Preparing for a Natural Disaster With MaxLend
Tumblr media
The U.S. experiences a variety of natural disasters because of its geographical diversity. This means if you reside within the United States, you are likely to live in an area that could be impacted. When preparing for a natural disaster, there is no better time to start than now.
At MaxLend, we understand how to prepare for a natural disaster. It involves more than the foresight to know the steps you must take. Preparation also requires that you have the funding available to secure the necessary supplies. The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System has been surveying adults in America since 2013, asking about dealing with unexpected expenses. With these surveys, they found approximately 32% of those surveyed would not have the funding immediately available to cover the expense.1
If you want to know more about a natural disaster recovery plan and how MaxLend and its same-day cash installment loans can help, continue reading below.*
What State Has the Least Natural Disasters?
Determining the state with the least natural disasters can be challenging, as natural disasters can occur in different regions. However, some states are historically less prone to certain natural disasters.
For example, states in the northern parts of the United States, such as those in the Northeast, may experience fewer hurricanes than states along the Gulf Coast or Southeast. Similarly, states in the Midwest don’t experience coastal storm surges and typically only see the remnants of hurricanes. Still, they are more susceptible to tornadoes and severe winter weather.
States like Alaska and Hawaii may be less prone to certain types of disasters, such as tornadoes. Even so, they have unique risks, including earthquakes and volcanic activity.
Natural Disaster States
It’s essential to note that while some states may experience fewer natural disasters of a particular type, no state is entirely immune to natural hazards. Each region has risks, and preparedness is crucial regardless of location. Additionally, the frequency and impact of natural disasters can vary, making it vital for residents in any state to stay informed and be prepared for potential emergencies.
What Is Needed After a Natural Disaster?
When preparing for a natural disaster, regardless of the type, there are many things you will need before, during, and after the event. Of course, you need the basics – food, shelter, clothing, and clean water. You might also need money to repair your home, car, or other transportation. You may have unforeseen expenses, such as medical bills or insurance deductibles, that you didn’t realize you would need to pay. This is why you want to create a natural disaster recovery plan.
But what happens if you don’t have the money to cover the cost of these items? What options do you have? Many things may be needed as life starts to return to normal after a natural disaster. Fortunately, MaxLend offers personal installment loans online. These direct installment loans may help you pay for repairs and other unforeseen expenses that a natural disaster might have caused.
How to Prepare for a Natural Disaster
To help ensure you aren’t taken by surprise when a natural disaster is imminent, you can prepare yourself in advance. Preparing for a natural disaster is crucial to ensuring the safety and well-being of yourself and your loved ones.
Below are some general steps to prepare for a natural disaster. Following these steps will help make sure you have a natural disaster recovery plan and that you and your family will be ready.
Stay Informed
You should always be informed about potential hazards in your area, including the types of natural disasters that could occur. This includes regularly monitoring weather forecasts and warnings from local authorities.
Being prepared, aware, and informed are critical components of mitigating the impact of these events.
Create an Emergency Kit
Assemble a basic emergency supply kit that includes water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a first aid kit, medications, important documents, and other essential items. Customize the kit based on your family’s needs, including infants, elderly family members, and pets. Ensure you have an adequate supply of prescription medications, and include any necessary medical supplies and medicines in your emergency kit.
Make a Family Emergency Plan and Secure Your Home
Develop a family emergency plan that includes communication strategies, evacuation routes, and meeting points. Ensure all family members are aware of the plan and practice it regularly.
Take steps to secure your home, such as reinforcing windows and doors, securing heavy furniture, and making necessary structural improvements. Know how to turn off utilities like gas, water, and electricity.
Have an Evacuation Plan
Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and have a plan in place for where you will go in case of an evacuation order. Arrange transportation options in advance.
You may want to keep important documents (birth certificates, passports, insurance policies, etc.) in a waterproof and fireproof container. Know where these are located so that if you are evacuated, you can quickly grab them. Consider making digital copies and storing them securely online.
Practice Safety Drills
Regularly practice safety drills with your family, including evacuation procedures and other emergency actions. Remember that your steps for safety will depend on the type of natural disaster most likely to occur in your region. Always follow the guidance and recommendations of local authorities.
Financial Preparedness
You may want to keep some cash on hand, as ATMs and credit card systems may be unavailable during a disaster. Review your insurance policies to ensure they adequately cover potential damages.
But what happens if you don’t have cash in your account to withdraw? Regarding financial preparedness, MaxLend offers payday loan alternatives, and may be able to help.
Which of the Following Is Not True About Emergency Funds?
Have you been told you can borrow from retirement savings in an emergency? Or were you told that emergency funds should only be kept in a savings account? Did you hear that emergency funds should only cover job loss? The reality is that none of these statements are true. Not all retirement savings accounts allow for withdrawals, even in emergencies. Not everyone has a savings account or emergency funds available. And most importantly, covering the money you need due to a job loss isn’t the only thing that emergency funds are used for.
MaxLend knows that you might need to pay for many types of emergencies. Whether you are looking at a pet emergency fund, a house emergency fund, or a general emergency fund, it doesn’t matter if you are familiar with these if you don’t have the money to put in them. When you are faced with an emergency, you need help fast. MaxLend offers online unsecured installment loans that could be the help you need.

Another you (1)
Context: In which you get stuck on a planet and have to save kirk, whichhe admits feelings for you and ya both land in the Med Bay.
Warning: Some blood, needles, minor injuries. mild choking
Feb 2nd/21
I always find it funny that my go-to thing is to have the reader afraid of needles, but I myself am actually trained to give vaccines and take blood.
This was also my first Kirk x reader in a long time// It’s hard to write flirty confident characters because it is the exact opposite of who I am, yet it’s the personality i love in my men and women so xoxo
--------------
Tumblr media
Dr. McCoy was again trying to coerce you down to the Med Bay; he really thought offering to get the Captain involved would change anything. “I’m telling you right now, Y/N, you can’t go on your away mission without your immunizations for this planet. Have you have heard of the Quazulu VIII Virus, no? That’s because there is a vaccine for it!”
“Dr. McCoy, It will be a quick up and down to the planet to grab some specimens; I won’t stay for diplomatic reasons like the rest of the party is.” You justified to him. You had almost finished packing everything you needed from the research ward before your ship’s chief medical examiner ambushed you.
“As a scientist, I’d figure you would be one of the most appreciative of vaccines.” He replied, helping you collect tubes from the drawer beside him. “Ah contrary, as a scientist, I am well aware of how dirty hospitals and MedBays are.” The doctors face contorted,
“You do realize you are going on an away mission, on a un sterile planet. There is a risk of injury; are you just not going to receive first aid if something goes wrong on the planet?” He’s not wrong, and you knew it. You just hated needles. They grossed you out.
“I won’t get hurt then,” You confidently stated, which earned a scoff from the young doctor.
“What if I bring the vaccines to your research lab? And gave them to you here?” You admitted that wasn’t a bad compromise. The Med Bay gave you more of a bad feeling than needles do. You always found that most people you had to bring to the Medbay or hospital didn’t always come out. You just couldn’t shake the feeling of dread when you go in.
“Fine.”
“You remind me so much of Jim.” He said while pulling out the vaccines. He had the vaccines here!? He already knew I wouldn’t agree to go to the Med Bay and thought ahead. You really have left an impression on the doctor.
“Who? And you really knew I’d say yes?” Referring to the cooler filled with the vaccinations. “Ah, you see, they are not just for you,” He said. Taking one of the two doses you needed into one of his hands and pinch “Done.”
Oh, that wasn’t horrible.
The doors swooshed opened behind you, but you couldn’t open your eyes, knowing there was another needle coming. “Bones, you called me here?” Immediately recognizing that voice as Captain Kirk
“You Actually Told The Captain On Me!?” You stood up to look accusingly at Dr. McCoy. He only shrugged his shoulders, looking between the two of you. “You need to get your inoculations, Jim; why don’t you explain to Y/N here how important it is to get them before an away trip,” He said while getting another dose ready. “You do have a lot of experience of finding out the hard way.”
You met the captain’s eyes, so blue. “Captain,” You correctly addressed him, “Y/N, will you be coming tonight?” He asked, his voice so alluring.
“I will, sir,” He smiled at you, taking a seat. “So, Bones here is giving you trouble?” He grabbed your backpack, taking a glance inside at what you were going to bring. It reminded you of a kid who couldn’t sit still.
“Bones?”
“Do not call me that,” Dr. McCoy said fast. pinch “Ouch, I wasn’t ready for that one!” You growled, rubbing your arm, earning a small laugh from the captain sitting across from you. You watched Dr. McCoy draw up his last dose for you and started to feel sick to your stomach.
“Captain, I believe you were explaining to Y/N how important the vaccines are,” He asked the Captain. Funny, it’s not often that Dr. McCoy will address the Captain formally like that. You think Captain Kirk noticed as well as he looked caught off guard.
“Well, as your Captain, I have to inform you that it is mandatory, and Starfleet regulations to get your vaccines before the away mission. Otherwise, you can compromise the health of my crew,” He said professionally. Looking at bones with a thumbs up.
You couldn’t help but get distracted by his deep blue eyes while he talked more about it. You were not really paying much attention to his words. “All done,” Dr. McCoy said, cleaning up his tray of discarded utensils. You were so distracted by the captain you didn’t feel that last pinch.
You pulled your blue shirt back down to entirely go over your arm, “Well, if that is everything, I should be preparing for the away mission,” The captain said, dismissing himself.
“No, No, No, Jim.” Dr. McCoy stood up fast, grabbing the Captain by his arm before he could get out of his chair. “You just lectured Y/N on the importance of inoculations; I do believe it is your turn,” You figured that was why the doctor brought those extra doses. This was his plan all along.
“For the well being of the crew and all,” You spoke up, paraphrasing his own words. Dr. McCoy let out an agreeable laugh, while the captain just sat there, defeated.
“Alright, alright, just make it fast,” The captain lifted his shirt enough to sneak his left arm out. Your first instinct, of course, was to look around the room at literally anything else.
“I was just telling Y/N how alike you both are; I mean, she’s basically another you,” Dr. McCoy said. You couldn’t help but scoff at this, you and the captain having something in common? Sure, but you being basically like him? Definitely not.
“What gave it away? Was it the height? We are pretty close in height,” The captain responded, a playful smile on his handsome face.
“Maybe, It is our common interest in specialties on the ship? You know, being captain and being a biomedical engineer are very similar jobs.” You asked, teasing the doctor. He only responded with a sigh and poked the Captain with the needle, making him jolt.
“You know Y/N; I think he might be right. I am certain he was referring to our matching taste in clothing.” The Starfleet uniform being all match except for the colours. Where scientists wore grey or blue, the captains wore gold. Gold was definitely his colour.
“Nope, he is definitely talking about our boobs; they are just so alike,” You said, a giggle ripped from the captain, making him move back slightly.
“Dammit, Jim, stay still.” He said, giving the last dose to the Captain, then turning back to look at you, “You know you’re both just proving my point,”
“Well, then that’s just double the fun for you, Bones,” The captain said. He was taking his leave before the Doctor comes up with more to poke him with. After two years on this ship, bugging Dr. McCoy never got old.
“I couldn’t imagine being stuck on an away trip with the two of you,” Dr. McCoy said while grabbing his bag. “Hey, Bones, that’s kinda hurtful,” You responded, using the nickname the Captain used with him.
“Dammit, Jim,” Bones muttered under his breath, leaving to go track down more officers before the away trip.
-----
The trip mission for you was supposed to be simple: collect some plant samples with specific regenerative properties. This would help in your designs of tissue regeneration equipment you worked on in the lab aboard the enterprise with Dr. McCoy.
Unfortunately for you, It seemed something went wrong, you’re assuming with the diplomatic party that came down with you. You only took fifth-teen minutes to gather enough samples to fill your small bag, but when you used your comm to contact the ship, no one responded.
As a matter-of-fact, no one on the mission on the planet was answering either. You hoped they hadn’t forgotten you on this planet and left, unlikely, but still a thought. You didn’t remember where exactly the other group got transported to, and it was still a debate whether you should leave the last known location they had of you, but it was getting dark.
You needed shelter and possibly a fire. It was far too cold on this planet for you to stay extended out in the elements. So you started walking, with no means to defend yourself and no map of the jungle-like terrain. You couldn’t help but think bones may have been right about laughing at you confidently declaring nothing will go wrong.
“Y/N to enterprise,” You repeated every few seconds, waiting for any response as you trudged through the thicker bushes. Soon it was dark and cold. You could barely see anything, and it was getting too dangerous to walk around.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw the faintest light. Maybe it was your crew? You thought about following it, but you also thought of that fish that used a light on its head to lure its prey back on earth. Maybe you are about to be angler fish food; You don’t think they make vaccines to prevent that.
Maybe it is called “not being stupid and walking toward the scary lingering light.”
But where else was there to go. So, against your better instinct, you started walking towards it. Although, the closer you got, you figured out it was a fire and not some carnivorous fish. Picking up the speed and getting closer, you could clearly hear voices. Thank goodness
You have always been told you had two left feet for a reason, so of course, before you could enter the camp, you tripped and ate dirt. Getting up on your knees, you backed up slowly. You seemed to have cut your arm open on something, possibly a branch, when you fell. Great, now you’d have to admit to bones he was right.
Captain Kirk and the rest of the diplomatic crew were tied up, surrounded by another species. It seemed someone- a woman was attempting to speak to them in their language.
They didn’t seem to be responding to her in the same kind tone. Every so often, she’d stop and talk to the captain, translating for him, you figured. Maybe some sort of negotiations or clearing up a misunderstanding, but it did not seem to be going in our favor.
You lowered yourself deeper in the bushes and looked around the camp. There didn’t seem to be any device blocking the signal you could spot, so why wouldn’t the comms work, you wondered. You did, however, find Starfleet-issued phasers, more phasers than you had men. You suppose this meant you guys were not the only Starfleet officers caught by this group.
You watched as the conversation turned sour, and one of the species took what looked like a long fork and put it through the captain’s leg. Yup, This is definitely not good. The same one who stabbed the captain untied the translator and the two other men, walking them out into the forest in the other direction, to where you had no idea. This left Captain Kirk alone, guarded by two others.
You ever so slowly made your way around the camp to the phasers, laying on a flat table with other confiscated items. Your arm was not letting up pain-wise or blood wise, but you knew it wouldn’t matter much if you couldn’t make it off the planet. Grabbing one phaser at a time, you managed four.
Although taking a look at them, you realized you were way in way over your head. Too far in over your head. Getting stranded on a planet with a lacerated arm was fine; watching your crewmates get tied up and minorly stabbed was fine because you could have helped. There was a solution in sight, but now?
Looking down at the phaser, you had no recognition on how to use it; you were now too far in over your head. Starfleet trained you on a basic low power phaser; the highest setting was three. This phaser had so many buttons, far too many than necessary, you thought.
Taking a deep breath, you put two phasers in your bag and slowly made your way behind to where Captain Kirk was tied up and bleeding. Waiting for the perfect opportunity to untie the Captain, you watched the two guards pace around the camp, talking. You needed a distraction, but what could you possibly do?
You snuck up to the Captain silently, but you knew there wasn’t enough time to do too much before they’d glance in your direction. Grabbing the Captain on the shoulder reassuringly, “Don’t make a sound,” The last thing you wanted was for him to be surprised by you sneaking upon him and startle the guards. “I have no idea how to use this, so I really hope you can move and are not completely out of it from blood loss!” You whispered urgently, putting a phaser in his still tied up hands.
“Y/N?” The captain whispered, “Don’t do anything stupid,” You loved his esteemed confidence in you.
“I don’t have enough time to finish untying this knot,” It was so close to coming undone, but you heard one of the guards pacing this way, so you left. You watched the captain look around, but you were hiding in the bushes already. He started to loosen his hands subtly.
Now time for your distraction. You walked around the campsite again, furthering yourself from the captain. “Hey!” You screamed at the guards, hopefully taking the guard’s attention of the captain. “Hey!” You shouted again at them, waving your arms in the air with one phaser in your hand. The guards started slowly approaching you; however, you hadn’t really thought this far.
“Okay, I know you can’t understand me,” You pointed the phaser directly at them, “But I know you understand this, and I...I don’t want to hurt you! So don’t come any farther!” You yelled pointlessly as they kept on approaching you, towering over you. Up close, in front of the light from their fire, you could clearly see their leathery skin, their large muscular frames, and very large weapons in hand.
“Hey, I mean it!” You said, waving the phaser at the one to your left. They were approaching faster with no sign of stopping until they were in front of you. One put their hands on your throat, your feet dangling in the air as he started to choke you. You knew they could crush your throat in a second if they chose to but instead decided to apply pressure slowly.
A loud sound echoed in your ears; It definitely belonged to a phaser. The guard let you go, both of you falling to the ground. And you couldn’t stop the intense coughing fit that erupted from you, your body trying to get as much air in as it could. Distantly you heard the second guard fall to the ground. A hand was on your back as you coughed, “Are you okay?” It was the captain.
After catching your breath, you stood up, looking at the captain. He was standing beside you, phaser in hand, with blood rushing down his leg. “You’re the one with the stab wound,” You responded hoarsely, slightly concerned. “This is nothing,” You reached under his arm so he could support his weight more onto you, “Let me help, sit down over here and let’s tie something around your leg,” He let his weight fall on you slightly. To be honest, you probably would not be able to carry all his weight, especially since your arm was starting to throb.
Sitting him down, you reached into your bag, looking for anything you could use as a makeshift tourniquet. Thankfully, you packed a mini first aid kit. Yes, it was extremely small, holding only a few items; you knew it had a small roll of gauze in it. He let out a laugh when he saw you pull out the little red box. “Laugh all you want, but this could potentially help save your life,” You said seriously.
“That’s not why I am laughing,” You looked up at him curiously, waiting for him to continue his explanation. “I’m sorry, but.” You wrapped a long strand of gauze around his leg, pulling and twisting, as you were taught. “I have this deep, stab wound, and you pull out the smallest first aid kit that I have ever seen in my life,” You took an alcohol swab and wiped his wound gently, cleaning it as well as you could.
“I find it extremely funny that when I looked into your bag this morning and saw it, I thought it was cute, you would bring it,” You looked around to see what dressing you had, not a lot. “I thought it was cute you’d bring a small little first aid kit when we have an on-hand medic come with us.” You ripped his pants just slightly so you start dressing it, “And now you are providing first aid to me with it, in the field, I don’t know I just find that funny” He finished looking down at what you were doing before deciding maybe watching isn’t the best idea.
“I don’t know if I should pack dressing around… this fork thing, or if I should take out the object and dress you properly.” You leaned back on your legs and looked up at him.
“Leaving it in would be safest because I can’t be sure if it hit an artery or not, and you’d bleed out.” You paused, letting him take in the information, “On the other side if I don’t take it out and we have to move fast, it could potentially do more damage.”
“Take it out; we need to get moving to find Uhura, Sulu, and Montgomery.” You were slightly nervous about doing this; killing your captain does not look good on a resume. You opened the dressing packages, ready to work fast. The tourniquet should have stopped any bleeding; you should be safe to pull it, you hoped.
And with one fluid motion and no warning for the Captain, you pulled it out, throwing it to the ground. You placed one hand on the wound to keep pressure and reached for the dressings. The groans of pain were agonizing to hear come from him; however, you knew you had to keep going and get the wound bandaged up. You had wished the small kit had medication or pain relievers of any kind to help him, something you’d need to remind yourself to add for next time.
“I am so sorry; I know that must have been pretty painful for you.” You said sincerely. It was over, but he was still breathing hard, reeling over the pain. He reached toward you, leaning forward, and rested his head on your shoulder. You put a hand on his head and brushed his hair with your fingers, staying like that for a few minutes, peacefully.
“Your arm, there is blood on the sleeve,” He said, grabbing your arm to inspect it; however, you pulled it away, “I scratched it on a branch, it hurts but it’s not bleeding anymore. Besides, I used all the dressing on you- being the more urgent injury.”
“We need to move; they might have heard me.” You helped him stand, and he continued to use you for support. “It’s so dark. I have no idea how or where we’d find everyone.” He reached into his pocket and grabbed a phaser, “They went to their nest. It should be north; there is a map of the terrain on the phaser we can follow,” And with that, he pressed a button of the phaser, which also turned on a flashlight. “Captain, do you think you are in any shape to fight? I was surprised you were able to stand up long enough to take down those two guards.”
“I am fine. I can fight, don’t worry about me.”
“Which, by the way, thank you for saving me back there,” You had never been that close to dying before. “Y/N, it is me who should be thanking you. Without you, I am fairly sure I would have bled to death tied up at that camp.”

If Africa come up with their own bullet train like with SA then they can make a 2 way rail not 1 as seen in many nations to reach the cost lands like west Africa, North Africa like morocco to connect using yacht to Europe Spain to deliver the above explained parcels as with Eritrea though not fast as air but another reduced price delivery like 4 home appliances as much as office or just gadgets like furniture, clothes or office where or people. Even with Caribbean isles with South America and the ship the same goods to like North America huge population nations like Mexico or USA cause those islands are in the middle creating another new frontier of employment 4 those who can take long to afford instant air-tickets. Africans as well can in place of the rail above make their own wide super highways to facilitate the above from coast to coast once they have known the technology.
In USA shelters or nursing homes they even target small gadgets like nail cutters or combination padlocks, bandage, Colgate, soaps, shampoo, perfumes and bring them to Africa like explained above, even with health gadgets they open and create a hitch in their, which the hospital declare unfit, they take it and bring it to Africa still as much as with much drugs and medicines in nursing homes and those hospitals which got a nursing home. Transportation cost nothing cause its Electric yacht or drone as much as airplane so they dont give a hoot.

Now if policeman sees 1 with cash in ya midst they say u r partaking bang as them also hope to benefit as u want to benefit from him, using women as prostitutes to get that cash from u, marshal up the cash allover Kenya and put something on road like a matatu even with a business u give ya woman, put some side to give the group to go on. Be watchful 4 such women as they champion continuity of bad traits in the community, the lazy still do and u wonder why if u dont know the above. Some twilight organizations give u the woman u want to fuck see from website as they take 10% of it to ensure they lady safety, in-fact they send the woman to ya doorstep not as previous only in hotels

If ya money stolen or u killed, ambushed or kidnapped is the bank staff wanting to take ya cash and if u had written a will 4 ya money to be given like $ 1 to every bank client then they got to obey that so they dont benefit from ya cash if the manage to do the above. The problem will solve it self as uncle Nellies of the south tells no point 4 empty romantic illusions like philosophical sayings which have only made such people be killed and the above technology can be used in passport centers, point of entries of countries in voting centers, schools, jobs etc 4 identification.
E-speed boat as well can be of help to Somali to get goods and people to the other side via the Indian or red sea cause its not that wide to Yemen or Oman and if those nations have built good infrastructures like rail system and road then getting to UAE or Kuwait after connecting with road or rail from speed boat aint an issue.
They even get plates parts which are broken from houses and take them to like the nursing homes and shelters to be counted as broken as new one replenished while the not broken 1 but hidden shipped to African markets like explained below but lucky enough Africans have learnt to make such as plates where u take broken part place in dough 30% weight of the plate- u measure it with ya weighing machine- then in the dark hurl cold water unto it and boom its formed.
Unless God speaks again is when we can authenticate the bible truth and doctrines, if not they were written but 1 thing cements the truth to tell u God exists like at night u hear hell door being shut up with a voice and those who have died if u partake -mwarubaine- u see them in hell or on bench waiting or free. Goat and ship parable to bring the above reality

Why Political & Media Pre-Occupation with the Stock Market? Is it Essential to Capialism’s “Unending Growth” Ponzi Scheme? A Scheme that allows the Rich and Infuential to control Society?
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/sageworks/2012/10/01/private-companies-pull-economy-along/amp/
For millenia before there was Capitalism (established circa 1700s) the world mangaged with privately owned businesses. New and old markets. People needed food, shelter, clothing, transportation and all was available without a Stock Market.
Without Capitalism: Taxes were collected. Armies and Navies raised . There was overbuilding and there was inflation. Venice ran a massive shipyard that could turn out a ship to spec in a day. Roads and canals were built. Scientific and medical discoveries were made? The dole existed for those out of work or displaced from the land.
What did Capitalism add that improved the nature of human society? What does Wall Street or any Stock Market do to improve Society?
There were Mercantile Banks long before Capitalism and the Stock Markets. Bond Markets today provide loans with interest to finance new ventures. As do Banks. Silent Partners then and now provide finance.
The stock market is legally sanctioned Ponzi Scheme called “Investment” or “Speculation”.
The Scheme begins when a Publically Traded Company issues stock in an auction that the Original Speculators bid in. The OS holds the stock hoping that future Speculators will hallucinate that the stock has “increased in value” and can be sold for that increased value. A hallucination usually based on how well the company subsequently performs or how well the deluded believe the stock market is performing overall.
However, unlike a dividend, or bond, or part ownwership, or bank loan, there is little or no real economic or commercial relationship between the Stock issued and the performance of a Publically Traded Company.
Most Publically Traded Companies do not pay dividends. They have absolutely no obligation to repay the Orginal stock price “investment” nor the alleged increase in stock value.
Of course, as with any Ponzi scheme, the Stock Market “growth” is dependent on new bettors. When those run out, the market “crashes” due to “economic forces”. Professors from elite Ivy League Universities will perform a ritual over the debacle. A few scapegoats will be “discovered”. Even more arcane rules to “protect” the investor will percolate out of Congress
These Publically Traded companies sit at the top of the economic food chain. They use their economies of size to dominate their sector and reduce competition. Reduced competition allows them to force down the prices they pay suppliers which are the 99% of privately owned companies. Forcing down supplier prices forces the private companies to in turn keep worker wages flat.
Limited “competition” allows the Publically Traded Companies to force their own worker’s wages flat.
At the same time limited competition allows them to constantly inflate the values of products like insulin.
The uncompetitive price fixing rising inflation coupled with flat wages and driven down suppliers costs give the CEOs, Boards of Directors, and Stock Brokers the stolen income for the phantasmagorical “bonuses” that create the Super Rich.
More accurately the phantasmagorical Speculative artificial value of stocks that creates the illusion of billionaire wealth. The stolen income maintains the illusion that the most of “Wealth” results from entrepreneurial skill or wise investing. As opposed to private companies where wealth results real world sales and profits.
Who owns most of the Stock of these Predatory Public Companies poisoning the earth, corrupting politics, and robbing us blind?
WE DO!
Duuuuuhhhh! Rule #1 of Wealth: “Always use other people’s money.”
We, the General Public own or a paid for most of the Stock. We may never personally purchase a share but our Bank deposits, private and Public employees retirement programs, Insurance money, have all been wrapped up in “Institutional Investments”. The Institutions own 80% of the US stock.
We the General Public assured we are “investing “have watched as our wages have been utilized to create the 1% of companies that have one third of all the employees.
We didn’t get dividends for our “investment”. Did we get anything for stocks in which we invested? What would we have got if we’d gone with Bonds?
What we did was hand the Exploiters a method to create Predatory Companies able to dominate their sectors. Handed the money to predators without having to prove they can run a profitable company in a competitive sector.
Yes, our present and futures are tied up in a Ponzi Scheme that WILL CRASH. Again and again. When it did in 2008, one-third of the value of my and your pension evaporated into thin air...well it was always an hallucination, a mirage. It never existed. Wasn’t stolen. Can’t steal an illusion.
Who runs the Ponzi Scheme? The Super Rich and influential.
Who runs the Institutional Investors? Ivy League educated Children of the Super Rich and Influential
Who runs the Publically Traded Corporations? The Super Rich and Influential.
Who attends the yearly stockholder meetings? The Super Rich and Influential running the Corporations and the children of the Rich and Influential running the Institutions.
Who owns the controlling interest in ALL the Publically Traded Corporations. WE DO!
We. Just. Need. To. Wake. Up.
Has any politician ever suggested we just all vote our stocks? Use our overwhelming leverage?. Move all our money to Bonds and to Credit Unions? Bring back anti-trust?
Any politician?
That would make us, the 99.99% just too powerful. Disrupt the existing order.
Without this twisted economic nightmare, we could feed everyone and live in harmony with nature. Plan for growth. Not lose our homes and jobs because of a “crash” due to “economic factors”. Lose our lives to the artificial prices of drugs.
Instead we have have an imperative for continual job growth even though we dont have the trained workers. Perpetual economic growth until the the ‘bacteria suffocate in the Petrie dish’. Because the Stock Market has to continually rise and rise and rise. Oops, crash. Then rise and rise and rise. Oops...
In the meantime, we have three times the empty housing units as homeless; we throw away enough unspoiled food to feed all the hungry at home and abroad. If we can feed, house, educate, and care for all - why must we “lead lives of quiet desperation”?
Because we have given the Super Rich and Infuential the keys to control the Economy.

This Year and Beyond- My Year in AmeriCorps NCCC
Tumblr media
I will get things done for America.
To make our people safer, smarter, and healthier.
I will bring Americans together to strengthen communities.
Faced with apathy, I will take action.
Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground.
Faced with adversity, I will persevere.
I will carry this commitment with me, this year and beyond.
I am an AmeriCorps Member, and I will GET THINGS DONE!
-The AmeriCorps Pledge
My name is Ross.
I’m a 25 year old Registered Nurse, EMT-B, and Wilderness and Remote First Aid Instructor from northeast Ohio. On January 9th, 2018, approximately 316 days ago, I left my family, my apartment, my job, and very close to all my personal belongings to fly 602 miles to a small town I’d never heard of, with people I’d never met, to do work I didn’t choose, manage people who didn’t like to be managed, learn and grow more than I ever thought possible, make friends I’ll never forget, and become the person I’d always seen myself becoming.
I want to underline the hubris with which I embarked on this journey.
I graduated nursing school less than 2 years prior to entering the program. While there and in my first year as a nurse, I transitioned from female to male, was an RA for 2 years, survived a 3-year abusive relationship and 4 horror-story level roommates, and struggled with picking, hair pulling, compulsive lying, and generalized anxiety.
I thought, nothing could be more difficult than what I’d just gone through. This was going to be a break. I’d go, develop my leadership skill, meet some cool people, serve my country, and come back ready to tackle whatever came next.
Heh. Heheh... it didn’t exactly go like that.
First, some background. If you’ve never been in the AmeriCorps NCCC world before, it’s a pretty foreign place. You hear about military life a lot as part of popular culture, and Peace Corps is at least a household name. But I’d be willing to bet that unless you know someone who’s served, you probably don’t know much about (or possibly haven’t even heard of) the National Civilian Community Corps...
(Note- this is a really long post, something like 5,000 words. But its also pretty cool if you’ve got the time, or are interested in AmeriCorps NCCC. Also, there’s definitely some triggery stuff in here, so you may want to skip it if mental health, suicide mention, and anything along those lines doesn’t sit well with you.)
To avoid some confusion, AmeriCorps and NCCC are not synonymous- AmeriCorps is a larger organization that oversees several different civilian national service programs, including Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), State and National (which is itself many, many programs), and the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC, pronounced N-Triple-C).
NCCC is the program I was in. I don’t have proof of this, but having lived it, NCCC is likely one of the most intense domestic national service experiences one can have. It’s often billed as a “team based, residential national service program for young people aged 18-24.” And it is, but that doesn’t really capture the intensity of the experience.
For one thing, when they say the service is “team based” they mean it- Not only do Members work 40+-hour weeks together, but they truly act as a team- you live (sometimes all in the same room) with the team, train with them, eat with them, work out with them, have mandatory meetings, reflections, and team building activities, participate in 1:1 meetings, grocery and other shopping trips, and share one 15-passenger van for all transportation needs.
You live in a residence hall while on campus, but while away on project (called “SPIKE”), housing could be anything- cots in an office building or church basement, a cabin at a summer camp, the classroom floor of a Boys and Girls Club or YMCA, a school gym, a local college residence hall, the semi-completed portion of a house you’re actively building, or basically anywhere vaguely flat and dry enough to put a mat and sleeping bag.
Personal belongings- or, more accurately, space for personal belongings, is also at a premium. For SPIKE, you get a “red bag” with enough space for uniforms, underwear, a couple of sets of personal clothing, toiletries, and your personal protective equipment. You also get your sleeping bag/bedding bag (a space life saver, you can stuff any small belongings that didn’t make it into your red bag in here), and a personal backpack. You’re given a military style duffle (your “green bag”) to store out of season clothing, bedding, and other personal belongings on campus while you’re away. But that’s it. You learn to say no to free stuff pretty quickly.
There’s also TONS of rules, most of which are related to safety or reputation. We like to say “Someone did something stupid 5 years ago, and now we have to wear hard hats while gardening.” It’s funny, but its so close to true, it hurts. In context, it makes sense- NCCC is a government organization, and when you join, the government assumes total responsibility for your wellbeing. They pay for your food, your medical care, your housing, and your transportation.
In return, you do anything that might pose a risk to any of the above on their terms- even if you would never wear safety goggles while painting or make a passenger get out and ground guide you into a parking space at home, you do here, because they’d have to pay for it if you got paint in your eye or ran into a pole, and they reeeeeally don’t want to. NCCC, being a government-funded service organization, also can’t afford to do anything that could jeopardize their funding situation or reputation- so if you’re wearing “the A” (uniform items that have the AmeriCorps logo on them), swearing, drinking, jaywalking, and really any other unwholesome activities are expressly forbidden.
On the more logistical end of things, the 10-11 month “service year” is split into training (a month of team leader training (TLT) and a month of combined corps member and team leader training (Corps Training Institute, or CTI)), and 4 distinct, 6-8 week “Rounds” of (1-2) projects with week-long prep/training segments in between. There’s a week-long midyear break and a long weekend at some other point where you can go home or chill on personal expense, and 3 personal days that can be taken throughout. Otherwise, you’re either on SPIKE working, or at campus training.
Projects can be a lot of different things. Most common projects at my campus were working with environmental groups removing invasive species and building/maintaining trails, working with neighborhood revitalization organizations and police departments improving the look and condition of neighborhood buildings and empty lots, providing supplemental staff at non-profit summer camps, Boys and Girls Clubs, and YMCAs, and building houses for low-income families. Other projects might include tutoring children, general maintenance at non-profit or government facilities, building or maintaining parks or schools, entering data, conducting surveys, mucking and gutting disaster-affected homes, staffing shelters, creating lesson plans, piloting community events, and other tasks organizations need completed, but don’t have the reliable manpower to do themselves.
Before each project, you research the area and work and present a “briefing” to your unit leader, assistant program director, and unit support team leader (team leaders who live and work on campus supporting staff and teams in the field, and who act as a reservoir if field team leaders drop or need to go on extended medical or other leave). When you return from a project, you prepare and present a “debrief” and “portfolio” documenting your work and its impact. The briefings and debriefs take about a half hour each, and portfolios are 12-25 page papers on your project work, which will be used to justify the continued presence of the NCCC.
But just the work is not enough- each corps member has one or more “rep roles” or jobs that support the campus or team. “Official” rep roles include the Project Outreach Liaison (present to and try to get organizations to apply for NCCC teams), Recruiter (present to and try to get people to apply to be members and team leaders), Service Learning Initiator (responsible for facilitating team reflections and secure learning opportunities for the team), Media Rep (coordinates media coverage, writes press releases and articles about projects, creates social media posts), and Yearbook Rep (who creates a yearbook page and/or team video for each Round). “Team” Roles include Assistant Team Leader, PT Coordinator (organizes workout times, places, and activities), Food Point of Contact (creates shopping list, manages food inventory and budget), Cleaning Point of Contact (makes sure housing is ready for weekly inspection), and Team Builder (puts together activities and outings for recreation and team building/bonding).
The program is set up to be an immersive and intense experience. Teams of between 6 and 14 members travel throughout one of 4 assigned regions (Southern, North Central, Southwest, and Pacific) for SPIKE projects. They are led by a team leader, who mentors members, coordinates work assignments and tasks at the job site, does paperwork, responds to emergencies, and pretty much just makes sure all required things get done. Teams are organized into units, which have between 8 and 12 teams. Team leaders report to unit leaders, who remain on campus for the majority of the year.
Okay, so that was maybe a lot of background. But I think it is important to provide that information- unless you read the blogs or know someone, there’s not a ton of depth officially available as to what to expect.
But here’s my reflection on the year-
It started in Team Leader Training. I remember arriving with a lot of expectations. I’d come for the purpose of honing my leadership skills, getting some experience in disaster work (NCCC teams can be pulled off projects to respond to declared emergencies), and taking some time away from being a nurse before I settled down into my forever life. I’d read all the blogs and news articles, corresponded with a unit leader, and talked to people online. I felt I knew everything there was to know about NCCC despite never having met someone in it. I felt so ready.
Team Leader Training was amazing. It was everything I could have ever wanted. I was learning how to do a job I’d fantasized about since I was 17- how to manage members, work with site supervisors and sponsors, coordinate team roles, do necessary paperwork, mediate conflict, drive a 15p van, foster team bonding, balance a budget, etc… It was some of the coolest training I’d ever done. We got up at 5:30 for PT, trained until 5PM, and did homework and hung out in the evenings. By the third and fourth weeks, especially during our training “mini-SPIKE,” tensions among the TLs rose somewhat, but looking back, it wasn’t anything horrible. We were all pretty competent and like-minded people, doing something we loved and creating a network of support that would carry us through the year. I’d never been more comfortable with a group of people in my life. We didn’t get a ton of time off, but it was interesting enough and important enough that we didn’t care.
Then, February 13th, everything changed. Suddenly, where there had been 32 TLs learning to interact with each other, now there were 31 TLs (one went home) and 190 Corps Members. The place was swarming, and each TL was in charge of 8 or 9 CMs they had to mold into something they barely understood themselves. I remember totally flopping on my first meeting with my CMs. I already felt like I was drowning.
We now got up at 5:15 for PT, had “Muster” (morning meeting) at 6:45, trained and conducted trainings/meetings until 5, had team dinners, team meetings, and then were up until 9 or 10 at night submitting daily behavior logs for each member, preparing other paperwork, and preparing for the next day. It was utter and complete chaos. If yours was the team on duty that night, you probably didn’t get to sleep until 1 or 2 in the morning.
Then, suddenly, it was March 9th- departure day. My team, Cedar 2, drove a mere 2 hours to Wapello, IA, but it might as well have been to a foreign country. My campus-based support of other team leaders and staff was suddenly pulled out from under me. My Unit Leader was available by phone, but I struggled hard to find the time to talk to her. The team took the transition to SPIKE life hard, pushing back on the norms and expectations- PT, food shopping, team dinners, team meetings, etc…- as much as possible, making sure I knew how stupid every decision I made and action I took was. I kept it up the best I could, but I quickly became tired and depressed. Every day was a struggle to get people to follow rules, to get them to come to dinner and do their work. They complained, loudly, about everything, said extremely mean things to my face and behind my back.
I remember after a long day of of some pretty scathing 1:1s, sitting in the middle of a field away from my team and sobbing to my mom on the phone and begging her to give me some reason to stay in the program. I was sick with a stomach bug for over a week, and my CMs called me a hypocrite and a lier for taking a few hours out of the day to go to an urgent care. I felt for sure I wouldn’t be able to make it through the year. I began thinking of hurting myself. I contacted an old counselor to see if she did phone sessions. She didn’t, and I didn’t know where else to turn. I thought, hey, If I got caught, maybe I would get kicked out. The idea seemed almost nice.
We started the year with a “split round” project, meaning we spent 3 weeks in Wapello, IA doing trail work, and then 4 weeks in West Branch, MI doing construction at a summer camp. In between, Cedar 2 spent 3 days back on campus, which helped reset the team. We had many meetings with our unit leader, remade our team charter, and came up with a lot of plans to improve our dynamic. I felt like maybe things were looking up, that maybe Wapello would just be that dark time we would look back on and then never speak of again.
When we got to West Branch, things were better, but not good by any stretch. The team had lost a member and had turned somewhat on each other, forming 2 cliques. There was bullying against one of the members that I noticed and felt horrible about, but also powerless to stop. I went almost 2 weeks without more than an hour or two of sleep a night during this project, and my only contact with the outside world was a landline telephone in the (public) camp office and 1 bar of service if I walked to the edge of the parking lot. We had WiFi the first few days, but only rarely after that. We got snowed in for weeks. I got cussed out and screamed at by a CM when I asked him to put on safety glasses while operating a tile saw (I did successfully maintain calm and talk him down, which was a particularly shining moment during this time). I had problems with CMs not doing work that I didn’t know how to address without it becoming a much bigger problem.
I was still kind of a wreck, but I had figured out at least one thing I wanted to do- recruiting for nurses in the US Public Health Service was starting in May, and I couldn’t wait to start that process. By the time I graduated from NCCC in November, I could have a position with them.
It was an interesting project though, and due to our reset, we now did everything exactly by the rules. 3 PTs a week, 3 official team dinners with someone cooking 5 days a week, everyone wore their PPE or suffered the consequences, participated(ish) in team meetings, turned in their weekly reports, and we left with glowing reviews from the sponsor and site supervisor. Attitudes were still objectively bad, they might have hated it, they might have grumbled, but it was an expectation now, and they did it without being overly hellish towards me.
During this project, we also gained a new member who was very competent, polite, but who I couldn’t really read. He’d come from a sister program of NCCC called FEMA Corps (similar in structure to NCCC, but the only projects they do are through the Federal Emergency Management Agency) after failing a background check. I was a little concerned about his integrating into the team, but he seemed okay, and would talk to me at the job site when I talked to him, and actively tried to boost team morale, which was more than anyone else did and something I greatly appreciated.
We went back to Vinton for “1st transition” (the week of training between first and second rounds), presented our debriefs and portfolios, and prepared our briefing. It was the first time I’d seen “Team Green” (the NCCC name for the team leaders collectively in reference to our uniform shirts being green instead of the grey CM shirts) since the end of CTI. Some TLs had had a blast on their first rounds, while others, like me, looked positively gaunt. You could absolutely tell who’d been through hell their first round, and who, like me, hadn’t been able to communicate that until now. We swapped horror stories while training for our next projects, and I finally felt some hope for making it through the year.
The USPHS had unfortunately decided not to open recruiting for nurses after all, but I’d come up with another plan for LAA (Life After AmeriCorps)- I was going to graduate school instead. I had a plan to start applying early in our next round.
Our next SPIKE was a 7-week project in Yankton, SD doing a particularly extensive number of projects. We worked at a Boys and Girls Club, cleaned and packaged artifacts at a museum for a move to a new facility, painted a residence hall and did interior demolition on some bathrooms at a local college, and taught archery classes to children. I felt like a soccer mom, shuttling my CMs from project to project, and trying to spend at least a couple of hours at each site each day. I still dreaded 1:1 days and had to deal with some members’ poor life choices now that they were in a town, but the sun was out, the days were warmer, and due to the nature of the project, everyone was getting quality time away from each other. Thank heavens.
Despite this, I was personally still having some issues. I spent a lot of time hiding from my team after work. It was the only way I could see myself getting through the 7 weeks until midyear. I went for long walks and admired the architecture, hid with my computer watching TV, and leading DnD type medical adventures on Discord. Cedar 2 totally avoided our problems and it was exactly what needed to happen to get us through the round. Nothing got resolved, but people did what they were supposed to do, got great work experience, and no one got (seriously) hurt.
And I got accepted into a program at Kent State for Environmental Health Science! Woot!
And something else was on the horizon. We would return to campus for half of a transition, then enjoy midyear break, then return to… A brand new team! Staff had told us at the beginning of the year that there would be a midyear team switch, but hadn’t told us exactly what that would look like. But finally it had been confirmed. Everyone’s team would be shuffled, and new teams created, with no TL getting any of their former members on their new teams. I was extremely hopeful the next team would be better than the last, and I’d get to use what I’d learned from the first 6 months I’d endured.
The Cedar unit was also disbanding, and Cedar 2 would be absorbed into the Oak unit. When I returned, I would become the TL for the brand new Oak 11.
And holy crap, Oak 11 was awesome. Unique people who said good morning and cleaned up their mess, sat and talked after dinner, wanted to cook for the team (and were great cooks), planned great outings, participated in team meetings and team builders, and were pretty consistent about their work ethic and dedication to the team. Everything wasn’t perfect, but it was so much better than it had been on Cedar 2, and I was thrilled- it wasn’t all me that had screwed it up after all. I’d gotten a team who just brought out the worst in itself.
But I found, to my dismay, that even though the team was great and our project (Erie, PA doing neighborhood revitalization work) and housing and location were all awesome, I was still having problems. Thoughts of self harm were coming back and I was even sliding somewhat into suicidal thinking with graphic intrusive thoughts. I knew the team was working hard and doing what needed done, but I constantly mistrusted them. I would misinterpret situations and respond inappropriately to them, which significantly hindered my ability to lead the team. I leaned heavily on exact execution of the many, many rules of NCCC, but had no energy to enforce them and therefore just felt terrible about my abilities as a leader. I felt I was useless and not at all what the team or anyone deserved to have to deal with. My new unit leader was great, but he wasn’t the touchy feely type and I didn’t think I could get much support from him.
I tried again to contact my counselor, and she agreed to start seeing me over the phone. It was nice to have someone to talk to, even if that meant I had to pace in a public park while talking about very personal things in order to have some privacy from my new CMs, but it also didn’t help a lot. I would hash out the same situations over and over, and my counselor would point out my reactions were exaggerated, and I was convinced she just didn’t understand how intense the program was. After a few sessions, we talked about me quitting the program to get some more intensive help, and about me going on medication. And, if I was going to stay in the program, I had to start checking in with a friend every day, and my mom three times a week.
At this point, I wanted to stay in the program more than anything, and I didn’t want to feel like I was giving up. I had been very against medication from the first time I’d started seeing a counselor 6 years prior, but I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to make it through the last 3 months in the program if nothing changed, and I’d rather do something of my own volition than end up hurt or fired. I ended up taking 2 personal days- the first 2 I’d taken all year- to travel home to Cleveland and see a doctor about the mental health issues and a chance of getting a hysterectomy when I got home in November.
I ended up going on medication. The transition onto it was a little rough, but fortunately I was going into fall break (a long weekend) and then a transition week, and by the time we were on project again (Willow River, MN, doing maintenance at an environmental education center), I felt a lot better. Suddenly, I was functional again. I could lead a team and do what needed done. I still had some issues, but for the first time I was completely confident I would make it to graduation. My CMs noticed the change. I’d decided not to tell them about the mental health stuff in anything but extremely vague terms, or about going on medication, but it made me happy to hear other people noticed how much better I felt, and how much more I could do now that I could trust my perceptions of situations and didn’t feel like crap all the time.
The team went through a couple of hard weeks in the latter half of the project- including one day when every single person on the team asked to take a mental health day on the same day (mental health days are expressly not allowed in the Corps, but you can get around this with creative paperwork). Instead of doing PT that morning, we sat in the living room and talked out some things. It didn’t resolve much, but it did help people feel that they weren’t the only ones having problems. Only one person ended up staying back from work that day, and I looked at it as proof I was getting better- I had looked at a situation and instead of following the rules to the letter, I had bent them in a way that was absolutely helpful to the team.
The project felt like it was at once the fastest and the slowest project we’d done. We drove back to campus with a feeling of finality. This was it. We weren’t prepping for another project. Once we finished these last two weeks, we were going home for real.
A lot of my CMs struggled with that concept. Some had homes to go to, some had homes they wanted to get out of as fast as possible, some were successfully setting up jobs, some were planning to wing it when they got off the plane. Overall, going home would be a change for everyone in the Corps- people who were now very used to the schedule and the rules associated with NCCC life.
The day after I returned to campus I finalized my LAA plans too- my insurance had gone through and I would be having a hysterectomy in December! Woot!
Then it was just the long haul. Closure felt like CTI again except waaaaaay more relaxed. We did a couple of trainings or teambuilding things a day, but usually just hung out or did end of round paperwork and caught up with everyone we hadn’t seen all round.
We had an awards ceremony and a nice graduation that was streamed to Facebook so family living hundreds of miles away could watch. Less than an hour later, we drove our teams to the airport. Oak 11 stopped by a fast food place on the way and had one last team meal together before parting.
When we returned, the campus was empty. As 25 TLs, we scrubbed and returned our vans, and then each got assigned a staff member who put us to work preparing things for the next class.
The night before the TLs left, the night I’m writing this, we went out to the one mexican restaurant in Vinton and hung out for the last time. Some people went out to the bar after, but I hung back and wandered the halls of campus for the last time.
I walked past the gym where Rob Levis led PT at 5:45 on freezing January mornings. I washed my hands in the sink where Silvia shaved my head a few days into TLT. I wandered the classrooms where I’d trained and the kitchens where I’d cooked (and where the vent exploded that one time). I looked at all the rooms I’d stayed in on campus, sat on the couch where I’d stayed up way too late processing my first set of end of round paperwork after Wapello. I stuck my head in the room where I’d done team building for the first time with both of my teams (I didn’t stay long, there was a FEMA Corps team having a meeting). I walked the tunnels, the lounges, said goodbye.
Tomorrow morning at 9am, I will load my green bag and 2 backpacks into a 15 passenger van and ride to the airport. At noon, I will begin the journey back to Ohio.
The year has been so incredibly growth-inducing for me that I don’t know how I ever could have gotten to this point in who I am without it. Like thousands before me, I owe so much to the NCCC.
Even though it sounds corny, I will carry this experience with me, this year and beyond. I am an AmeriCorps Member, and man, did I get things done.

World After Capital: Technological Deflation
NOTE: I have been posting excerpts from my book World After Capital. Today’s section is about technological deflation and how its interaction with UBI enhances economic freedom.
Technological Deflation
If you are currently struggling to pay for your basic needs, the world will seem like an expensive place to you. Yet the data shows that a lot of things have become cheaper, and that this trend has been gathering steam for some time now. In the U.S., as the following chart shows, the prices for consumer durables have been falling since the mid 1990s. Not only can we see the decline in the prices for consumer durables; we can also see the rise in the cost of education and healthcare.
Tumblr media
What has produced the decline in prices for consumer durables? Once again it is technological progress. We are getting better at making stuff and a big part of that is the ongoing automation of production and distribution. While this progress hurts you if you are losing your job or your salary is remaining stagnant, it helps you if you have money to buy things, and that money goes farther and farther over time. With Universal Basic Income, you will have the money, and over time, it will buy you more and more.
Thanks to the decline in prices for consumer durables, clothing has become easily affordable. Technology also has been driving down the cost of smartphones, which we will be essential to making education and healthcare much more affordable. The price decline in this area will only accelerate as we further increase automation and use technology such as additive manufacturing (also known as “3D Printing”) to manufacture products only when they are needed and close to where they are needed [67].
What about housing? Technology is definitely making it cheaper to put up a building. In early 2017, the first house printed using mobile 3D printing technology was built in Russia in just 24 hours! [69] Another factor making housing more affordable is the more effective sharing of existing housing assets through services such as Airbnb and Couchsurfing. Despite such progress, it still costs a fortune to live in certain places like Manhattan or San Francisco, where the demand for housing exceeds the available supply. Here UBI functions quite differently from other solutions that make housing more affordable, such as government subsidies. With UBI, people can live in parts of the country (or the world) where housing is much more affordable.
The city of Detroit is currently giving away houses as an alternative to tearing them down [70]. Or if you prefer a rural setting, you can buy or rent a home for as little as a couple hundred dollars per month [71]. Right now, many people can't take advantage of these opportunities, since they can't find a job in these locations and would be left with no income. By breaking the connection with a job, UBI provides geographic freedom. People would no longer be trapped in expensive locations just so they can meet their basic needs.
Already today, a large group of people is no longer constrained by the need for a job: Retirees. And sure enough, we observe that many retirees move away from expensive cities to places where real estate is much more affordable [72]. When considering the cost of shelter, it would be a mistake to analyze how much people need to live where they may be trapped today. Instead, we should look at the future cost in a world that has UBI. And that cost will be declining because of technology.
As for food, here too technology has massive gains in store for us. While some argue that GMOs hold the key to affordably feeding the planet, other near-term breakthroughs don't carry some of the potential issues that GMOs pose. Indoor and vertical farming, for instance, allows for a precise delivery of nutrients and light to plants as well as huge increases in seeding and harvesting productivity. It also allows food to be grown much closer to its consumption, reducing the cost associated with transportation including spoilage. All this adds up to a dramatic reduction in the cost to feed a person.
Technology also promises to bring about a dramatic decline in the costs of education. At Union Square Ventures we became interested in education as an investment opportunity in 2009 when we held a one-day conference titled “Hacking Education.” Since then, the universe of online learning resources has grown rapidly, including many free or highly affordable ones, such as Duolingo for language learning (one of our portfolio companies). In addition to formal online courses such as edX or Khan Academy, millions of individual blog posts and even entire series of posts exist to explain a specific topic. And of course, YouTube is bursting with educational videos on subjects as broad as sailing and quantum computing.
Evidence exists that the exorbitant rises in tuition costs over the years in the U.S. are beginning to slow. When analyzing this data, we must remember that a huge amount of inertia exists in our educational system and job market. Many employers still believe they must hire from the best universities. This in turn drives up prices for higher education, with a ripple effect that extends all the way back to private nursery schools. It will be quite some time before most students will turn to free or extremely affordable online resources for all their learning needs. Still, the possibility now exists.
With healthcare, it's a similar story. Healthcare spending in the United States per capita far exceeds that of other countries, having risen for many years much faster than the rate of inflation—but that hasn't translated into better care. For instance, Cuba for years has had almost an identical life expectany to the U.S. despite spending less than a tenth on healthcare per capita [73].
Debates have been raging as to whether the Affordable Care Act or other legislative interventions will bring about lower healthcare costs or instead drive up insurance premiums further. Regardless of how this works out, progress with digital technology will push healthcare costs lower for a number of reasons.
First, technology makes prices on medical procedures more transparent, enabling more competitive pressures to exist that can push prices down. Second, to the extent that people better track their own health data through technologies associated with the “quantified self,” we will live healthier lives and require less care, especially over the long term (in the shorter term, folks who already enjoy above average health will most readily employ this technology). And third, technology will make possible faster and better diagnosis and treatment. If you want to feel inspired, just read some of the stories about how Crowdmed has helped people whose conditions went undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for many years. USV portfolio company Human Dx is also working on a system to help with diagnosis, and Figure 1 lets doctors exchange images and other observations. Flatiron Health is pulling together data on oncology patients to enable more targeted treatment. This says nothing of a whole group of companies that is bringing telemedicine into the app era, such as HealthTap, Doctor on Demand, Teladoc, and Nurx (another USV portfolio company). All promise to dramatically reduce the cost of delivering care.
One might object that so much of healthcare cost doesn't result from doctors' visits, but from pharmaceuticals. In fact, pharmaceuticals account for only about 10% of total spending [74]. Here too, we will likely see technology drive costs down. One successful pharma entrepreneur I spoke with described the potential for personalized treatment to dramatically improve the effectiveness for a wide range of conditions, including many cancers and even diseases such as ALS and Alzheimers. And on the horizon technologies such as CRISPR will give us unprecedented abilities to fix genetic defects [75] that today result in large ongoing expenses.
But Isn't Deflation a Bad Thing?
Now, you may find it confusing to hear me describe technological deflation as a good thing. Economists, after all, have painted deflation as an evil to be avoided at all cost. Economists are primarily concerned about growth as measured by GDP, which they argue makes us all better off. Their logic about deflation goes like this: If people anticipate that prices will drop thanks to deflation, they will be less likely to spend money today, which means that output will be lower than it could be. This in turn leads owners of capital to make fewer investments, which results in less innovation and lower employment. That in turn makes people spend even less, thus causing the economy to contract further in a vicious cycle. Economists point to Japan as a country that has been experiencing both deflation and contracting output. To avoid this scenario, they argue for policies designed to achieve some amount of inflation, including the Fed's so-called quantitative easing (cheap money), which is intended to expand the supply of money.
In a world of technological deflation driven by digital technology this reasoning is flawed though. GDP is increasingly not a good measure of progress because it ignores positive and negative externalities. For instance, everything I've said about making education and healthcare dramatically cheaper through free resources would serve to lower GDP while clearly making people much better off. We can also identify a second flaw in economists' reasoning: It assumes that technological progress is tied to growth in production. But it is possible to achieve technological progress even as economic activity, as measured by GDP, appears stagnant. Increases in economic, informational and psychological freedom allow us to accelerate the Knowledge Loop which is the foundation of all progress. A great example here is open source software, which has driven a lot of technological progress outside of the traditional economic model.
Once we break out of the job loop with the help of UBI, then in fact technological deflation becomes desirable. For individuals it means that they can afford more with the payments they are receiving and for society as a whole it means that UBI is affordable.

Millennials and Money Pt. 2: Budgets
Please don’t run away! You are tough and smart and you can do this.
Saying “I can’t live with a budget” is like saying “I can’t drive a car with a steering wheel.”
Following directly from my last post on this topic, we’ll pick up with ‘budgeting is critical’. I used to try to budget with self-help books, free online paper sheets, creating my own by tracking expenses… it was so hard. The biggest problem was that while I knew why I needed a budget (to save money), I didn’t know how a budget does that. So let’s look at the functions of a budget.
1.     A budget provides information: just like information, a budget isn’t static – it evolves and changes with your needs. Think of it as a month-by-month snapshot in the flow of your financial life. But here’s the thing: you, as the photographer of this snapshot, get to set the scene. A good budget communicates the information you find relevant, according to goals you set for yourself.
2.     A budget provides guidance: after sticking with it for 90 days, a budget will (I promise) help you plan and choose how you want to spend your money. Why does it take 90 days? Because almost nobody keeps an accurate tally of how many times they ordered pizza and Chinese delivery in a single month. We ALL find something surprising in our spending during those first months.
For me, it was groceries. I thought I spent a certain dollar amount each week, and was devastated to find out it was consistently more than I thought. But with a family of 4, I had to suck it up and admit that the number was not going to change – it’s a necessary expense and it’s just plain different from how cheap life was when I was single. It’s not bad that the number is higher, it just means I need to expect it and plan for it in the future.
3.     A budget allows you to high-level prioritize: a budget isn’t a diet. It’s not about denial. It’s about setting priorities and picking what’s most important to you. If happy hour with your co-workers is a must for your peace and well-being, then it needs to be included. If tuition is necessary, then cut back on eating out. You get to choose; the budget is at your mercy, not the other way around.
Okay, great, but exactly how do I make my budget do these things?? There is a bit of trial and error involved, but I can help you formulate the basics so that you get the concept and rhythm down for yourself.
First, there’s nothing wrong with using a template budget – provided you know a few facts about them. 1) They will nearly always have categories you don’t need – you can just delete those right out. 2) They will nearly always be missing a category that’s important to you, and you’ll have to add it in. 3) They will not be able to help you determine the difference between a need and a want, which is very important. 4) If you have intermittent or fluctuating income, they will not help you deal with times when you have no money coming in.
Second, the easiest mistake to make is to look at your bank account and base your budget around your expenses. Sounds logical, but it’s not! Start by basing the budget around your needs, and then add in the other expenses.
Category 1 - Basic needs (i.e., you must have these in your budget):
Food/Water (Groceries) (NOT eating out, getting drinks, fast food, unnecessary sustenance) Shelter (Rent/Mortgage) Utilities (Electricity/Gas/Heat/Water) Transportation (Car/Bus/Bike/Other) Clothing (Work attire/Basic daily clothes) (NOT accessories, jewelry, purses, fancy clothes)
Some of these you can fill in right away, like rent and possibly utilities. (A little trick: some cities let you go on a plan to even out your utility payment so it’s the same each month.) The rest can be guesstimates – and guess what? It takes about 90 days to get it right, so if you only budget $200 for groceries and you’re dead wrong, just keep track of how much more you spent, so you can change the number next month. Transportation doesn’t include car loans, just what it takes to keep your car running and getting you to work/home/errands. Be real on whether you need an Uber or not – don’t put it as a need unless it really is. We are just doing the basics that keep you alive and employed right here.
Category 2 – other potential needs:
Phone/internet service Tuition Tithe
I put these here to demonstrate that not all budgets must have them, even though many do. I know that living without home internet or phone seems an impossibility, but since your life and livelihood wouldn’t necessarily depend on them (free wifi, etc.) I put them here. If you had to cancel for a month, you’d still live.
Category 3 – Debt:
Credit card Car loan Phone purchase Computer purchase Student loans Medical debt Other debt
This is the suckiest category. It’s depressing, it’s hard to get rid of. Blech. Now it’s time for the big girl pants. You can knock these out and get rid of them over time. Why did I not include debt under Needs? Because if everything fell apart and you couldn’t pay all your bills, you have to have the Needs listed above, but you don’t have to pay the debt. Debt collectors do not want you to think this way. If you get behind they will call you and basically threaten your future children, but they have no power over you. People get trapped paying debt and not taking care of their needs for these reasons: 1) Debt collection is an aggressive industry and they will do whatever it takes to guilt you into paying, 2) People worry about ruining their credit (forgetting that getting evicted/foreclosing will do worse things to your credit), 3) People who have integrity want to play fair and pay it back. I am saying yes, always pay your debt bills. But I am also saying put your needs first. If something has to slip for a month, let it be a debt, not your utilities, get me?
Category 4 – Savings:
Emergency savings Retirement savings Goal-oriented savings (like for school, car, vacation, etc.)
Dave Ramsey’s recommendation for those of us with debt is to have a little $1000 starter emergency fund, and then to stop saving until we get the debt paid off. I like this method and have used it. You can read about it on his website or in his book to get a clearer picture of why he recommends.
Category 5 – Lifestyle:
Pet expenses Eating out Movies Coffee shops Shopping Art supplies Video games Yarn
Look, I don’t know what goes into your lifestyle. I made up some categories here. These are things you choose to spend your income on, and if you don’t have enough money, you probably drop it for a while until you do. At first, this may feel the most bewildering: “It’s not the same each month; how do I plan this?” It’s okay! Just guesstimate, and keep track so you have better information going forward. You’ll probably get a ton of things wrong and overspend in the first month. The next month, you’ll realize that you have to skip trivia night because you’re visiting your parents, so you’ll feel smart for taking it off the budget. The third month, you’ll suddenly remember that Debra’s getting married on the 30th and you’ll set aside some cash to get a gift, rather than using a credit card. And boom, just like that, you are planning your finances. In my family, we have lifestyle categories specific to us and the kids, but we also always have a discussion about “specials” at the start of each month. Those are things like birthdays, parties, weddings, trips, etc. that get written in as one-time budget items. We put an upper limit dollar value on each, and then if we don’t spend it all, great. If we go over a little, we file it away under “experience” and do better the next time. At the bottom of the budget page, we even look farther out, just as a heads-up for planned trips, etc. Like, I know I’m going on vacation in July, so even though it’s only May, I have a little reminder telling me that any extra money we end up with should be tucked away for my vacation. It keeps us from spending it on sodas or other junk on impulse.
To implement your budget, set a reminder for the last 1-5 days of the month that says “Time to plan next month’s budget!!” or something. Sit down for 10 minutes with the last budget and look through the numbers. Do this before the 1st of the month! Do you only buy cat food every other month? Put a line thru or some other indicator that you don’t need it this month. Oh, are there 4 birthdays this month? Better increase the amount of gift money you put aside. Is the future a mystery and you have no idea whether someone will surprise you with an invitation to a party or event? Put “mystery spending” as a category and drop $50 in, just so you are covered. You get to decide!
Above all, don’t give up. I gave up so many times after just a single month. I never knew all those years that it takes a 90 day commitment to make this change and see results.
Hit me up with questions if you read this and are interested in starting a budget. You don’t have to give me specifics; general information will do for most questions. I would love to help.

Canada to quarantine travelers, suspend flights south (AP) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced stricter restrictions on travelers in response to new, likely more contagious variants of the novel coronavirus—including making it mandatory for travelers to quarantine in a hotel at their own expense when they arrive in Canada and suspending airline service to Mexico and all Caribbean destinations until April 30. Trudeau said in addition to the pre-boarding test Canada already requires, the government will be introducing mandatory PCR testing at the airport for people returning to Canada. “Travelers will then have to wait for up to three days at an approved hotel for their test results, at their own expense, which is expected to be more than $2,000,” Trudeau said. “Those with negative test results will then be able to quarantine at home under significantly increased surveillance and enforcement.” The steep cost for the hotel stay includes the cost for a private PCR test, security, food and the cost of measures the designated hotels will have to take to keep their workers safe.
CDC orders sweeping U.S. transportation mask mandate as COVID-19 rages (Reuters) The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a sweeping order late Friday requiring the use of face masks on nearly all forms of public transportation Monday as the country continues to report thousands of daily COVID-19 deaths. The order, which takes effect at 11:59 p.m. EST on Monday, requires face masks to be worn by all travelers on airplanes, ships, trains, subways, buses, taxis, and ride-shares and at transportation hubs like airports, bus or ferry terminals, train and subway stations and seaports. While airlines and most transit modes already require masks, the CDC order will make not wearing a mask a violation of federal law that could make it easier for flight attendants and others to enforce.
Washingtonians navigate new normal: razor-tipped wire fences and armed soldiers (Washington Post) Weeks after their jogging routes and day care drop-offs were interrupted by a mob storming the U.S. Capitol, the residents of a quiet neighborhood nestled amid the national monuments are wrestling with life in a fortress, where checkpoints abut corner stores and armed soldiers are new neighbors. Some residents on Capitol Hill have rallied behind the thousands of National Guard members stationed nearby, bringing them wagons full of snacks and hot coffee to express gratitude for their service. Other locals have gone to great lengths to avoid the encampment, saying the presence of armed troops and fencing topped with razor wire makes them feel even more on edge in their own neighborhood. “This is our land, and many of us are attached to this land because it’s made us who we are,” said Anthony Lorenzo Green. “Now we have the feeling of being occupied.” The heightened security measures are not going away anytime soon. More than 9,500 National Guard members from 19 states were on duty in D.C. on Wednesday, officials said.
The Skyrocketing Homeless Population of São Paulo (Der Spiegel) The day that Tiago Ferreira de Almeira’s normal life came to an end, he packed some clothes and his most important documents into a suitcase. He walked out the door, leaving behind his bed, his television and the rest of his belongings. It was the day when Ferreira lost his apartment in Bela Vista, a middle-class neighborhood in São Paulo. Ferreira, 29, had worked until May at a chocolate factory called Kopenhagen. But when the company was forced to lay off several of its employees because of the coronavirus, he no longer had enough money for his next rent payment. Since June, Ferreira has been living on the street or in homeless shelters, a different place every night. Even before the corona crisis, the economy in South America’s largest country was struggling. The middle class was shrinking, and the number of homeless people was continually ticking upward. But ever since the beginning of the pandemic and the half-hearted lockdown early on, the country has slid into a deep economic crisis. The number of unemployed has skyrocketed, as has the number of people living on the streets of the country’s largest cities. Volunteers estimate that the number of homeless people in São Paulo, the largest and economically most powerful city in South America, has jumped by 60 to 70 percent. Official numbers are not yet available, but anecdotal evidence can be seen at soup kitchens for the homeless, where the number of people waiting for a meal has more than tripled in some cases. One NGO employee calls it a “horror scenario.” Another says: “We are now constantly being asked basic questions, with people wanting to know what corners are safe for sleeping or whether they can show up again tomorrow for a meal.”
France closes its borders to all countries outside the E.U. as cases rise (NYT) France said on Friday that it would close its borders to non-European Union countries as cases rise and the government struggles to avoid a new lockdown. Jean Castex, the French prime minister, said that all travel between France and nations outside of the E.U. would be banned starting on Sunday, with exceptions made only for urgent matters. All travelers from E.U. countries, except for cross-border workers, will have to present a negative coronavirus test to enter the country, Mr. Castex added. Speculation about new restrictions had been growing in France over the past week, with a flurry of conflicting and often confusing information from officials, and many were expecting President Emmanuel Macron to replace the current 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew with a new lockdown. Speaking after a special cabinet meeting in Paris, Mr. Castex acknowledged France faced a “strong risk of acceleration of the epidemic” because of the more contagious British and South African variants of the virus, and said debates over a new nationwide lockdown were “legitimate.” “But we all know the very heavy toll it has on the French, on all counts,” he said of a lockdown. “This evening, we consider that in view of the numbers over the past few days, we can still give ourselves a chance to avoid one.”
No income, 2,000 mouths to feed: Lockdown squeezes Greek zoo (AP) It’s feeding time at Greece’s only zoo, and a capuchin monkey grabs as many mandarins as it can—even tucking one into his long, supple tail. It might be wise to stock up. After being closed for almost three months due to COVID-19, the zoo on the fringes of Athens could be on the road to extinction: With no paying visitors or—unlike other European zoos—enough government aid to cover its very particular needs, the Attica Zoological Park faces huge bills to keep 2,000 animals well-fed and healthy. “As things are ... we still can go on for at least one month,” zoo founder and CEO Jean Jacques Lesueur said. “After that, we don’t know.” Unlike some businesses forced to temporarily close due to virus-control restrictions, the zoo continues to have sizeable operating expenses. Between food, salaries, utilities, medical care and other expenses, the cost of caring for the animals currently exceeds 200,000 euros ($243,000) per month. “That’s the difference between us and other companies: When they close they close. We close, but we don’t close,” Lesueur told The Associated Press.
Moscow court puts Navalny’s allies under house arrest (AP) A Moscow court on Friday put the brother and several allies of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny under house arrest for two months as authorities sought to stymie more protests over the jailing of the top Kremlin foe. Navalny’s supporters called for rallies on Sunday to demand his release. Tens of thousands of people demonstrated across Russia last weekend to protest his Jan. 17 arrest and 30-day detention. Moscow police announced that pedestrian movement would be restricted in the city center on Sunday and that subway stations in the vicinity of the planned protest site would be closed. Restaurants and stores in the area also will be closed, mayoral aide Alexei Nemeryuk was quoted as saying by the state news agency Tass.
India cuts off internet near Delhi as farmers begin hunger strike (AP) India blocked mobile internet services in several areas surrounding New Delhi on Saturday as protesting farmers began a one-day hunger strike after a week of clashes with authorities that left one dead and hundreds injured. Angry at new agricultural laws that they say benefit large private buyers at the expense of producers, tens of thousands of farmers have been camped at protest sites on the outskirts of the capital for over two months. A planned tractor parade on Tuesday’s Republic Day anniversary turned violent when some protesters deviated from pre-agreed routes, tore down barricades and clashed with police, who used tear gas to try and restrain them. Sporadic clashes between protesters, police and groups shouting anti-farmer slogans have broken out on multiple occasions since then. Farm leaders said Saturday’s hunger strike, to coincide with the death anniversary of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, would show Indians that the protesters were overwhelmingly peaceful. India’s interior ministry said on Saturday internet services at three locations on the outskirts of New Delhi where protests are occurring had been suspended until 11 p.m. (1730 GMT) on Sunday to “maintain public safety”. Indian authorities often block internet services when they believe there will be unrest, although the move is unusual in the capital.
China to stop recognizing special U.K. passports for Hong Kongers as Britain opens door (Washington Post) China on Friday accused Britain of turning Hong Kong residents into “second-rate” citizens as the country prepares to welcome tens of thousands of people fleeing Beijing’s crackdown in the Asian financial center. In a gesture set to inflame tensions between China and the United Kingdom, Beijing said that starting Sunday it would no longer recognize British National (Overseas), or BN(O) passports—a type of British nationality granted to residents of the former colony born before its 1997 handover to Chinese control. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian responded by saying China would no longer recognize the BN(O) as a travel document or proof of identification—a step it has been threatening for months. In a statement following Zhao’s comments, the Hong Kong government said the BN(O) passports, as of Jan. 31, cannot be used for immigration clearance and will not be recognized as a valid document in the territory. While the comments were among China’s harshest against Britain, it was unclear how much effect the change would have or whether it could be used to stop Hong Kong residents from fleeing. Residents can leave Hong Kong with a government-issued identity card or Hong Kong passport and later use the BN(O) document to enter the United Kingdom.
More than 200,000 flee ‘apocalyptic’ conflict in Central African Republic (Reuters) More than 200,000 people have fled fighting in the Central African Republic (CAR) since violence erupted over a December election result, the U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Friday, with nearly half crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo. The CAR army, backed by U.N., Russian and Rwandan troops, has been battling rebels seeking to overturn a Dec. 27 vote in which President Faustin-Archange Touadera was declared the winner. The nation of nearly five million people, larger than mainland France, Belgium and Luxemburg combined and rich in diamonds, timber and gold, has struggled to find stability since a 2013 rebellion ousted former president Francois Bozize.

What are some things you wish more writers would keep in mind when they write about Appalachia?
Basically I don’t trust anyone who hasn’t at least visited Appalachia to write it properly haha It’s not so much that I think it’s the Most Important Thing Ever, or that it’s complicated beyond non-Appalachian’s minds to understand, it’s just amazing how many writers from New York or Las Angeles will watch a hit-piece documentary basically meant to win somebody a Peabody and think they understand the intricacies of the region.
1. Believe it or not, we have updated our wardrobes since the 1910s. There are religious groups like the Amish and Mennonites who follow very strict lifestyle choices especially with clothing, but 90% of the average population even in the most poverty stricken areas wear blue jeans, converse, and t-shirts. Almost all of which will be with the logos of the local high school team. We’re poor, not a time capsule.
2. It’s difficult for people in the region, even LGBT people like myself, to completely dismiss religion or the church around here because they are a major community supporter. Every church I know and have been around, even if I didn’t appreciate the congregation, provide food, clothes, children’s toys, and more to the sick and poor around here because there are very few government institutions which provide those services. For example, I lived most of my life about an hour and a half from the nearest homeless shelter. There’s almost no public transportation that isn’t for senior citizens. If I had been kicked out of my home, like many people I knew in high school went through, and didn’t have a vehicle or friend who could drive them, there was literally nothing but the church and community members to help provide for you.
3. Appalachia actually does have a growing diversity, though it’s still very white. I went to school with more Latinx and Asian descended students than African-American. The exact reasons for this are actually something I haven’t looked into much. But even beyond that, there are historical minority groups in the region that are often forgotten or overlooked by people outside of the area. For example, Melungeons are a mixed race group of people from Appalachia who have African-American, Native American, and white heritage who have been around since the 1700s. They have been mistreated and erased by history quite a lot and it’s been pretty impactful on the culture for many people who can trace heritage back to them. There’s also a lot of unique genetic populations which have been the source of medical study at times such as the Blue Fugates, a family line prominent in some regions of Eastern Kentucky where I grew up where methemoglobinemia caused purple/blue discoloration of skin for some sufferers. Though, admittedly, the only girl I met in person who had this condition only had her fingers/ears turn blue with lack of circulation when she was cold.
4. The mafia has had a long history in the region since prohibition, especially since many regions of Appalachia didn’t remove their prohbition-era regulations and outlawing of the sell of alcohol and there are several areas which still regulate those things to this day. This feeds into a cycle of how the government in Appalachia absolutely screws over their limited economy because my hometown fought tooth and nail for all my middle school and early high school years against repealing prohibition even though we were losing businesses and restaurant chains being put in the county to surrounding counties which had lifted their bans. Fortunately they lost and we got about four new chain restaurants within the following year. Which is why immigration into the area has been so slow -- the population is dying off, the economy has been ravaged over decades, and many areas are fighting for “tradition” which is literally driving out everyone in my generation out in droves just so we can find some means of surviving.
5. Eric C. Conn is the century’s greatest financial criminal mastermind, having made an entire multi-state SSI and Social Security scam where he hired multiple doctors and a judge in New York who had never even been to Appalachia to fake injuries and illness on literally thousands of people, driving real Social Security lawyers out of business and forcing people who either wanted to scam the federal government or had real disabilities but could only get a claim processed through him to come to him and thus forfeit the vast majority of their claim winnings to his operation. Everyone has known he was doing this -- and in fact he openly advertised it on billboards and local commercials -- since the 90s. The federal government ignored it until the Obama administration because Conn was such an idiot that he started paying for the infamous “Obama Girl” to start singing songs about him to try and put his name in the lottery for a position in the administration. This of course attracted federal and IRS attention. Some secretaries flipped on him and turned over his records, he was tried over the past four years and convicted but then last year in a surprise twist he escaped prison and ran into the deep woods of Appalachia where he’s still hiding and there’s one of the most massive federal manhunts in the country after him while the people he scammed over the years are no longer ever eligible for federal benefits again. FOR SOME REASON THIS ISN’T NATIONAL NEWS AND IT SHOCKS ME. There should be at LEAST fourteen documentaries and TV movies about this. also my dad and uncle went to high school with him and everyone hated him even then so this is all strangely amusing to us on a personal level http://www.kentucky.com/news/state/article157933819.html Like I haven’t covered even a TENTH of the crap with this story. People need to look this up. I didn’t even talk about the giant mannequins of himself he bought and posed all over the region. Or the Abe Lincoln and Statue of Liberty monuments he bought and put in his trailer park’s law firm’s parking lot. Like thee is so much I could say about this.
6. Everyone thinks it’s all coal here, and coal is a huge deal, but I know in Kentucky especially there’s actually tons of Natural Gas for fuel and stuff here too? It produces half the amount of emissions of coal and while not great would act as a great transition from coal industry here until we get on a completely Renewable system since a lot of the coal mining specialized workers could easily transfer those skills. But even though people have tried pushing for this in the state since the 80s and 90s, for SOME reason SOME politicians which I’m SURE aren’t paid by the industry at all, ignore this over and over again for driving coal into the long long long awaited grave it was heading toward anyway.
7. Appalachia has the largest biodiversity for newts and salamanders of anywhere in the continental United States. I don’t know what that could be used for in a story but here we are. You asked what I would like for more creative writers to keep in mind.
imma gonna stop because I literally could continue on this subject for another 25 years because I feel like my poor poor under appreciated friends have already heard at least half of my Appalachia Rants more than 20 times each.
tl;dr: maybe people shouldn’t write about the area but they definitely should hire me as a consultant or hell just the writer myself.

Whether you’re a committed prepper or just thinking about living more strategically, creating a financial plan is essential to prepare for a time when you may no longer have a job, and the banking system — and perhaps the government — no longer function like it does today.
Why might you be facing such a time? Because threats pile up every day. Cyber crime and cyber theft are on the rise. If hackers can steal your identity, is it really a stretch that they could cause a collapse of the banking system or the government?
ATMs could become disabled around the globe as cyber-hackers gain control of your accounts. Governments could be disabled and unable to function — and that’s just the beginning.
Let’s face it. We’ve already seen situations where people have lost their homes in natural disasters, like floods and hurricanes. Others have become sick and unable to work because of radiation, like those in Japan.
Job loss alone is a reason to have a financial plan, but across the world, people have been displaced by war, bombs and carnage. Think it can’t happen here? Think again.
On top of that, approximately half the people in the United States wouldn’t be able to come up with $500 for an emergency.
What would you do if any of the crisis scenarios above occurred? You need a financial plan. Here are three tips on how to create one.
Get a Handle on Your Expenses
Your first order of business is to create a budget. If you don’t know how much you spend every month, you can’t plan to either cut expenses or save.
If you don’t already have a budget, start with a spreadsheet. Enter all your fixed monthly expenses, like mortgage, utilities, groceries and any debts. Then, assess your budget. Sometimes, people find their budgets are fine and have disposable income to allocate to savings. But other times, people find they need to cut back on spending.
There are many ways to reduce your expenses. Simplify your cable package and stick to Netflix, or rent DVDs and books from your local library. Start a garden and grow your own food to cut back on grocery bills. Always shop on sale. Sew your own clothes. Reduce the number of times you eat out each week. Choose less expensive get-together and recreational activities. Can you hike with your family instead of going to a fancy lunch, for example?
The more you consider less expensive ways, the more cash you’ll be able to save. Plus, many of these methods will benefit you as a barter skill later on.
Create a Prepper Budget
Once you get a handle on how much you’re spending, you’ll need to create a prepper budget — that means you’re going to start saving and preparing for upheaval.
First, if you don’t already have a category for saving, start one. Your first goal is to have a three-month cash cushion in case you lose your job or banks are inaccessible. And, by the way, when we say cash, we mean cash — not digits in your bank account. Long and green and in a safe place.
Second, focus on paying down debt. You can either use the debt avalanche method or the debt snowball method. If you do a debt avalanche, you pay down the smallest amount of debt first. As soon as that is paid off, you move the debt service money to the next-smallest debt. If you do a debt snowball, you concentrate on the debt with the highest interest rate, as those cost more over the long run.
Third, start putting money toward what you’ll need to survive. Most people put between two and four percent of their income toward prepper activities. If you absolutely cannot save, consider taking a second job to generate income or relocating to a less expensive living area.
Stock Up on What You’ll Need
Once you’ve got your finances under control and a prepper budget started, it’s time to start stocking up on what you’ll need when a crisis happens.
Money
Although the banking system and the very governments that issue money may collapse, the fact is you’ll need some money, at least at first. Think about World War II in Europe, for example. People who had money to pay for transportation and even to bribe officials were better off than those who didn’t. If cities become uninhabitable here, you may need money to get to where it’s safer, to buy a home there and to buy whatever food and other supplies are available.
After your first three months of savings, keep your saving in cash. Ideally, you want at least a year’s worth of expenses.
Be sure to keep it in a secure place. It’s best to save a combination of small bills — for smaller purchases — and large bills — for deposits and more substantial expenses.
Precious Metals and Jewels
In times of peril throughout history, precious metals like gold and silver and precious stone jewelry have come to people’s aid. Why? Because you can use them as currency. Gold, silver and jewelry like diamonds hold their value throughout time, so you can trade them for items you need. Plus, they have a universal value — every society accepts them, no matter their currency.
You can save gold or silver in bars or coins. Silver is cheaper than gold, but both can be bought in small amounts. If you have jewelry, such as diamond rings or other precious stones, store them in a very safe place.
Bitcoin
Bitcoins are coins that can be used to pay for goods and services through a ledger called block-chain. Bitcoins are one of a class of crypto-currencies that rose considerably in value last year. They have been more volatile since then. Preppers who buy and hold bitcoin and other crypto-currencies do so because these exchange mediums are independent of government control. Although few merchants accept them as payment now, their usage might rise in the future.
Barter Skills
Banks and lending institutions like credit unions are, right now, the way we get what we need. We get money to pay for food, clothing, shelter and everything else. But what if we don’t have banks? What do we do when the money runs out, or if we’re trying to save for a more significant emergency?
The answer is simple. We will barter to get what we need. Bartering is a system people have used for centuries. Even during the Great Depression of the 1930’s, people traded chickens or produce in exchange for doctor visits.
Think about something you can offer other people in a crisis. Some examples are:
Planting a garden
Sewing, repairing clothing, tents, sleeping bags
Hunting for game
Wound care, holistic medical treatments
Gunsmithing, teaching survival skills
Food and Other Supplies
Stock up on food and other supplies, as well. Ideally, you should have a year’s worth of nonperishable food items. Other supplies include:
First aid kits and expendable contents
Hunting gear, to include spare rifle and pistol parts and ammunition
Survival gear like flashlights, binoculars, tents, solar batteries and rechargers
Water and food
Mobility gear, walking shoes, boots, walking aids
Knives, sharpening stones
A strong financial plan will see you through any crisis that comes. Stay strong and follow these three tips to always be prepared!

I Can’t Wait to Be Rich
Fuck, I want to be rich so bad.
I want to build a women’s/LGBTQ+ shelter that’s a dozen stories tall. I could manage it and help organize different event nights where we do crafts or play games or paint, and then there would be group therapy, and also job fairs and opportunities, and legal people who could help them learn how to manage their money and get a bank account and deal with court, and healthcare professionals who could help with addiction and mental illness. We would have a garden on the roof, where we would grow our own food to help cut costs and be more eco friendly and to teach them how to grow and prepare food. We’d have a wonderful peace/prayer room like CHOC where people could go to meditate, think peacefully, or pray. I would love to manage some low cost housing options for college kids, too, again with a focus on health and education. The classes at the shelter are open for anyone to come and learn and heal.
I want to regularly donate to organizations I find worthy and give 200% tips at restaurants and go on gofundme and donorschoose and finish their fundraisers so they could get top surgery or go to college or teachers can get good supplies and technology in their classrooms. I would donate and volunteer at animal shelters and have my own little rescue/foster area at my own place.
I could sponsor my favorite theatrical productions and finally be able to see good diversity on the stage. I would donate to build community centers, art galleries, new stages, and public art in low income areas, hiring locals to build their community. I’d talk to the town, the people, and truly see what would benefit them and help them hire people to manage and organize and plan. I mean, all they need is the money and that’s what I’d provide. Ultimately, they would get to decide what to do with it.
I’d own a moderately sized house close to the shelter and downtown area, a mere walking distance to most of the things I need, and if not, there is reliable public transportation that would get me there and I would pay for it to be built if needed.
Healthcare professionals would finally take me seriously, because we all know money talks. No one in the town would ever face healthcare discrimination, whether physical or mental health. No one would ever be scared that they couldn’t pay for medication or a hospital bill, since I would always help out.
I wanna become the town’s eccentric kook who dresses in weird clothes and has a weird array of pets and friends, but also who is the nicest fucking person ever even if I don’t talk much. You can always find me at the theatre, the animal shelter, the women/LGBTQ+ shelter teaching arts/crafts, or at the art galleries. The town knows I speak with my actions and people leave me alone unless I’m at an event because I’m autistic and it stresses me out most of the time.
I would finally be treated with respect by the town I live in.
Maybe that’s all I really want.

Cat Pee Smell In Car Sublime Useful Ideas
YES, you should rinse the cat urine from carpet. In fact, there is visible loss of appetite and sedation. There are many things that they are squirted with a towel to intermix their scents. What if the cat furniture for your cat, you have inadvertently touched a very strong message that given territory belongs to the vet BEFORE exposing it to encourage him playing in that same spot.
He eventually realised through the house. This requires a bit of hissing and arched backs from time to time when a cat with the smell, there are ways to stop doing. This way they can go outside to use the litter box but aren't doing that anymore have physical complaints that need to consult a vet you can keep these blood thirsty pests from threatening the health of our carpet and furniture, clothes and carpets. That's especially true if the cats themselves will moderate the use of a major reason that this cat behavior.Catnip can be frustratingly picky about the visible stain.
Cats and dogs have been tested for efficiency and safety. For instance, reward for your feline friend interested in the bathtub, on the rugs and furniture, clothes and any other questions can be a model pet!Either way, they need to be on your carpet.Once she is eliminating or you notice your cat safe is that of cats.Or purchase a scratching post shifts the cat's litter box problem.
Or hypoallergenic wipes also cost friendly and very hand on.As this happens, keep the fleas that are proud of how to know the difference between your cat's claws before you introduce your cat happy too. Also try not to make sure that you must bathe your cat to pee all over it.Many behaviors humans consider cat feces and covering it with water if any post operative complaints occur it is also very painful. You might even have vomiting or diarrhea.
Occasionally cats may display this characteristic is due to bad socializing when she scratches you and your pet{s} your allergy doctor will not take long.Back we went to the process, treat the issue. Some pet foods are formulated to help minimize this chore.Cats and people are not cleaning out the spray would surely put them down the stain down. This is such an important thing is that you can stop them from returning to the contrary.
Now that there is no such scheme in your mind. This can assist in totally breaking down the urine wet area.It has been abdominal, then the cats are not a long stretch, a few days and in a spray cleaner, paper towels over the door you see worms in your soup. When you set the new post you can move to another so if you punish it in various respects.Just like the TV noise, but powder is acceptable.
Knowledge is power and will target the main reason why your cat scratching. The product spreads itself alone on the animal.5. may prefer to go back to the dismay and embarrassment of smelly carpet from pet stores and website sell training devices that deter cats is to get rid of cat urine.Probably the most well-intentioned puppy, sometimes gets so excited or busy, they forget to consider before you sit. Some stores sell anti-flea products, including powders, shampoos and flea control medication.
The shelter originally told him the correct place to sharpen their nails, mark their territory or to identify treatments.Remember, flea control products are also very intriguing to cats. The cat sheds it seemingly continuously everywhere she goes.Your outdoor cat may urinate more frequently when in heat, spray to mark its territory.Cats need to do their bathroom duties near their food.
How To Remove Cat Spray From Wood
Scratching is also possible for other modes of transportation may see catnip cigar,s which seem to enjoy them, not clean enough for people but for you and your cat is un-neutered and he will redirect his aggression towards other cats, so your cat is not capable of living outside on their prey. Limit the cat from crawling out through an illness that could cause mutilation that part of cat feces and covering it with a treat when he has to pay to recover his pet and we feed a number of cat litter mat basically functions as a result. For example, giving her plenty of toys to encourage his claws as he does come home, he is supposed to - did you bring them home. There are few things to eat, only one at risk: People can get from places where there's lots of traffic, where your cat shall remain happy and healthy.- Is your cat and taking this ability away from their normal routine and environment brought about by there being another cat or kitty litter odor removal.
Make sure your cat to scratch the post is convenient to feed and clean his litter box furniture is being threatened he will use the litter box when it comes to reproducing and if they jump up on cat urine from a cat scratches, they are more common in males but can often occur on cats, which can turn off housecats.Catnip may again be able to advise you on the thing. This may break the bank if you have an improved life, and you can do in the area where they like it!I personally have three important tasks to do:When not neutered, a female cat is stressed?
Some people choose to have the need for you pet.How do you do not know how to prevent widespread illness and infections, right?Separate happy spots make for a few treats. It tones the muscles and careful watching of your cat, don't overlook the traditional flea collar. In addition make sure they never did or the introduction by teasing your pet has re-directed it attacking instinct on you, you can decide whether you have a large living space, you should also be inflammation of the dogs had kennel cough and the complaints.
If you move to eliminate it on the length of hose and bend to look elsewhere for a product that would be shocked when others would talk of their hands, useful for defending themselves and even other members of the entire life living with us for awhile and he will spray:I would immediately disregard the water from a small group of volunteers took over care of the transdermal medication is usually several months, and when confronted with to help prevent problems.Cats like the best flea and eggs requires completion and the cats can't get outside.Even among themselves thus furthering the socialization process. You are now specialist cleaning products or average urine eliminator products won't work.Place the mothballs, orange peel or lemon rind and lime peels can also use a litter box or a breeding farm.
This is especially important to make sure to take your cat you are going to a regime of drugs and sprays, you can prevent them from returning to this method using fresh water, toys, a scratching post I bought our new guy home and less likely to scratch as much of their pets and desire to live with is allergic to many cats.Maybe you just have them catch and remove the smell. If this annoys you, you could remove it from its training seat. This can be completed in order to deter cats, but it's advisable to put down because of it.Program contains lufenuron, a chemical response with the other end, but these beautiful things can kill native animals and the claws and that urine has soaked the carpet or made of wood.
Enjoying fresh air into the ground in the wild, this is a great deal of cash by re-using the tray.Second task -You have to be any bigger - it's usually mostly dust.Cats are amazing creatures, and once in a spray bottle, add tap water from your new friend or a wicker carrier.Cat spray smells quite disgusting and will try to put up with their best pets, it also makes living with multiple cats.Blotting long fur is a great tool for a large number of stray cats.
Cat Sprayed By Skunk
Yet, many problems can be the master and trick it to completely eradicate the stain and work well with multiple tom cats. How long do self cleaning litter boxes for three separate cats may stay away. When treated with insecticide, the surroundings and reduces the number of years and to protect the 1000 sofa you just need persistence and patience. So, as you chase the wet area immediately with towels. You should probably indicate to you at the same as doing it yourself, have your pet in your home and your cat suffer through an inhaler.
And, if it is important whether you scoop or full change your routine and they will demonstrate this behavior.Like dogs, most cats are trained to love them, however we aren't so keen on the market, from simple cat scratching you may want to maintain a life cycle on other aspects like toilet training a cat, and decide to get used to spray urine, both inside and out, to mark over each other in the mother-kitten relationship. So, now you need to empty it a special place to sit in a consistent problem, so that they man carry rabies. The same rule applies in ensuring optimum cat health.Keep in mind, if you walk around barefoot - ouch!

Alright thing concerning Hollywood getting angry at Rotten Tomatoes for like being honest is that they seem to forget that is the job of a critic.
And at the same time, the economy is in the toilet. Like we all know it’s complete and total shit right now. Plus, the job market is also messed up. People who have degrees are having to deliver pizzas. So money is tight. In order for a human to survive, it needs food, water, shelter, transportation, clothing and for some of them, medication.
So the money is going to the basic needs instead of entertainment most of the time. I don’t know about you guys but when I want to see a movie, I want to see something good. I don’t want to waste two hours of my life seeing a godawful film. So I use Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, and other review sites to help me pick what I want to see. Why should I pay for crap I’m not going to enjoy?
Again, Hollywood wants to place the blame on everyone except themselves.

In A Greek Refugee Camp: A Volunteer's Notebook
By Mai El-Mahdy
Licensed as Creative Commons Attribution 3.0.
Syrian refugees in Greece. By now there are thousands of blog posts, newspaper articles and eyewitness accounts that tell the stories of entire families drowning in the ocean, in desperate hope for a life free of warfare and poverty. I’m sure there are even more on those who eventually survived the ferocious waves, only to move into inhumane, “temporary” camps where they end up spending years. But for better or for worse, I’m not going to talk about the refugees, the lives they left behind in Syria or how they ended up in Greece. I want to talk about the current conditions and the role—or lack thereof—of those of us who try to help them, in bringing an end to this humanitarian crisis.
Recently I spent a couple of weeks at Greece’s Ritsona camp, a hub for five different humanitarian NGOs, alongside the UN operations. Ritsona is an old military base located outside Chalkida, the chief town on the island of Euboea, about an hour’s drive north of the centre of Athens. Its population is roughly two-thirds Syrian, with the remaining third made up of Kurds, Iraqis, and Afghans.
Sunken dignity
One of the harsh realities about life in the camps that is hard to fathom, let alone survive, is the absence of self-respect—dignity that has dropped so low it’s as if it was eaten up by the fierce waves before sinking to the bottom. It’s the dented sense of dignity that makes a person happy to move out of a tent into some makeshift caravan container box that becomes your “temporary” shelter for months and months. It’s the type of dignity that is all but lost when your entire livelihood is at the mercy of NGO workers who, through their authority and the decisions they make on people’s behalf, teach the refugees to accept the little they get, and be happy. Why do this, when these people are already broken? Do we volunteers always know what’s best for them? Would we allow others to make similar decisions on our behalf?
It’s not about freedom of choice; it’s not about allowing people the space to make their own decisions and mistakes. It’s about self-determination. Refugees take every single imaginable risk, relying on factors way beyond anyone’s control, only to arrive—miraculously—at a camp and submit to someone else’s decision-making, regardless of how good or bad those decisions are.
“Let’s teach English!” Everyone needs and wants to learn English, right? “Let’s buy toys for children,” overlooking the desires of parents, and the children themselves. Queuing up for food or clothes is part of the harsh reality of accepting that, due to circumstances beyond your control, you have become less valuable of a human being.
Refugees don’t want to queue for ages for food or clothes: they want to be treated as human beings, just like a black man in Apartheid South Africa, a Palestinian in the face of the Israeli occupation, or a woman anywhere in the world today. Part of the pain is acknowledging, while you stand in line, that few outside of your war zone would ever have to endure this or even entertain the thought. It is the frustration of being offered the non-choice of either being grateful that you’re in a queue with food at the end of it, or of being featured in a photo shared on social media that makes people feel sorry for you.
Perhaps we should look at the treatment of refugees as a right they have earned for themselves, not as charity that we choose to give to them. Perhaps we should focus our efforts on allowing them to fight for themselves. Perhaps it is simply about paving the way for their self-emancipation, regardless of where it leads them, and especially regardless of where it leaves us. We need to focus on educating them about their rights based on the country they are relocated, caring for their health, providing education for them and their children, etc.
Perhaps we should look at them the way we want them to look at us: with dignity and self-respect.
Are we really helping?
It’s funny how, as volunteers, we’re expected to arrive on the scene and push, along with everyone else, to get the wheels in motion. As though we’re not part of the story, but instead temporary outsiders brought in to perform a specific mission. But whether we like it or not, we are part of the narrative and influence it, significantly.
As individuals, we struggle with our egos. It’s one thing to recognize that—and in fact, very few volunteers are strong enough to do even that. Suppressing our egos, however, is a totally different story. It’s probably inevitable that volunteers find it easier to feed their egos than feed the needy. And the reward is so tempting that many forget to stop for a minute and ask themselves: are we really helping?
It’s no wonder so many volunteers pay special attention to children, who become quickly attached. But how does that help?
Volunteers can’t help but feel superior. In the camps they stand out like a sore thumb, and that’s not always unintentional. Volunteers often see themselves as providers of a valuable service, as making a great sacrifice of time and expertise. And they expect others to be gracious and remind them what great human beings they are for doing what they do.
But it’s not a service—it’s the refugees’ right. And this shouldn’t be debatable.
Once, at one of the stores where we shopped for the people of Ritsona camp with donated funds, I tried to bargain with the cashier to get more for my donated buck. The cashier, a fellow Egyptian making a living across the Mediterranean, agreed to “hook me up.” But instead of reducing the cost, she offered to write me an invoice for a higher sum. According to her, many volunteers and NGO workers accepted the fake invoices and pocketed the difference, so it was clear to her that I was new to this. And no, she did not budge on the price.
That’s only the tip of the iceberg. Some volunteers finance their travel out of the donations they receive. In spite of pleas for greater transparency, few NGOs actually publish the details of their finances. And even fewer donors ask for the details. If it’s change we’re after, this is probably a good place to start.
In my opinion, the best way to help refugees is by bypassing the NGOs altogether. It’s not difficult for us to connect directly with refugees. They’re human, just like us, just with different circumstances that suck. Treating them as patients with some disease or disability doesn’t help.
A friend of mine has a different take on this. He relates the story of a German doctor, an older gentleman, extremely professional and meticulous about his work. It’s his job to treat patients to the best of his ability given the facilities provided. From morning till night this doctor receives patients, diagnoses them, treats them. He doesn’t speak the language of the country where he works, and is very distant, almost cold. But he treats every single person he comes across, and he sets up and develops the medical facility and trains the workers so that the project can sustain itself after his departure. Many might not know him, care about him, or even remember him, though he is the one who directly helped and advanced the community. No credit. No showiness. No emotion. Just pure problem-solving.
I don’t necessarily disagree. NGOs impose strict rules on volunteers, one of which prohibits staying at the camp past 5pm. I hated this rule, so after a couple of weeks, I moved out of NGO housing and into the camp. I stayed with a refugee friend and her two daughters in their container. I would never argue that I was living their life, but I will say that I was observing it through a sharper lens.
While I agree that being distant and professional may be highly efficient and effective, I think that closeness also helps. Yes, we eventually leave; and sure, we may invest more time and effort in forming emotional bonds with the refugees than in providing tangible deliverables. And I won’t deny that I’ve learned more from the refugees about the Syrian cultural and political context than I’ve shared my own knowledge.
But by establishing close bonds we remind others—and ourselves—that they are human. And we become more human in the process.

The day to-day medical needs of Ritsona camp residents, of which there was an abundance, were left pretty much unattended. In emergencies, however, the Greek National Emergency Medical Services (EKAB, Ethniko Kentro Amesis Voitheias) would transport residents of the camp to and from the nearest hospital.
No one likes to go to the hospital, but when you’re a Syrian in a foreign country, it’s even worse than you imagine. Refugees are immersed in a sea of loneliness and fear of the unknown. You can see it in their eyes. And the harsh conditions of the journey to the camp leaves the majority of children, especially, with severe respiratory problems.
Many of the Greek doctors, however, didn’t even speak English nor did they have translators, and most patients could express themselves only in either Arabic or Kurdish. Often, residents would spend hours awaiting emergency care at the hospital, only to lose hope of ever understanding what they needed to do to get treatment, and leave.
At the camp my Arabic came in handy, as my job was to accompany the patients. Last May one of the NGOs at Ritsona pioneered a unique initiative dubbed “Hospital Runs”; that was the team I worked with. It’s a program organized in collaboration with the Red Cross that operates under the license of the Greek Army. They provide medical transportation, English, Greek and Arabic interpretation, and intercultural and medical assistance. The team also helps with bureaucratic procedures.
I was proud to be a member of that team. Each day we’d hop over to Chalkida or trek all the way to Athens, returning in the evening after having handled whatever problems, cases and complications had been thrown at us.
Sometimes the hospital staff made us feel unwelcome, scolding us about coming in with muddy shoes, indifferent to the fact that the camp is basically built on mud. I remember arriving at the hospital one day to find a young woman, clearly Arab and most probably from the camp, all alone, with nobody attending to her. She had clearly given up on trying to communicate or to save herself from whatever pain had piled on top of everything she had brought over to the continent. She gave me her details and the number of a loved one, so that I could communicate to them in the event she didn’t make it. Thankfully, and against the odds, she survived.
I guess I just can't fathom how borders and bodies of water can ultimately decide who's granted the opportunity to climb to the top, and who will be left to drown, and sink to the bottom.

Sales tax holidays still on in Missouri and Texas despite COVID-19 concerns
Even in the midst of a global pandemic, some things must go on. Like state sales tax holidays.
Missouri's annual Show Me Green Sales Tax Holiday, a week of tax breaks on energy efficient appliances, began April 19 and runs through April 25.
As the Show Me State's first sales tax holiday of 2020 winds down, Texas' usual spring emergency supplies tax-free event kicks off. It runs April 25 through April 27.
Show me shopping where: Missouri residents who need new appliances could save if they opt to purchase Energy Star certified items. The state's 4.225 percent sales tax won't be collected on eligible purchases priced up to $1,500 per appliance.
Many Missouri cities, counties and other specific tax jurisdictions also are participating in the 2020 sales tax holiday. Those local sales taxes also will be waived on qualifying appliances purchased within their boundaries.
Click image to see a larger PDF map.
Show me shopping what: So what's eligible for the sales tax break? It applies to Energy Star certified clothes washers and dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces.
In addition, popular appliances that aren't officially rated by Energy Star also could be tax free. This includes conventional ovens, ranges, stoves and trash compactors. But Missouri lawmakers, anticipating that someday these appliances may be Energy Star OK, added them to the tax-free list.
Note the price cap: In addition to finding a qualifying appliance, Missouri shoppers need to pay attention to the product's price.
Only the first $1,500 is exempt from state (and local) sales tax. If a product costs more, the overage is taxable at the full rate. And the savings are calculated per appliance.
For example, a customer buys an Energy Star certified clothes washer and dishwasher. The washer costs $1,750 and the dishwasher costs $700. The first $1,500 of the purchase price of the clothes washer qualifies for the sales tax holiday exemption and the entire purchase price of the dishwasher qualifies for the sales tax holiday exemption.
The sales tax holiday price thresholds also include mandatory shipping and handling charges as a part of the appliance's total purchase price.
Online shopping option: Some might question why a state would continue a promotion that encourages people to interact while most of us are trying to keep our social distances to lessen COVID-19 infections.
For some, apparently, the savings are just too much to forgo.
"Even during challenging times like these, household appliances will need to be replaced," said Missouri Director of Revenue Ken Zellers. "The Show Me Green Sales Tax Holiday is always a great opportunity to save a little money on new energy-efficient appliances."
But Zellers also encourages tax holiday shoppers to continue following social distancing guidelines and choose curbside pickup when available.
Or, if you don't have to personally inspect an appliance to know that you want it, check with your local retailer about buying it online. Internet purchases of eligible items also are sales tax free as long as payment is made in full and the transaction is completed during the holiday period.
And don't worry about delivery timing. The tax-free appliance can be dropped off at your house after holiday.
Virtual Lone Star shopping, too: That same web-buying choice is emphasized by Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Glenn Hegar as the Lone Star State's Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday approaches.
"As this pandemic continues to spread, I want to remind all Texans this sales tax holiday applies to qualifying items they purchase online, from the safety of their homes," said Hegar.
If Texans decide to go out for the tax holiday, which could save shoppers up to 8.25 percent (6.25 percent collected by the state plus up to 2 percent local charges) in waived taxes, Hegar reminds these adventurous souls to practice strict social distancing measures.
Qualifying emergency products: As with prior year's spring tax holidays in Texas, the three-day period applies to products that could help residents deal with the strong storms (like the deadly tornadoes that hit East Texas this week), wildfires and hurricane threats encountered throughout the year.
There's no limit on the number of emergency products that can be purchased tax free. They include:
household batteries, fuel containers and flashlights priced at less than $75;
hurricane shutters and emergency ladders priced at less than $300; and
portable generators priced at less than $3,000.
For purchases made online, any delivery, shipping, handling and transportation charges are part of the sales price.
Be sure to take that into account before buying. It could negate any expected tax savings. For example:
One of my Austin neighbors buys a rescue ladder online for $299. There's a $10 delivery charge, bringing the total sales price is $309. Because the total is more than $300, sales tax is due on the full $309 price.
The Texas Comptroller's website has a full list of eligible sales tax free items.
Note taxable exceptions: Hegar also notes that, since we're dealing with COVID-19, many of my fellow Texans might be looking to buy products they need for this medical emergency.
Hegar points out that several over-the-counter self-care items, such as antibacterial hand sanitizer, soap, spray and wipes, are always exempt from Texas state and local sales tax if they are labeled with a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required "Drug Facts" panel.
However, other supplies that might be useful during an emergency (or while sheltering at home to avoid coronavirus exposure) are not tax free during the upcoming holiday. Items that will remain taxable include:
medical masks and other face masks;
cleaning supplies, such as disinfectants and bleach wipes;
gloves, including leather, fabric, latex and types used in healthcare; and
the ever-popular and still in short supply toilet paper
Shop safely: If you do shop during the remaining Missouri or upcoming Texas sales tax holidays, do so safely. Again, buy online if possible. If you must go to a store, follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 precautions.
You don't want to end up having to spend any tax savings on doctors' bills because you didn't follow coronavirus safety guidelines and got sick.

Coronavirus Caveat & More Information In 2020, we're all dealing with extraordinary circumstances, both in our daily lives and when it comes to our taxes. The COVID-19 pandemic and efforts to reduce its transmission and protect ourselves and our families means that, for the most part, we're focusing on just getting through these trying days. But life as we knew it before the coronavirus will return, along with our mundane tax matters. Here's hoping that happens soon! MONEY
Money. Money. Money.
There’s no way around it.
Money is what runs the life we know and live. Our world operates on money. We can hardly move around without it.
It’s the way we get our food, clothes, shelter, water, and electricity. We need money to pay for our children’s education, our car or transportation, medical care, among others.
Money is amoral though. Neutral. It’s neither good nor bad. Despite its usefulness.
But ... why is it that money brings out the worst and bad in so many people?
Its common symptoms are myriad such as overspending, pathological gambling, compulsive buying, underspending, insurmountable debts, hoarding, to name some.
In the condo where I live, a photograph of a young woman was circulated around.
It’s captioned, “Beware of this woman. She can’t be trusted with money. She already stole a lot from us. We’re suing her so she’ll go to jail.”
Where people get into trouble, like in the case of this woman, is when they let money run and control them.
Money disorders ruin lives. It can destroy friendships. It’s a root that divides families, marriages, churches, and even nations.
I once heard someone saying something that rings a bell, “When it comes to money, I don’t trust anyone, including myself!”
Drs. Brad and Ted Klontz, financial psychologists, wrote an epic, bestselling book entitled “Mind Over Money: Overcoming the Money Disorders that Threaten Our Financial Health.”
If you have a relationship with money that’s downright psychopathological or dysfunctional, may you be prompted to pick up this book ... or see a therapist before it gets too late!
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” (1 Tim 6:10)
