Eurovision Fact #503:
Tumblr media
After winning Melodifestivalen, Tusse (Sweden 2021) was asked if he was excited for Eurovision. He replied, ‘No, on Monday I have to hand in an essay in Nature science. Which I’m very excited for.’

In a statement published the same week as the first Melodifestivalen semi-final, more than 1000 Swedish artists ask the EBU to exclude Israel from this year's Eurovision Song Contest, including 2 acts participating in this year's edition of melfest: Jacqline, and both members of Medina. Also among the signatures are former melfest participants Johan Hirvi (Panetoz) and Alvaro Estrella, as well as former winners Eric Saade and Malena Ernman.
Some other notable signatures belong to Robyn, First Aid Kit, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Petra Marklund (also known as September), The Wannadies, Thomas Stenström, Miriam Bryant, Sabina Ddumba, Daniel Adams-Ray, Timbuktu, Kaliffa and many others whose names I recognise but I'm too unfamiliar with the contemporary music scene to know their work.
Below is my translation of some parts of their statement, as well as sources:
Note: The bold parts are also bold in the original statement. I have tried to use the same terminology as the statement, but I'm no expert, so be aware that there can be some mistakes.
The first link includes the full statement in Swedish as well as a list of all the signatures:
[...] What is happening in Gaza is a humanitarian disaster and the International Court of Justice in The Hague has recently decided to continue the case where Israel is accused of crimes against the Genocide Convention. Despite this the European radio- and TV-union the EBU intends to allow Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The EBU grounds its position on Eurovision being a competition between public service companies rather than states. But in 2022 the EBU chose to exclude Russia by reason of the invasion of Ukraine, and in 2021 the participating broadcaster from Belarus was denied participation because the country broke the EBU's rules for the freedom of the press. In barely four months about 100 Palestinian journalists have been killed, and foreign press has been denied access to Gaza. It is one of the greatest attacks on journalistic freedom in modern times. We are of the opinion that the EBU by allowing Israel's participation displays a remarkable double-standard that undermines the credibility of the organisation. [...] We expect both the EBU and this year's host broadcaster SVT to be consistent in their approach towards participating countries that infringe on democratic values and human rights.
[...] We who sign this are 1000 artists who believe in music as a unifying force. The Eurovision Song Contest began as a peace project to unite countries and citizens through music. To allow Israel's participation undermines not just the competition's spiritual intent but the entire public service mission. It also sends the signal that governments can commit war crimes without facing consequences. That is why we ask the EBU: Exclude Israel from the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

A post about the Loreen thing,
which I'm making separately so that it isn't hidden under the cut when I do my yearly review.
First of all it is necessary to state that I don't hate Tattoo. I have it fifteenth for the year. I liked Euphoria and I like some of Loreen's other music. I am not jumping on the hater train because I hate Loreen or hate the song. She sounded good on the night and the staging was, as we expect of Sweden, showy and mostly visually interesting.
HOWEVER. I think that there are two reasons that people are angry right now and both of them are justified. Firstly, it's because of the way the voting system works currently and what narratives work well on a television show (which Eurovision, ultimately, is). Secondly, it's because some more discerning fans are picking up on some of the circumstances surrounding Loreen's participation and win and have gotten out their red string.
To point one: This is the first time since the split voting system was implemented in 2016 that the winner of the jury vote won the contest. We've previously had entries who won neither, but there was too big of a split between the jury and televote winner (2016, 2019), an entry who won both votes (2017), and entries who won the televote (2018, 2021, 2022). Eurovision has changed a lot since its inception and in some ways the juries are a holdover from when it was a song contest rather than a performance contest (they were also reintroduced to combat bloc voting and then just made the bloc voting worse so do with that what you will). These days, the people like to vote!!! The people also like an underdog, which we went into the contest knowing that Finland was--or at least, the only other contender with a fighting chance of beating Queen Loreen. So seeing Loreen absolutely sweep the jury vote, country by country, with a margin of over 100 points, got boring and frustrating real fast.
I'm not saying down with the juries necessarily. I'm a somewhat serious musician who often loves jury bait songs and the juries have played an important role in supporting the songs I really like. And sometimes, the tension between the jury vote and public vote is okay! Sometimes it's interesting and makes for good television! But last night was not, narratively, good television.
I mean, maybe it was for some people.
Which leads me to point two: the red string. Now, I am not usually a conspiracy theory person at Eurovision. I mean, my first Eurovision was 2016 and I remember how the Russia fans got about that. My second Eurovision was 2017 and I hated APD with a burning passion at the time and I didn't get out the red string then.
But this... I think a lot of more serious fans are looking at the big picture. So, when a country wins, they get to be on the reference group and participate in decision-making about contest rules and such. The last time Sweden won was 2015. This win put them at 6 total, one behind Ireland. Sweden has made being good at Eurovision part of their national identity. The split voting system was introduced the following year, at the 2016 contest, hosted by Sweden.
Fast forward to this year. Sweden have placed 5th three times, 4th once, and then 7th and 14th which are less interesting, in the years since. Objectively very good results. But this year, the contest final was due to take place on Johnny Logan's birthday (Johnny Logan being the first, at that time only, competitor in history to win twice). The fiftieth anniversary of Abba's win is next year. And Loreen decided to come back to Melodifestivalen.
Loreen had previously tried to return in 2017 with the song "Statements" but wiped out in Melfest's second chance round. So it wasn't necessarily guaranteed that she would sweep. However, many fans felt that this year's Melfest entries were really weak songs, which made it easier for "Tattoo", with its flashy staging and name recognition, to soar to a win. In a real monkey's paw moment, I said after watching Melfest that the only way I could accept Loreen winning Melfest was if she Johnny Logan'd. Lol.
Even before Melfest, though, there were also the new voting rules. For the first time this year, semifinal qualifiers would be decided only through televote, not based on the juries. As I noted last night, this meant that the televote would likely be split among many songs--we'd still have a televote winner, but if the jury coalesced behind one song, the jury winner would win the contest. This... happened.
It's also worth noting that the current executive supervisor of the contest is Swedish, and that even before the voting sequence there were references to Abba and Johnny Logan throughout the night. That, in addition to the weak Melfest, timing of both voting changes, and the timing of the contest, adds up to a conspiratorial picture, for those who are so inclined.
And, lastly, I also think some of us are having fun arguing with Loreen fans, especially those who are like "well, YOU voted for her, so you don't get to complain!" Reader, I did not vote for Loreen. I in fact voted for Finland, among others. Most of us who are complaining did not, in fact, vote for Loreen. And look I don't wanna be like last year's Spain fans who to this day say that Chanel was the true winner of the 2022 contest but it is pretty fun to be a hater.
At the end of the day, it is what it is and there isn't anything we can do to change it, but it's fun to be angry in the meantime, and I personally had fun assembling all the reasons why people are angry into a nice little tumblr post for you all. Thank you and goodnight <3

I got in the mood to check through my tags and discovered that what I have tagged as "my beloved" varies a lot. I thought I should make a poll so that you could vote for what's most beloved to you

I'm working on a small ESC project atm for which I'm looking at some national finals from this season and the 2021 season. And I noticed that there used to be a lot more internal selections two years ago compared to nowadays. Do you have any idea why that was the case/ why it changed? (I know it's a really random question but I thought you'd be the best person to ask :))
There are many countries that have their established national selections that are organised every year. UMK, Melodifestivalen, MGP, DMGP, Söngvakeppnin, Eesti Laul, Supernova, Festivali i Këngës, Festival da Canção just to name a few.
Then there are those countries that try different selection methods every few years, depending on the participating broadcaster, their financial situation and if there are any established artists showing interest to be selected internally. Some examples of those are Netherlands, Belgium (with two broadcasters), Moldova, Spain, San Marino, France, Malta, Georgia, Australia and Israel. Sometimes they organise a full national final, sometimes they choose just the artist via a talent show (Malta's X Factor 2019 & 2022, Georgian Idol 2019 & 2020), and sometimes they make an internal selection.
In 2022 TRM was planning to hold a full national selection but cancelled it after the preliminary round when it became clear there was no competition for Trenulețul. San Marino's 1in360 was scrapped after only one year letting Senhit & Flo Rida to represent the country and then Una voce per San Marino was founded in 2022. Israel, Slovenia and France also got big names with Noa, Joker Out and La Zarra so organising a NF would have been a waste of everyone's time and money, and so forth. This leads to the number of national selections changing from year to year, and I must admit that I haven't been invested in the subject enough to notice any strong trends.
2021 national final season is very exceptional since it was strongly effected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the 2020 contest got cancelled, a total of 24 countries decided to send their representative again the next year, and that lead to one-year hiatus for many established national selections. Most of those then returned again in 2022 👇
Czechia: Benny Cristo won Eurovision Song CZ 2020, was internally selected in 2021, in 2022 they had national selection ESCZ 2022 Iceland: Daði & Gagnamagnið won Söngvakeppnin 2020, were internally selected for 2021, Söngvakeppnin returned in 2022
Serbia: Hurricane won Beovizija 2020, were internally selected for 2021, in 2022 they had national selection Pesma za Evroviziju '22
Latvia: Samanta Tina won Supernova 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Supernova returned in 2022
Slovenia: Ana Soklič won EMA 2020, was internally selected for 2021, EMA returned in 2022
Australia: Montaigne won Eurovision - Australia Decides 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Australia Decides returned in 2022
Israel: Eden Alene won Rising Star 2020, was internally selected for 2021, in 2022 The X Factor Israel was used as the national selection
Romania: Roxen's entry was selected via Selecția Națională 2020, she was internally selected for 2021 as was her song, and Selecția Națională returned in 2022
Ukraine: Go_A won Vidbir 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Vidbir returned in 2022
Malta: Destiny was chosen via The X Factor 2020, internally selected for 2021, and in 2022 Malta Eurovision Song Contest was used as the national selection

I’m once again here to remind y’all that SSE offering a Pay-Once Lifetime subscription to their MMORPG is incredibly uncommon and generous as fuck and that the default subscription in most of the industry is forced monthly subscriptions
Being able to pay the same amount of money that I’d be able to get a 10 hour game on Steam for, what for me atleast, is 11 years of content is absolutely insane in this genre of games

For no other reason than because I think about them a lot, my not-in-order top 5 songs that should have made it to Eurovision but ripped my heart in half instead Electric Fields - 2000 and whatever
youtube
I'm pretty sure this song exists outside of the space-time continuum I feel like Australia in Eurovision either goes very sleak or absolute circus, and what's in between kinda gets lost on the way This one was fresh, flowy, very millennial in a way, also hearing bits of australian aboriginal languages in ESC would have been hella cool Madara - Esamība
youtube
If you've ever stumbled upon my blog in 2018 you may know how mad I was that Latvia didn't choose this (and no deep crush on Laura Rizzotto ever managed to heal that anger asdfghjkl) This is just one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard :" It's existential, it's symbolic, it's ethereal, it has a slow but mighty fine build-up, and plus it was composed on that wonderful cello sound, which, AHHHHHH Loreen - Statements
youtube
At this point I get it, in Melodifestivalen songs need to be awesome "on the spot", because its audience doesn't really like to have to think about them more than once to understand them This probably sounds insulting lol but I think it's just a big cultural difference (I don't think it's a coincidence that there was a part of the Italian fandom who actually did root for this at the time, it was much more up their alley than Euphoria ever had any chance to be) The choral, deeply meaningful performance, the raw power in her voice, the historical references...this was never going to win Mello, in hindsight it was clear to see, but I'm still glad Loreen brought it to life and showed she isn't just cool beats and dancey vibes KEiiNO - Monument
youtube
This isn't even a scar, it's an open wound and it's still bleeding :" They didn't have to be in the 2021 line-up to win, they had to be in it because 2021 was the strongest year since 1991 and they were literally the only great thing missing from it and deserved to be there to make it even stronger Hands down the one that hurt the most out of all of these Tosca - Il terzo fuochista
youtube
I am cheating a little bit with this one because this competed in Sanremo 2007, so even if it had won it wouldn't have gone to ESC anyway because we were still on voluntary exile :" 2007 was my first Sanremo, I was just a kid and this mesmerized me to the point it has lived in my head ever since, there's only Tosca singing it but it's basically a choral reenactment of a typical italian country fair that culminates in fireworks (yes you could say this song is literally about fireworks AND feelings lol it can be done Salvador!) This is a peak of musical creativity that Sanremo, even in its mostly recurring attention to quality, doesn't reach very often My favourite Sanremo song ever

if there's nothing left of you and me there's nothing left of me: An Ode to the Amazing Songs We Lost in the Eurovision National Final Season 2023
YouTube Playlist Here
National final season always means that we lose some fantastic songs that won’t ever get to grace to the big ESC stage, but I can memorialize all the other tracks I love here. This list contains the songs that got away, as well as some of the guilty pleasures, and songs I simply enjoy listening to, from the NF season of 2023.
Note that this is my personal taste, so I might be missing something you jive with. Songs are arranged by flow, not in a ranking. Some videos I likely will have to replace with another upload at some point. I went with studio recordings to be consistent (barring the bonus track).
This playlist is in no way meant to put down the actual winners.

If Loreen does win tonight, expect me to peace out, because there will be Disc Horse™ and I've frankly had enough of people hating on Sweden for breathing in the wrong direction these past few years.
It's fine to not like an entry, but there's no need to be essentialist about it. Does Sweden do well with the juries? Generally, yeah. But we also do well in the televote most of the time.
In the 6 years we've had this new split voting system, where they announce the jury and televote separately, there have only been two (2) years where the juries gave us disproportionately more points than the televote (2018 and 2019, when we came 2nd in the jury vote but 22nd and 9th in televote respectively). These years happened to be consecutive though, and directly preceded 2020 when the contest was cancelled due to Covid, which I suspect is how the narrative of "Sweden: the juries' pet" was able to take root the way it did.
Apart from those two years though, we've only had two years where we received moderately more points from the juries than the televote (2017 and 2022, nether of which we were even close to the respective "worst offenders" - Australia and Portugal), and in the remaining two years (2016 and 2021) we received more points from the televote than from the juries.
Have we been doing well in the past few years? Undoubtedly. But that is not in spite of the televote, it is because our national selection (Melodifestivalen) consistently favours entries that will do well with both the public and the juries, of which the juries happen to be slightly more predictable. Does it result in our entries being somewhat soulless and corporate "widest market appeal possible"-sounding? Yes, I think that's often the case, and I'd love to see more musical diversity from us too.
Again: it's completely fine to dislike our entries! What I do take issue with however is the insinuation that "urgh, Sweden could send literally anything and the juries would still put them in the top 5!"—because it carries conspiratorial undertones that do not hold water when you look at the actual results. It's not our fault the general public are basic bitches, nor that you expected them not to be.
All I ask is that if and when you take issue with the juries, or a perceived "bland-pop-isation" of eurovision, direct that frustration at the actual problem rather than singling out Sweden or any other country as a scapegoat. This is a structural issue with the contest itself, not a plot to favour or undermine any specific country. In the end, this is a popularity contest. Take it for what it is, and if you are interested in more diverse or specific musical styles, perhaps lower your expectations or look elsewhere. And if you want to see actual change, Tumblr isn't the place you'll achieve it.
The only thing that posting and tagging your hate on Tumblr, or sending anon hate, will achieve is poisoning the fandom community, and as a Swedish eurovision fan I can say that this has made me reluctant to participate in the fandom for several years. Being considerate and respectful of each others' opinions, while focusing on the positives of your interest, are the keys to everyone having a good time in fandom—so I say let's strive for that, yeah?

I absolutely love Loreen, but I hope she doesn't win tonight
Especially since she has already won eurovision. It just comes of as playing it safe by sending someone who has already won
Her song is great and I love that she's participating but God I hope she doesn't win
yeah like okay she can participate in Melodifestivalen as much as she wants and if she wins then good for her and the fans. but i agree with you, it may be a personal preference but i don’t like seeing the same artists participating in esc more than once, let alone seeing them having chances of winning again
i wouldn’t say the same for group efforts tho. like i know for my country that we‘ve sent Helena Paparizou twice, she represented us in 2005 but also in 2001 as part of Antique. and same with Sanja Vučić who represented Serbia in 2016 but later as part of Hurricane in 2020/2021

1993 Millstreet - Number 15 - Arvingarna - "Eloïse"
youtube
Another band who made it to the Eurovision final, this time Swedish dansband and Beach Boys tribute act Arvingarna. They won the 1993 Melodifestivalen with relative ease, winning the televote in every single region of Sweden. When they got to Millstreet, they also did well, finishing in 7th place overall. They had the misfortune not only of following France, but also singing directly before the winner Niamh Kavanagh which might explain why they perhaps underperformed.
As I've suggested, this has the close harmonies and ba-ba-bas of the Beach Boys. It moves along at brisk pace, and is another overly attached boy with another broken heart pleading for another chance that isn't going to come. Unfortunately in this case, his former love's name is Eloise, bringing to mind Barry Ryan (and the Damned) and his twin brother Paul, who wrote a much better song with the same name.
Nevertheless this is pleasant enough. Arvingarna are all the sons of previous dansband musicians from Sweden hence their name which translates as The Heirs. They had a brief previous incarnation as a metal band (really) before taking up the preferred musical genre of their forefathers. They had five more attempts at Melodifestivalen after this making them one of Sweden's Eurovision regulars. Their most recent attempt was as late as 2021. The best subsequent showing was third in 1999.
