The letter from His Majesty’s Armed Forces arrived. Ernie was the one who answered the door. He knew the news could not be good. He wanted to be the one to break it to Madeline.
It was the news they had dreaded, confirmed in writing. Charles Ernest Langston III, killed in action in service to His Majesty.
Madeline and Ernie broke down in one another’s arms. Their eldest son, their only son, was gone.
That night when they went to bed, there was a weariness about them both. Both their sons were gone in a war that seemed never ending. They were elderly and tired. It was all too much.
Charles Ernest Langston II and Madeline Jane Langston went to sleep that night and did not wake again.

Another historical lookbook - this time for teenage Madeline! As @sims-and-pixels reminded me, I haven’t done an upper class style lookbook yet!
Madeline comes from a wealthy background and has many different outfits for different occasions. Fleshing out her outfits was a lot of fun as I can imagine she has fashionable clothes, and lots of them - I got to play with more popular fashion trends of the era than my other Legacy sims.
This lookbook is on the cusp of 1890s/1900s style as we’re only just entering a more Edwardian era of fashion at this stage, but with elements of Victorian style still clinging on like full sleeves and high necklines. I plan to do another for Madeline for the 1900s later down the track... (spoiler alert? 😳)

In Memory of Charles Ernest ‘Ernie’ Langston II and Madeline Jane Langston (nee Eldridge) - 1891 - 1916
Ernie was the first heir to the Langston Legacy for Generation 2. In his lifetime he achieved enormous wealth for his family by working as a writer and publishing many books on his archaeological studies. He maxed the writing and archaeology skills and reached the top of the Writer (Author) career.
Madeline was the first spouse to join the Langston family. She sacrificed her inheritance and family to be with Ernie. In her lifetime she was a wonderful wife and mother who raised both her sons and niece to their fullest potential, and maximised the cooking and knitting skills.
Madeline and Ernie are now at rest with their two biological sons, Charles and Henry. They are survived by their adoptive daughter Marigold.

Henry Oliver Langston 1903 - 1915 (Aged 25 years old)
Henry’s body was taken back to Brindleton where he was bured in the same cemetary as the rest of the Langston family, and where his parents would eventually come to rest some day so that they may be with their dear son once more.
Charlie was granted leave to return to England for his brother’s funeral. He blamed himself for Henry’s death, thinking that if he had only been quicker, his brother would still be here.

So I’ve been on my lookbook shit again... and I always said I’d do another lookbook for Madeline later in the 1900s - so here it is! A 1900s lookbook for the middle aged/adult sim.
Madeline is much older now and her style has changed accordingly. She dresses in a bit more of a conservative fashion due to her age - she used to be the belle of the ball, but now she is a mother, a wife and a homemaker.

Primrose went into labour one evening and gave birth in the Langston house with the help of Marigold and Madeline.
Her daughter Daisy Adelaide Weston was born healthy and beautiful.

When Madeline opened the door to find the Armed Forces messenger her heart sank. This was the news every family member dreaded.
Henry had been injured in action. In the bomb blast his body had been badly wounded by flying shrapnel. He had been brought back to Britechester.
The family sat around his bedside in the hospital. Madeline an Ernie prayed and prayed for their son to wake up and heal. But Marigold, with the knowledge she had from her nursing, knew there was no hope. The shrapnel had entered his vital organs. He was in agony and kept sedated with pain medication. It was only a matter of time.
Almost as if sensing he was finally back home with his family, Henry Langston took his last breath, with his mother, father and sister by his side.

Part 4/4
When Marigold returned home that evening she was weary from the emotions of the day. She didn’t want to speak with her parents, but when she entered the house she found them both waiting for her in the sitting room. They were relieved she had come home after the events of the morning, having feared the worst.
‘Goldie... your mother has told me about the letter... and what Primrose told you,’ said Ernie. ‘And well... I wanted to give you an explanation, from us.’
Ernie was holding a very old photograph in his hands. He held it out for Marigold to see.
‘This is my sister Sybil. I know we have spoken of her in the past but I thought you should know who she really was. This is the only photograph I have of her and I haven’t looked at it for a very long time because the pain of losing Sybil never really went away for us all... especially for your uncle Frank.’
‘What happened to her?’ asked Marigold. She looked at the young girl in the photograph and felt like she was looking at herself.
‘Well, we do not know, but considering how long it has been since we last saw her we can only assume that she passed away, likely in childbirth. You see, she ran away with a lad she met at the carnival. She broke our parents hearts, and your grandfather died of grief after she left. We never saw either of them again, until one night your grandmother found two infants on the front doorstep.’
‘Was that...me?’ asked Marigold.
‘Yes. And Primrose.’
Marigold felt a sense of relief. At last the truth was out.
‘Goldie, I miss my dear sister, I always will. But if she had not made her mistakes, then we would not have been blessed you as our daughter. You are our daughter no matter what, the daughter we always wanted. You are our family and we love you. We never felt like we were lying to you, because that has always been our truth.’
Goldie felt her eyes well up with tears. Both her parents embraced her. Her fathers words were the assurance she had been seeking all day. There was joy and sadness in this revelation, but right now all she knew was love.

At the end of Summer, Ernie finally returned home to Britechester and his family. Madeline was overjoyed to finally have her husband home. In the time since they had last seen each other they had both aged, but they still felt as they had the day they had married.
The boys returned home from school to greet their father, and it was Ernie’s greatest pride to see what fine young men his sons had become.
(Ernie was off in Selvadorada with me for 7 days while we completed his lifetime want 🥰🥳)

Ernie and Madeline bid farewell to Charlie at the train station once more as he returned to the front.
The parting was so much harder this time around in the wake of Henry’s death. Madeline held her only son and told him to come home to her, and he assured his mother that he would see her soon. Even Charlie wished he could remain there with his parents, having them hold him on the train platform, knowing he was safe and secure. He was determined to come back to them, and not cause them any more pain.
Ernie and Madeline watched the train leave and a great sadness fell upon them. Who knew how much longer it would be. Who knew if Charlie would return this time.

The day finally came for the newest recruits to His Majesty’s Armed Forces to leave home for Europe and the Great War that was waiting for them.
The Britechester train station was filled with every last young man, and some not so young, anticipating the adventure of war, excited for what lay ahead, and prepared to die for their country.
As the Langston’s said goodbye to Charlie and Henry, it was with the greatest sorrow that anything could happen to them. Madeline held her dear sons one last time and wished them to return home, whilst Ernie held his pride and joy, Charlie, with the knowledge that he may never come home.
Finally, after the boys had departed, Ernie and Madeline let their grief show. All they could do now was wait, and hope that this war would be over soon.

One day, near the end of Summer and Primrose’s stay in Britechester, some mail arrived bearing some shocking news.
Marigold had been teaching Primrose needlework and the girls were enjoying their morning on the balcony. Madeline approached them knowing that the news that had just arrived in the letter would shatter the beautiful happiness that had surrounded the girls these past few weeks.
‘Oh my dear Primrose,’ she said tearfully. ‘There has been a letter from your sister Mary. I am so sorry my dear, but your father has passed away.’
The young girl burst into tears. Marigold was at a loss to know how to react. The news was certainly a shock - Louis Scott was only in his 50s.
Madeline wrapped her arms around Primrose and held her close. She herself remembered losing her own father at a young age, though not as young as this. She let the poor girl weep into her shoulder and comforted her.
‘I... I haven’t any black with me,’ she finally gasped.
‘Don’t worry dear girl, we shall get you something appropriate to wear. We must get you home to your mother. I will book the train tickets and we will leave immediately.’

Marigold and Madeline travelled to Brindleton Bay with Primrose to attend the funeral of Louis Scott.
The funeral was held at the Brindleton church, where all the births, deaths, baptisms and marriages of the Langston family had been. Agnes was beside herself with grief at the unexpected loss of her husband, and her children consoled their widowed mother.
Marigold and Madeline sat at the back of the church, giving the Scott family the space they needed in their grief. Marigold was sad for her dear cousin and her aunt and their loss - but after the funeral, they left Primrose and the family in Brindelton Bay. Marigold knew it would be a long time before she saw Primrose again, and it made her sad to think that she could not be there to support her.
