losing patience
david santiago/reader, based on the prompts:
“Am I your lockscreen?” “You weren’t supposed to see that.”
“We’re not just friends and you fucking know it.”
@serpentstyles come get y'all juice
warnings: f!reader
"Come on, you admitted that you liked the movie last time."
You could see his lips curling, even as he lifted his to-go cup to his mouth to try to hide the smile. He took a sip of his green tea (the cafe manager, bless her heart, kept a separate brewer just for him due to his allergies) and gave you a carefully engineered flat look that did absolutely nothing to hide the amusement in his eyes.
"I said that because you were making those big, sad eyes at me," he said, setting his cup down on the table in front of him but keeping his hands on it. You'd had to take an outside table with the cafe being so full, and the fall air was brisk. "Also, you told me flat out that if I didn't say I liked it you would take personal offense and cry real tears. Those were your exact words."
"I said no such thing!" Your voice pitched up on your protest and he laughed a bit, lifting a hand when you got a bit too loud to try to calm you. Of course you had said exactly that but you would never admit to it, and he knew it very well if the way his eyes twinkled were any indication. You gave him a brief sour look, but were quick to relent again to try to wheedle him some more. "Please, David, you need to do something to unwind this weekend."
"If I say yes, will you come hiking with me next week? You said you would when the weather started to cool down again," he said, giving you that wheedling tone right back.
It really was an absolute sin that he had such pretty eyes, and such a pretty face, and such pretty hair, and such a pretty voice. You really never stood a chance when he asked you for anything. How you'd remained friends with him for this long without losing your soul to those deep brown eyes was an absolute mystery.
"Absolutely," you promised, knowing that Future You was going to regret that decision very much.
It was still worth it to see the delighted smile on his face. Maybe you had lost your soul somewhere down the line after all.
He picked up his phone to check the time and you swore—just for a second as the image flashed by—but it couldn't be. That would be ridiculous. This was David, after all. The golden child, the Lieutenant, the most perfect man in existence. You shook the notion out of your head and gave him a wry smile as he told you he had to go.
"I know, I know, duty calls," you said, waving him off. "Go save the world from drug dealers and murderers, and I'll save you from boredom on Saturday at seven. Don't be late!"
He promised and left, and you absolutely did not think about how for the briefest moment you thought you'd seen a picture of yourself for his lock screen.
Tumblr media
Saturday arrived more swiftly than you would have expected; your weekly activities thankfully kept you better distracted than you normally would have guessed. Knowing David's preferences, you skipped out on microwave popcorn for healthier snack alternatives most of the time. This week you had gone with a bit of a lazier route of veggie straws and the fancy organic gummy bears his partner had once clued you in that he liked. The movie was a standalone thriller, no franchises for the pop culture baby, nothing to do with cop work just to keep his mind at ease. Simple, casual. Friendly. Just like always.
(You were not thinking about his lock screen.)
He arrived at two minutes before seven with a smug smile on his face, as though he'd done it specifically to show you up for your comment about being late. (Thinking back on it, you wouldn't have been surprised if he had.) He had a container of your drink of choice and a wide grin on his face, and when he saw the baggie of gummy bears on the table he pressed a kiss to your temple that had your cheeks heating.
The movie went mostly smoothly, in that your streaming service didn't crash while it was running. Everything else seemed to be going awry.
You were hyper aware of David through the whole run of the movie, which wasn't necessarily unusual. as like any fan of movies, you loved to watch for the reactions of your friends. Tonight, though... it felt like every single time he moved or breathed or, hell, every time he blinked, it grabbed your attention away from the movie. You'd long known that you couldn't beat down your attraction to him, but it was getting to be a bit much.
Every time he shifted in his seat your eyes would flick over to his legs as he readjusted. Whenever he moved to lean on the armrest of the couch you found yourself fixated on the flex of his fingers under his chin. He laughed at a joke and your heart soared, and he crossed his legs and you just—you couldn't help yourself peeking—
"You alright?"
His voice broke through the fog you'd been in when he'd uncrossed his legs and hooked his ankles together instead, and your eyes jumped back up to his face.
"Yeah, sorry! I guess I'm a little tired," you said, giving him a soft smile. "Maybe we can take a quick break? I need a new drink anyway."
You lifted the drink he'd brought for you and he nodded, groaning a bit as he stood. "I'm going to run to the bathroom, then. Meet back in a minute."
The two of you separated to take care of your self-appointed tasks, and it wasn't until you got back with your refill that you saw that David had left his phone on the arm of the couch.
It was too much to resist. You didn't hear the toilet flushing or the sink going in the bathroom, yet, so you knew that you had at least a few seconds. That was all you'd need to disabuse yourself of this wild idea, right? Just a few seconds to confirm that you'd seen some model or some kind of group precinct photo or—anything but your own face underneath the time display.
But when you raised the phone, there you were.
It was a photo of you that had been taken at a Santiago family gathering, you remembered. Everyone had been out by the pool, and you had been convinced to wear a top that was more revealing than your usual fare. The arm around your shoulders in the picture had been David's, but everyone else was cut off but you. It was just your smile, your laugh caught in the moment, and you jumped out of your skin when you heard David calling your name behind you.
"What are you doing with—?" he started to ask, but you turned it around to face him before he could finish the question.
"Why am I your lock screen?" you said, voice hoarse.
He blinked, and something passed through his eyes that you didn't fully understand.
"You weren't supposed to see that," he said softly, and he held his hand out for his phone. You didn't want to hand it over quite yet, and you held out for a moment longer. He said your name in that same quiet tone. "Please."
"Is this some kind of joke?" you found yourself saying, even while you knew in your heart it couldn't be true. Not David. Never David. But it was the only explanation you could think of. It was the only thing that poisonous little voice in the back of your head would let you believe, because this was David. Amy's sainted brother, the golden child, the perfect one.
"What? No, god, no!" He looked at you incredulously, obviously insulted by the mere suggestion, and he ran a hand over his face and for the first time since you'd known him he looked genuinely irritated. "You know that's not the reason."
"I don't see what other reason there might be," you said, voice pitching up as your anxiety started to rise. There was no way this meant what you thought it meant. It couldn't possibly—
"What reasons would a man have for making a woman he's close to his lock screen, do you think?" he snapped, and when you were finally able to meet his eyes again they were absolutely blazing. "What reasons do you think he might have for taking a beautiful picture and putting it somewhere he can look at it as often as he likes?"
Your throat felt tight all of a sudden, making it a struggle to swallow, and your hand holding his phone shook.
"That's something you do for a girlfriend, David," you said after a long moment. "We're not—we're just—"
“We’re not just friends and you fucking know it!" It was the first time you thought you'd ever heard his voice raised outside of work, and while it didn't make you flinch you were definitely surprised. He seemed to see it, because he calmed himself again and took a deep breath. "This has been going on for too long, and I'm starting to lose my patience. I knew that you could be skittish—"
"Skittish!" you said in a squeak.
"—but this is a bit much," he finished, giving you a bit of a flat look for the interruption.
He approached cautiously, like you were truly a wild animal he was afraid of frightening off, and he gently pulled his phone out of your hand to stick in his pocket before he reached up for your shoulders.
"I'm going to kiss you now," he said, watching your face and smirking a bit to himself when your eyes widened. You hated and loved how satisfied with himself he looked all at once.
"Okay," you breathed, and he smiled as he leaned in to press his lips to yours.

Welcome Home
Usnavi x Reader
Words: 2300+
A/N: I am so sorry for the writing of fics being late. I really am in a crux right now with the current fic I was trying to write. It will come out as soon as I figure it out:)
---------------------------------------------------
"Usnavi. We need to talk.” You said somberly. You were in the bodega standing near Usnavi while he was fixing and arranging the things on the store shelf.
“What is it mi querida?” Usnavi, the man your dating asked. He asked with such loving concern as always. Your heart was in pain and it was about to get more painful.
You were 18. You had just finished your senior year two months before this. You were given the chance to go to college and you were ecstatic when you heard the news. You were so happy. You were going to be the first person in your family to go to college, but the next part got you a bit pulled back. Your college was out of the state. It was out of New York. You were going to Stanford University with Nina in California and you would be far away from home and most importantly Usnavi, the man you loved. Nina had nothing to worry about, but you had a big one.
It took you a week to make the decision and you had finally come to one. You thought that this was too good of a chance to pass up. You had three days to prepare on what to say to him and to tell him your choice. Three days have gone by and you were honestly not even close to half on being prepared in every way. Now you had to say it to him and imagining him in a miserable state makes you miserable too.
“I- I..” you stuttered.
“What is it Y/N? Are you alright?”
You were so nervous and pained to say it to him.
“Can we sit down somewhere?”
“Sure.”
Concern was present in his voice.
“Okay Y/N, calm down. Breathe…” When he said that, your tears were threatening to fall out of your eyes.  It takes a lot of courage to leave a man sweet and caring like him.
You took a small breath and prepared yourself. You felt like vomiting, but you had to say it.
“I’m going to college.”
“Y/N that’s amazing.” He said warmly. “Where is it?”
“It’s in California.” He was a bit taken aback for a second, but got himself talking again.
“It’s alright. We can long distance this right?” You couldn’t look him in the eye.
“Right?” he said again, but with a much more worried tone.
“I-“ You were so ready to just cry and scream, but you had to handle this properly. You tried facing him eye-to-eye.
“Usnavi. I’m going to California. I mean long distance sounds alright, but it’s just not what I wanna do.” Your voice was shattering.
“I don’t wanna force you into a relationship that includes your partner to be so far away from you. Both you and I know it will be difficult and keeping you in this relationship while I’m so far away just makes me feel worse. You deserve someone who’s going to be there for you and who is near you.”
“What are you trying to tell me?” His voice was somber and you couldn’t keep your eyes looking at him anymore. The tears had started to fall.
“I’m trying to say that- that we can’t go with our relationship like this. Going further with a distance so large is so difficult.”
Usnavi had tears visible in his eyes.
“So… I have to leave you.” You ended with that and you started to cry. Usnavi was saddened by the news.
“When do you leave?” He asked.
“Tomorrow afternoon.”
He didn’t say anything further. He took you into his arms and embraced you while you were crying.
“I know you don’t want this and I don’t want this either. I’m so sorry.” You were sobbing a lot. Usnavi didn’t bother to say anything, but he held you in his embrace and cried with you.
The next day was miserable for the both of you. Everyone was there when you were going to leave. Usnavi was also there. He was the last one you faced for a goodbye.
“Bye.” You said sadly. He then took you in again for another hug.
“Goodbye.” He felt your warm tears on his shirt. He then broke the hug and kissed you one last time.
When you got into the car with Nina, your heart was still in pain.
---------------------------------------------------
Five years have gone by. College and having a side job were a pain. Wow, the days go so quickly. You finally finished college. Your graduation was hot, but your parents were there. After that, they left early with Nina’s parents to go home because of the business they had to operate. You and Nina then were left to pack everything up and get ready to go home.
You were excited to go back home and see the GWB and the barrio and how everyone was doing. As you were thinking that, your thoughts had made you remember Usnavi. Your heart was having a small sting. Suddenly going home was nerve racking to you.
“You ready?” Nina asked
“Yup.” You guys then took a car to get to the airport.
When you both were finally in the plane, you couldn’t get him off your mind. You couldn’t forgive yourself for what you did. You broke his heart. When you both got to JFK, it was around midnight. You were picked up by Nina’s parents and was delivered home.
While riding the car, you finally saw the GWB. Oh, how much you’ve missed the place. With every minute, you were getting closer and much more nervous. After a few minutes, you finally reached home.
You took your bags into your room with the help of your parents and you were getting ready for bed. You felt tired and ready to sleep. After finishing the preparation, you finally sighed in relief. You had gotten comfortable on your bed, but as soon as you were finally about to sleep, Usnavi came into your mind again with the past attached to the thought. With all of you deep thinking about the past, it made you a bit more tired and with that thought, you somehow slept.
You heard your mom call you from the hallway.
“Y/N, wake up.” Right, this isn’t California anymore. You were home, but kinda jet lagged.
You finally decided to get ready for the day. You took a bath, put on some clothes and ate your “breakfast” which at this point was basically brunch already.
“Where’s dad?” You asked.
“He went out to work.” She said. She then continued, “Y/N, can you go to the bodega and buy some milk.”
“AWww why me?”
“It’s not a suggestion, it’s a demand.” She said with sassiness.
“Okay dictator.” With that you continued eating and chilled in the house for a bit. Hours later, you decided to go for a walk and pass by the bodega while doing that.
It was hot outside. You decided to pass by the barrio businesses. You decided to go to the Rosario’s first. When you got in, you sighed in relief feeling the aircon.
“Oh hoh hoh, look who’s home.” You knew that voice.
“Wassupppp Benny! How are you?”
“Still the number one earner and the fastest learner. What made you come over here?” he asked.
“I just wanted to stroll around and do nothing much. Well, I have to pick something up in the bodega too.”
“How are you and Usnavi? You really broke his heart.”
Okay. Damn, that was quick and what. The memory came rushing into you again. You were completely not prepared for that question.
“I haven’t gotten or talked to him yet.” You said with a bit of guilt.
He was about to say something, but he was interrupted by a sound coming from the dispatch.
“I honestly would love to chat more but boss is making do things. We should catch up soon yeah?”
“Sure. Bye” He then nodded back at you. You then continued your stroll. Your feet brought you to the salon. You were honestly dreading the salon. The ladies in there get news pumping real quick.
You mentally prepared yourself and opened the door. You were greeted by Carla and Daniela talking to a customer about the liquor shop owner, Julio who was caught cheating on his girl with a man.
“So, Yesenia walked into the room and she had a bat. She smelled sex and cheap perfume and saw Julio with another man and- Hey Y/N welcome home!” Daniela said with a very welcoming tone.
“Hi Dani, hi Carla.” You smiled.
“What brings you to the salon?” Carla asked.
“I just wanted to go around the barrio. I mean, it’s been five years. I miss it. Where’s Vanessa?”
“She’s on her own social hours.” Daniela answered. You chuckled a bit. You guys then talked for a bit about college. After a few minutes of talking, you were deciding to take your leave.
“I love talking to you both. Thank you for the news I missed.”
“No problem chica. If you come here every day, you’ll receive the daily news.” Dani said.
“I’m gonna head to the bodega now.”
“For what?” Carla asked.
“I’m gonna pick up some stuff mama told me to buy.”
“Chica, I know it’s been so long, but how are you and Usnavi?”
There again. You really were again caught off-guard with that question. You realized they knew too. You wanted to run away already but you had to handle it properly.
“I haven’t talked to him in a while…”
“Aww, you’ve gotta catch up and talk to him at least.” Carla said with pity present in her voice.
“Carla’s right. The boy was so heartbroken and dead when you left”
“What do you mean?”  Curiosity was getting the best of you and it was genuine.
“That boy was sad for a bit. He wasn’t the lively caffeinated cinnamon roll before anymore after you left.” Dani said.
“Maybe a few months…” Carla added.
“Well, I’ll try talking to him and maybe catch up over coffee…I’ll take my leave now guys.” You were a bit sad after hearing that.
“Bye linda, see you around.” Dani said and hugged you for a bit.
“Adios Y/N” Carla added.
With that, you took your leave and decided to walk aimlessly for a bit. You felt annoyed, sad, and miserable when you heard Usnavi related questions. How could you have done that? But I mean you were both young. Right?
As you walked aimlessly, you finally decided to stop. Your feet had brought you to a place that had a lot of memories. You walked into the door and heard the salsa and hip hop on the radio. You went inside the bodega. You walked the aisles for a bit. You looked for stuff and reminisced all those memories you had in it. You heard two people talking on the counter. They both sounded familiar. You then decided to continue your shopping. You were near the chip aisle when you heard,
“Y/N?”
“Oh no” was the first thing that came into your mind. That voice was embedded in your mind. It’s one of the voices you recognize. You stopped dead in your tracks and tried to prepare yourself for one helluva an encounter in the barrio.
“Hi.”
That was all you managed to say, but your mind then decided to get yourself together. When you looked on their side of the store, you saw Vanessa on the other side of the counter. You decided to avoid as much interaction with Usnavi, but you’ll still be polite.
“OH, hey Vanessa. How are you?”
“I’m good. Thanks.”
“Don’t mind me, I’ll be shopping around.” With that they went back to their talking and coffee. You were absolutely terrified of what comes next. You then heard a bit of whispering and you were curios but decided to not care about it as much.
When your basket was finally filled and ready for checkout, you proceeded to the counter. You were preparing yourself for this encounter in every way possible.
You finally walked to the counter and reached it. As soon as you started emptying the basket for the check out Vanessa said a quick “bye” to both of you and left. Oh dear, you were left alone with your ex who has been in your mind all day. You decided to stay quiet for a bit, but the awkwardness was killing you. Usnavi decided to break the silence.
“Hey. Long time no see.” He said.
“Wait is he blushing?” you thought.
“Yeah.”
“So how was college?”
“It was alright.” Yes, it was definitely the worst conversation you’ve had all day.
“The subtotal is 14.65 dollars. Coffee?” He asked.
“No thank you, it won’t help me fall asleep. My jet lag is still in its process.”
He then packed all the stuff you bought into a grocery bag.
“It’s nice to see you again Y/N.”
You swear you were not prepared by that and you were blushing.
“Same here.”
You picked up your bag and were heading towards the door. As you were about to leave the store, you heard your name being called out by him.
“Y/N?”
“Yeah?” you turned your head towards him.
“I wanna be honest with you.”
You were a bit confused by that but you wanted to hear him out.
“I really, badly miss you. You have been my ray of sunshine no matter how bad the days got. Even though we ended like that, I still missed you. I still loved you and I still do. It felt so empty not seeing you around here. I felt like something is missing everyday and it always was you. Home wasn’t home without you in it.”
You wanted to break into tears and run into his arms.
“I know things may be a bit off between us, but I’m willing to wait forever for you to come around and be in my arms again. I loved you and I still do.”
He then decided to catch his breath for a bit.
“Welcome back home.” He said in a somber tone.
He then looked down and his face was the face he had when you left him.
You didn’t want to leave him again. You couldn’t do it again. You ran to the counter and hopped over it and pulled his collar. You turned him around kissed him. It felt and tasted sweet. It felt nostalgic. It felt like home.
You then broke the kiss and hugged him.
“I’m never leaving you again.” Your tears prickled down your cheeks. He then followed after. You both were in each other’s embrace.
“I’m home and I won’t do it again.” You said while crying tears of joy.
“I love you, mi querida.”
“I love you too.”
After years of being apart from your parents, the barrio, and Usnavi, you came back and you were finally home.

Today I re-watched 200 Cartas: Looking for Maria Sanchez and I love Raul so much. He is funny and cute, so cute. Yet I can't find a fanfic with him. I need it so muuuuch!
I don't know, maybe one where y/n is Juan's (Raul's friend) sister and likes Raul, but don't have courage to tell him that and they go look for Maria and both of them get together in the end.
Or one where Raul meet y/n in Puerto Rico when he is looking for Maria, y/n is friend of one Maria or help him somehow...
I really don't know I just need Lin-Manuel as Raul contents.
