👫 - liying & jisang
👫for four (minimum) headcanons I have about our muse’s relationship with @spaceny
Tumblr media

Just finished The Story of Minglan
So I just finished the Song Dynasty drama The Story of Minglan with Zhao Liying and Feng Shaofeng in the main roles after binge watching it for a little under a week now. I actually had started it months and months ago but after watching the first few episodes, I noticed immediately that it was going to be a heavy and serious drama and i wasn’t in the right place of mind at the time to deal with it.
But here we are now, after having watched all 73 episodes of this masterpiece. Because that’s my main take away after finishing it : a masterpiece.
There’s a few things that i could nitpick if i really wanted to go into details, but most of them are just scenes i wish we saw more of, and nothing that really changed how the story was told.
First I’ll begin to say that it’s evident this drama was written by women. The harshness of what it means to be a woman in a patriarcal society is depicted so well. And all the women characters are complex and vivid and absent of stereotypes and archetypes. Yes you hate some of them for their actions, and behaviours, but you also understand how they came to become what they are. The stories around divorce and dowry and marriage but also jealousy and ambition and women’s relationship to one another is so central and so vivid, it makes me ache for every single one of them.
Less obvious but to me very much present and commented upon is the treatment of slaves vs the aristocracy, and mroe generally, the way class intersects with women circumstances, even within the lower gentry. I feel like that’s a subject that’s not often touched with historical dramas and here it definitely felt lke the scriptwriters thought about it.
I’ll also point out how fleshed out the relationships between the characters are, all of them. There are no relationships that are just flat and dont make sense or are ignored for the sake of the story. No, everything, every relations is accouted for and you understand how these relations shape the characters.
The male characters are also incredibly well written. Many of them misogynistic, as you’ll expect men from this era to be, but it never feels as if it’s put there just for the plot to advance. No, it makes sense, and each men has its own flavor of it, even the good ones.
The relationship between the man lead and the woman lead is so delectable. At first i didnt really ship them, as we had anoher love interest for Minglan, but Gu Tingye grew on me, just as he grew on Minglan, and I understood why she would love him so. I like that they have a relationships of equals and that despite his scheming, she is his match. In my memory, the only other relationship that grew on me like that in cdramas is Fuyao and Wuji from Legend of Fuyao, where at first I didnt like the ML, but he grew on me.
Which leads me to the acting, which is just so excellent. Zhao Liying is incredible, as she always is, but it’s also really nice to see how she changes Minglan’s posture and facial expressions as she grows. The chemistry between the two lead is just amazing, but so is the entire cast. The Sheng family dynamic is so realistic, you can always feel the tension. Special mention to Zhu Yilong and his gorgeous smile and puppy eyes.
I need to give extra props to the set designing team, and especially the lighting team. I read that they tried to use as many candles as possible to avoid using too much modern lighting, and it’s really appreciated, bc the scenes that happened at night indoors are always well lit (especially in contrast to GoT which is my reference in terms of low-use of modern lighting). In general the sets are very colourful and distinctive, and you can feel the changing atmosphere in the different houses and rooms reflecting the nature of the characters occupying them.
That brings me to the costuming, which I admit i have very little knowledge on Song Dynasty fashion, but I like that it was colourful, that they used the costume to describe the passing of seasons and that each character had their own distinct styles, colours and evolutions.
Overall, I woulld 100% recommend this drama, it’s now definitely in my top 3 cdramas alongside Nirvana in Fire and Joy of Life (even if I cant give a ranking within those three).
As for the few things I would nitpick, they would be 1) Rong’er relationship with her little brothers. How she dealt with the grief of Chang’er, and how she deals with Tuan and how that affects her relationship with Minglan. 2) The relationships with the Sheng sisters at the end. The ending scene seems to suggest that they made peace but I would have liked a scene before, with all three (Hualan wasn’t a part of their dispute) of them talking about how much of a shitty father they have. 3) More happy scenes with Gu Tingye & Sheng Minglan. Maybe it’s bc im a romantic at heart but I just wanted a little bit more scenes of them together, they spend so much time apart T.T
To end things, this drama needs more people to watch it and more people to write fanfiction for it!

1997
IT'S IRELAND TIME. well, not quite yet. but it is in that this is the last time they hosted the contest and also they scored second.
Cyprus Not bad & not a bad start. I don't have too much to say about it beyond the fact that I don't think it's bad. It's simultaneously very 90s Eurovision while also, I feel, laying the groundwork for the 00s entries to come. I've definitely heard bits of the chorus in compilation videos before.
Turkey Whoa, that was NOT how I was expecting the verses to sound based on that chorus. But they're really beautiful. S,ebnem knows how to use her voice and sings in a way that makes her ring through the arena, almost, I can almost hear it, during those gorgeously empty sections where it's just her and the drum. Maybe I might have my year winner already. This is GOOD. She looks good, she sounds good.
Norway I like a lot of the more upbeat country from this era, and there are parts of this that I like - like the harmonies and everyone playing the guitars. But it's not clicking. I don't think I like his voice, and for some reason my brain keeps trying to parse the Norwegian phrases as English and that's confusing me. Although that's not really the guy's fault.
Austria Loving the dance routine. It's well-executed and fitting to the song. She sounds good, too. Although, I don't love the outfits, and... I feel terrible for saying this but Bettina just looks old. She looks like a helicopter parent going to Zumba.
Ireland This song is just so 90s. I get why it scored well when it did, but I'm watching this from 2023, as someone who wasn't even born yet in 1997. It's SO of its time that I just cannot get into it. I bet my mom would like this song.
block ranking: Turkey > Cyprus > Austria > Norway > Ireland. this is a new thing i'm gonna try out for these 20+ song contests because I struggle with remembering everything and cut my watching into pomodoro-style blocks with breaks in between (i'm gonna go make some tea before SLO->ESP).
Slovenia It's just poorly constructed. I don't like the way the notes fit together.
Switzerland This, by contrast, is an alright song (backing singers did well!) but I dislike Barbara's voice a great deal.
Netherlands Yall know I love a good girl band. This is, at least, a middle of the road girl band. They're clearly having fun and I vibe with the verses (especially the last phrase before the chorus in each verse), and the chord progressions. However, the rhythm of the title lyric goes too quickly. This one also falls victim to the "too many wide shots" thing that absolutely drives me crazy.
Italy Alright, so one of the things I've noticed lately, singing in a barbershop quartet format (this is relevant, bear with me), is that head voice is a lot harder to tune, especially when vibrato slips in. This woman has that problem. She sounds good, but she's also above the rest of the music, just slightly. Also the beginning was weird and took me by surprise for some reason. Everything else was pretty good, though. Not my fave song ever but a solid 90s entry.
Spain And this one just bores me to tears. No personality to it. Sorry, Spain.
Block ranking: Italy > Netherlands > Slovenia > Switzerland > Spain.
Germany Conflicting feelings here. I enjoyed it, but also it feels dated, but also the beginning of the chorus is really good, but also I'm not sure if I like her voice or not, but also that outfit is queer af by today's standards and I kind of love it.
Poland Chorus is a little messy, but the song feels original and it has the perfect amount of sass for a song titled, if I'm understanding the Polish correctly, "But I Am". I love it. My only real complaint is that if the lady from Jalisse was slightly over the notes, Anna Maria is slightly under them.
Estonia This is a lovely subtle song, and Maarja-Liis Ilus has a sweet, very young sounding voice that is satisfying to me personally. However this is slightly to her detriment, because I feel like she kept trying to be just a little bit sexy and it just didn't work because she sounds like a seventeen year old trying to be sexy.
B&H I love love love the instrumental in these verses. They give me the vibes of the Yael Naim, Ingrid Michaelson type music I listened to in middle school. However with an instrumental like that the singer, I feel, needs to be a little smoother in tone (like Ingrid Michaelson or Yael Naim). And the chorus didn't fit with that instrumental at all. I was really enjoying it until the chorus kicked in and then suddenly it was a totally different vibe.
Portugal Distracted entirely by the fact that her backup singers are straight out of The Matrix.
Block ranking: Poland > Estonia > Germany > B&H > Portugal.
Sweden It's just kinda frenetic. It doesn't fit together and the rhythms in the instrumental are too fast. It's really not bad but... idk. Maybe i'm only saying that it's not bad because I have a certain affection for Swedish entries before their "scary success" era.
Greece The return of the hand cymbals! Eh, this one's okay. It's very Greek.
Malta Very pretty song, although she does run into the lady from Jalisse's head voice issue a couple of times herself. Or maybe her head voice is just a little shrill timbre-wise and that's just how my tired headache-having brain is interpreting it rn lol. But that dress though. Barbara Dex much?
Hungary While "Hungary goes Backstreet" is already not really my thing, this entry is further sunk by the fact that none of these guys are particularly great singers. I'll give them this, though: there's a cool shot in here where the singers are shot from behind and you can see the audience and a light kinda runs over the spectators. That looked pretty cool.
Russia Russia almost never sends things like this. But then again, this was fairly early in their participation, wasn't it. While it's not my speed, Alla definitely embodies the Primadonna title. She carries herself just like an aging leading lady. A good fit for the song.
Block ranking: Greece > Russia > Malta > Sweden > Hungary
Denmark We didn't need this. It sounds okay but like. Listen. Okay, these days I'm less of a hater of rap in Eurovision, but that's also because it's gotten better over the years. This 40something Danish man I don't think knows really how to rap well. And the dancers and the school aesthetic were def too much.
France It doesn't leave much of an impression, although I do enjoy listening to it. Mostly what I get out of this is that the singer is very young.
Croatia Heavy sigh. It's a no from me. They don't sound great, the outfits suck, and I'm no huge fan of [rifles through genres they used on Produce 101] new jack swing? Is that what this is?
UK It ain't no Walking On Sunshine, but it's still damn good. There's just this swell to it, this movement and push and growth, that feels like it's getting the song's message across. There's something in the composition that, when you listen to it, feels like love.
Iceland Gay rights I guess? Vampire rights also? It's so Eurodance (which I don't really like) and the mixing was off, I can't hear him very well. But gay rights, I guess.
ok sorter time!!!
My top 25 1)Turkey 2)Poland 3)UK 4)Italy 5)Germany 6)Cyprus 7)Estonia 8)Netherlands 9)Russia 10)Greece 11)Ireland 12)Norway 13)France 14)Switzerland 15)Malta 16)Austria 17)B&H 18)Slovenia 19)Portugal 20)Spain 21)Sweden 22)Iceland 23)Hungary 24)Denmark 25)Croatia
Miscellaneous thoughts I really enjoy the messages from past winners and other contestants that they played after every other performance. Best one was probably Niamh Kavanagh telling Linda Martin, "it's your fault, you started it" and Linda responding, "well, you gave them the heart attack the next year." Obsessed with how messy that winner's recap was. Katrina got the words wrong! The tambourines were off rhythm! It was endearing. I also love how multilingual this contest was. Not only English and French but a solid amount of Irish in there. I suspect we'll see less and less English as we go further back in time.

He sure has been/ is, if the melon is true, making a lot of contemporary dramas lately. I would love to see him in a republican era drama but I guess that's still not meant to be. I'm not the biggest fan of most contemporaries and even though I will watch the hell out of everything that he is in, I just want my gorgeous republican era 少爷 Xiao Zhan.
I'd love for XZ to work in a republican drama! I would love that sooo very much :) But those cakes are difficult to get...depending on the IP, it usually goes to the actors eho have proven in this genre already, or with the right connections.
Right now there's many republican edits (mostly XZ in the stripe suit from Bamboo song) and opposite being either Reba, Zhao Liying or YZ.
I'll try upload some edits next time I see them.
I'm actually not surprised XZ wanting to do more contemporary, if I recall one of the biggest feedback after OOL released was XZ team was happy with the results. He had gained almost 1M plus new fans while drama was on air. His highest fan increased was 80k fans in one day, mind you this is quite a low budget drama in "not so popular" time of the year. And it's still higher than Ace Troops and Douluo combined, which is really cool.
Ans tbh I'm glad the tone of this new drama isn't too serious, people do enjoy light hearted dramas a lot. Both 'Where Dreams Begin' and 'Longest Promise' seems to be quite emotionally heavy.
I think it will be ok 👍 👌 and Bai Baihe is so pretty!!!! Noona/elder sis dramas always have its own audience.

"The Malleus Maleficarum of Heinrich Kramer and James Sprenger" Translated by Montague Summers
For nearly three centuries Malleus Maleficarum (The Witches’ Hammer) was the professional manual for witch hunters. This work by two of the most famous Inquisitors of the age is still a document of the force of that era’s beliefs. Under a Bull of Pope Innocent VIII, Kramer and Sprenger exposed the heresy of those who did not believe in witches and set forth the proper order of the world with devils, witches, and the will of God. Even if you do not believe in witchcraft, the world of 1484 did. Contemporary cases illustrate methods by which witches attempt to control and subvert the world: How and why women roast their first-born male child; the confession of how to raise a tempest by a washwoman suspended “hardly clear of the ground” by her thumbs; methods of making a formal pact with the Devil; how witches deprive men of their vital member; and many others. Methods of destroying and curing witchcraft, such as remedies against incubus and succubus devils, are exemplified and weighted by the authors. Formal rules for initiating a process of justice are set down: how it should be conducted and the method of pronouncing sentence; when to use the trial by the red-hot iron; how the prosecutor should protect himself; how the body is to be shaved and searched for tokens and amulets, including those sewn under the skin. As Summers says, it was the casebook on every magistrate’s desk. Montague Summers has given a very sympathetic translation. His two introductions are filled with examples of witchcraft and the historical importance of Malleus Maleficarum. This famous document should interest the historian, the student of witchcraft and the occult, and the psychologist who is interested in the medieval mind as it was confronted with various forces which could be explained only by witchcraft. Unabridged republication of the 1928 edition. Introduction to the 1948 edition is also included. Translation, notes, and two introductions by Montague Summers. A Bull of Innocent VIII. xlv + 278pp. 6 5/8 x 10. Paperbound.

Breaking the Internet: Memorable Moments in Social Sports History
The intersection of sports and social media has given rise to a new era where iconic moments don't just unfold on the field but reverberate across the internet, creating a digital tapestry of shared experiences. From jaw-dropping plays to heartwarming celebrations, this article delves into the memorable moments that have broken the internet, shaping the landscape of 2up social sports history.
The LeBron James Block (2016 NBA Finals)
In Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals, LeBron James delivered one of the most memorable plays in basketball history. With less than two minutes remaining, the Cleveland Cavaliers were clinging to a slim lead. In a pivotal moment, LeBron executed a chase-down block on Andre Iguodala's layup attempt, a feat that not only solidified his legacy but also sent shockwaves across social media. The replay of the block flooded timelines, sparking hashtags and memes that celebrated LeBron's athleticism and determination, breaking the internet with a collective gasp from fans worldwide.
The "Philly Special" (Super Bowl LII)
Super Bowl LII gave us the "Philly Special," a trick play executed to perfection by the Philadelphia Eagles. In a moment that epitomized the underdog spirit, quarterback Nick Foles caught a touchdown pass in a bold and unexpected move. The sheer audacity of the play captured the hearts of fans, and social media erupted with GIFs, memes, and celebratory posts. The "Philly Special" not only secured a historic Super Bowl win for the Eagles but also etched its place in the annals of internet-breaking sports moments.
Tumblr media
Usain Bolt's Lightning Pose (2016 Olympics)
Usain Bolt, the fastest man on the planet, not only dominated the track but also became a social media sensation. During the 2016 Rio Olympics, a photograph of Bolt smiling for the camera while leading in the 100m semifinals went viral. The image, now famously known as the "Lightning Pose," encapsulated Bolt's charisma and dominance. Social media platforms were flooded with memes and recreations of the pose, showcasing the global appeal and influence of social sports moments that transcend national borders.
The "Hand of God" Goal (1986 FIFA World Cup)
While not a product of the digital age, Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" goal during the 1986 FIFA World Cup remains a timeless moment in sports history. In an era before social media, this iconic incident sparked debates and discussions globally. If it happened today, the internet would undoubtedly break under the weight of memes, reactions, and analyses. Maradona's audacious handball goal and subsequent solo run, both celebrated and controversial, exemplify the lasting impact of sports moments that transcend generations.
Kobe Bryant's Farewell Game (2016)
In his final NBA game, Kobe Bryant put on a performance for the ages. Scoring an astonishing 60 points against the Utah Jazz, Bryant bid farewell to his illustrious career in a manner that captivated fans and broke the internet. Social media platforms overflowed with tributes, highlights, and emotional messages from fans, fellow athletes, and celebrities. The hashtag #MambaOut trended globally, underscoring the power of social media to unite fans in celebrating the legacy of a basketball icon.
The "Handshake Game" (2017 NBA Playoffs)
In the 2017 NBA Playoffs, the Cleveland Cavaliers faced off against the Boston Celtics in a highly anticipated matchup. What ensued became known as the "Handshake Game." As the Cavaliers dominated the Celtics on the court, LeBron James and his teammates celebrated by creating elaborate, synchronized handshakes. This seemingly spontaneous display of camaraderie went viral, with fans attempting to replicate the handshakes and turning the Cavaliers' celebrations into internet memes and gifs, showcasing the lighter side of social sports moments.
Serena Williams' 23rd Grand Slam Victory (2017 Australian Open)
Serena Williams' record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam victory at the 2017 Australian Open was a moment of historic significance. Her triumph, coupled with the fact that she was pregnant during the tournament, resonated beyond the tennis court. Social media erupted with messages of congratulations, admiration, and empowerment. Williams' post-match Snapchat photo showing her baby bump added a personal touch to the historic moment, amplifying the emotional impact and making it a standout in the realm of internet-breaking sports events.
Conclusion
In the age of social media, sports moments have transcended their immediate context, becoming cultural phenomena that break the internet. From jaw-dropping plays to heartwarming celebrations, these moments not only capture the essence of sports but also unite a global audience in shared experiences. As technology continues to evolve, we can only anticipate that the intersection of sports and social media will give rise to more iconic moments that reverberate across the digital landscape, shaping the narrative of social sports history for years to come.

"if only we could make this work between us." jisang&liying
OOPS... I HAVE A CRUSH ON YOU with @lvcdrms [aceitando]
Tumblr media
