— bsd imagery: fish-eye

okay okay i know how we all meme about the fish-eye moments in bungo stray dogs (in the anime) bc it looks silly, but in a cinematic point of view it’s actually well used in my opinion! bear with me on that one

so, i’m in a cinema course in college and the first thing we tell you is everything has a meaning when a director decides what to show on screen or hide from us and how they film it. ofc now it’s an anime, but the theory still works!

ex: not showing the face of a character bc they’re mysterious/hide something from the main characters (whether us, the audience, know about their motives or not) so they are physically hidden and feels distant from us in a way or zooming in on the face of a character to symbolize the reality of the events coming to them.

so, what the fish-eye does? what those it represents? (in bsd, at least)

i think it represents fear or disturbance that the ‘victim’ of the fish-eye feels at this moment, just by the context of how bones uses it in bsd, i don’t remember of a lot of exemples but here are some:

atsushi’s first appearance in the anime is literally a fish-eye (if i remember properly) and he’s in a moment of stress since he needs food asap or he’ll die of hunger

ranpo and poe’s when they saw the body fall of the building, they didn’t expect it at all and even if you saw many crimes, it can still be disturbing to see a man (who looks alive) fall down

[spoiler for ep 2 of s5] atsushi feels fear of fighting alone a very strong opponent and wants someone to be with him in that moment, a very hopeless feeling

plus, when we feel fear/disturbed, it can feel like reality doesn’t feel real too, fear puts you on survival mode and you will just seek a safe place and when we see something disturbing, you can feel off too… idk how to explain it very well but it visually represents how our perception changes once we are afraid or stuff like that. even in films, it is used to represent that feeling bc yeah it does make things look a bit weird

I don’t usually do these kinds of things but I have had my abaolute fucking fill of this cowardly, pathetic, idiotic, and immature behavior. I will be the first to admit that I don’t know who this person is, but I have known Lyly for YEARS. Nearly 6 years to be exact and she is my best friend.

This girl had a heart of gold & would give the shirt off of her back & her very last pound to anyone who needed it. She provides many role players with their own custom themes & painstakingly goes through several caps to create high quality icons for the community. She breathes life into characters that have barely any screen time or even if they are the main character, her portrayal is so fresh & so raw that it’s unlike anything I have ever seen before.

Lyrieux is the type of person who will stay up on the line with you for hours until she is certain you are okay before letting you go & the very first person to check on you the next day. She’s got several characters on this site & each one of them are an amazing gift to this community, I’m sure you will all agree. Her passion for her characters is so evident in all of her hashed out backstories & analysis of anyone she portrays but here lately, damn near a while actually, someone has been giving her regular hate for something that had happened over 8 fucking years ago.

To recap: a sad, pitiful, vengeful, sad excuse for a fucking bone & flesh pile has been sending her hate, harassing her, threatening her, & no matter how many times she tries to block said person, they will remake & do it all over again. Everyone just says delete it and move on, but this shit can only be ignored so much. Lyly has endured this for far too long and I am so fucking sick of this Rai person dragging her down. Whatever the fuck happened back then, those many moons ago, is not my business & I do not want to know but what is my business is my best friends mental health and well being and I will not fucking sit back anymore while she sobs and fears even logging into her favorite accounts.

She has done NOTHING to warrant this behaviour and it’s past the point of bullying at this point. It’s legit harassment & stalking & so fucking help me if this person keeps on doing it I will fucking make you rue the day you decided to send Lyly one fucking message. Rai, you need to grow the fuck up and move on with your life. How dare you come to a place where people use it as an escape, a resource, a place to wind down from the already stressful situations outside of this site and make it a horrible experience for them. She is allowed to come here & have fun. She is allowed to be here & use her beautiful writing as an outlet & I will NOT have you ruin her or threaten her anymore.

“Leadership” -  The group discussion seem to go better when I have had my coffee in the mornings. All jokes aside, the group discussions are easiest for me when I am the one talking and making the points. 

“The Facts of the Case” - My case is about the dilemma of a soldier deciding whether or not to shoot the child pointing a gun at them. 

“Analysis” - This is a very hard question. The moral dilemma here is literally a decision of life or death. Is the soldiers life more important than that of the child with the gun? This is a very hard case to discuss in the group because of the dilemma of the worth of one persons life over another. 

“Conclusions” - If I were the soldier, I think I would have to take the shot. I would do this because in the situation of war, all is fair. This reminds me of the quote from John Lyly’s Euphues “All is fair in love and war”.

“Future Environment” - With the way technology is going, I see self driving cars, higher speed internet, and food that delivers itself.

“Future Scenario” - This ethical situation would leave me morally injured and permanently scarred.

— jjk imagery: the fishes

it’s without a doubt that, in this seasons, i find so much visual/auditive metaphors that is super interesting to break down! and i think the fishes in the ending just represent their whole situation in the show, just by seeing the fish going black i was like ‘oh somethings going to happen’. i’ll get in more details!

disclaimers - i am not a pro on either of their characters, it’s based on my perception so things might not feel accurate… feel free to correct me if needed and you can also provide your own info/perception if you want! i am always happy to discuss about it! / i might add more precisions if i feel it’s needed, i will reblog with the info! [CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2] / also, might contain errors, i wrote this late at night/early in the morning and didn’t have the time to edit it (it will be done sooner or later)

so, let’s start with how they appear the first time: they both appear in white which is most of the time linked with purity. in the start of this arc, even if they have different visions when it comes to the duty of a jujutsu sorcerers and their purpose, they are still able to connect with each other. it’s pretty easy to identify which fish represents who: the black eyed one is geto while the blue eyed one is gojo. i also like how the fishes has a resemblance to them, geto’s fish as (idk how to call those actually lol) lines that remind me of his bang/how his hair are tied and gojo’s fish is more filled which kind of represent his hair somehow.

(also, i noticed that the fishes go in the directions of the other, blue eyed fish goes left while geto is shown more on the left side and black eyed fish goes to the right while gojo is show on the right side, it’s like they’re joining each other like they do in the ending: they’re meeting up)

then, we see the fish that represent geto fade to black after the wave hit him. the wave represents the turning moment for his philosophy and his motives, the moment when gojo told him they could kill the people in the room. that’s when they started to drift apart, also shown in that ep with the color and the wall between them + they are not looking at each other. geto is in the blue, he still believes that it’s not the right thing to do since they seemed innocent. gojo is in the red, which is a colour mostly connected with violence, who propose that idea. between them, there’s a wall which visually represents how their views differ and conflict with each other. it is the turning point for geto and the moment that he starts to doubt his believes. all to say, that wave represents that moment. it hit him hard and it ‘corrupted’ him. black his not linked with good things most of the time, and that showed he fell into the darkest corner of his mind. meanwhile, the fishes are also drifting appart.

another shot i thought was interesting was when they looked at each other’s fish. i am not so sure about how to take gojo’s reaction, but geto’s is pretty obvious to me. so here is their respective reaction (start & end of the sequence)

gojo’s part - as i said, i am not quite sure what to say about his reaction since he doesn’t really show any big emotions. the only thing i can get is maybe he was clueless about what was happening in his mind. he noticed something was up with him since he did ask him if he was fine, but suguru doesn’t share what is really happening inside so satoru can’t guess what is happening to him. he just sees it and doesn’t get it since it’s a debate happening in someone else’s mind.

geto’s part - he looks at the fish before looking down and closing his mind. it feels like he knows their relationship will be affected by that change. he seems like he’s looking away as a way of saying ‘i understand we will not be able to get along, i need to let go’. while he doesn’t share about the whole situation, he knows that depending on the path he takes it will have repercussions on the things around him which includes his relationship with geto. that’s why i perceive some sadness, but not necessarily some regret since it’s his belief and he seems like someone who will follow it to seek the ideal world he seeks.

also, notice the lighting: satoru is in the light while suguru is in the shadow. it represents their mental state.

i cannot add any pictures anymore sadly, but the last shot we see is geto’s fish following gojo and gojo’s fish following geto. then, the fishes disappear. this could represent their future. i think that the human version represent them in the present and the fishes are what will happen to them, the fishes disappearing shows that their relationship faded because of the divergent path they stand in.

SO! in conclusion - i want to note how parallel is something that seems to be very present in jujustu kaisen, which is very interesting! being a jujutsu sorcerer, facing death and sometime the need to end someone’s life for their own good (for exemple, yuji and the transformed human because of mahito) or to save more people (themselves or the enemy) creates differences between the characters. depending on what they experienced, the people they met and at what time, how they coped with their emotions, etc. makes them see the world another way. it’s something i really enjoy, since it feels like these things influence their actions and how the story is told. if one character is changed for another, things could drastically change. all to say that having character that mirros each other is great. in the case of satoru and suguru, their contrasting personality is what made them have different outcome to the situation that affected geto’s philosophy of life.

bones really spiced up the separation scene of fukuzawa and fukuchi lmaoo😭 once i find the panels, i’ll reblog them for reference

i mean look at these scenes:

the first one - the sakura petal is cut in half. it’s not cuted at a random moment: it’s when fukuchi arrives and it’s to propose something that will divided them from one another and makes them unable to connect after taking two different paths. it shows how they don’t "make one" like they used to.

the second one - the white crane stays on the ground while watching the gray crane fly away. this not only shows that fukuchi got away because he participated in a war and couldn’t stay while fukuzawa stayed in the city doing his things, it also shows how they both took different path and that fukuchi took a complete different route. he got to the battlefield which influenced his view of the world and explained his parting from the relationship he had with fukuzawa. at some point, it also shows that fukuzawa, staying where he is, thinks fukuchi is the same old person (like he said in the fight which turned out wrong) but only fukuchi understand his new self affected by the war.

the third one - after fukuchi asked fukuzawa, the damage was already done: their life is now separated. the tree visually separates them with a thick wall which shows that they don’t understand each other like before. they both see things differently in that moment and it shows the distance they have between them.

take this how you want, but they just took symbols one after another and i was like "hold up..?", anyways i love symbolism and imagery in shows and it’s just so cool when you understand it. it’s just funny how way more symbolic it is then in the manga haha😭
