Favorite Song From Each Country! Part 10/37: Moldova!
Hello hello! We are back with yet another addition to my little silly series! It's crazy for me to think that we are almost a THIRD of the way there! I have been looking forward to today's episode so let's get to it!
Today's country is...Moldova!
Ah, yes. Moldova! They are famous (or infamous depending on the person) to provide the guilty pleasures almost every year at the contest! Since I got my family hooked in 2022, this has become my sister's favorite country...I think. But anyway, whether they send a returning artist (like they did the past couple of years) or someone new, we are guaranteed to have a little fun when we let loose with Moldova!
Favorite Entry: While Moldova has provided many favorites in the contest, there are two that are really tight and change almost every time I hear the other one. There's the oh so famous "Run Away" from Sunstroke Project's first appearance at the contest in 2010 which created the Epic Sax Guy meme. And while "Run Away" is fun and a total guilty pleasure, I have to go with a more mellow entry: Aliona Moon's "O Mie" from 2013. After sending a familiar face which we will get to later in 2012, this familiar face write the 2013 song, which I think is interesting for me to cover. And I just love this song so much. It's calming and epic at the same time, which makes it stand out from other entries. It shot to the top of my 2013 ranking when I first heard it, and I'm reminded why every time I hear it. RANK: 11th in 2013 Grand Final/PERSONAL RANK: 1st of 39 Countries *"Run Away" ranked 22nd in the 2010 Grand Final and Personally Ranked 3rd of 39 Countries*
Thoughts On 2023 Entry: So, that familiar face from 2012 that wrote the 2013 entry? That is the one and only Pasha Parfeni with "Soarele si Luna" this year! He also marks the first of FIVE returning contestants being covered this year! Since I did my speedruns of Eurovisions 2009-2021 back in December 2021, I had learned about Moldova's guilty pleasure charm, and this song, along with Pasha's 2012 song "Lautar" follow through with. And that's about the only thing they have in common with each other. This song, while ranked at a decent place, has been growing on me more and more with each snippet I hear (and full listen like I'm doing now). What also helps is that this is my sister's winner this year (after Moldova was one of her three winners last year alongside Armenia and Estonia). Also, if you get the chance, I know of an Instagram reel that talks a little about the song, and the subject is just so wholesome! RANK: 18th in 2023 Grand Final/PERSONAL RANK: 17th of 37 Countries

Meet the Liverpool 2023 Eurovision Artists
Pasha Parfeni from Moldova 🇲🇩
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eurovision runs through Pasha Parfeni’s veins, having been involved with multiple national final songs in Moldova, as well as representing the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2012, where he finished 11th.
The following year, he joined forces with his wife Yuliana to compose Moldova’s entry O Mie for Aliona Moon. Aliona had been a backing vocalist for Pasha in 2012, and this time he took to the Eurovision stage to accompany her on the piano.
The lyrics of Pasha’s 2023 entry Soarele și Luna, were written by his wife and muse, Yuliana Scutaru.
Pasha is also known for his activism, using his music and performances to stand up for freedoms.

Song Review: Moldova
I was ready to write a review for Epic Sax Guy: Electric Boogaloo, but I’m glad I don’t have to. Instead, let’s welcome a 2012 returnee! Perhaps him and Loreen will have a reunion?
Pasha Parfeni - Soarele și Luna
Personal opinion: This is a great ethnic track! Kind of reminds me of Go_A back in 2021, both being strong cultural songs with a catchy, simple melody and an epic flute solo. Very excited to see this on the big stage! The costumes were so on point. Pasha sounded a bit too quiet at times, I wonder if it was a technical error? His vocals sounded great in the preselection, so I wouldn't be too worried.
Prediction: Moldova has created some amazing stage performances in the past few years. I don’t doubt this song will be epic on the Liverpool stage. But I also wonder if it will be quite enough? Televoters tend to like ethnic songs, but it isn’t always a given (see: Horehronie). And Czechia also has quite a strong ethnic bop in the running on the same semi, so. It might be a bit though, but I have faith in Pasha. His stage performance was more convincing than that of the Vesna girls, in the end. Could be in the final top 10 or just barely miss it.
Thoughts on selection: Not the strongest one but not the worst. There were some gems amongst the generic tracks and the weak vocals. Aside from the winning song, I enjoyed Aliona Moon the most (too bad the stream went into lag mode when it was her turn), as well as the sisters. Perhaps Moldova could just ditch the selection next year and send Aliona internally, she if anyone deserves a comeback.

We’ve got three national finals this Saturday, one of which is Moldova’s Etapa Națională. I’ll admit to skipping the auditions for this one, but here’s my ranking of the finalists:
Pasha Parfeni – Soarele şi Luna
Aliona Moon – Du-mă
Surorile Osoianu – Bade, bădişor, bădiţă
SunStroke Project – Yummy Mummy
Nördika – Damn and down
OL – Why You Play It Cool
Donia – Red Zone
Corina Ivanov – When Love’s Real
Victor Gulick – Let’s Dance
Cosmina – Indestructible
I won’t lie, I considered briefly checking out the non-qualifying auditions, but given the level of some of the songs that made it, I decided it wasn’t worth it. There’s a fair few weak songs and performances here. However, from a Eurovision perspective, you only need to have one good song in your National Final, and as far as I’m concerned, Moldova have three.
Of those, Pasha Parfeni has my favourite! It’s such a different vibe from his 2012 entry (which I also love), moody and suspenseful. I think it’s easily the best produced track of this selection, I love the beat and it works so well with the flute which gives this song its distinct sound. You can’t go wrong with folk/electro fusion!
The artist I was most excited to see here before listening to the songs was Aliona Moon, since her song from 2013 is my favourite of that year! Du-mă doesn’t quite reach the heights of O Mie, but it’s still a decent song. Like Soarele şi Luna, it melds some traditional styles with a modern beat, and it’s a sound I enjoy. Aliona remains a fantastic singer, I especially like her vocal moment with the extended note about two-thirds through. I will say the song does risk feeling a little flat with the lack of different levels in the music, but with an atmospheric staging this could be very special.
While I prefer my top two here, I did also enjoy Bade, bădişor, bădiţă a lot. It’s a very traditional style, and I appreciate that. It’s also got a good energy to it, it makes me want to move along. The performance in the audition was a little stiff, but Surorile Osoianu clearly have a great time singing together.
I'm definitely hoping for Pasha, but I'd also be very happy with Aliona Moon or Surorile Osoianu getting the ticket to Liverpool. Despite being in the top half of my ranking, I actually hope we don't get SunStroke Project again, their charisma is undeniable, but Yummy Mummy just isn’t up to their previous Eurovision entries. The sax hook in particular feels weaker, I find it unmemorable, which is a big problem for a song like this. However, in the end, it’s all up to Moldova what they pick!
