Marilijah headcanons I need to put somewhere
From the fic Expats Disclaimer: this is fiction. Marina is an OC. No affiliation with Elijah Wood here, as much as I might wish it. Tags: @konjugaltdien @konartiste @from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras
Elijah is really nice, and therefore not good at ending conversations.
They get their groceries delivered, but something is invariably forgotten, or Elijah wants to get Marina a treat, or they want to try cooking something new, so Elijah goes shopping after work and oftentimes gets lost in the grocery store. For him, grocery shopping is a sort of "normaling," since so much in show business is not normal. Unfortunately, this often means that he spends an inordinate amount of time sniffing things in the toiletries aisle, buying five things that he never planned to buy, failing to find half of what he intended to get, and coming home late.
If Elijah comes home and says, "bae, I'm sorry, I messed up," 99% of the time it has to do with the above grocery store scenario.
Marina has generalized anxiety disorder and OCD. Her OCD is, luckily, medicated, but before it was she kept having intrusive thoughts about typos causing people halfway across the world to die. She also has OCPD (obsessive compulsive personalty disorder - basically the equivalent of a "type A personality," which comes in handy for being academically competitive and later a lawyer). Her generalized anxiety makes her worry, irrationally, that her marriage will fall apart, though she will never admit it. No medication or therapy can touch that worry. She has a bag or container for everything, and her bags have bags inside of them.
Elijah, on the other hand, is a very haphazard, disorganized packer. He basically just dumps things in a suitcase and goes.
Marina has it on semi-good authority from Dom Monaghan that at one point, Elijah didn't have a suitcase and simply dumped all of his belongings into a garbage bag, slung it over his shoulder, and got on a plane. Elijah disputes this ever happened.
It took Elijah years not to have crumbs all over the interior of his car.
They hardly ever actually fight, but they like to pretend-escalate fights about petty issues, turning to comical ad-hominem attacks, i.e.
--well, I'm not the one who traveled across the country to get a record from an old hippie in Bumblef-ck, Missouri, only to find out that the record doesn't even exist! --well, at least every inch of my my desk isn't covered with post-it notes, and my post-it notes don't have post-it notes!
They pretend to have arguments in public places. Not particularly loud or raucous ones, since they don't love attracting the paparazzi, but if anyone overhears, said person is likely to walk away deeply and irrevocably perturbed by what they heard. They may or may have not re-enacted the scene in Paris Je T'aime about the couple fighting in Père Lachaise cemetery in front of Oscar Wilde's grave. Except in Marilijah's case, they were fighting in front of Balzac's grave, and Elijah kept saying Balzac's name wrong. You know how. ;)
Mr. Nisile's opinion on the above: Those two are completely allergic to being normal, aren't they? Me: well, yeah, that's kind of the point.

Piastri and Gasly to make debuts for new teams in Abu Dhabi test | 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix
McLaren and Alpine have reached agreements to ensure their new drivers for next season can have their first runs with them before the year is over. Oscar Piastri and Pierre Gasly will drive for McLaren and Alpine respectively in the post-season test at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. The two teams were involved in a dispute over Piastri’s services which was resolved in McLaren’s favour earlier this year. Team principal Andreas Seidl confirmed they have now reached terms under which Piastri will join the team between the season finale and end-of-year test. He has already conducted a run in one of the team’s old cars at Paul Ricard in France. “We reached a settlement agreement with all parties involved which enabled us to put Oscar in an old car last week in Paul Ricard and do a private test,” said Seidl. “This will enable us as well to then officially start working with Oscar on Monday after the last race in Abu Dhabi, which enables us then as well to put him in the car, in the current car, at the young driver test in Abu Dhabi, which is something we are very much looking forward to, which is great for us and for Oscar.” Seidl said it is too early to draw any conclusions about Piastri’s potential based on his first run for the team. “Running an old car alone on a track there’s not too much to read into it,” he said. “In the end, it was a good start from Oscar together with us and that’s pretty much it for the moment.” Alpine originally announced Piastri as its replacement for Fernando Alonso next year, but was stunned to discover its reserve driver had signed to race for McLaren. They have instead hired Pierre Gasly from AlphaTauri, who will drive for them in ther Yas Marina test. “The season’s nearly at the end and it was time to come to an agreement and we did and we’re happy that Oscar can start his McLaren career after the last race in Abu Dhabi and do the test,” said Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer. “We will be doing the same with Pierre, we will be putting Pierre in the car in Abu Dhabi and we’ll get working on our driver pairing, get his feedback and get his initial thoughts on our car this year and start to understand the things he likes and dislikes and hopefully be able to make some changes on next year’s car too with Pierre’s input in mind.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix Browse all 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net/

01. The Jump
Mentions: @tessa-lisbon @nova-lisbon @cecilylisbons @diego--cruz @brodiebalcoin @chuck-diaz
Location: Dead Man’s Quarry
Notes: Honestly, way too many feelings for a preface to jumping off a cliff, but...
From the moment they'd all piled into the family car and headed down to the quarry, Marina had not been impressed with herself. She was prepared of course - riding around for weeks with towels at the ready for the jump once she'd found out that her sisters would be making the jump as well. Nova, she could have figured, but Cecily was a bit of a surprise, but that was alright, considering she'd seen the shock on her sister's faces (even if they'd tried to hide it) when she let it be known she'd be jumping as well. It came out casually, with a simple 'me too' and she wouldn't be surprised if her sisters figured she was only jumping because they were, to look out for them, but the truth was she'd come to the conclusion she'd be participating before that, and yet she kept her mouth shut and let them think that. Despite hating feeling like the nag of a sister she felt like she was, there was a comfort in it that she hated made her place in their lives feel safer, so she said nothing to dispute their assumptions.
Marina obviously loved her sisters enough to do anything for them, that had been proven, perhaps too much, and she couldn't stop doing it on instinct if she tried (she never would) but the truth was, the jump was about her. Her pregnancy scare had shaken Marina up more than even Tessa knew -- she'd encountered some thoughts and feelings she tended to bury way way down; things she considered ugly, like mourning a life unlived the way she used to fantasize in her room surrounded by her sisters. Sure, she talked a big game about how when they got out they could do whatever they wanted, but the real world proved her wrong - she hadn't even gotten all of her sisters out, and they'd fractured for a time before she had enough resources to bring them together again. In the process, Marina developed a sort of tunnel vision that warped her into a person she didn't even like all that much, a person who too much resembled her mother.
The prospect of having a baby came right on the heels of what Marina thought could be a chance to dig into the person she really was, the person she thought she could like and not the person she had to grow into being - a person her sisters could like and not just love; not just a domineering presence to told them what to do.
"Here, take this flare, you're number 7. Lucky." The guy handing out the flares said, "You don't need my name?" Marina asked, having just watched him ask the name of the person who was in front of her, "I know your name, don't even worry about it. You're Ma---"
"Okay, thanks." Marina said, cutting him off, grabbing her flair, and walking away in almost one fluid motion, for some reason annoyed that their reputation was still in tact. How was she supposed to change how she was perceived if people didn’t even let her speak?
She wasn't sure if she should head directly up to the cliff just yet, so she looked around for her sisters who all seemed to be doing just fine without her - Nova, arguably the most independent among them had gravitated towards the guy Marina recognized as the one she'd gone on a date with, and Cecily was talking to Tessa, who was no doubt in good hands, her big sister being very eager to be just that. So that left Marina alone with the question she'd been mulling over in her head for months, since the last time she'd gone to therapy (right before she stopped, because the question fucked her up way too much) - She was a good sibling to her sisters, a good partner to her boyfriend, a good model to people who booked her, a good friend to Brodie and Chuck, but who was she to herself when she was alone without any of that?
That question is what drove her to want to enter the contest, not to watch out for her sisters (though it was a benefit), not to win a bunch of money (which again, would be nice), but to see what she could do and who she could be without a real motivation besides herself.
So she headed up, taking her time while the party surrounding her got more crazy with every shotgun of a beer and flash of a phone. When she got to the top, she found an empty section on the edge of the cliff and looked down. It was a steep drop to be certain, and if she would land in one peace wasn't at all guaranteed, and still she found that she wasn't scared. It wouldn’t, after all be the first time Marina jumped head first into unknown circumstances.

After her marriage with Frank Randall has failed and Claire Beauchamp flees from her violent husband, she finds refuge in the house of the Fraser/Murray family in Berlin-Wilhelmshorst. But then tensions arise between Britain (which has since left the EU) and some EU member states. All holders of an English passport are required to leave EU territory within six weeks … and suddenly Claire’s fate looks more uncertain than ever.
This story was written for the #14DaysofOutlander event, hosted by @scotsmanandsassenach

Chapter 11: 14 Men (7)
"I hope you know that you are very welcome, not only because you are giving us this information or as a medical professional, but as a human being. And I hope you'll be able to settle in."
Claire nodded. Then she reached out her hand and put it on the old man's right hand.
"Thank you, Mr. Groide. I appreciate it."
"You can call me Ferdinand, if you like."
    "Sure, Ferdinand, I'm Claire."
    "Thanks, Claire."
"Well, after that eventful work meeting, let's have a nice drink, shall we? How about a whisky?"
    Jamie looked at them expectantly.
    Claire nodded.
    "I'd love one."
    Groide shook his head.
"Jamie, you know I don't drink that stuff. I'll have a vodka, please."
"You see Claire," said Jamie with an ironic undertone, "you might as well learn something about the Germans here. When it comes to alcohol, they have no taste."
He handed her a glass of whisky.
"He's right, Claire. And remember one more thing: We have absolutely no sense of humor either."
The men began to giggle and Jamie had to stop for a moment before he handed the glass of vodka to Groide.
"You may say what you usually say about my taste in alcohol, Jamie," Groide then said jokingly.
Jamie looked at Claire with a grin.
"He spent too much time with Russians, they spoiled his taste."
"Sa sdarovje!" was all Groide would answer. Then he turned to Claire again:
"You said earlier that you intend to ask for a divorce from your husband?"
"Yes, I do. I hope it's also possible from here."
    Groide looked at her thoughtfully.
"Do you object to Claire's request, Ferdinand?"
"No, I understand the request very well. I'm just worried it might put MI5 on to you, Jamie."
A mild shock drove Claire through and she nearly choked on the whisky she'd just taken.

"I think there's a way we can avoid this. Ever since Claire spoke of filing for divorce, I've been thinking about who could help her."
"Well? Who did you have in mind?" Groide asked.
"I have come to the conclusion that I would recommend the service of Stephanie Svart to her," Jamie replied and turned to Claire.
"She is an excellent specialist family law attorney and the law firm she works for has offices in several Western European countries. I don't know 100%, but I would be very much mistaken if they didn't also have cooperation with American law firms. They could try to do it through their Amsterdam office ... That would move the focus away from Berlin and into one of the countries that is currently in a very tense relationship with the UK ... I don't think they would send anyone there because of the marital disputes of an MI5 employee like Randall. If you add to that the fact that Claire fears repression from her violent husband, you don't even have to give a home address. You can use the address at the law firm."
Groide nodded smiling and held his empty glass out to Jamie.
        "Well thought out."
"Who is this lawyer?" Claire asked.
"We've known her a long time. My Uncle Jared had a girlfriend here in Berlin, or rather, a fiancée. Her name is Violetta Chambeau. They were supposed to get married, but then my uncle's illness came along and his death ... But 'Aunt Vio' is still family. She's the one trough whom my uncle met Stephanie Svart. They both studied at the same university. Mrs. Svart is a specialist in family and inheritance law. We trust her, and if you don't mind, then..."
"Well, I don't know any lawyers here, and if she's trustworthy... no, I don't mind if you make contact."
"I've already made an appointment with her, just in case. We could meet her tomorrow morning."
        Claire nodded.
"The sooner I get this over with, the better."
She reached for her whisky and took a big sip.
        "What do you think, Ferdinand?"
        "I think it's a good idea."
Suddenly, there was a knock at the library door. Jamie shouted, "Come in!" and Helene Ballin appeared.
"Mr. Groide, out of your jacket in the hall there comes the sound of a bell. I assume it's your smartphone?"
Groide jumped up and hurried out of the room.

About ten minutes later, he came back.
"Excuse me, but this call was important."
The old man sat down, then he looked at Jamie with a serious look:
"A Carl from Boston called the office at ‘In Vino Veritas’ and asked to speak to you..."
Now Jamie and Claire looked at him in shock.
"I've convinced him that I'm a good friend of yours and that he can talk to me too."
"What did he say?" Jamie asked, his voice giving way his tension.
"He said a man named Randall called the hotel limo service and asked for a specific car..."
Claire's face changed color in one fell swoop. Completely pale and with eyes filled with fear she looked at Jamie. The mention of Randall's name, and even more so the fact that he was obviously picking up her trail, had brought fear back into her life within seconds.
"What happened? What did he say?" Jamie asked.
"They put Randall's call through to Carl because they knew he was your driver. Carl told Randall, that he drove you to his home, as Randall already knew, and then to the Boston mariana.”
Jamie and Claire looked at each other first and then at Groide.
        "The marina?" Claire asked incredulously.
"Yes, Carl felt that it was none of this man's business where he took you. He didn’t know him and he felt his passengers had a right to discretion. That's why he told Randall that he drove you to the quay next to the ‘Yacht Haven Inn & Mariana’. There, he said, you boarded a large yacht. This yacht arrived at the quay at the same time as the limousine and left immediately after both of you went on board. Randall asked him if he had seen the name of the yacht or if he could remember the flag. Carl replied that he had not paid attention to it. But he assumed that it was a private yacht.
Claire closed her eyes. Her body relaxed, if only slowly. Jamie smiled. Groide remained silent for a few moments. He knew that the two people sitting in front of him would have to digest this shock first. Then Jamie stood up and filled the glasses with whisky and vodka again. After they had drunk in silence, Groide resumed the conversation:
"Well, that went well once again. At least that's how it looks at the moment. But it's not impossible that Randall recognized you, Jamie. So, for the time being, you won't be taking any assignments outside of Europe... who do you suggest as a replacement?"
"The best man we have. My adopted son."
        "When will he be ready?"
"I'll call him in the morning and get back to you first thing."
"Well, I hope he agrees to take over your duties."

When Claire and Jamie got off the elevator an hour later and walked down the hall to their rooms, she asked, whispering:
"Does your comment about Ferdinand's relationship with the Russians have any deeper meaning?"
"You mean, if Ferdinand really was involved with Russians?"
        "Hm hm."
"I don't know, it's a joke between us. Ever since I first met him, I've tried drinking whisky with him. But he always refused, and so far he's stuck to vodka. But I wouldn't be surprised if he had dealings with Russians as part of his service. As far as I know, he came to Berlin to study. That must have been a little over 40 years ago. So it was still the Cold War period."
They had stopped at the door of Claire's room.
"Don't worry, Jamie, I'm not here to question you."
"Oh, I don't think that's top secret information."
He looked at her and his eyes got caught on her dress.
        "Claire..."
        "Yeah?"
"What you did tonight... it was remarkable. So much acumen, intelligence. It will have... certainly... taken a lot of strength from you. And tomorrow will be no less exhausting... will you be able to sleep? Is there anything else I can do for you?”
"Thank you, but I think I’m fine.”
"If there's anything else... I'll be right here.”
He pointed to the door of his room.
"I'll leave the phone on, just in case.”
"Thanks, Jamie. You're very kind. Good night."
        "Good night, Claire."
She opened the door and entered her room. When she had closed the door behind her, she held her hand on the door leaf for a moment, as if she could still maintain contact with Jamie in this way. This man touched something inside her. Something that was buried deep under years of neglect, harshness and unkindness that she had experienced through Frank Randall. For the first time since the death of her Uncle Lambert, she felt that someone else really cared about her. Claire went to her bed, pulled out her pyjamas from under her pillow and changed. Then she went to the small desk that stood under one of the windows and turned on the small lamp that was placed  at the right side. From one of her suitcases she took a diary. She sat down at the desk and began to make notes about the evening and about the conversation with Ferdinand Groide. An hour later, Claire closed the book and put it back into the suitcase. She sat down on the bed and reached for her handbag, which she had left on the nightstand. Claire opened it and pulled a zipper attached to the lining. Another zipper was attached to the bottom of this inner bag. When one opened it, you entered a compartment that was hidden in the bottom of the handbag and not visible from the outside. Claire reached into this compartment and then looked thoughtfully at the six silver USB flash drives on her hand. What had Frank once said? You can't let all your cards go at once. She had agreed with Frank only on a few things, but on this point she had to agree with him. Slowly she put the USB flash drives back and closed the handbag. After she had freshened up a bit in the bathroom and put a big glass of mineral water on the bedside table, she lay down and turned off the light. Claire looked up at the ridge of the roof. Through the glass she could see the night sky. She wondered if Jamie was now lying in his bed and looking up there as well. With this thought she fell asleep.

Admittance pt.5
Guzmán x Reader
Request by anon: heyyy, can you do a part 5 of the admittance series with guzman? i love it so much!!!
Gif is not my own
Requests are open🤍
Tumblr media
“Alright, why have you bought me an ice hockey puck?” You laugh as Guzmán walks through the door carrying the food bags with him
“Pick it up,” He encourages, “Hold it.”
You look at him in complete bewilderment as you lift the object into your hand, “What have you done?”
“Nothing!” He laughs, setting the bags onto the table as he comes to sit beside you, “But that... is how much the baby weighs at the minute. Isn’t that crazy?!”
You look at him and watch as the creases appear beside his eyes and his dimples become prominent on his faultless skin. He looks so focused at the puck in your hand like it held just as much life as your swollen belly.
“A hockey puck huh? That doesn’t sound so scary,” You joke.
You were now at sixteen weeks of your pregnancy and things had been going smoothly for the most part. Although it terrified you that you’d be nearing the halfway point and were yet to figure out any system that would actually work for both of you. You hadn’t thought about living arrangements, what you’d do about school, finances, any of it. For now, you were happy with watching Guzmán’s face light up at the slightest mention of the baby.
“What food did you get?” You ask him, reaching over to peer into the bags.
“Sushi!” Guzmán grins, standing up to get the food once again after he snaps out of his distraction, “I heard salmon is good for pregnancy, and you love Japanese food - hence, sushi.”
Guzmán, as always, hadn’t once strayed from his promise of being with you through everything. But what had surprised you most was how conscious he’d been about everything. He made sure to do as much research as he could on everything you were going through and tried to give himself an understanding of anything he could do to help. Even Ander had mentioned how surprised he was to see it.
“Come on, eat your food,” He encourages once you realise how distracted you’d been simply thinking about him.
He’d been nothing short of perfect for this entire time and it never failed to release some of your fears every time he’d give you a bright smile and tell you about how excited he was to meet his ‘mini me’
“So, what’s the plan for today?” Guzmán cocks a brow.
You should tell him that the two of you need to discuss the important stuff but it felt impossible to do when he was sat so close and things were going so well with the two of you. You werent together, and nothing had happened that was more than that kiss at the hospital. You were just a lot closer now. It wasn’t strange for him to wrap an arm around you whilst you were watching a film or for his hand to find yours as you were walking. Nothing had been said, but those little pocketed moments were never unwelcome.
“Movie day?” You cock a brow, “I think Ander and Omar are around so we could watch something all together.”
“Yeah, okay,” He smiles, “But I’m not letting Omar pick the film again.”
- - - - - -
It’s over the next few days that you realise more and more that you should really start to talk to Guzmán about your plans and what would happen once all of this pregnancy had finished. No matter how well he’d been acting, your situation wasn’t perfect. You’d be living in separate houses, he’d still be in education and you still hadn’t figured out if you’d be able to graduate from home or not.
“What are you doing for Christmas this year Guzmán?” Ander asks as all of you finish decorating the tree in your lounge.
It was a little late really, with Christmas only being a few days away, but the intention was there. It would just be you guys for Christmas this year at home - your Mum, you and Ander, and Omar.
“It’s just me and Mum at home this year, I didn’t really care much for visiting my grandparents,” Guzmán explains.
The two of you had already had this conversation. He didn’t want to visit them mainly because he was reluctant to be too far from you. You’d tried to dispute but his mind was unchanging.
“How about you join us here?” Ander’s Mum suggests, “You’re more than welcome.”
Guzmán looks a little shocked and his eyes fall down to you like he’s looking for some sort of confirmation.
“Yeah, definitely, why don’t you ask your Mum?” You smile.
This felt like the closest thing he’d had to a real team in a long time. For so long he’d been flicking between all of the wrong people and never really finding anyone real. Now he had you and this weird little formation of family that somehow was starting to work.
“Okay, thank you, that would be great. I’ll speak to her when I’m home but I’m sure she’d be more than happy,” Guzmán nods to your mother, “Thank you.”
You turn back to the tree and fix one of the lights that had fallen out of line. Guzmán stutters in his movements and sets down a bauble on the side, wiping his hands on his trousers.
“Excuse me,” He shuffles past you with a hand on your back and steps past the group to walk towards the stairs.
You find yourself following him a little while later when he’s not back downstairs and you instead find him sat on the edge of your bed staring at nothing but the room around him.
“Are you okay, Guzmán?” You frown, pausing in the doorway - you’d never seen this weird quiet side of him before.
He glances up at the sound of your voice and smiles, “Yeah, I’m good, sorry. Just thinking.”
Your hands settle over your bump as you stand, still getting used to the strange offset balance it gave you.
“I guess with Christmas coming up, things just feel really real. I’ve hardly been the happiest guy recently, Marinas diagnosis, my father, losing Marina, Lu, Polo, Ander... I feel like I’ve just been keeping afloat in this whole mess around me. And now? It feels like I’ve never been so happy,” He laughs a little, “This isn’t anything I expected from my final year at school, but God, it feels like the best chance I’ve got at feeling like I’m worth something.”
You move over and sit beside him on the bed, taking his hand and placing it over yours on your growing belly, “Guzmán, when a woman’s pregnant, all everyone can talk about is her job in it all. Praising her for it, asking how she’s doing, what they can do, how she’s feeling... nobody ever talks about you in all of this. You’ve been incredible! Always. And that should be more than enough for you to prove yourself to yourself. You shouldn’t just feel like you’re worth something, because to that little hockey puck in there, you’re worth everything.”
A small tear slips out from the side of his eye at your words as he glances down at your belly and emphasises all the love he can possibly muster into his gaze.
“I’ll do everything I can, you know that. And when we get round to moving you into my home, I’ll make sure you’re all settled and I-“
“When I move in?” You raise your brows, pushing away from him a little.
“Well yeah, I just figured that you’d be moving in with me and my Mum. There’s hardly room for me and the baby here, with the rest of you too,” He defends, “Didnt we...”
“Guzmán we never said anything about moving in together. And certainly not about me leaving my family to live with you. Do you think that’s a good idea?” You question, watching as his hand falls away from you.
“You think I’m just going to live apart from my own child?”
“I think that we need to discuss this properly before we make any decisions that aren’t in everyone’s best interests.”
It looks like he practically deflates beside you as his shoulders drop and his eyes fall to the floor, “Yeah, maybe we should talk about it. Seems like we both have pretty different ideas of how this is all going to work.”
“Guzmán don’t be like that...” You sigh, going to reach out for him but stopping as he stands up abruptly, “Guzmán! You can’t be serious?”
“I should head home,” He nods, running a hand over his hair, “You’re still coming to dinner tomorrow? My Mum really wants to see you.”
“Yeah, of course I’ll be there,” You reply quietly, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
He doesn’t leave you with a kiss on your forehead, or a small goodbye aimed at your bump, he just leaves. And you stay sat on that bed just as deflated as he had been. Was this the first sign of this evident demise? And had you caused it all by being so reluctant to break the pattern of your comfortable haven with Guzmán?
- - - - - -
As promised, you arrive at Guzman’s house the following afternoon for dinner with him and his Mum. It’s a relief when she opens the door instead of him and you’re not sure why.
“Oh honey! Look at you!” She beams, wrapping you in a cautious hug as she tries at avoid pressure on your stomach, “Come in, come in!”
You step into the house and hand over the flowers you’d brought with you, “These are for you. I’m sorry I’ve been taking up so much of Guzman’s time.” You joke.
“Oh don’t be silly,” She brushes you off, “I’ve never seen the boy so happy, and I’ve never heard him talk about someone so much!”
You’re thankful he’s not around to see you blush.
“He’s just finishing getting ready, you know what he’s like,” His mother rolls her eyes, “Feel free to go and find him, I’ll put these in water. Dinner will be ready in about half an hour.”
“Amazing, thank you,” You smile as she heads off into the kitchen.
This house, though smaller than their last one, was definitely nicer than your own. The lounge was huge and you could already imagine it being littered with toys and baby mats and more colour than this modern interior ever held. You make your way upstairs and try to find Guzmán before dinner to maybe try and clear up some of the grey area from yesterday.
You pass his bedroom and find it completely empty, passing onto the next room that holds your attention more than any other. It’s one of the smaller rooms of the house but it’s nearly completely empty. There’s only a small wardrobe on one wall that you find yourself walking over to. When you open the door, your heart drops a little. Hanging up in the bare cupboard is one single outfit, a baby outfit. It’s a baby grow that seems fearfully tiny, in a pale yellow that’s decorated with small bees swirling in flight paths over the material.
“You weren’t supposed to see that,” Guzmáns voice comes from behind you and it instantly makes you flinch and turn around to see him.
“When did you buy this?” You ask, hands brushing delicately over the tiny body of material.
“About a week after you told me you were pregnant. I needed to clear my head, rethink a lot of things, and try to process everything. And I stumbled upon this little shop in town and I bought that,” He explains, “I was going to keep it until... I don’t know I guess, just later.”
You smile a little and close the wardrobe doors behind you, “And this room?”
“The nursery,” He nods, “I know it’s pretty far away but I had a spare evening so I cleared out this room and thought I’d at least have it ready for when I can buy some furniture, that wardrobe was one that Marina had when she was a baby - I just put it in here so I’d have somewhere proper to keep that outfit.”
You keep silent. How had he become so unbelievably committed to this whole process?
“Even if you’re not living here, I can still use this place when the baby comes to stay with me. Maybe a couple of nights a week if that’s not too much trouble.”
Those words were enough to break your heart into two. This was your baby just as much as it was his. He shouldn’t feel like he isn’t seeing his own child simply because of your imperfect circumstances. But could you really commit to living platonically with someone you hadn’t exactly been seeing as a friend recently?
“I’m sorry for what I said about living together Guzmán. I was just surprised that you’d thought that far ahead, and living together is a big commitment.”
He scoffs, “No bigger than having a child together.”
“It just doesn’t seem like a good idea in the long run. You’re going to eventually want to bring girls home, a girl you’ve met at the club or something. And what? Your summer fling is sleeping in the next room with the baby you have together?” You shake your head, “That’s not fair on you.”
“I don’t want to bring girls back. I’m going to be a father (Y/n), I don’t care about picking up some chick from the club for a one night stand,” He defends himself, “I want to commit to this, to you and to that baby. And I want to be there for you.”
You swallow the lump in your throat, “You really think it could work?”
He laughs gently, “It would be like having our own place. We have our own kitchen here, bathroom, two bedrooms. My Mum would be living in the same house but it’s basically like living separately. Nobody else would be up at three am when the baby won’t stop crying, and nobody would be listening to your snoring at 4 in the morning like I have to listen to.”
You chuckle as you feel tears brew behind your eyes, “You’re so sweet, Guzmán. Are you sure though?”
“No. I don’t think either of us are sure about anything. But I know we’ll give it our best shot. And I want nothing more than to be by your side to shoot that shot with you.”
“Okay,” You smile, “Okay, I’ll move in.”
Guzmán’s face brightens up instantly as he moves forward and wraps his arms around you, holding his torso back to avoid your belly, “I’ll do everything I can (Y/n).”
You let out a shaky breath. You wouldn’t let yourself fall for him. You couldn’t possibly. But his touch seemed to now have much more of an effect than it ever had done in summer. Now, it made your heart practically flip in your chest.
You reluctantly had to believe that he didn’t feel the same. Even if he felt like he’d pass out if his heart raced any faster. In learning to love that baby inside of you, he’d found himself falling impossibly in love with the girl who’d hold the other half of that baby’s life.
- - - - - -
Dinner was a success and you ended up sleeping round in Guzman’s room that night. It didn’t feel strange to share a bed anymore and also never felt strange when his arms fell around you as his hands placed themselves on your bump. When you wake up the following morning, Guzmán is nowhere to be seen. It’s far too cold already on this winter morning so you find yourself wrapping one of his blankets around you as you walk through the house to find him. It’s even stranger when you find him stood outside by the pool, topless at that.
“What are you doing? It’s like two degrees out here!” You wince at the chilling breeze, tugging the blanket tighter around you as it also formed a hood over your head.
“Just getting in a quick morning swim, can’t risk losing this body,” He jokes as he turns around to face you, “Did you sleep well?”
“Better, thank you,” You nod, “Until your early morning swim had to disturb me. The bed’s too cold if you’re not sleeping in it too.”
He looks down so you don’t see how his cheeks light up with a blushing glow.
“Come on then, get on with your swim so we can go back inside,” You encourage as you waddle sluggishly over to one of the loungers.
You drop down onto one of them and groan as you try to snuggle into the warmth of the blanket around you as much as possible.
“Are you sure you’re going to be able to control yourself?” Guzmán cocks a brow, “Last time we went swimming in my pool, you certainly couldn’t.”
“Can we please not talk about the ongoings of summer? We all know you were much less capable of controlling yourself compared to me.”
He laughs and it injects a bright, dimple displaying grin onto his face, “Alright, okay. It was your fault though (Y/l/n).”
You scoff, “Lets just not bring up summer.”
He falls serious for just a moment, “Do you regret it? Everything that happened over those few months?”
“What?” You laugh, “Why would I forget it?”
He shrugs and fiddles with the material of the towel in his hands, “You could’ve easily found yourself a boyfriend over summer, not just someone you were sneaking around with.”
“I didn’t want a boyfriend,” You respond, “We both knew what we were getting ourselves into.”
“Yeah, I just don’t think we realised what we’d get out of it,” He smirks, but it falls slightly.
He didn’t just mean the baby. He meant that gut wrenching feeling that made his heart beat, his hands shake, his mind race - that feeling of falling in love with you.
“Well, Guzmán, Id gladly do that summer all over again,” You assure him, crossing your legs on the lounger, “Now get on with your swim.”
Guzmán takes the chance to look at you properly now that you’re not looking back. You weren’t the same girl he’d been on that fling with. You aren’t that girl wearing a bikini at his poolside that he’d learnt to easily untie the strings of at the best and worst moments. Not the girl that would make sarcastic comments as your hair was dripping wet from the pool and your damp skin glistened with a darker glow in the setting sun. Not all of that beauty that he’d convinced himself was only surface deep. You were now seventeen weeks pregnant, wrapped up in the thickest blanket you could find with messy hair and puffy eyes. And it felt like he’d never seen something he could adore so much. Would that make this whole situation better or worse? He feared knowing the answer to that.
“Guzmán Nunier Osuna, either jump into that water or come and warm me up because it’s fucking freezing out here and I don’t want to be out here for longer than I have to,” You pout through your makeshift blanket covering, your eyes remaining shut.
With a shaky breath, mainly from his fear of his own feelings, Guzmán finds it impossible to say no to the latter of those options. His morning swim could wait for another day. For now, you were sat outside his house at a far too early hour on a winter morning, and he couldn’t possibly disappoint you. His arms wrap around you and all he can think of is giving you the Christmas present he’d been waiting for far too long to gain the courage to give. When Christmas rolled around, it would be the final push he needed. And it was sink or swim for whatever your response would be.
How could you possibly sink? Guzmán had already pulled you under from the moment you’d first looked at those eyes and saw more than you’d ever seen in anyone. From first being admitted into this life you’d never prepared for, the last thing you’d expected was to find someone within it all that your heart would want to hold onto forever.
(((I’m sorry but I love this series so much!!! Please send me through your thoughts - let’s chat about this chapter!)))

From Bridgerton to Hamilton: A History of Color-Conscious Casting in Period Drama
https://ift.tt/2IQI6Ak
Note: This Bridgerton article contains no book or series plot spoilers.
Bridgerton is a unique mix of Shonda Rhimes’ dedication to Black representation on American television and the British period drama tradition. White critics may dismiss this trend as unnecessary “pandering” to Black and POC viewers, but the number of productions designed around reforming all white-casting has increased over the past 10 years—and has only added to the success of the genre. The number one reason driving demand for diverse period dramas is from Black and POC fans of the genre. The impact of seeing an actor that looks like you can’t be measured in ratings or clicks online. Despite facing years of content and fandom overtly or covertly claiming that the universal themes in period dramas are not “for us”; the tide is starting to turn as fans use social media and the power of ratings to ask for more representation.
A quick overview of recent Regency England-set productions leaves much to be desired. Although the 2018 Amazon Prime/ITV miniseries and the 2005 movie adaptations of Vanity Fair left in West Indian and Jewish heiress Miss Schwarz, she is one of many supporting characters. PBS/ITV’s Sanditon, on the one hand, improved representation by prominently featuring Georgiana Lambe. However, her story was a huge disappointment to Black and POC fans who expected her plotline to end happily or at least have her conflicts resolved.
There have been three paths traditionally towards increasing diversity in period dramas: 1) blind casting (also called racebending), where Black and POC actors play traditionally white characters adding original Black characters to existing fictional works, and 2) Own Voices, where Black and POC writers share their own stories. These two are not mutually exclusive, but, in the world of British period drama, the former is more frequently used, as the bedrock of the genre is adapting existing novels and plays by white authors.
The theoretical framework for inclusive casting begins in the world of staging period drama at the theater. In Shakespeare’s day, men played women’s roles as women were not allowed to appear on stage. The genre evolved in later centuries to allow women to appear on stage, but the tradition of having actors who didn’t match the original descriptions remained. This is even true of his history plays where real women royalty were characters. Ira Aldridge in the 1840s was the first Black actor in Britain to play traditionally white roles on stage. Later on, in the 19th century, several stage adaptations of Jane Austen’s works had all-women casts.
Fast forward to 2015, when Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton redefined what it meant to cast inclusively in modern period dramas by using actors descended from slavery and colonialism to play the Founding Fathers. Every aspect of the musical was designed to reframe the existing narrative of early American history. The costume design also reflected the identities of the actor by featuring braids, locs, and textured hairstyles over 18th century white hairstyles. Rap lyrics conveyed to the audience the names, dates, and other descriptions of the Revolutionary War. The old adage that someone must “look the part” to play a biographical role was thrown out the window.
Hamilton proved that many of the old excuses used to sideline diverse period dramas no longer held to be true. Millions of white people listened to the cast album, brought tickets, or streamed the movie on Disney+. UK theater patrons flocked to the West End cast of Hamilton, as well, before the pandemic. Memes, parodies, and more on social media proved that white audiences can conceptualize historical figures as fictional characters while also knowing the real figures looked and acted quite differently. Fans of the show pushed Ron Chernow’s biography back onto the bestseller lists as they wanted to read what really happened.
The first clear impact the show had on the genre of British period drama comes from a mystery. Daisy Coulam, Grantchester’s head screenwriter, cited reading an interview with Miranda as the inspiration behind the exit plotline for James Norton’s character Sidney Chambers. UK crime dramas  For those unfamiliar with the series, Grantchester is a mystery procedural based on a series of books about a 1950s crime-solving Anglican vicar by James Runcie. Norton’s exit plotline in Season 4 generated an original to the show character named Violet who was the daughter of a visiting African-American preacher. Violet was an original character who forced the audience to consider that the US civil rights movement indeed reached their treasured vision of the lily-white British countryside. Coulam already laid the groundwork for Violet in earlier seasons by abandoning large sections of the original novel timeline and but keeping the case of the week focused on addressing 1950’s social issues. Fans heavily criticized Coulam’s writing for style and pacing, but her imagination clearly indicates that Hamilton’s proven formula for disrupting established historical aesthetics can just as easily be applied to fictional depictions of the UK’s past as blind casting a biography-based series or depicting real figures of Black British history.
Other period dramas released in recent years share traces of Hamilton’s impact but in a more thematic and less direct different way. Some shows turned real Black British figures into fictional characters. Lina (Stephanie Levi-John) and Oviedo (Aaron Cobham) on The Spanish Princess are composites of Catherine of Aragon’s servants and several famous Black Tudors. Catherine “Kitty” Despard (Kerri McClean) in Poldark Season 5 was a forgotten Black British figure added in to expand the world outlined in the novels. Victoria featured Ira Aldridge (Ashley Zhangazha) mentioned earlier, plus spotlighted the Queen’s adopted daughter Sarah-Forbes Bonetta and Cuffay (C.J. Beckford) as the leader of the proto-socialist Chartists. Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott) on Call the Midwife was not mentioned in the original memoirs, but she was added to represent the Caribbean nurses from the Windrush Generation of UK immigrants.
Racebent casting also increased. Dev Patel’s role as the title character in the movie The Personal History of David Copperfield proved that Dickens adaptations could indeed include POC casts without changing the fundamental plot and message. PBS/BBC’s Les Miserables miniseries also extended the Broadway tradition of casting Black actors in traditionally white coded classic literature characters. Hulu’s The Great featured Sacha Dhawan and several Black actors as Russian nobility, politicians, and courtiers.
All of these series, however, carefully attempted to stay grounded in recreating the original source material or invested in faithfully replicating the era they were set in. Bridgerton radically expands upon Hamilton’s formula by divorcing inclusive casting from any desire to accurately recreate historical events, eras, or figures. Romance, fantasy, and social/familial drama are universal themes that don’t depend on having a white-dominant vision of society. Quinn’s original novel series sparingly referred to historical events during the Regency Era. Her focus was on creating a world where the most important events were balls and weddings. More Dukes and other holders of inherited titles exist in her vision of the Ton (the most elite members of Regency society) than in reality. Historians would likely dispute her characterization of the elite social season as well. Characters’ internal dialogue is in modern English peppered with regional accents and slang. They rarely lampshade or criticize the way of society beyond their romantic desires and family obligations. Readers see the physical intimacy on the page Austen never mentioned. This literary environment is ripe for inclusive casting on screen.
The most critical flip in characterization is Simon, Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page). His character is the romantic hero of the first book in the series The Duke and I and is the character that set fan expectations high for future novels. Simon having visibly African features and yet being an object of desire is incredibly subversive in a genre where white beauty standards dominate hetero and homosexual fiction.
Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh), Simon’s godmother, is an elder stateswoman and a twist on the battle-ax aunt trope popular in period dramas. She isn’t as caustic and insulting as some other famous widows and spinsters but she commands authority and a mansion filled with people to perform all the hard labor. Lady Danbury is even implied to be slightly higher in status than her white counterparts with children of marrying age Lady Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and Lady Portia Featherington (Polly Walker).
Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuve) being played by a biracial woman is actually a subtle Easter Egg to existing history debates. Many have debated if her portraits were airbrushed to disguise African features. A few years ago, a documentary established her African ancestry is via the Portuguese royals. All of her scenes involve petting her Pomeranian, demanding to know the latest gossip, and manipulating the gentry into doing her bidding.
The miniseries doesn’t end the racial diversity with those at the highest social rank or even at the lower orders of domestic servants. Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker) is a cousin of the Featheringtons and represents the “poor relation” character popular in stories based on the British gentry. A Black modiste (dressmaker) trained in French fashion makes all of the dresses the characters wear. Will Mondrich (Martins Imhangbe) is a boxer, likely a reference to former slave turned bare-knuckle boxer Bill Richmond. Alongside the characters with plot lines viewers follow, there is a conscious effort to hire Black and POC extras to fill in crowd scenes at balls, park scenes, and other public events. The viewer sees people who look like themselves in every class level of society and can feel like they too can become part of their world.

Bridgerton: Cast Announced for Shonda Rhimes Netflix Series
By Alec Bojalad
Attire is a critical part of upholding the fantasy and cultural diversity Bridgerton and also in communicating to the audience the series isn’t your aunt’s neutral tone Austen adaptation. Marina and Lady Danbury would never be caught dead in a plain white muslin frock. All of the popular Regency hairstyles for women have been modified and reworked for natural textured hair, braids, and locs. Some of the Black male extras even have modern African hairstyles left in tact. The only Black characters who wear the traditional white wigs are older men or servants in full formal uniform. Queen Charlotte’s Black courtiers and servants wear a mixture of extravagant 1770s and 1780s attire and Regency court wear to create a physical separation between them and the rest of the ensemble cast. These style decisions are right out of the playbook of Still Star-Crossed, Shondaland’s first foray into period drama. Although that series took place in 1300’s Italy, the priority was on blending fantasy and Black fashion aesthetics over catering to white costume enthusiasts and reenactors.
In the world of Bridgerton, slavery and colonialism are directly or indirectly referenced exceedingly sparingly. One reference is to Lord Dunmore’s army of emancipated and runaway slaves during the Revolutionary War proclamation. (Hercules Mulligan’s Black troops referenced in “Stay Alive” is the Patriot equivalent of Dunmore’s forces). These sparing hints make it clear to the viewers that class, family, and personal family drama is the root cause of joy and pain in this series.
Since Bridgerton is completely ignoring the physical descriptions of the characters in many cases, the set design carries the bulk of the attention to historical detail. The series hired Dr. Hannah Greig as a historical advisor to ensure these details were as close to 1813 as possible. Greig has previously acted as a consultant to the Sanditon, Poldark, and The Duchess cast and crew is likely where the Easter Eggs in character references come from. Lavish mansions and castles and the more humble spaces ground the fantastical plot details in historical reality. Several previous period dramas have recreated the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, but these scenes in the miniseries are elevated to the next level thanks to Netflix’s budget.

World on Fire Returns People of Color to the Dunkirk Narrative
By Amanda-Rae Prescott
The success of Bridgerton applying color-conscious casting to a fantasy/romance series has implications far beyond potential future seasons. Studios especially those in the UK have been hesitant to utilize recent historical romance books for screen adaptations. Modern historical fiction by Black and POC authors (called Own Voices fiction)  which is crucial in the fight for increased representation. Novelists such as Beverly Jenkins, Courtney Milan, and Alyssa Cole have written romances set in the Regency and other eras of American and British History that can easily be transformed into movies and miniseries. Some of these novels recreate existing history while others lean into escapist fantasy. The ultimate goal in period drama representation is for Black and POC creatives to tell their own stories covering all the ranges of emotion, not just historical trauma.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Critics can keep attacking period dramas for being “too woke” (a term that was stolen from anti-racism activists) for remembering that white people aren’t the only inhabitants of the British Isles and America, but series like Bridgerton are here to stay. Black and POC viewers and readers of period drama and romance fiction always existed, and viewership will only grow if more inclusive period romance projects are greenlit in the future.

Do you take fic requests? I’ve requested this from a few different accounts and never saw it done: Killian runs out of the eyeliner he brought with him from the EF and he has to ask Emma where to get more
Nonnie, I’m gonna pretend I’m not offended that you didn’t come to me first :P (also I did way too much research into what eyeliner was like in the past for this)
. .
He tips the little golden box to the side and frowns. He can swear he is running out of kohl faster than when he was at sea. Which is nonsensical because now he does his eyes mostly out of habit and perhaps a touch of vanity - Killian is intimately acquainted with his flaws but he is equally skilled at accenuating his assets - not because he is actually exposed to the sun’s glare and staring at the horizon for hours on end.
And yet, as he dips the carved stylus inside, he has to reach much deeper than expected. True, his kohl box is not enchanted the way his flask is but he knows it was completely full upon their return from Neverland, when he took stock of all his provisions.
It is a mystery he puts out of his mind when he sees how high in the sky the sun is already and hurries to apply the powder without further distractions.
It is not that he has a set arangement to get to. Not precisely. It’s just that somehow - by stroke of habit or luck or design he dare not guess - for the last month, Emma has been taking her lunch on a bench by the marina every Wednesday and Friday.
The weekend is mostly reserved for her parents and Henry, he knows. Mondays she is much too busy and averse to company to eat anywhere but at her desk. Tuesdays and Thursdays are given to Granny’s. He tries not to think about the Tuesdays. She has a standing lunch date with her lad which Baelfire has taken to “crashing”, to borrow Emma’s own phrase, ever since he learnt about it.
But it’s no matter. It’s Friday and he sees the flash of red and gold long before he has reached her spot. He slows down and inserts a heavy dose of aimlessness into his step. If the way her mouth and cheek twitch restlessly is any indication, he is not doing a terribly good job of selling his nonchalance.
“Swan,” he nods to her and purposefully turns to face the water. “Fancy seeing you here.”
“Must be quite the shock.”
He purses his lips and circles around the bait. After all, she sounds more amused than exasperated. Surely, if she didn’t want to be found, she would have at least changed her choice of seat by now.
“You are ruining my view.”
This time he bites.
“Come now, love. We both know I could never do anything but vastly enchance the view.”
She hums around another bite of her sandwich and it’s provoking but it is also distinctively not disagreement. He takes a seat beside her.
They sit in silence for a few minutes. They usually do. Unless she has something to “vent about” - really, Emma grumbles about the way he speaks but, in truth, she is enriching his vocabulary in fascinating ways - she and the prince having a busy week of petty crimes and dwarf-sized disputes, Bae-- Neal trying to rope her into another “family bonding activity”, Regina complaying about Neal’s bonding activities and monopolization of Henry’s time or her mother trying for some bonding of her own and ending up with her foot in her mouth again.
When he actually thinks about it, they are rarely silent for longer than the first few minutes. But today Emma seems relaxed, almost content. He tries not to associate it with the way she had stretched and groaned and smiled and rolled out of his bed mere hours ago. He just takes in the curve of her lips and her cheek and--
“Bloody hell!”
She turns to him, eyes wide at his sudden exclamation.
“What?”
He swipes his thumb over her cheek - less tenderly than he normaly would have, not even giving her time to lean into the caress - though he doesn’t fail to note that she seemed ready to do just that. His finger comes away with some of the miniscule black specks on her cheek.
“You’re the one who has been robbing me blind.”
She frowns, looks down and rolls her eyes.
“You’re so overdramatic. And it’s that ridiculous stick you use that will blind you one day.”
“I do have some hundreds years of practice, I wouldn’t worry too much.”
“Whatever.”
She rolls her eyes again but it doesn’t do anything to hide the slight blush that has risen in her cheeks.
“And why, pray tell, have you taken to using it, if it’s so inconvenient?”
She takes an overlarge bite of her sandwich and glares at him as she chews. Killian can’t remember the last time he was this amused by another person’s antics. He waits patiently and when she finally swallows her food, Emma’s eyes drops to the small bit of bench left between them, her nail digging into the soft wood.
“It’s better, alright? It’s inconvenient but it’s better and lasts longer and... well, I was gonna say I’ll get you some more but I have no clue where to find that shit.”
He laughs, his eyes alight and on her and he wants to kiss her so badly but this has only been happening for a few weeks so he restrains himself to brushing her hair over her shoulder and rubbing away the rest of the powder that has fallen on her cheek. This time he lingers and she definitely leans into it.
“I’d be willing to barter with you, Swan.”
“What like - I owe you a kiss for every time I use your guyliner?”
The easy way she says it makes him think she might not have minded that much if he’d kissed her. It also gives him the confidence to casually refuse her.
“No, that won’t do. You have to give me something that’s only for my benefit, love.”
Her eyes flash - some indignation and a lot of fire and definitely a touch of interest.
“I have seen the ones you have in your world, you know?”
“What?”
“Your sticks of kohl that you just upcap and use. The way you don’t ink your pens either.”
“Oh. Yeah, eyeliner pencils.”
“Ingenius name.”
She gives him an unimpressed look but her lips are curled up and there is no space between then on the bench anymore and then--
“I could take you shopping tomorrow.”
“I thought you have an engagement with your mother.”
“Yeah, well. She is one of those psychos who prefers shopping in the mornings,” she shrugs as if it’s not a big deal and it doesn’t fool him in the least. “So I’m sure I can convince her to pawn me off after lunch and go spend the afternoon with my dad doing things I’m not going to think about.”
“You can have an afternoon like that yourself, love.”
He waggles his eyebrows aand leans closer, his nose almost brushing hers.
“Hook?”
“Aye?”
Her lips are too close and he is much too distracted.
“It’s really not in your best interest to associate that with my parents, if you want it to keep happening.”
Before he can formulate a reply, her lips press against his - firm and warm and much too quick - and in the next second she jumps to her feet and starts walking backwards, her face alight with mischief.
“2 pm. Don’t put anything on before that.”
“Nothing at all?” he calls after her and watches her roll her black-rimmed eyes.

ES Act 3, Scene 2 - Stranger and Stranger
Title: Endless Summer: The (un)Official Screenplay
Main Pairings: Estela x Ian (M!MC), Jake x Alyssa (F!MC)
Other Pairings: Craig x Zahra, Grace x Aleister, Michelle x Sean, Diego x Varyyn
Genre: Full Rewrite
Rating: PG-13 for swearing, violence, alcohol, and sexuality
Summary: As the group returns to the Celestial, they discuss the implications of everything they’ve seen.
Previous Scene: “We’re Not Alone”
Masterlist: Link
EXT. LA HUERTA JUNGLE - DAY
Now reunited, the group walk briskly north, toward the Celestial. Everyone is more frightened and jumpy than ever; they all look around at the jungle apprehensively, expecting a Vaanti to be hiding in every shadow. They speak in low, hushed tones; even the usually stoic Estela looks nervous, gripping I.R.I.S.’s now-inactive drone tightly in one fist. Furball shivers in Ian’s arms, just as nervous as the humans.
CRAIG: Okay, who the hell were those green dudes?!
JAKE: Ask Diego! He’s the one who mind-melded with Legolas back there!
RAJ: He what with the who now?
ESTELA: They’re the enemy. That’s all that matters right now.
DIEGO: If you hadn’t attacked them out of nowhere like that, they might not have been enemies! But now I think we pissed them off!
ESTELA: Well, excuse me for trying to save your lives, twice-
IAN: Look, whatever happened, happened. What do we do about it?
SEAN: We go back to the resort. Stay inside the fence ‘til we know what’s up. We gotta regroup.
ALYSSA: Amen to that. I’ve had way too much weird bullshit for one day.
MICHELLE: Let’s just be glad we’re all alive, okay?
IAN: Yeah, I admit we might’ve screwed up with attacking those green Avatars or whatever they were, but if it weren’t for Estela we’d all have drowned in the ocean.
ALEISTER: I, for one, am quite pleased to have avoided such an outcome. (nodding to Estela) You have my gratitude.
ALYSSA: Wait... what happened? Feeling lost right now.
ESTELA: There’s someone else on the island. An astronaut.
There is an awkward silence.
JAKE: ...And that’s it. I’m officially done with this place.
ESTELA: I know it sounds strange. But after your ship crossed the horizon, I headed back into the jungle, where found a person in a red astronaut suit. They told me... well, several things, but they told me Ian was in danger.
While Estela talks, a flashback to the events she describes is seen.
ALYSSA: Wait, Ian specifically? Because we were kinda all in danger-
ESTELA (blushing): Ian and everyone else, of course! I mean- it was- never mind!
IAN: The point is, Estela came after us in one of the speedboats.
ESTELA: I got there just in time to see the yacht get hurled through the air. I barely managed to get all of you almost to the shore before the creature caught up with me, too.
Estela’s flashback ends.
ALYSSA: Wow. Holy shit. Thanks, Estela.
SEAN: Does it bother anyone else how aggressive this island has gotten lately?
ZAHRA: Yeah, I got that impression when the freakin’ sea monster came out of nowhere.
QUINN: It’s almost like there’s some primeval force that doesn’t want us to leave. Like fate, or the universe, or... time itself.
GRACE: That would explain a lot. We’ve been noticing a pattern. Whenever we’re staying inside the resort with no intentions to leave, everything remains fairly normal.
ALEISTER: Yet, every time that we have attempted a course of action that would lead to escaping the island, something increasingly more unusual occurs to keep us here. An absurd concept, but one that cannot be disputed at this point.
IAN: Now that you mention it... I saw the sabertooth that first night, but it didn’t attack me or do anything. It was only when you guys went to the shelter that it attacked you.
ESTELA: And when I wandered further into the jungle earlier.
JAKE: Then again when we tried to fly home. My plane got destroyed and then two sabertooths attacked.
SEAN: Nothing bad happened for two days after that, until we headed out to the marina!
ALYSSA: The crab attacked us on the way, and then-
JAKE: Loch Nessie comes out of nowhere to stop us just when we’d almost gotten away. Like the island’s trump card.
DIEGO: ...And now the green elves show up.
QUINN: So, what, we’re trapped in the hotel now?
CRAIG: If we only get attacked when we try to leave, I vote we stay! The resort ain’t half bad!
GRACE: Our food stores won’t last forever, though.
RAJ: Not to mention the booze!
Craig’s face falls.
CRAIG: Aw, man... you’re right.
IAN: First things first. We’ve gotta-
LILA: There you are! I’ve been so worried!
As the group approaches the gates to the Celestial, Lila sprints out from the entrance, waving excitedly.
ALYSSA (suspiciously): Where have you been all this time?
LILA: Never mind that! I’m just glad you’re all safe!
JAKE: Well, we might not be for long! Estela, help me with this!
The others sprint past a bewildered Lila and through the gates. Lila follows them a moment later as Jake and Estela each grip one of the heavy steel gates, yanking them shut and barring the door. They turn away from the gate... but Diego is staring past it, into the trees, where a pair of glowing yellow eyes is watching him.
VARYYN: Makla est razzon. Metlakon. Makla tarr, Orabata... saneha Finis.
Diego’s eyes go wide with fear as Varyyn vanishes back into the jungle. The rest of the group looks at him expectantly.
DIEGO (shakily): They’re... they’re coming for us.

‘Color Pulse’
"Hold onto your tentacles..." Callie began as she and her cousin appeared on every screen in all of Inkopolis.
"... It's INKOPOLIS NEWS TIME!!!" Her cousin Marie finished. The Squid Sisters still ran the usual news broadcasts in the city, bringing the hottest scoops to the freshest squids and kids around... and today's news was EXTRA FRESH! The annual Splatfest was hosting its final battle today!
"We interrupt your regularly squid-duled programming to bring you this urgent news bulletin: SPLATFEST FINALS TODAY!!!" Callie yelled at the top of her voice! The small pink Inkling was especially excited. Splatfest was her favorite time of year!
"The epic battle between FRUIT and VEGGIE has culminated in this monolithic battle! Eight of the freshest squids in town will duke it out for domination! Well, make that seven Squids and an OCTOGIRL!!!" Marie cheered. The lime green Inkling could hardly contain herself. "We take you now to our awesome squidster station for a spot on the scene!"
The screen flashed, and a dark Octoling girl with long black tentacles traced with teal appeared. Behind her was a sold-out crowd awaiting the final match of the Splatfest!
"Thanks, Callie and Marie! It's your most favorite Octogirl here! And hopefully, I'm not only your favorite because of my shapes. I mean I know that's why Pearl loves me, but that's beside the point!" Marina joked. She was never one to miss an opportunity to knock fanboys off their game. "Marina here with the four finalists of Team FRUIT! I believe they started in the Cantaloupe Division, correct?"
"We certainly did, Marina!" Ruby Rose, the crimson Inkling with the compound weapon told her.
"So I've been hearing you girls will be using custom Ink colors as well as custom weapons in this last bout. Give us any details you're willing to divulge, please." Marina asked politely, twirling one of her tentacles in one hand.
"Ruby Rose, the team leader! I will be using my hybrid Carbon Roller SplatSniper! I like to call him the KRIMSON KRILLAH!" She bragged, holding up her compound weapon that was the horrific fusion of a Roller and a Charger. "I'll be using Red ink, my usual go-to!"
"I'm Weiss! I've acquired an exquisite Inkbrush for today's bout! I call it the White Knight!" Weiss Schnee, the short Inkling with the long white tentacles tied into an off-center ponytail, mentioned next. "I'll be using my signature white ink today!"
"The name's Blake! I'll be using my way fresh Tenta Brella! Complete with black ink and Suction Bombs!" Blake Belladonna, an Octoling with night black tentacles, told her. Weiss and Ruby had felt it best not to mention their bombs, but Blake kept no secrets when it was Ink Battle time.
"You can call me Yang! I'll be wielding Dualie Squelchers today and firing yellow ink!" Yang Xiao Long, the final team member, told Marina. Yang had bright yellow tentacles that flowed down her body.
"Red, white, black and yellow! It's gonna be a regular rainbow of ink at the Piranha Pit! Of course, the map will show your team color, which will be orange. Team VEGGIE will be blue. Speaking of who, here's Pearl with an interview with the losing-- ER-HEM I MEAN OPPOSING team!" Marina scoffed and grinned. She and Callie were confident in the talents of Team FRUIT.
Marie and Pearl were sponsoring Team VEGGIE. The screens flashed again, cutting to an interview with Pearl's team.
Finally cutting back to the Squid Sisters, they left their viewers with their usual tagline. "Staaaay FRESH!!!"
\/\/\/\/\/
"Alright, team FRUIT! I know we've got the Popularity score in the bag, and we've smashed everyone that's come against us! Let's get out there and smash this thing to bits!" Ruby cheered, her teammates joining her in a team chant.
"We're gonna be so awesome, you guys!" Yang cheered. This Splatfest had been loads of fun. They would be sad when it was finally over, but there would always be next Splatfest. Plus, it looked like they were favorites to win it all, and a nice payday would be lovely.
The call came for them to make for the platform and wait to be warped into the Piranha Pit. The four of them stepped onto the glowing circle and awaited the signal. When it came they morphed into their squid (Octopus in Blake's case) forms and were instantly warped onto the battlefield.
The three Inklings and the Octoling appeared at a launch point at one side of the Piranha Pit, an enormous quarry next to the sea. There were conveyor belts sprawled around the pit. They were easy to ink and counted at Turf, though they were usually vulnerable at all times to opposing ink.
The opposition appeared at the other launch point, and the countdown began. Once the cry of 'GO!!' hit their ears, Team FRUIT was off! Ruby and Weiss swiftly covered the Turf with their ink, rolling and painting with ease.
Blake and Yang inked in the gaps their teammates had left. These two were more thorough despite Ruby and Weiss having more inky weapons. Yang periodically laid Ink Mines for opposing players to surprise. If they were stepped on or swam over they would explode and SPLAT the one that disturbed them.
And suddenly, there was a blue Inkling in Blake's sights. She armed her Tenta Brella and fired at the enemy Inkling girl, dousing her in black ink that slowed her down and injured her. Yang fired her Squelchers at the blue girl to get the job done, the squid becoming a 'ghost' briefly before she respawned. Her Slosher never stood a chance anyway.
Some boy with a Roller exploded in a blast of yellow ink. Poor unsuspecting Squid!
Meanwhile, all the opposing team members became visible to Blake and Yang. Ruby must have used her Special, the Echolocator!
Weiss was in a scrap against some girl with Sprinkler Bombs and a Splatling gun. Weiss fired precise and artful strokes, slowly turning the girl white. She pulled out a megaphone suddenly. Her Special was the Killer Wail! Weiss dipped into her ink in Squid form to escape the huge shockwave of sound and ink, emerging to SPLAT the opposition from behind!
Weiss smirked at the 'ghost' squid that floated away! "You call that a Killer Wail? More like a KILLER FAIL!!"
"Wow..." Weiss heard in her earpiece.
"WHAT, Octopus?!" She complained.
"That was actually a pretty solid burn, Weiss!" Blake replied. Weiss blushed. "Don't be cute about it! That girl is pissed off and swimming your way!" Blake warned. The blue Inkling in question hopped out of the ink and tried to fire at Weiss from her Splatling, but before Weiss realized it the foe was covered in red ink.
"STAY OFF MY SQUEEZE, YOU SLIMY LITTLE HIPSTER!!!" Ruby commanded, retracting the sniping implement from her hybrid weapon and slashing down with the enormous paint roller. Weiss stuck the blue Inkling with her 'White Knight' to finish the job, though Ruby had already gotten the SPLAT.
The game clock read '1:20' and the map up on the huge screen showed a generous covering of orange ink. The four of them swam forward and found more Turf to ink.
Blake ran into the girl with the Sloshing Machine and took her out with ease. "This octopus OCTO-ROCKS!!!" She heard Yang say in her earpiece.
"Thanks, Babes! ON YOUR LEFT!" She threw a bomb at Yang that stuck on her, and the foe's blast caused it to ignite and cover both Yang and himself in black ink.
"Splatted by my own team! How will I ever go on?" Yang cried, her overly dramatic fake swoon causing her to fall into the water. Her squid body dissolved as she touched the surface. These sea creatures can't swim!!!
TEE HEE
Some of the Turf around their launchpad had been inked over, so Yang inked it yellow again, her Special meter glimmering as she did. She fired her Inkstrike into a noticeable deposit of blue ink. This apparently SPLATTED the entire opposing team.
"Yang fires the inks that makes the squids fall down!!" Blake rambled in a goofy voice as she saw the quadruple SPLAT come across the screen.
"We're crushing it, you guys! We've got to be the freshest Squids in the city!" Yang cheered.
"I'm an Octoling, so I'm fresher than you all by default!" Blake injected.
"I'd dispute that, but Yang would probably SPLAT me..." Weiss mentioned. With twenty seconds left, three of the opposing team members rushed their Team, all getting themselves SPLATTED instantly. Team FRUIT was not playing around...
"Their fourth squid has a Charger! Watch your backs!" Blake mentioned as her Special became ready. She found the sniper on the map and locked onto him. Her Tenta Missiles flew at him, causing heavy damage but not SPLATTING him. Weiss and Ruby took a high point and covered one another as the sniper boy swam up and rushed Blake.
His team all Super Jumped to his side, and the four of them came at Blake.
Weiss's Bomb Rush took them all down before they could get a drip of ink on Blake! The last countdown came just as Team VEGGIE spawned at their checkpoint!
The map on the screen was all but covered in orange ink, although their multicolored ink looked much fresher.
"The winner of this year's Splatfest is most obviously TEAM FRUIT!!!!" Marina cheered. "Pay up, Pearl!"
"I'm all outta coin, Marina!" Pearl complained, turning out the empty pockets on her dress. "I guess I'll just do that thing you love so much when we get home..."
Marina rolled her eyes but begrudgingly accepted Pearl's offer. "All right... But you'd better do it real FRESH for me!" She winked at her bandmate and squeeze.
"You two are disgusting! No wonder they hardly let you on the screen at the same time!" Callie nicked on the other screen. "Well, there you have it, little Squids! Team FRUIT has won the big Splatfest, and Marie owes me a ton of Coins!" She bragged to their audience, Marie rolling her big green eyes.
Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang took in the spotlight for as much as they could stand it. They made off to find some local eats after the whole thing was over, settling for a nice variety spot near the Booyah Base. Here they could get just about any filthy fast food they could ask for, and they filled up on the gross goodness that the wait staff offered them.
They left a ton of Coins for the crew when they finished their meal. Ruby and Weiss decided to crash at Yang and Blake's pad instead of making the long walk to their own place. They could still hardly believe they won the whole Splatfest!
And that's the end of my crazy crossover fanfiction, little squids! Until next time...
Don't get cooked! STAY OFF THE HOOK!
And, as always, STAY FRESH!!
\/\/\/\/\/ \/\/\/\/\/ \/\/\/\/\/

The maximum prize awarded on these machines is $800, with a maximum bet of $2 per hand. The chips remain on the table, but the player cannot win from or lose chips which are not working. A sheet  of court cards could consist of24 cards,  i.e.  two  complete  series  of  12courts.  Another  common  arrangementwas to have  20 cards on a sheet  leavingout  the  jacks  of  diamonds  and  heartsand having 2 sets  of the other  10 courts. The  red  jacks would  occupy  a  separatesheet  (and  require  only  4  stencils  sincethere  would  be  no need  for  black  to bestencilled  on)  and  be printed  as  10 x 2.This  may  help  to  explain  why   quiteoften  the red jacks appear  not  to belongwith  the rest  of the pack—because  theydidn't!  The  20  cards  per  sheet  schemealso fitted  well with the idea  of having 2x  10 red  pips  (ace  to  ten)  on  one  sheetand  2 x  10 black pips on  another.  How-ever, French patrons  also exist  for  24 pipcards per  sheet with  12 x 7 of  diamonds(say) and  12 x 7 hearts, as well  as  for  12cards and  for  30 cards. Dealers themselves often make significant efforts to avoid calling out the number. When necessary, participants may refer to seven with a "nickname" such as "Big Red" (or just "Red"), "the S-word", etc.

Some provinces also have regulations that allow individual municipalities to hold referendums to opt out of VLT operation in their communities. In addition, the dealer uses a blank plastic card, which is never dealt, but is placed toward the bottom of the pack to indicate when it will be time for the cards to be reshuffled. Casino gambling is different from other forms of gambling, such as lotteries and Internet gambling, because of its social aspect. In the home game, all of the players have the opportunity to be the dealer (a "changing bank").
On the other 24 rolls that become a point, your don't pass bet is now to your advantage by 6:3 (4 and 10), 6:4 (5 and 9) and 6:5 (6 and 8). If a player chooses to remove the initial don't come and/or don't pass line bet, he or she can no longer lay odds behind the bet and cannot re-bet the same don't pass and/or don't come number (players must make a new don't pass or come bets if desired). https://www.washingtonpost.com/newssearch/?query=엠카지노 Players possessing sufficient skills to eliminate the inherent long-term disadvantage (the house edge or vigorish) in a casino game are referred to as advantage players. *If the player wins and the dealer does qualify the Ante bet is paid at 1 to 1 and the Call bets is paid according to the following paytable; Casinos running on the GameSys software platform offer an alternative version of Caribbean Stud Poker called ‘Caribbean Advanced Poker’. If the Dealer's hand contains at least an Ace and King, he must then play his hand against each Player based on traditional poker hand rankings. If your hand beats the Dealer's, you win even money on your Ante bet. For your secondary bet, the odds are as follows:
The cards shall be spread out according to suit and in sequence. After the first player is afforded an opportunity to visually inspect the cards, the cards shall be turned face down on the table, mixed thoroughly by a "washing" or "chemmy shuffle" of the cards and stacked. Example: First ball is 22. All numbers beginning or ending with a 2 is considered a called number. Most gambling games like crap and roulette are popular. 우리카지노 This is one move which led him to bring back his company from bankruptcy.
In a large and popular category of trick-taking games, traditionally called whist-style games although the best-known example may now be bridge, one suit is designated in each hand of play to be trump and all cards of the trump suit rank above all non-trump cards, and automatically prevail over them, losing only to a higher trump if one is played to the same trick. Blackjack is a fascinating and fun table game that you can play in casinos, and there are many interesting facts about the blackjack game. In some games an advantage may go to the dealer, the banker (the individual who collects and redistributes the stakes), or some other participant. The Casino Estoril, located in the municipality of Cascais, on the Portuguese Riviera, near Lisbon, is the largest casino in Europe by capacity.
Singapore is an up-and-coming destination for visitors wanting to gamble, although there are currently only two casinos (both foreign owned), in Singapore. The Marina Bay Sands is the most expensive standalone casino in the world, at a price of US$8 billion, and is among the world's ten most expensive buildings. The Resorts World Sentosa has the world's largest oceanarium. There are two exceptions to the method described above. Some pachinko parlors may even give out vouchers for groceries at a nearby supermarket. On the other side a gambler playing Blackjack has many more possibilities, giving him plenty of opportunity to do the wrong decisions.
One example of a dice wheel, manufactured by H. C. Evans & Co. of Chicago (or its successor), is divided into 54 segments. The individual payoffs are large for those bettors whose winning horses are backed by relatively few bettors and small if the winners are backed by a relatively large proportion of the bettors; the more popular the choice, the lower the individual payoff. The same holds true for betting with bookmakers on athletic contests (illegal in most of the United States but legal in England). Players often shout out encouragement. Alcoholic drinks are easily accessible and delivered directly to gamblers by waiters circulating throughout the casino. If a player's first two cards are of the same denomination, such as two jacks or two sixes, they may choose to treat them as two separate hands when their turn comes around.
When joining the game, one should place money on the table rather than passing it directly to a dealer. The dealer's exaggerated movements during the process of "making change" or "change only" (converting currency to an equivalent in casino cheques) are required so that any disputes can be later reviewed against security camera footage. For a century after its invention, craps was abused by casinos using unfair dice. In the twenty-first century, casinos are choosier.Part of the ground floor has now been converted into a museum of Baccarat crystal products. The park was bisected by an open street in the 1st half of the 19th century and a part (located to the west of the orangery) was subdivided in the last years of the 19th century for the construction of the Workers' City. There are also some private archives.

Noting Marzamemi
Easy and slow start in Syracuse. Georgio our cheerful and friendly host had said there was no rush for us to leave and we could have held on to the apartment for a bit longer into the day but time to move on.
We went virtually next door for breakfast and shared a couple of pastries ( there were only 4 on offer) in a tiny little cafe though there were seats outside but it had rained that morning so we just sat inside. Friendly lady running the joint.
We had arranged to meet Georgio at 11.30 and he duly rolled up we handed over the keys and were on our way. Apartment was a bit dark but a good size and we enjoyed it. Position excellent and free parking which saved 10 euros a night. Georgio a delight to meet too.
Our destination was Noto which we had not been able to get to 4 years before due to a shortage of time. It was really one of the must sees for this trip whereas Catania and Syracuse were slight afterthoughts at least for me though had proved to be very rewarding.
Only a 40 minute drive from Syracuse so we arrived about 1.00 found a park fairly easily in a side street at the top of town and went exploring. Noto is famed for having one of the most beautiful historic centres in Sicily particularly around the Walkway Vittorio Emmanuelle filled with baroque churches and palaces.
We quickly found it but were keen for lunch. A quick explore found that with a fair few tourists the decent lunch places were full so we settled on fresh takeaway rolls made before us in a little deli cafe. Liz’s favourite of tomato and mozzarella (tomatoes are the real McCoy here fresh as a daisy and red red not cool room orangey red). Salami, cheese and some spicy veggies in oil for me - excellent. We sat at a bench and downed them with a soft drink.
Now for town and the sights. Most of the sights seemed to be closed for visitors and we wondered if that was because it was Monday. Anyway we trooped along Corso Vittorio Emmanuelle and there were certainly some grand churches and buildings generally. However as we made our way along we both came to the same conclusion. We were whelmed by it but not overwhelmed. It felt almost a bit clinical, too clean. Lines of buildings a too symmetrical. It was “nice” but it wasn’t setting the pulse racing. We walked the length of the street and on through the gardens at the end which were nothing too special though the various little cafes and so on which might spark up at night were closed.
It wasn’t too hard to decide that we should keep going which was a shock to the system given this was our Number 1 destination for this trip. It may just have been a reelection of the resplendent architecture we had seen already particularly in Catania.
Anyway we pressed on and the next stop was within 30 mins - Marzamemi. This little fishing village had been recommended to us by Adelaide our B&B hostess in Catania. We immediately fell in love with it. Pretty small, fronting on to the sea. It seemed as if heavy rains had been through as one end of town which was where the port was had a street virtually submerged in water. We followed a couple of other cars through and not too deep. This turned out to be the quiet end of town at least from a tourist viewpoint.
We headed the other way to find a livelier (though on a small scale) centre. Quite a few restaurants and a small shopping area. We identified a little hotel on the main street parked up and they offered us a room for 50 euros. Great price and quite low for this time of year. However it was gone 4.00pm and perhaps they had a few vacancies.
Room was fine though was right on the front st so a bit noisy later we found. Still 50 euros a bargain. Having dumped the cases I set off to the nearby car park to park the car which was 10 euros overnight a bit of a shame but whatever. Street parking apparently not an option.
We set off to explore. First thing we noticed was the strong fishy smell. There used to be a tuna factory here which has now gone but they still process fish here in some way or other. We could see trays of what looked like salted fish. Next door to the processing centre was a sort of artisan food store. In a small warehouse set up with jars of everything from anchovies, jam to veggies in oil, cheese, biscuits, local wine and beers and much more. It was one of two outlets in town with the Italian tourists keen acquirers of these tasty tidbits it seemed.
We pressed on and a couple of very upmarket stores in town. One being O bags selling very stylish beach and fashion bags. We nearly bought a beach bag in Noto from the same store but a bit lumpy price wise and we are already running pretty close to our weight limits for next flight on Ryanair to London. I’ll pine for it though. The second shop (LAO) had very stylish jewellery, some dresses and watches as well as various house ornaments. Liz talked me into a watch which didn’t take much doing and shouldn’t trouble the weight constraints of Ryanair. Went back the following day and bought a second strap of different colour for it so two watches in one though inched marginally as a result towards the weight limits.
We continued on just looking at the various little shops and cafes. A lovely moment was on a small inland lake behind the main shopping area where there was a flock of flamingoes fossicking in the shallow water for whatever flamingoes eat. They were doing this by rapidly moving their legs back and fwd in the mud presumably to disturb bugs etc and then sticking their beaks in. In the late afternoon sun it really was a pretty sight.
After a quick change we headed for the lovely little city square. Old and quaint with sort of faded sandstone brick facades. One new building in one corner which had obviously slipped through the town planner’s net but it didn’t spoil the overall effect.
We found a bar/cafe in one corner and settled down for a beer and Aperol. Excellent local artisan beer for me. We people watched and chilled and pinched ourselves yet again. Thanks for the recommendation Adelaide most unlikely we would not have got here otherwise. We were so taken that I quickly nipped back and booked a second night at the hotel.
The restaurant next door looked good with tables and chairs outside so we booked for 8.00pm which was the earliest option. At 7.45 there was not a soul there (we have noticed the Italians like to eat quite late) though clearly they weren’t taking earlier bookings. One reason may have been that at 7.45 what looked like the effluent disposal truck rolled up, unleashed tubing which disappeared into the restaurant, cleared whatever it cleared and headed off by 7.55 ready for the first intake (or is that input) at 8.00. We had a birds eye view of all this form our seat next door.
We were a bit concerned that it might be a bit cool as a degree or two cooler than preferred but slipped a cardy on and Liz her leather jacket and all was good. By 8.30 the place was pretty full and buzzing with a few more tables being put out at the front for latecomers. Dinner was good I had some small red fish(name eludes) and Liz also can’t remember what she had a pasta from memory. The ambience obviously overcame us. A little walk around town at the end of the night and then we retired very happy with our choice.
Next day we breakfasted on some pastries at a little cafe next door. A croissant which was sort of permeated with jam and a pastry with fruit running through. Both yum. Liz was keen to get the beach so we headed for the car and drove out of town to a nearby beach. There was a little cafe bar and beach chairs for hire so Liz settled in. Sunny but a bit blowy. I fancied a drive so headed off along the beach road but not before setting up Narelle on maps fairly carefully. Without my trusty navigator I would have had to find my own way back.
The road runs virtually right beside the beach in the area so I headed west just taking in the scenery which in truth was nothing spectacular though a couple of lovely beach spots. I drove as far as Marina di Modica and on the way found where the car ferry goes to Malta. We could have come that way to Sicily possibly though they tend not to be any cheaper than flights and we didn’t want to take a car from Malta and leave it in Sicily with the added cost of that. I stopped at a pretty little place by the beach near MdM for an Arancini and soft drink and then headed back. All up probably had been a couple of hours with the stop. About 5/6 mins in received a call from Liz, the wind had become pretty strong and she was ready to head back. I put the foot down as I was still about 20 mins away, picked her up and we headed back to Marzamami.
A repeat of the previous day really. Went for a late afternoon stroll after showers. Bought my additional watch strap. Took photos. Soaked it all up. Forked out another 10 euros for the car park and then returned to the same little cafe bar for pre dinner drinks though this time we also had dinner there. This was followed by gelato from one of the little food stores/cafes.
Just a lovely little place Marzamemi. Off the beaten track. Quaint. Most enjoyable.
Next day proved a little trickier at settlement time. Liz headed downstairs to pay only to be confronted by a cost of 80 euros a night not the 50 we were advised. A protracted dispute ensued and clearly the young lady who had advised us either got it wrong, acted on a whim, exceeded her authority, was being mischievous or just decided to cut a deal on a slow day. We will never know. She was nowhere to be seen. It appeared that she was someone of authority as the receptionist at arrival time asked her what the price should be. Neither that receptionist nor the young lady were around.
They indicated that 50 euros was the price for a single and it clearly was as they showed Liz the books. However it was also clear at the time of booking that the two of us were going into the room as we were standing side by side. We also remembered the confirmation of price even the manner with which it was delivered - a slight twitch of the head. Liz was about to concede or suggest 50/50 when with a shrug of the shoulders the receptionist accepted the lower price and we headed off.
Left a bit of a nasty taste in the mouth not through our own doing and we wondered if the truth came out after we left or there were denials all round. Another little mental note get the confirmation in writing or reiterate the price clearly so there is no doubt. I kicked myself also for not reconfirming the price when I booked the second night rather than just assuming it would be the same. At least the issue might have come out earlier. Also, who knows, we might have checked other hotels for prices if the 80 was advised in the first place though probably unlikely. Anyway all part of the experience.
Still a great stop and thoroughly recommend Marzamemi. On to Modica.

Want to discover Martinique and the Grenadines? Here are two boat itineraries 7 and 14 days for your next Caribbean break!
Are you undecided on where to organize your next trip? Do you want to visit the Caribbean but are undecided on which is the best destination? Let yourself be inspired by this article in which we will list two itineraries, one shorter and one longer, to discover some of the islands that make up the Lesser Antilles archipelago.
CONTACT OUR CHARTER MANAGERS FOR PERSONALISED ASSISTANCE
The itineraries we have chosen allow you to discover a part of the Lesser Antilles, that is, a group of volcanic islands arranged in an arch and located south-east of the Greater Antilles that ideally separate the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. This series of small islands is famous for being one of the best places to cruise, offering calm waters sheltered from strong winds and a considerable number of moorings.

To view in detail all the stops and spots of the above boat itineraries, ready carefully our article.
For our itineraries, we will use the island of Martinique, one of the most famous islands of this Caribbean archipelago, as the starting point and base camp.
Related: Why choose Martinique for your next Caribbean cruise destination?
It is possible to arrive here by air with direct flights from Paris. The island has indeed an airport near the capital, Fort-de-France.
This volcanic island has always been a mixture of different peoples and cultures resulting from different occupations that have followed one another over the centuries.
Today Martinique is part of the overseas territories of France, the official language is French and the Euro is its valid currency.
7 days around the Grenadines from Martinique
As we said, our tour starts on the Martinique island and more precisely from the modern Le Marin marina. Here we have the opportunity to prepare our boat (yacht, catamaran, or sailboat) and to carry out the briefing with the crew before departure.
Le Marin marina also offers a wide range of services and amenities including a supermarket, a bakery, a launderette, a post office, a tobacconist’s, a money exchange office, and a medical center.
Day 1
Martinique, Fort de France
The largest city in the French Antilles and the capital of Martinique, Fort de France is centrally located and easily accessible. It is a city rich in 19th-century history and architecture as well as offering its visitors a full range of shops, dining experiences and places to explore. Examples of this are the fruit and vegetable market founded in 1901, the Saint-Louis Cathedral, and the fort Saint-Louis.
It is worth spending a day in the jovial atmosphere of this city.
Day 2
Martinique, Anse du Céron
One of the most famous beaches on the island where you can enjoy some peace and tranquility between swimming and snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of this bay. Anse du Ceron is located in the northernmost part of the Martinique west coast.
Day 3
Martinique, Grande Anse D’Arlet
One of the most popular seaside towns in Martinique, it offers a truly characteristic and colorful glimpse into the life of the island. Tourists can choose whether to enjoy the golden sandy beach more than half a mile long, swim in crystal clear waters protected from the winds by the bay, or get lost in the narrow streets of the town.
Day 4
Saint Lucia, Rodney Bay
From Martinique, we head south towards and precisely towards the island of Santa Lucia. Here we discover Rodney bay, a well-served marina surrounded by protected waters that offers visitors easy access to restaurants, shops, and attractions.
Near the bay, you can reach a scenic area, beaches such as Reduit Beach, or the picturesque Pigeon Island National Park surrounded by pristine waters.
Day 5 – Day 6
Saint Lucia
Dedicating just one day to Saint Lucia seems very little to us and it is for this reason that we decide to stop in its waters for a few days, discovering some of its wonders.
Santa Lucia is one of the eight independent islands of the Lesser Antilles and among its countless points of interest, we certainly find the Piton mountains. located southwest, these two mountains have become the symbol of the island. Although roughly only 800 meters high, their triangle shape has become iconic and panoramic. If you love trekking, you cannot miss a walk among the paths that wind through the jungle of these two peaks.
Another island pearl is the picturesque town of Soufriere, which takes its name from a nearby volcano that is now extinct. Creole culture buildings with gingerbread finishes and balconies overlooking the alleys and streets create an Old World atmosphere.
Day 7
The time has come to decide whether or not to continue our tour. In the first case, we will head to Martinique to relax for one last day before departure, in the second case, the tour continues!
Got more time? Let’s add some more destination:
14 days boat itinerary to the Grenadines departing from Martinique
Day 8 – Day 9
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Determined to continue our boat charter in the Caribbean, we always head south to the island of Saint Vincent, the largest island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines country.
These territories have long been disputed, France and Britain fought for the island in the 18th century until it was ceded to the British in 1783, which is why English is the official language even though many locals speak a Creole dialect.
The island is a paradise with beautiful beaches like Wallilabou where scenes from the famous Pirates of the Caribbean movie were filmed.
In the restaurants of the capital, Kingstown, you can enjoy delicious Creole cuisine based on seafood such as crabs and lobsters.
Day 10
Bequia
A short sailing will take you to anchor at Admiralty Bay, Bequia’s main port on the west side of this island.
Bequia is better known for its lively nightlife and entertainment spots. In its main center, Port Elizabeth, the craftsmen work with wood building various sizes of wooden boats. Here you can also find fairs and markets where you can stock up on souvenirs.
Day 11
Balinceaux
Not far from Bequia, sailing south-east we find Baliceaux. A little bigger than a rock, it is another small pearl of the Grenadines.
It is nicknamed “the Cinderella of the Grenadines” due to the fact that, unlike the other neighboring islands, it is practically ignored by tourist flows. This fact, however, makes it exotic and mysterious.
Day 12
Mustique
The most exclusive island of the Grenadines. In fact, sumptuous estates and resorts have been built along the green slopes that characterize it, overlooking the pristine white sand beaches and the turquoise sea full of coral reefs.
Celebrities, business magnates, and royalty have made the island a haven for a select few but still rich in nature and unspoiled beauty.
Day 13 – Day 14
Tobago Cays
The Tobago Cays are a group of five uninhabited islets in the Antilles (Petit Rameau, Petit Bateau, Jamesby, Baradal, Petit Tabac).
They are part of the Grenadines archipelago and are protected by a large coral reef called Horseshoe reef and a second smaller reef called World’s End Reef. The pristine waters, abundant varieties of fish, and lovely beaches make the Tobago Cays home to the wonderful Tobago Cays Marine Park.

Relief in Gibraltar as ‘hard border‘ avoided
Gibraltarians reacted with relief and caution Friday after Madrid and London reached a deal allowing the territory to become part of Europe's passport-free zone to keep movement fluid on its border with Spain. Some 15,000 people, mainly Spanish, pour into Gibraltar, a tiny British territory on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula, from Spain every day to work, accounting for half of its workforce.Thousands more tourists go through the single checkpoint on the frontier every day, mostly day-trippers from Spain drawn in part by Gibraltar's duty-free shopping. With a land area of just 6.8 square kilometres (2.6 square miles), Gibraltar must import all of its food. Some 50,000 trucks cross the border every year on the only road linking the territory to Spain.Without a deal, this flow would have been slowed by tighter checks and more passport stamping once Britain's Brexit transition period ended on December 31, creating a new "hard border" between Gibraltar and the European Union. The frontier was virtually deserted Friday due to the New Year's Day holiday and pandemic restrictions on the entry of tourists."It's good news, it seems like the best way to keep everything moving," said Oliver Gomez, a 34-year-old actuary, as he walked his dog in Gibraltar's mostly empty marina when asked about the deal.Under terms of the last-minute accord announced Thursday by Gibraltar and Spain, the tiny territory would become part of the Schengen passport-free zone, which covers 26 European countries (most of the 27 EU members, along with Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Lichtenstein).Spain would be responsible for managing the Schengen arrangement which would be implemented by Frontex, the agency charged with protecting the EU's external borders. All the details of the agreement will be settled between Spain and Britain during a six-month transition period.- Border frictions -Some Gibraltarians, however, expressed concern over Spain being given a role in managing the deal."We haven't always had the best track record with the Spanish. Let's see how it goes," said Jeff Saez, a 43-year-old hotel employee while out on a morning bike ride along the marina. While Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain in perpetuity in 1713 following a military struggle, Madrid has long wanted it back in a thorny dispute that has for decades caused friction on the frontier.Tensions peaked in 1969 when the regime of dictator Francisco Franco closed the border, which did not fully reopen until 1985.In 2013, Spain stepped up its vehicle checks at the border and mulled imposing a crossing fee, triggering months of gridlock amid a dispute over an artificial reef.Mark Leavesley, a 34-year-old Gibraltar real estate agent, said he believed the territory would adapt well whether there was a border deal or not."Gibraltar has proven to be resilient," he said.- 'Nimble economy' -Gibraltar was forced to reinvent its economy after Britain sharply reduced its military presence in the territory in the 1980s, including closing its naval dockyards, a major employer.Britain's military now accounts for less than ten percent of Gibraltar's GDP, compared to 60 percent in the late 1970s, according to John Fletcher, an economist at Britain's Bournemouth University. The territory used favourable tax policies to help build up its banking and financial services sectors, which have transformed it into one of the most prosperous regions in Europe."It is a really nimble and inventive economy and it can be that way because it is so small it can change quickly," Fletcher told AFP, describing Gibraltar's economic transformation as "amazing".There was relief as well in La Linea, the impoverished Spanish city just across the border from Gibraltar which has long relied on the territory for jobs and business.Nuria Hernanez, who owns a hardware store in La Linea, estimates that 40 percent of the customers come from Gibraltar."Without them there would be nothing here," she said.ds/chz/wdb
