Kara has gained a new family, but her past—seven long years of memories—is still lost to her. She’s recovered wiped memories before, but finding out who she truly was before Todd broke her may be much more difficult.

Connor tried to kill Markus the night of the revolution, but not of his own volition, and he cannot rest, literally, until he figures out how Amanda took control of him and finds a way to make sure it can never happen again.

Markus watched many fellow androids give their lives for a revolution he started, and that guilt has never really gone away. Now he wants to do what he was designed for: healing. If he can somehow, against all odds, help those closest to him—that’s even better.

Everyone’s searching for something. May they always find what they look for.

Hank’s sweating and shivering all over, sitting in the dark rocking back and forth a little in the armchair in the living room. He presses a fist to his mouth and swallows several times. "I've done this song and fucking dance a hundred times already! Why do you think I keep drinking, huh?"

"You drink because you want to die."

Hank laughs, a terrible wheezing sound without any humor in it. "Except I don't," he says. "I don't wanna die anymore, Connor, can you believe that? So I guess I gotta stop—killing myself." He shrugs, helpless. "You can check my vitals from across the room. If shit hits the fan, you could have an ambulance on the way before I hit the floor. You can keep an eye on me, make sure I don't fall off the wagon."

Connor walks over to the couch and sits down on the side closest to the armchair, hands clasped in front of him. "Tell me something," he says quietly. Hank won't like this question either, but it seems that tonight is a night for speaking plain. "What's the longest you've gone between drinks since Cole died?"

Hank sucks in a shuddering breath, and drags his hand down his face. It's too dark to make out his expression. Perhaps that's for the better. Connor would know: everyone has the right to a little privacy.

At last, when Hank has mastered himself, he says, "Two days, seven hours."

fighting off amanda through the power of my dad

LISTEN....i have been telling liz about an EXTREMELY niche dbh fic idea that started as a joke but i’m now completely obsessed with, which is a My Best Friend’s Exorcism homage about the “give up” ending with connor and amanda if north led the revolution

(i don’t think you’d need to read the book to understand the fic; you’d just have to know that MBFE is about the power of deep friendship fighting off demonic possession. which, like, amanda is close enough)

i’m putting the chat log under a cut mostly for my own later reference but also for all 2 of you who think this would be as AMAZING and ABSOLUTELY WORTHWHILE as i do

SeaTonic: the more i think about the "give up" ending where amanda takes control but you still get the hug scene, in addition to that one fic where connor is scribbling notes to try to get a message out, the more i kind of want like a "my best friend's exorcism" homage

SeaTonic: connor is suddenly the most popular boy in the precinct but he's mean to hank

SeaTonic: hank calls connor's brain to find him for something mundane and he hears connor from what sounds like a tinny connection in a snowstorm being like "hank??? hank where am i????"

bluejay: oh my god

SeaTonic: everyone wants to be part of his clique

bluejay: Connor passes up a chance to be a lil shit to Gavin and extends an olive branch instead

bluejay: Hank: where's my son

bluejay: who gets the biologically improbable tapeworm infestation

SeaTonic: i wish we knew more about these police officers. you could make it like jericho instead and it's a simsense addiction [NOTE: we are talking about these]

SeaTonic: connor's like "no this is cool and harmless"

bluejay: Ohhhh that could work really well, actually

SeaTonic: because taking down jericho from the INSIDE

bluejay: addiction to BTLs

SeaTonic: amanda's plan all along

bluejay: In that case, Hank could be the main character figure

bluejay: Alienated from the androids (who in this case actually have a good reason to be wary of him)

SeaTonic: so they don't believe him fully yeah

SeaTonic: connor's been feeding them hints that hank is like trying to control him and they're like "let us save you from the evil human my poor boy"

SeaTonic: but instead of passive-aggressively ignoring hank north almost murders him

SeaTonic: the problem with the my best friend's exorcism fic would be that in order to make it spin off from a canon ending you'd have to have all named jericho characters killed

SeaTonic: and connor would be too busy running the revolution to really interact with hank or other non-jericho people as much as i'd want

bluejay: What about deviant Connor dies in hold > rooftop fight with Hank > quasi-deviation and rejoins Jericho?

bluejay: that's definitely less perfect

bluejay: but, oh hey then the Jerichrew wouldn't know anything weird happened with Connor at all. he could've just showed up like "Cyberlife didn't realize I deviated so I came back and pretended you guys had killed me and escaped"

bluejay: "don't listen to that human saying something is weird with me, he's a dick"

SeaTonic: so you mean that when amanda tries to take him over in the crowd she succeeds but then doesn't make him shoot immediately?

bluejay: mm hm. so, it contradicts her canonical behavior, but I think you could spin it as an AU that's reasonably in line with her canon behavior

SeaTonic: kamski is the exorcist except instead of being a bumbling, earnest dude whose understanding of his role springs from the wrong place it'd be like "huh. well, guess this isn't working. my advice is to throw out the whole connor and get a new one. bye"

bluejay: "if my super good rA9 plan and backdoor didn't work, it must be over (shrugs)"

bluejay: if you do use a simsense angle, that could be a hint about the existence of the Zen Garden for Hank

bluejay: because it indicates that androids work in such a way that Cyberlife can replace their sensory input with VRtrap em in the fuckin Matrix

SeaTonic: yeah that makes sense, and i think i would have the accidental phone call to connor's soul before then too so all hank knows is a) connor is acting weird and b) he had a phone call where he sounded like he was in huge trouble but was apparently completely fine and unaware of the call when he finds him

SeaTonic: so he might be able to put that together with him knowing about simsense stuff

bluejay: maybe Hank played Shadowrun in college

bluejay: oh... Amanda is based on Kamski's real life mentor....so he probably gave her a lot of Amanda's personality, mannerisms, capabilities, etc and then it had all this other shit welded on top of it sloppily

bluejay: an Amanda that managed to defeat Deviant Connor might be the one being that could really fuck with Kamski's head

SeaTonic: incredible

bluejay: or even worse... what if he's not bothered by her

bluejay: Amanda didactically lecturing Kamski about how Deviant Connor failed and he's like "fascinating"

bluejay: maybe AI Amanda would be more fun and interesting to him than Deviant Connor at this point lmao

SeaTonic: god he's like "nope this isn't working, throw connor out, bye" and then amanda's like "i thought more of you, elijah" and he's like "...never mind, i'm keeping him. that's fine with you right hank. he's broken"

i havent drawn eliza’s family ever. here’s francis’ btw when he was younger

So of course, if i introduce a new parent it has to come with some backstory, duh. and like all my other deep family related stories (france and gil’s are the best written, i adivise you either look for them or send me an ask bc theyre great character building and explains personality traits and motives they have from their upbringing. i got a good one for liz too!!)

Elizabeta’s immediate family? A single dad who probably owns a motor bike and loves to be nostalgic for a time he wasn’t alive in. i want to say her dad probably was a bit of, like, y’know, doesn’t stick to one partner, so her mom is some rando, or maybe she died. THE REASON i chose to not have a strong female parent involved is to relate elizabeta back to hungary, canonical character. she’s the “most manly character in the series” and i want to say it’s because her dad brought her up to do a bunch of “dude” stuff because her mom wasn’t really around. He definitely taught her how to fight and stick up for herself bc he doesn’t want her to be the type to depend too much on other people. She grew up and became super independent, which is fine bc her dad is probably more interested in travelling around and doing dad stuff…Result? I’ve written her throughout this blog as a mom friend (indecent and trustworthy, check), a tomboy who hangs out with guys (they would share similar interests bc of forced gender roles like…..idk doing dumb shit). Her dad right now? probably fuckin’ off in europe and sending her postcards of cool monuments he’s visited.

alright just a “””quick””” (lol as if) little thing for each one bc it’s getting late & you’ve already been waiting on this for like an hour at the time i started typing. it’s probably gonna be long as fuck but the tl;dr is at the bottom

LUTHER:

they did luther so dirty…it was like david cage was playing “racist trope bingo” for his entire debut chapter…and then on top of that all he cares about is kara & alice, these two near-strangers, and it’s real easy to get him killed for them. in fact, in an ending where kara sacrifices herself at the border, she tells alice that luther will get her across the border, and after that, rose will take care of her. UM WHAT? don’t call ur PSN trophy “happy family” and then try to erase luther like that!! what does luther want? what are his hopes and dreams, his fears? nobody ever bothers to ask bc they’re too busy making ralph alice’s dad. and it’s not that i don’t like ralph - i do! but he threatened alice with a knife TWICE. after her previous dad’s bullshit, that’s the last thing she needs!!

here’s my take on luther: he says that what his life was before kara & alice doesn’t matter, and that’s because david cage doesn’t care about him. but imagine instead that luther remembers what he did (was forced to do) before he broke his programming. our luther is sweet and gentle and good, but zlatko forced him to use his strength as a weapon for LITERALLY tearing people apart. don’t you think luther regrets that? don’t you think he wishes he could take it back? perhaps his even temper and loving heart is a RESULT of those early memories: he’s seen the worst sides of anger and callousness, he’s had to be complicit in it. my feeling is that he never ever wants to be complicit in something like that again…it feels weird when he picks up a gun in the game because i think he would be even more of a staunch pacifist than josh?? i feel like even when luther does get annoyed or angry he’s so afraid of the harm he’s capable of doing he doesn’t even really let himself feel it And That’s Sad. he should be able to get annoyed at like a broken coffee maker or some shit without illogically worrying it will result in someone’s maiming or death?? maybe he is So Ready to throw himself on a grenade for kara and alice because yes, he does love them, but also he feels he has to redeem himself somehow, yk? he has to be willing to do absolutely WHATEVER it takes to be Good

they didn’t give luther any depth…he never got to speak to zlatko’s captives and apologize, he never got to express a feeling about kara potentially burning down the whole fucking nightmare house (with living androids inside, i might add) - would he have wished to save those androids? would he be glad their suffering was over? would he have motherfucking hearts in his eyes for kara single-handedly destroying his own personal hell? he deviated for alice, it was alice that made him say “ok, doing this to kids is where i literally can’t take it anymore” - don’t you think he’d be so retroactively terrified of all the terrible things that could have happened to her?

like i truly don’t get why people make ralph alice’s dad when luther loves her so fucking much he’d bring her the moon if she asked - he’s the only person who loves her just as selflessly and unconditionally as kara does. she accepted him and wanted him to say goodnight their very first night together…as soon as he resisted his programming, she stopped being afraid of him, and it must be so amazing for him to finally have people around who don’t either fear him or try to control him…whether u ship him with kara or not (i do, everyone should - it’s one thing to HC kara as gay but i side-eye people who don’t wanna ship luther with anybody) you know he’s gotta cherish them so much

AMANDA:

ok look i know amanda is the antag to connor’s story but honestly she’s metal as FUCK. i was so fucking floored to not only learn the garden isn’t a garden but that amanda isn’t amanda…my first playthrough i was letting connor be just a lil bit deviant but whenever amanda would ask about it i would panic and lie…now i know it doesnt matter what you can say and you can be blatantly deviant right in front of her and she’s like ok Whatever BUT i was deeply shook to realize all my lying to her all along hadn’t meant a thing…she did in fact KNOW i was lying because she wasn’t real, she was living in connor’s brain and she could see all that shit he was doing

and also?? like, imagine you were made out of a dead person’s face and voice. we don’t know if amanda has a body, we don’t know if kamski actually liked what he created or thought it was creepy (like imagine if he and amanda were close and then she died…it’d be weird to see her like that), we don’t know if amanda CAN deviate like the androids…she’s living this half life potentially stuck in some garden and just doing what her program says like everybody else. but even though machines get all the sympathy in this game i very rarely ever see people stop and go “dude, is she ok…is someone controlling her can we help her” - amanda’s a lot like connor, she’s hunting down deviants but she’s not a human and she’s not alive yet so who’s pulling her strings?? can they be cut???

JOSH:

i’ll be honest i haven’t figured out what Angle i like best for josh the way i’ve got one for luther and north but he has such strong convictions i feel like they would have to stem from some past experience. everybody’s always arguing about simon vs north that nobody stops to give josh the attention he deserves…he’s part of the fantastic 4 too!! who is josh? what does he want? what is he afraid of? does he refuse to be violent for reasons like luther - did he hurt someone, deliberately or accidentally? (to a lesser extent, a pacifist markus who shoved leo can also follow this pattern - he gave into violence and thought he’d killed carl’s son, so he swore to do no more violence after that.) or: did he see someone else get hurt/get hurt himself? i know the backstory they give him in the gallery but tbh it’s very similar and not stand-out from most of the rest of the stuff we hear…

like, what made josh deviate? we literally never find out. i think it would be interesting tho if instead of just being the victim of violence, he was ordered to DO violence, and refused - maybe that’s why he got hurt. but i think his relationship WITH violence could be a complex thing for anyone who wanted to tackle it. we know why north prefers violence, why does josh detest it? (similarly, why does simon prefer safety over either approach? - but fandom gives him a lot of love and attention and tries to explain this, and nobody tries to explain it for josh.)

KARA & ALICE:

like…to a small extent…i know they’re main characters but i could write an essay just on why they didn’t get a fair shake either - constant victims of assault, little depth, kara got to choose what happened to her but not what kind of person she was gonna be like markus & connor, significantly less playtime than markus & connor, had NO influence on the big macro plot like markus & connor, i could go on…but definitely the worst for me is that everything about kara that made us love her (from the short), was ERASED - david took her memories and never made the slightest move towards kara wanting them back, or her being able to get them back. she’s six years old and he took all of her history from her, all of her agency!! i feel like translated into fic they can both become very flat - all kara cares about is protecting alice, and alice is constantly scared or hurt or needing to be taken care of, like a baby doll. granted that’s not actually far from the game’s canon, but it could have been MORE. kara had six entire years of experiences before she met alice - what makes alice special? who is kara without alice?

i really wish we had been able to take a personality route with kara - her main superpower seems to be empathy and getting people on her side (ralph, jerrys, zlatko’s creatures), but she can also wave around a gun at anybody who gets near her baby. it would have been really interesting to explore two sides of that - to have a kara who is 1000% Done and ready for wholesale murder if it means surviving vs having a kara who can bring out the best in anyone, even if they seem like bad people at first. (imagine the influence you could have over alice - she would learn to be wary of strangers or be warm to them.) but instead the narrative is wishy-washy; you can’t teach alice anything, and in fact she serves as kara’s moral compass instead of the other way around - you wind up doing things like comforting the guy who broke kara multiple times and waving a gun at ralph (who like, shouldn’t have done that, but also isn’t 100% in control of his own facualities all the time). it would have been really interesting to see kara be able to influence her own fate more as well - the camp sections are shitty and should not exist but like maybe a kara who had spent the whole game yelling at everyone with a gun would have the ability unlocked to then rally the people inside, and who cared what connor and markus were doing, you know?

but david doesn’t know how to write women so that’s not what we got - kara carried that entire franchise into reality and he totally screwed her over!!

TL;DR

luther was forced to do terrible things and that could explain a lot of his behavior if anybody cared, nobody ever wonders if amanda is being forced to obey programming like the rest of the machines or if she’s ok, josh’s relationship with violence could be very complex and we don’t know his motivation for refusing to participate in it the way we know north’s for preferring it, and david can’t write women so he shafted kara so fucking bad and it is an honest to god shame

in fact i would hazard to say both of them SPECIFICALLY would enjoy punching connor (pre-deviancy for north anyway she’d only punch him if he was still hunting androids)

nothing but disrespect for humans/androids respectively

would probably be happy to wholesale murder all humans/androids respectively but we all have room to grow

The first time Connor rode in Hank's car after he deviated was the morning they met at the Chicken Feed. Hank didn't want to stay out in the cold, so they went back to the Lincoln, Hank rubbing his hands and cursing the weather. He started up the car before their doors were even shut, and that was when the radio came on.

Hank really only listens to one kind of music in the car, and that's heavy metal. Knights of the Black Death had been blasting from his speakers since the first time Connor caught a ride with him. Connor could easily identify the artist, the track title, the time signature, and each and every instrument used in the song. Despite only knowing Hank for just over a week, he had heard it plenty of times.

But that moment was the first time Connor really got to listen. He wasn't just hearing information anymore; he was feeling the energy, caught up in the beat, the melody, even the screaming vocals. Music, even heavy metal, was pure expression, pure emotion, something Connor could finally let himself feel, and he loved it.

That was the first time Connor laughed, too. Sheer delight overwhelmed him, and it just happened by itself. "Wow," he said, grinning wide. "This is—" Connor speaks almost 500 languages, and none of them could have done that moment justice. "This is incredible." His toe was even tapping.

Hank stared at him, agape. "Are you fucking with me?" he asked. "You've gotta be fucking with me."

"Turn it up," Connor demanded, but didn't wait for Hank to do it. He didn't need for it to be louder to hear it, he was at slight risk to damage Hank's hearing, and he didn't care one bit. Once the music was shaking the entire car, Connor laughed again.

(warning for suicide talk in this answer)

i have a theory about canon which is that hank was married to cole’s mom but they got divorced either before or after cole��s death. death of a child almost always wrecks marriages, and hank has a mean sticker about ex-wives on his little bulletin board at the police station you can scan in “waiting for hank”

i think that’s kind of the least possible interesting answer (it is very frustrating that david comes up with characters with all this cool POTENTIAL and uses only about 2% of it tops) because it’s very…common? like if cole and cole’s mom had both died, that would have been kind of boring too, but at least it would have added more emotional weight to the tragedy. cole’s mom just being out of the picture seems like a dropped thread or maybe just lazy writing.

if she’s alive it brings up several questions: was she in the accident too? if not, does she blame hank for being beind the wheel (his car is not self-driving) or does she blame herself for NOT being behind the wheel? WERE they in a self-driving vehicle, because that would certainly give hank another reason to hate machines. where were they going when they got hit? does cole’s mom hate machines and androids too? it could have been interesting to have hank run into her late in the game, after his own opinions had changed, and both added to the mystery of why he hated machines so much and made him reconsider his own position.

if she died - was it in the accident? did she kill herself later? suicide is often crisis-driven and suicidal tendencies can be “contagious” - that is, if someone you are close to attempts or commits suicide, it increases your own suicide risk. that’s more interesting to me (even though fridging women is a TIRED trope, but we can’t expect too much from david) because it explains a little more about why hank might be prone to the self-destructive and risky behavior. slightly off topic, but i found his in-game explanation pretty weak, honestly. typically when someone engages in risky behavior without actually fully committing, it’s not because they want to die, but because they DON’T want to die but they lack the ability to cope with how they are currently living and they just don’t fucking know what else to do about it. which is KIND OF what hank said, but the way it was worded just feels like it was written by someone who did absolutely zero research into the matter.

but actually, since she’s not mentioned at all in the game, it might be even more interesting if cole’s mom didn’t exist in the traditional sense at all - since hank never mentions any biological family in the game i have an entirely baseless headcanon that he grew up in the foster system, and i think it would be an interesting character arc if he tried to build himself the family that he lacked growing up by adopting cole (it would certainly explain why he was SO old when cole was born) - and then doubly tragic when that attempt was destroyed.

"Look out, Kara!"

Kara is a state-of-the art android. Primarily designed to meet basic household needs and take care of children, she is equipped with a quantic battery that will keep her autonomous for nearly two centuries, able to speak 300 languages and prepare over 9,000 different dishes, and has stored in her memory every known children's story as of the date of her manufacture. She is capable of real-time abstract problem-solving, and her brain can perform up to one billion billion calculations per second. Most importantly, while the average human reaction time to auditory stimuli is .17 seconds, Kara's reaction time is .13 seconds. Less than that, sometimes, if the person calling her name is Alice.

So when Alice says look out, Kara ducks—fast.

And Luther's snowball sails right over her head, exploding against the wall of the house behind her. Kara follows the flight path with her head and then wheels around to face Luther. He grins, eyes crinkling. "Ganging up on me, girls?" he asks, leaning down to scoop up and pack another handful of snow into a snowball. He tosses it up and down in one hand. "I don't think that's very fair."

Kara sticks her tongue out at him.

She has a snowball too, hidden in her hands behind her back. She calculates a trajectory and the necessary amount of force and throws, nailing Luther right in the head. Kara commits the image of his sputtering, snow-covered face to memory, grabs Alice's hand, and runs—laughing helplessly at the indignant hey! from behind her.

Not so long ago, Alice's hand in hers while they ran away through the snow would have been no laughing matter. But it's all right now—now, they're only playing. This is just pretend.

Kara waits for Luther's next throw, but it never comes. Instead, he steps neatly out from behind the corner of the house into their path. Kara and Alice run headlong into him and stumble backwards, Alice going all the way to the ground. Luther has two armfuls of snow; he drops them on Alice's head, covering her almost completely.

That might be too cold, Kara thinks. "Luther—!"

"Say, have you seen Alice?" Luther asks, pretending not to see the giggling pile of snow beside him. "I thought she was with you."

Kara forces a smile. "I thought she was with you," she plays along.

"I'm here!" Alice laughs. Luther, it seems, never fails to get one out of her. And Kara never tires of her smile.

Luther looks down in mock surprise. "Alice? What in the world are you doing under all that snow? Hang on, I'll get you out of there—" And he drops to his knees, but instead of unburying her, begins to tickle her.

"Kara!" Alice shrieks, still laughing. "Kara, help me!"

Alice is fine, Kara reminds herself. Just because she's calling for help doesn't mean she's actually in danger. She's never been safer than she is with Luther. Everything's okay. In the entire two weeks they've lived in Canada, not a single person has tried to threaten, assault, capture, enslave, or kill any member of Kara's family.

Why would they? No one knows they're androids.

chloe and connor? man idk. connor strikes me as Pretty Gay but if i had to pick a lady i think chloe makes the most sense. (no offense to people who ship him with north and kara but i will literally never understand, especially on kara’s side. helloooo luther is RIGHT THERE)

i think theyve got a lot of good potential going on bc if you play connor as mostly a machine until he fucks up and gets simon shot and then all of the sudden he’s like oh no mortality is real oh no existential crisis oh no that makes chloe one of the first androids he sees as a real person - he can note that she’s pretty, a subjective opinion, rather than just spouting factual information - he can also, if he decides not to shoot her, talk about like looking into her eyes and just Knowing this shit was stupid fucked up. she’s the first android he really empathizes with on a lot of playthroughs - even when he let other deviants go before you could read it as a sense of guilt or whatever, not being sure why he did it, but this was a deliberate choice he was given all the time in the world to think about, and he chose not to shoot.

there’s also a parallel to be made about how connor is under amanda’s thumb and chloe is under kamski’s… (i think chloe and kamski could have been a super interesting duo but since they WEREN’Ti really hate canon kamski lmao so i hope his st200s murder his ass) but anyway i think it’s a position they could both see that they had in common and there would be a lot of sympathy for each other probably. chloe hopefully isn’t being forced to murder people but canon implied (bleeugh) that she WAS being forced to do some other extremely gross things, so like they would Get each other i think. it’s neat too bc connor is implied to be the most advanced prototype cyberlife’s ever built which means when he and chloe meet the oldest and the newest android (900 doesnt exist in all timelines, shut up) are staring each other in the face at last.

man, like i said, connor strikes me as Gay, and i know that’s not canon but bc of that i think I Personally Prefer them as good buds?? but like @ the people who are into that: i fully understand and support you

What would you have done differently with Kara's story (in DBH)?

an obvious easy change would be to just swap the events of kara and markus's story around...like, they both leave home and run into the wilds of detroit, right? (yeah markus got scrapped and didn't leave willingly but they both found themselves suddenly homeless with nowhere to go.) why can't markus wander aimlessly and then make a run for the border while kara gets a tip about jericho and decides to lead the revolution? (its bc david cage hates women and if you put a man into that storyline you start to realize how janked it is)

like, make her MATTER, you know? kara can die early in the story, unlike markus, and she won't come back, unlike connor. whether she makes it out or not doesnt make a bit of difference to androids as a whole whether she lives or dies - as a matter of fact, markus's actions (re: public opinion) hold jurisdiction over HER fate, when in reality it would have been better balanced to make it the other way around

to be entirely fair, i don't actually HATE kara's viewpoint as like, a casual everyday POV - like her being just some humdrum android, nobody important or special - it's an interesting pov - but it shouldn't have stayed that way the entire time. give us something special about her. make her ra9. pull her into the adventure reluctantly or against her will - unlike markus, who created the conflict, or connor, who responds to it. no, i can't help your war. no, i don't care about politics. i've got a daughter, don't you see that? alice is all that matters. but then her daughter gets suckered into this political mess and kara's got no choice but to step the fuck up for her

make kara special not because she's leading a cause or because she's close to the elite but because of who she is and what's inside her when you dig way down deep...have her spend her story taking control of her life instead of being assaulted and terrorized over and over. she carried this game for six years into the full franchise that it is today, she deserves to have a seat at the table just like markus and connor

6. Who is your least favorite character? Why?

kamski. you could do a million and one interesting and cool things with that character, but instead david went with a very generic “smug and cryptic and super rapey creep” character type. i hate him, he’s boring, he could have been so interesting, every theory, backstory, and personality fandom invents for him is better than what’s in the game

7. Who do you think deserved better/more in the game?

kara got so fucking shafted by david cage, it’s unbelievbable. more on this later w/ the other question but im so mad 5ever

9. Favorite trope in the game?

plotwise: the slow build to connor absolutely SNAPPING in the last chapter. from picking up the fish three steps into the game to the final choice of whether or not to shoot or spare chloe, i will reluctantly admit that was (mostly!) incredibly well done.

playwise: rapid back and forth switches between player characters. that shit is SO exciting, i wanted so much more

10. Least favorite trope?

plotwise: it’s a 3-way tie. contender one is how markus “converts” other androids into being people. it should be a choice THEY make, not one he makes for them - that defeats the point. it’s an us vs them thing then, and it’s just stupid. number 2 is the public opinion. not only do we never actually get to talk to the public, but it only goes up when you’re peaceful and get shot at for your civil rights. most of the racism blunders in the game are like so stupid and over the top but that one actually is like. horribly shitty. contender three: david had absolutely no business doing those recycling centers like concentration camps. those sections are HORRIBLE and inexcusable. like: yikes, dude.

playwise: david LET ME MOVE MY DAMN CAMERA

13. Are there characters you felt were slept on or done dirty by the game/fandom?

KARA AGAIN!!! she has less chapters than the male protags AND some of hers she has to share with others/doesn[’t get to make choices. her storyline is poorly done and she is repeatedly victimized AND he takes her memories of the iconic 2013 short that started it all? rude, rude, RUDE.

second runner up: north. they wrote her to be violent (which directly goes against ur goals if ur playing for a good ending, making her unlikable to some people) AND even if you do go against her goals you must ALWAYS romance her (unless you went out of your way to be rude to her, then you wont get the prompt) or she’ll get really mad at you. like, nothing you can do will please her - but she’s still got a backstory that justifies this world view, an amazing onscreen presence, and i think she has the potential to be a great character if she was written w/ more subtlety, which david has none of. with all those factors though plus them cutting out the potential gay romance markus could have had, everyone H A T E S her and it is deeply uncool :/ like, he doesn’t make it easy to like her, so under one hand, you almost can’t blame people for not warming up to her, but under the other, you know they’re all misogynists

19. Favorite animal in the game?

i know sumo is pretty great and popular and all (DOG!!!) but im gonna have to go with the fish. there’s a fish u can pick up right at the start of the game that has a amssive impact later and i hate that i love it but i love it
