Royal Navy cocked hat, sword and artifacts of Midshipman A. J. Crichton, 1820s
Midshipman Augustus J. Crichton was the youngest of two sons of Commander James A. S. Crichton and his wife Mary, Augustus was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1812.
He followed in his father’s footsteps, pursuing a naval career. While serving as a midshipman aboard SPARTIATE (74), “when coming down the Maintop…he miss’d his footing, and shocking to relate, fell life less on the Deck” on 16 January 1828 during the ship’s homeward voyage from South America.
His cocked hat or “chapeau bras”, 1820 pattern sword and scabbard with sword-knot and belt were sent home with his other effects, along with a letter of condolence from the ship’s captain, Frederick Warren, a former shipmate and friend of the father.

Rereading The Terror
Chapter Fifty-Four: Des Voeux
Oh gang, we're rapidly running out of living POV characters as you can see. But that means we do get a glimpse into the inner life of the Notorious C(F)DV, a generally sweet lad more akin to his real-life counterpart than to his gremlin-like show one.
Des Voeux is deliriously happy, right off the bat. As well as successfully hunting and gorging themselves on seal out on the pack, his party have spotted real proper leads in the ice with clear water all the way to the Adelaide Peninsula and Back's River. "Everyone could leave Rescue Camp. Everyone there now had a chance at survival." :(((
His joy doesn't last for long, however, as his party returns to camp not to fanfare but to abject misery. The men at Rescue Camp are so despondent that they don't even react to the eight tasty seal carcasses Des Voeux and his men haul behind them. "Did someone die?" asked Charles Frederick Des Voeux
The last men standing with any kind of seniority/rank gather in a tent to fill Des Voeux in, all but one of them smoking like chimneys all the while. They are: Second Mate Edward Couch, First Mate Robert Thomas, Captain of the Hold Joseph Andrews, and Captain of the Maintop Thomas Farr. They've found the bloody carnage that Hickey's party left behind them: "[the remaining bones and flesh] Had knife marks on them" finished Robert Thomas. "Lane and Goddard were butchered by a human being" "Not a human being" said Thomas Farr. "But some vile thing in the shape of a man."
The conversation that follows has definite shades of the E10 Lawful Mutiny scene with Des Voeux cast in Little's role instead. "We have to go after him and the murderers with him," said Des Voeux No one spoke for a moment. Then Robert Thomas said, "Why?"
It's hard to disagree with them really. They discuss the lives that would be wasted in such a battle, mentioning Thomas Johnson again who - as we now know - was sent to track the Mutineers to ensure they really left only to fall bloody victim to them. Des Voeux argues first for Crozier and then for Goodsir but the others reason that they don't even need the surgeon any longer - Tom Hartnell has learned enough to be able to administer what few medicines they have left and as for surgeries... Couch smiled sadly, "Lad, do you really think that anyone who needs actual surgery from this point on in our travels is likely to survive, no matter what?" That ever-so-slightly condescending reference to Des Voeux's youth gets to me especially, it really does! He's just a wee guy!
The assembled men still worry about predation from Hickey and the Mutineers as well and have some choice words to say on the matter: "... He sees all of us as livestock. What if he's just waiting out there beyond the next rise, waiting to attack the whole camp?" "You're turning the caulker's mate into a bogeyman" said Des Voeux. "He done that to his self already." said Andrews, "But not a bogeyman, the Devil. The actual Devil..." I feel like that specific phrasing - his self vs. himself - can do SO much heavy lifting if you want it to. You could interpret it as Hickey not just being corrupted but as devoting/losing his entire sense of self to that corruption. Delicious stuff!
The remaining men decide explicitly that Des Voeux should lead the Expedition entire as he's the highest ranking left among them. He accepts this though he vows to continue to consult closely with the other four in the tent where necessary. Poor Hodgson is mentioned here, in a way that makes me laugh much much more than it really should: "Technically," said Thomas Farr, "Lieutenant George Henry Hodgson is in charge of the expedition now" "Oh, fuck Lieutenant George Henry Hodgson up the arse with a hot poker," said Joseph Andrews, "If the little weasel were to come crawlin' back now, I'd strangle 'im with me own hands and piss on his corpse."
It's not long before Des Voeux faces his first tough decision as official leader and, when it comes down to it, he turns more Le Vesconte than Little. You're not going to like this one, gang, or what it means for poor scurvy-ridden Jopson...! "Here is my first decision as new commander of the Franklin Expedition. When we drag the boats to the ice in the morning, any man who can walk to the boats and get into harness - or even into one of the boats - comes with us... But tomorrow, only those who can walk to the boats will leave Rescue Camp." :(((

Works in progress:
I Saw You And Sealed My Fate: Stede's become resigned to living a quiet life under his parents' thumbs when they introduce him to Benjamin Hornigold and slowly slide him into an engagement. The two of them meet at the engagement dinner and immediately hit it off … (6.5k, 2/5 chapters, rated T)

A Kiss on the Hand: A series of fics based on a prompt list of different types of hand kisses.
Twelvetide Drabbles 2022: Drabbles, drabble multiples, and ficlets written for a fest. Multiple ships and characters!
My one important meta: Stede's presentation and historical standards of masculinity in clothing
One-shots:
Canon compliant one-shots:
The To-Read Stack: Domestic fluff, post-reunion, Stede finds some books missed in the purge.
First Night Home: Stede returns to his ship.
Beside the One You Have Waited For: A missing moment when Ed and Stede are up in the maintop that first night.
What Dreams May Come: Stede has a steamy dream about two Eds on his way back to the Revenge. (Not explicit.)
Sugar Baby: How Lucius got hired by Stede, somewhat by accident.
More Nicer: A missing moment - Stede's conversation with Doug in the kitchen in ep 10.
Waitin' For My Dearie: An exploration of what it's like to be queer and autistic when you don't really realize that's what's going on with you. (Has a happy ending.)
Parched: After Stede leaves home in the middle of the night, Mary grows and changes.
I See A New Horizon: Stede and Ed escape the Academy, and begin to navigate the new changes to their relationship.
Interesting Accounts: Wellington's interrogation on the subject of Stede Bonnet.
An Officer and a Gentleman, or, All Kinds of Situations: Samuel Hornberry hopes that by writing some of his fantasies out, he can escape them.
Momentum: An angsty reunion, illustrated by @feriowind.
there'll be peace of mind: Reunion where Ed and the crew rescue Stede and nurse him back to health.
Proud of You: Ed realizes Stede has a praise kink, and he enjoys playing into it. (Rated E)
no sign of land: Ed/Izzy, the latter topping from the bottom.
Watching Over Olu: Olu is ill, and Jim watches over him.
Rescue Me: Stede is captured.
Take Me In Your Arms: (Sequel to the previous.) Stede's been rescued, and now Ed's in trouble.
Those Savage Beats: Things have gotten stale since Anne and Mary left the seas. Anne takes matters into her own hands. Or rather, teeth.
Fresh Towels: Ed and Stede have retired to run the inn of Ed's dreams. Ed is still nervous about customer service, and Stede does what he can to help.
Alternate universe one-shots:
Going Nautical: A Going Postal AU.
What Else Could I Do (Again): An AU where Stede did stop the Revenge's construction, but still goes to sea.
Making An Entrance: Role reversal AU about the famed Gentleman Pirate and newcomer Edward Teach.
A Perfectly Diabolical Angel: A Good Omens AU.
It Might Be All That You Get: A Ted Lasso AU.
Be Careful, It's My Heart: AU in which Stede gets back to the Revenge when Ed is still in his depression-robe era.
An Offer of Matrimony: A Regency AU where Ed is a rake and Stede is a wallflower, and they have a marriage of convenience.
In the Conjugal Sense: Sequel to the previous - the wedding night!
Drinking Out of the Same Bottle: A Prohibition-era speakeasy AU.
Fiftieth Ficlets (A Miscellany): Five ficlets, written to celebrate a milestone.
Bird of Paradise: A soulmate is a complicated thing. (Stede/Lucius and Stede/Ed.)

makes perfect
mini fic for #HappyEdizzyWeek (originally posted on twitter)
prompt: flashback
They’re lying on their backs on the maintop, sure to be sore the next day from the hard wood on their old bones. Ed is looking up at the stars, Izzy is tracing the tattoos on Ed’s arms with a finger. Scattered between snakes and skulls are a good dozen little x marks.
“Never asked you what these meant,” Izzy says quietly, his touch still following the black lines.
Ed closes his eyes, remembers being a green deckhand, legs too long for his body, head full of wild ideas. Remembers grand plans whispered in the dark to the only one who would listen. Most vividly of all he remembers the way Izzy looked at him in the gloom of the hold.
“Captain Teach and First Mate Hands,” Ed said and Izzy’s eyes burned with something new and bright.
“Promise?”
“Yeah.” Ed knew then and there he wanted nothing more than to etch that contract into their very skin.
“Edward?” Izzy nudges him and Ed opens his eyes.
“They mean I had to practice first, didn’t I?” Ed says it like it’s obvious and points to a rather wonky looking x near his right elbow. “Wouldn’t want that on your face.”
Izzy furrows his brow at that, fondness and confusion trading places in such rapid succession it makes Ed giggle and kiss him right on the cross under his eye. It’s fading a bit with age, but they both know where it is well enough.
Izzy huffs an exasperated laugh.
“All this time and I didn’t even know you could tattoo with both hands,” he finally says. Ed raises a brow, mischief glinting in his eyes.
“I’m Blackbeard. I can do anything.”
Held safe in Ed’s arms, between the night sky above and the ocean all around them, Izzy has never agreed with him more.

ooooo thanks for jumping in friend!!
6. What’s the last line you wrote?
Unsure, but probably the last line of "In the Cover of Rain:"
Izzy set it aside, then sprawled down on the surprisingly-spacious maintop (leave it to Bonnet to make absolutely everything excessive), letting the rain wash over him and trusting its gentle rhythm to keep him from falling asleep on his watch.
13. Do you listen to music while you write?  If yes, what have you been listening to recently?
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't! Depends on my mood and on how easily the words are flowing. I usually just listen to my playlists, if I do, and specifically a lot of my OFMD inspired ones to help with the vibes. My Blackhands one has been great- https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4XtDlmZmatntawiaBdv-oTbXVSBaz0FX
74. Do you have a fic you wish got a bit more love?
Yes!!! I mean, honestly, a lot of them, but if I had to choose just one then "Love You Under My Boot" might be my personal favorite that I've written and it's doing pretty mid for how long it's been out (not that we should care about the number but well, y'know, numbers)

I’m going through my copy of The Lady Tars and this was just incredible.
William Brown (birth name is unknown) may have been the first black woman to serve in the British Royal Navy. While the book here says Brown served for 11 years as captain of the maintop (others say capt. of the foretop), there’s another conflicting account that has her rated as a landsman in the ship’s muster. The Times wrote about her and this is the main source that she was a foretopman. The paper also says that Brown intended to enlist again as a volunteer and it’s completely plausible she did. However, it’s completely unknown either way. What is known indisputably is there was a young black woman from Granada going by the name of William Brown serving on the H.M.S. Queen Charlotte in 1815.
#ripping my hair out coz yes. there was a woman going by William Brown in the navy in 1815#but that’s about all that can be verified#and the fact that there’s this conflicting account from The Times drives me up the walls#I want these people to have been better remembered and personally that’s where the genuine tragedy lies#did she re-enlist? did she have prize money? did she serve for a few weeks or over a decade??#more than likely she wasn’t a capt. of the main or foretop#especially if she really did only serve for a short period#there’s just a sadness in it that we don’t even know her story or really anything about her#that’s why I’ve been reading about all the polly olivers in the navy#but yeah. incredible that she even DID that#I hope she lived a good life#that’s all. I don’t like wild speculation when researching historical persons as tempting as it can be#so I only hope and wish the rest of her life was a good one#also it’s just so important to know these stories or what we can learn of them#a man (or woman) is only dead when their name is no longer spoken#I want to help keep these women alive for as long as I can#also PLEASE double check your sources! I ran into a few instances where person A just makes stuff up about person B’s findings so. please.#I don’t like making assumptions based on what *I* want to be true either so again. there’s very little known about her so take all this#with a few grains of salt#william brown#age of sail#history#women in the navy#(also frustrating coz William Brown was/is a pretty common name…)#I found a couple of other sources talking about her so I’m gonna see if there’s ANYTHING else I can find out#black history#I’ll come back to this and write it clearer. I’m running on fumes#also should add that The Lady Tars is a compilation of auto/biographies of 3 women and this is just from the foreword#but I need to nap rn

Why You Wouldn’t Want to Make Love in the Crow’s Nest
Tumblr media
A short PSA for OFMD fic writers:
The little platform where Stede and Ed share marmalade is not the crow’s nest, it’s the maintop. There are three tops (foretop, maintop, mizzentop), one just above the lower part of each mast.
Tumblr media
The Revenge has no crow’s nest, because it’s not a whaler or an Arctic explorer—and because the crow’s nest wasn’t invented until the 1800s (or reinvented: the ancient Egyptians used something similar, according to Wikipedia).
As you can see in the 1867 illustration above, the crow’s nest was often made out of a barrel, which doesn’t leave much room for shenanigans (though the Swede might feel right at home).
But the most mood-killing part had to be the way it swayed back and forth. Because it was all the way at the end of the mast, every time the ship rocked, the crow’s nest swung like a pendulum. I imagine it felt something like one of those fairground rides you don’t want to ride on an empty stomach.
Not exactly bam-chicka-wow-wow. The tops are a much better choice, especially if your characters like an audience.
That said, it’s your fic, and you should write whatever your little heart desires!

The sailor named Billy Bridle
There was a young sailor named Billy Bridle who climbed the masthead of a ship with a companion on 20 June 1833. Billy was quite nimble and very fast on the maintop so it took his companion a little longer. To make up for this, they both climbed even higher to reach the topmast crosstrees. After they had sitten there for a while, the companion was called down and Billy followed him. But, attempting to slide down the topgallant halyards, Billy burnt his hands so badly that he had to let go and fell to the deck from a good 7m height and died there. As this death was very sudden and unexpected, an autopsy was carried out.
But the result was astonishing. Billy was not a man, but a woman named Rebecca Young. She had already been working as a sailor on a hatch boat on the themse for two years and some of her comrades knew who she really was, but always kept it a secret. Who exactly Rebecca was, where she came from or how old she was is not known, only that she was buried alongside other sailors at St George's Church in Gravesend after her unfortunate accident.
