No one will miss the “old” Ladybug.
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: Bob Roth is akumatized into Rip Off, a supervillain with power to copy anything he sees (including powers of heroes)
Okay but that’s genius.
(I know we already had it in “Miraculer” but I like this more.)
Anonymous asked:
DNB: Now that Luka knows their identities, he will push the Love Square in a romantic manner. Stans would be totally fine with this because it doesn't interfere with their endgame :)
Well, obviously!
I’m just waiting for them to basically say that the secret identities don’t matter and, because they like one side, also means they like the other side.
Because forget nuance, am I right?
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: In the end, (after Adrienette gets together) Narrator reveals himself (herself?) as Alya with words "that's how I helped my bestie [Marinette] get a relationship with love of her life [Adrien]" or something similar.
wait, Alya, are you filming a Ladybug biography
why did you include all the humilation
why
That explains her making herself look good though.
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: Luka will finally reveal that he knows Heroes' secret identities... to Alya, who obviously decide to hide from Marinette that Luka knows her identity (Bonus Points if reason provided by Alya why she is doing this is utterly ridiculous)
AAAAAAAAAAAA
I guess Luka would have to realize that Alya knows. Bonus if he tells her Chat’s identity too so love square shipping can commence.
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: "Knitting Fairy" will be name of Marinette's akumatized form.
Can you say “reused design”? I certainly can, we’re used to it.
Anonymous asked:
Didn’t Need Burrow:
Luka keeping his knowledge about the identities (esp. Ladybug’s) will somehow blow up in a way for the writers to paint him in a bad light, probably ending with Marinette not trusting him. (As well as no hint of irony that Adrien did the same thing for completely selfish reasons in Chat Blanc).
MiraculousMX: Platonic soulmates!
us: Source??
Anonymous asked:
DNB: If LS gets reversed, Adrien complains about Marinette having other friends. Not just being friends with Luka or any other guys, but friends PERIOD, showing the same jealousy/desire for his 'love interest' to be isolated as Chat Noir. These MASSIVE RED FLAGS are treated as Just More Innocent Sadrien Things, because he's sOoOoOo Sad and SoOoOoO Lonely~
Oh god, now I had an awful thought that this is where Adrien getting jealous of Luka, and Luka feels bad/”knows what’s best” so he either ditches Marinette/finds an excuse to leave or makes sure that Adrien gets his time with her.
Because it’s the love square so it’s “important” that Marinette spend time with Adrien.
Anonymous asked:
Dnb: assuming the Senti-Adrien theory is true, in the season finale, Viperion joins the fight, stops SM from using the ladybug an cat miraculi by going back in time only to use them by himself, wishing for Adrien to be a real boy (and love Marinette). Of course Luka needs to give something in exchange, worst case scenario, his life.
That got really dark.
Though tbh with how much they push Luka and Marinette around, one of them will probably have to give up something huge for Adrien (they both already sacrificed their relationship, so--).
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: If Chat Noir joins Shadow Moth then he is treated by both Gabriel and Heroes as his greatest asset, even through he is still complete joke that is defeated by rest of Heroes faster than Mr Pigeon in "Timetagger". (Bonus points if Heroes defeat him by "Backhand Offhand", Offscreen or he is defeated by "Friendly Fire" from Akuma of the Week due to his own stupidity)
tbh I could probably do more sad math with “how often Chat Noir/Cataclysm is useless,” bonus if it’s put up against characters/Ladybug stroking his ego.
Anonymous asked:
DNB: Adrien's fears concerning Ladybug are made more explicit through a nightmare/vision (possibly akuma-induced) of Ladybug calling him unreliable/saying she doesn't need him anymore because she has partners she can actually COUNT on. Naturally, this is treated as Pure Sadrien Hours rather than a fair critique. Bonus if he ditches/forces her to beg for his assistance AGAIN to soothe his poor bruised baby ego.
*“Malediktator” flashbacks, but Adrien instead of Chloe*
Anonymous asked:
Didn't Need Burrow: Adrien/Chat Noir skips out on a fight/akuma attack for some spiteful, selfish reason or another. Ladybug handles it without him, either completely through her own skill or with help from Rena/other heroes. Adrien then angsts about 'not being needed', with Marinette's 'Mistake of the Day' being that she didn't cater to his pity party due to being too busy DOING HER DAMNED JOB.
me seeing that one leaked script where they talk about how Chat/Cataclysm would make things easier: *sigh*
Anonymous asked:
Didn't Need Burrow: Plagg will encourage Adrien to act even more selfishly, skipping more battles and being even brattier. This is so his stans can blame Plagg for being 'a bad influence' on their perfect angel, even when it's clear the two of them are on the same wavelength. Oooh, he's twisting his rubber arm; how AWFUL--! Adrien would NEVER do all these Awful Things he's already done if he didn't have Plagg~! What a bad kitty~!
“rubber arm” jdfkgjndfjgfg
tbh Plagg already is super laidback and doesn’t really like transforming/complains about going into battle, so this isn’t much of a stretch.
Anonymous asked:
DNB: "Gabriel Agreste" or other episodes will reveal that Gabriel flew many, if not ALL of the same Red Flags his son displays on a regular basis. The narrative treats this as though this makes Gabriel more 'sweet, sad and sympathetic' rather than illustrating that both of them are dangerously entitled and generally awful.
This sounded really intriguing as a sort of “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” thing until that last sentence kicked in.
That’s damn accurate to what they’d do too, ugh.
Anonymous asked:
DNB: Plagg is the one that discovers that Gabriel is Hawk/Shadowmoth, but is forcibly sworn to silence by Adrien. Bonus if Adrien somehow gives this command without learning what Plagg is trying to tell him -- i.e. he get irritated and orders Plagg to shut up in a way that bars him from EVER saying what he was attempting to say -- so that Adrien's stans can claim it was all a big misunderstanding and blame Plagg entirely for it. Or Marinette. Somehow.
Oh oh oh!
Alternatively, Adrien silences Plagg without realizing that he has that kind of power (like saying, “you can’t tell anyone!” and we see the magic hit Plagg’s mouth), so the fandom can say, “HE DOESN’T KNOOOW THAT HE DID IT.”
Anonymous asked:
dntb: Luka is gonna be villianised in some way for not telling Marinette he knows the identities of both of them
Meanwhile, Alya, slipping the bouncer her free pass.
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: After one of the kwamis makes one snickering comment too many, Marinette snaps and tells them all to shut up (with obvious outcome). Narrative obviously equals it to scene between Gabriel and Noroo from "Sandboy" (Bonus Points if Narrative deems Marinette worse than Gabriel, because "Gabriel forbid Noroo from talking as joke")
oh my goooooood
Marinette: *snaps because she’s stressed out*
the fandom: SHE SO MEAN!!! ;o;
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: Adrien's reveal as Sentimonster just for additional souce of "sad points" for him
this DNB: i am inevitable
mystic-lionroar asked:
Didn't Need Burrow: The writers' Status-Quo allergy kicks in when someone very pointedly implies Chloe, Lila and/or Gabriel work for Hawk Moth with how many Akumas they tend to cause... only to get reminded point blank that "Hawk Moth is the sole one responsible for this mess, no one else". Cue two episodes later, both the characters and the writers' memories of this scene are erased. What erased it? ╰( ・ ᗜ ・ )╯Why, Marinette can be held responsible for this one, of course! (Me: (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻)
╰(‵□′)╯
OH MY GOOOOD
“Crocoduel” also basically already blamed Marinette for two akumatizations so at this point we’re just waiting.
Anonymous asked:
DNB: To further cement the whole 'destined to be' shlock, after the shock of the eventual reveal wears off, we get a call back to how frequently Chat Noir told Ladybug that they were meant for each other and that she 'was the only one who didn't see it'. Marinette agrees that she was silly and foolish for not recognizing it sooner, parroting Adrien's bullshit in order to further cement the notion that she's HAPPILY accepting her 'fate' to be nothing more than his personal prize.
You can’t see it but I have my head in my hands in grief.
Anonymous asked:
DNB: Adrien's gross sense of entitlement towards Ladybug will become even more explicit, with him angrily ranting about how he DESERVES to 'get the girl'. No matter how awful and nasty he gets, the narrative continues to treat him as though he's 100% right to be pissed off at her for DARING to have agency or thinking she has a say in things. As clearly, the biggest mistake Marinette has ever made is thinking she gets to have Opinions or make her own decisions. G-girl power...?
Marinette needing to be constantly told what’s best for her by other people and it’s okay because she needs to accept+follow all opinions.
end me
Anonymous asked:
DNB: The double standard between Adrien and other characters will be more noticeable. Adrien will still be put on a pedestal.
Because no one will notice Adrien if they didn’t put him on a metaphorical and physical pedastal.
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: Foxy Cat and CaraBug
omg Fox Adrien.is one of the worst hero choices I’ve ever heard fjdgjfjdglfkdg
I could at least see why Marinette thought that Adrien fit the snake since the narrative gushes for him so hard.
Anonymous asked:
Didn’t Need Burrow: As a result of being written by a straight white male writing team, the show starts to use Marinette’s girliness against her. From her love of pink being mocked to the kwamis admitting(in the spirit of another DNB) that they don’t respect Marinette because she’s “too girly”, to her fashion designing being treated as a cutesy but ultimately fickle pastime(in the spirit that all teenage girls’ interests are treated), the show absolutely throws Girl Power out the window in favor of giving Marinette absolute hell for daring to present herself in a traditionally feminine way, treating her femininity as the butt of a joke that no one is laughing at. Bonus points of someone says(or even outright tells her to her face) that she’s “such a girl”, as if that’s supposed to be an insult. Alternatively, this happens to Rose instead of Marinette, as she’s just as girly if not more so than her, or it happens to both of them(regardless of whether or not it’s at the same time).
WOOOOW
I mean, honestly, yeah.
Anonymous asked:
Didn’t Need Burrow: Things other characters did that were bad will be retconned into things that Marinette did instead, or will otherwise be retconned into being her fault, no matter how improbable or contradictory. Meanwhile, bad things characters did to Marinette or good things characters did FOR Marinette will be retconned into nonexistence.
I MEAN THEY BLAMED MARINETTE FOR “SILENCER” SO--
MATTER OF TIME.
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: Simultaneous Akumatization of Manon, Chris, Ella and Etta, obviously when they are babysat by Marinette, because otherwise ML Writers wouldn't be able to paint it as Marinette's fault
oh god
please no
I mean, not even just to blame Marinette for it, but I can’t even stand these kids when they’re on their own, MUCH LESS TOGETHER.
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: If Adrien gets akumatized, then it would be just Chat Blanc with shoulder pads and crown
Is this a reference to my Miracle Queen post?
Because yes.
Anonymous asked:
Didn't need burrow: In Hack-San Chat Noir will pull a Sentibubler and refuse to listen to Alya with the Ladybug Miraculous as he doesn't have a brain unless he can progress the not so progressive four-sided Hellfire, which is actually still the best-case-scenario. I mean he could just not come at all, since he's only there to flirt with and seduce Ladybug with unfunny jokes.
Anonymous asked:
DNB: Adrien causes problems because of Alyabug.
ugggggh
Anonymous asked:
DNB: Alya will immediately have access to things like the creation of charms despite how long it took for Marinette to be able to do that.
Wait--
If she doesn’t, did they literally just give Alya the ladybug miraculous because they knew that Markov wouldn’t have a way of hiding the amulet on him and they didn’t feel like putting it on his model???
Anonymous asked:
Didn’t Need Burrow: Alya’s Ladybug name is “Coccinelle” aka “Ladybug” in French. Or something equally lazy such as The Red Spotted One or the Scarlett Beetle. Even if it sounds cool at first glance, it will ultimately boil down to a plain and obvious name, because apparently EVERY superhero’s name has to so blatantly relate to the animal their Miraculous is based off of. For some reason. Somehow. -_-
fhkgjfdkgdfg okay but “The Red Spotted One” made me laugh.
Anonymous asked:
Hack-San DNB’s:
• Chat Noir will be upset that Ladybug trusted her miraculous to someone else.
• There will be a comment on how Alya was a just as good, if not better Ladybug than Marinette.
• Alya’s performance as LB will be used as another instance to show Marinette made the ‘right choice’ telling her her identity.
• Using the Horse to teleport back instead giving the earrings to Alya will not be mentioned as an option.
• Scene of Adrichat being sad about ‘feeling replaced’.
Especially on that “comment that Alya is just as good, if not better,” one, it probably won’t even be used as a reassurance for Marinette like, “oh, that’s good to know that I’m not the only one who can be Ladybug,” it’ll just be praise for Alya.
Anonymous asked:
Hack-San DNB: Chat Noir gets angry with LB for not telling him she was leaving & she has to apologize for it.
(Despite making sure there was a backup Ladybug to protect Paris, unlike Chat in the NY special who left the city completely unprotected).
Convenient.
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: "Dearest Family" (episode where both of Marinette's parents are akumatized) will be about Marinette learning "true value" of Chat Noir
Either that or incorporating Adrien into the family.
Anonymous asked:
Don't Need a Burrow: Psycomedian will be blatant Joker rip-off
You can just say “all akuma in the season will either be rip-offs of themselves or past akuma,” it’s okay. :P
Anonymous asked:
Another DNB for Hack-San, since we see Jagged Stone in the trailer, so if they show it..:
The “most precious possession” of Jagged’s will be Fang and not, y’know, either of his children.
I missed that trailer.
Honestly there could be some funny moments with the concept, but if Jagged is the only joke made about it then yes, I will be very bitter.
Alternatively, Jagged picks his guitar instead.
Anonymous asked:
DNB: In the Alyabug episode, Alya will either be Practically Perfect In Every Way™, or will royally screw up in a way that will somehow lead to Marinette. Either way, Cat Noir will flirt with the new Ladybug, or pull a Sentibubbler. Or both. There may or may not be a comment about how Alyabug's costume is so much better than Marinette's despite being a fashion designer.
dkfgkjdfgjf I adore how this whole thing is just, “there’s so many ways it could go wrong!”

Okay, I’ve watched 9 episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina now, I think that’s enough to form an opinion of it. I know we’ve got a while to go still for the first season, but 9 episodes in and I’m ready to make a judgement call on it.
It’s OKAY. It does some things very well (horror elements, the VISCERAL brutality of combat is extremely effective, I continually find myself wincing at how much a blow looks like it HURTS, quiet moments shared between two or three characters at most, the voice acting is obviously great) but it struggles with some very importang things that drag it down in my opinion. Pacing, keeping track of where all the characters are in combat, expository dialogue being utterly unnatural, basic establishing knowledge of magic and how it scales, religion, any kind of world building really,  blending 3D elements into 2D, and the sense of time both between episodes and within moments in combat.
I could get into spoilers/specifics but honestly I have SO MUCH I could complain about how nearly perfect it was/could have been with just a few tweaks, and I know nobdoy’s gonna read it because this week has further cemented the fact that this fandom is INSANELY defensive if you make any critique whatsoever, god forbid we acknowledge the human beings behind this IP are fallible and could stand to improve certain aspects in their storytelling with gentle nods at what was less than stellar.
Ugh. Anyway. I still think it’s worth a look if you’re trying to get into CR but are intimidated by the time investment of the live play episodes. It does a good enough job, especially if you’re already familiar with D&D. If you’re not... oof... might be rough, but worth a look. I’d give the show a B, maybe B- depending on how generous or not I’m feeling. Frequently bounces back and forth between like, C- and A-  moments depending on how good or bad a particular scene is handled.

Note
I'm a little late but I just saw your post from a year ago about latinx rep in good girls and its sad reflecting back on it and how the show could've done better. Rio was just another stereotype, I hate how he was ambitiously latino and there was just no connection to his culture. Was he first, 2nd, or 3rd Gen? If he was 1st Gen it didn't make sense to have the family speak English. One thing that always annoyed me is how OOC he was at times and how the writers purposely made him out to be like some brown aggressive misogynistic man. They didn't bother making him complex. In a way I'm glad the show got canceled. As a Mexican woman the way Rio was written was racist.
Wah, I’ve been sitting on answering your ask. I wanted to tease your ask apart and respond to it sentence by sentence. But... my brain kept rechazandolo, so now I have feelings dump instead.
Since Good Girls ended, I have been parsing through how I feel about S4 and GG overall — sometimes more positively, sometimes more negatively. Then, I flip to reminding myself it’s not that serious (it's just tv! this is supposed to be my leisure activity!). Then, I waffle back to reflecting.
So, no textual analysis just feels and whining under the cut. I know folks are still mourning the end of the show and I don't want to yuck anyone's yum. Tagging with #ggnegativity.
My short answer is that Good Girls is my beloved, sometimes joyful, sometimes hurtful, complicated little show. Even now that we’re no longer getting new episodes I’m wary of sifting through the information we have about Rio because it’s a mess and it seems like a lot of his character was poorly thought out (ahem, all those dumb messages from Bill Krebs confirming multiple instances of lack of intentionality or care!).
I say this because I was tempted to start responding to you by riffing off of your comment with, “y'know, now that you say that, I think he’s third or fourth gen…”, pero who cares? And the point was never specifically about what gen he is, or even more specifically about... lol, I was going to say it doesn't matter what nationality he was, they just needed to pick one. Ugh, but the wording of that is too glib. The lack of intentionality behind these details feels sanitized to me, it feels very white gaze, it feels lazy.
However, I could have forgiven a lot of this weak character construction if his baseline, plot-related characterization on-screen was more consistent. But, Rio was often used as a plot device in a way that often fell flat for me, a weekly recurring bogeyman whether his antagonism made sense or not. On one hand, I feel for the creative team, because I think they were in a hard place, trying to avoid romanticizing Rio, and trying to seemingly backtrack the sexualization of him in Season 2, but... Idk, it's complicated.
Retrospectively, it’s sitting with me how much Good Girls is rooted in whiteness. While it's something I discerned before (lol, most obviously with 2x13 and in S3 with Lucy's disposability), you know how some shows get to their third or fourth season and finally start investing in their marginalized characters? It’s a crappy thing to hold out hope for, they're crumbs! But, I was. And we did get some Rio worldbuilding. But, ultimately, it felt weak to me -- under-conceptualized or under-worked.
For example, I liked Nick as a Bigger Bad who drove Rio and Beth together. I also thought that Nick's non-existent moral code was a lovely foil to Rio's, and that this contrast humanized Rio in a way that he needed. It also cast a new light on Rio's behavior of the earlier seasons, outside of Beth's perception in a way that I thought was healthy and needed. Great, meaty stuff! However, Nick and Rio's relationship came across as shallow to me. There really did not seem to be a lived-in quality to their scenes. The show really struggled with that element overall -- even with the three lead protagonists (their decades-long history with each other and interactions between their families being largely absent). I wonder why they made that choice.
It's strange because on the flip side we got a hefty amount of contextualization for MLM guy Vance and Annie's bf Kevin... Even that cop who Mick killed! All white men, too.
Me da pena.
Or maybe the thing that bothers me is that those scenes between Nick and Rio didn't center Rio's perspective effectively? Despite the one-on-one scenes being outside of Beth's framing (Rio being a secondary character typically tethered to Beth's story arc), there still was a lot of distance between Rio and the viewer? Like I think of Vance in his kitchen with his wife and child, and the way we as viewers were brought into that to empathize with him, and I think of the distance of Nick+Rio boxing scene or the scenes at the bar. Argh! It's hard to pinpoint without the textual analysis I feel too grumpy to do. It was such a narrative choice to keep Rio aloof and I side-eye it.
Anyway --
Overall, the writing room/show creators/decision-makers didn't seem to consider Latine/x/a/o viewers throughout the crafting of Good Girls and that sucks. It really feels like I'm being told to conform to the white gaze in watching the show, and after 2x13 that makes me feel prickly and defensive. A part of me yearns to do a rewatch to map Rio’s character (and inconsistencies) but I still yield joy from Good Girls — it’s been my main comfort story during the pandemic. I also rendered joy from Season 4 specifically — some of those scenes between the leads at the end were phenom!!
I am leaning into what's bringing me joy right now, so I feel hesitant to stew in critique, even while I also feel some sort of need to make sense of the hurtful racializations. I have a compulsion to write them all down on the same post or list -- somewhere where I can see them all at once and understand. But, at the moment, it’s not a use of my time and energy that feels good. Opting into fics and writing is bringing me a lot of joy during hard times.
I have to close with one final whine, that I am SO fatigued with television options right now. I find myself desperately wishing for more TV out there whose priority audience isn't only white folks. Good Girls isn't alone in its treatment of Latinx characters, or alone in mishandling characters of color or gay characters, or prioritization of empathy for white het male characters, but certainly, creating something more thoughtful shouldn't be so hard.

buddie have u been watching UK v The World? thots on that and/or S14?? (I've got my faves on each but don't wanna put in the ask in case it might be spoilery since it's technically mid-season for both)
Hi!! I've been watching both and I DEFINITELY have thoughts but I've been lazy about expressing them here more than vaguely. I have time, so let's get into it :) Sticking it behind a read more obviously due to spoilers!
OK, UK vs the World first....before it started I wanted Lemon to win...well lol, back to the drawing board I guess. (for the record I think her being in the bottom was BS, but I am biased, so...)
As of now I'm pulling hard for Pangina, I love her, she's a gem. Please don't send her home anytime soon, y'all...
I just want Baga to go home, tbh - I don't have a problem with anyone else but her. I remember on her season, I thought she was funny....now I'm wondering why I thought that. The "Oh, it's totally ok for me to pay someone from a foreign country to do my work for me" thing was...really super cringe to me.
I'm wondering if Jujubee is playing the long game or what? (not that the show is too long, but you know...) I love her, I don't want her to go home but I feel like it might happen soon (no, I haven't read any spoilers for today yet so IDK who goes home this week lol we watch it at 9 PM on Tuesdays).
Mo has been stunning (obligatory to use that word for her, hello) and I hope she finishes high!
The only UK girl I was really pulling for was Cheryl and now she's gone too :( (nothing against Blu, I just wasn't actively rooting for her)
I didn't watch any of the Holland seasons so I hadn't seen Janey before, but....idk. She's beautiful! But the attitude...I dunno.
And Jimbo is...well, Jimbo is Jimbo. I never know what to expect, lol.
As for S14....ok! I have ✨opinions✨I don't completely understand the "send people home the first two episodes and then bring them back" concept but whatever... I get wanting to show everyone off in smaller groups, though.
I'm not doing the greatest with my favorites! I love Alyssa, she's gone, I love Kornbread, she's out, I love Maddy, she's gone too...I hate to ask who's next, lol (also I would never ask because I hate spoilers!! Thanks to the person who replied to Maddy's Instagram post and let me know a week ahead that she would be going home, ugh.)
Willow is my absolute favorite though and I feel like she really has a good chance of winning! Angeria is amazing too and I'll support anyone from my state (well...except for Tamisha Iman last season...anyway) so I hope she keeps up the pace she's at! She's amazing.
I like Daya (more than her sister...sorry, unpopular opinion, I know) but I don't get getting upset because you asked for critique and got it??? I completely understand wanting to hear some critique if you're safe a lot, but don't be upset when you don't hear what you want to hear.
Still baffled that Lady Camden didn't win the challenge this past week because her look was gorgeous! And she sold it so well in my opinion! I like Jorgeous but I wouldn't have picked her as the winner.
I don't get why things got so...whatever between Maddy and Jasmine on Untucked, but it appeased the people who hate when the girls get along, so good for them I guess 😐
I know there's more I could talk about but my brain is fried from all that thinking, lol! We'll see how much of this is invalid after watching UK vs the World tonight...
