1993 Millstreet - Number 11 - Ruth Jacott - "Vrede"
youtube
Ruth's back! This time with Vrede (Peace), the song that won the Nationaal Songfestival song selection and went to Eurovision in Millstreet. This song finished 6th, a creditable performance - although many think it should have done even better. It's a well-written, slightly humorous song celebrating a host of engineering achievements contrasted with the lack of effort and results in realm of world peace. Yes another peace song in 1993.
It has a a relatively contemporary if conventional club beat and some dramatic horns to start and a little interlude of scratching noises before the bridge. Ruth delivers her message wearing some astonishingly flare black trousers as well low cut jacket with an absolutely massive collar and lapel. She knows her camera angles and there's choreographed hand-ography. And boy can she belt. She's a stellar performer, perhaps only beaten by one other on the night in terms of song delivery.
I went into Ruth's future career in the previous blog and she's now the first artist to have appeared twice in my top 26s, helped there by taking part in a song selection national final.

ESC History
The ECS finals are this weekend and while I’m hoping LotL will score a good place, while I hope for a fun-filled evening, there is something I want to share, to remember, that is having its 30th anniversary as well.
I might date myself, but honestly I don’t really care much. The year was 1993 and I was a kid watching Eurovision with my parents. The time came for the voting and then this happened:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hs-Bmme7qdI&list=RDHs-Bmme7qdI&start_radio=1
I was young and didn’t understand it at that time, but by now I know that the band from Bosnia are without doubt, the biggest badasses to ever. Because they were from Sarajevo, a city under siege for almost 10 months at that time, because they had to break out of the city to fly to Ireland and compete (their conductor? Yeah he was unable to come because the frontline had shifted and the corridor the band had used was no longer usable. The band had to borrow an Irish conductor).
This band was singing in Bosnian, they gained 27 points which earned them the 16th place, and then they went back... to Sarajevo, a city under siege until early 1996.
This was their  song:

Eurovision Fact #536:
Tumblr media
As a result of the semi-final allocation draw, Luxembourg will be taking part in the second half of the first semi-final.
The last time the nation participated in Eurovision in 1993, they performed in the second half of the final, although the halves were not yet formally dubbed yet.

Millstreet 1993 Wrap Up
Tumblr media
1993 draws to a close with Ireland victorious again, but with Belgium topping my poll. Millstreet may have been the smallest town to ever host Eurovision, but the venue was far from quiet. The audience got more involved with several of the acts. Unsurprisingly Niamh Kavanagh got the loudest cheer of the night, not only because she was Ireland's representative, but for the quality of her singing and song. She was absolutely a well deserved winner on the night.
Overall 1993 was stronger than 1992. This is born out not only from the number of songs that have made it into my own personal top 26 from the year, but also there are eight entries in the songfestival.be/ESC Radio annual top 500 for this year - twice as many as 1992.
Unsurprisingly many of the songs had peace as a theme, ultimately though a traditional love ballad won (again). The staging was simple, but perhaps gained from that. The geometric, flat expanse of the stage left the acts exposed, but also brought the audience to them. The sound mixing was outstanding, with crisp, clear vocals not being swamped by the backing, nor being left without support.
The National Final scene was a little weaker than 1992. There are more songs to pick from in 1993, but there are more duds and less to get excited about, again reflected in the lower number of national final songs in this top 26. There's definitely a sense that the juries made more correct decisions - with the astonishing exception of Belgium. What were they thinking?
The contests organised by the new countries on the whole are great. They suffer somewhat in terms of financial restraint (and in Bosnia's case because of the war), but the array of music they had were much more diverse than the long time entrants. Bosnia's final was wonderful, while I would love to blow the trumpet for Belgium's final as well I can't as it's just not accessible thanks to the broadcaster.
There were more song selection finals this year, although the UK final had improved while the Dutch one was fun, even if it was a step down in quality after the heights of Nationaal Songfestival 1992. English language songs once again dominated - although this year Dutch was the language of choice for the better songs in my opinion.
There were some sour notes. The seven countries that finished bottom were 'relegated' for the first time, to allow other countries to take their place. No only would this mean that the pre-qualification competition would be the last, but it forced some traditional Eurovision competitors like Belgium and Denmark to skip the next year. That had ramifications in Denmark for the contestant who was scapegoated for the performance, even though there was nothing wrong with it. Luxembourg were also one of the relegated countries, and they never returned.
Italy then chose also to leave Eurovision - the country of Sanremo no longer participating. Almost unthinkable. This did reprieve Cyprus however. This was also the year that saw Barbara Dex finish last in a homemade dress - something which was to spawn another piece of fan negativity a few years later.
Despite all this, 1993 was a good year. A traditional Irish party in the heart of rural Ireland that was stuffed full of good songs.

"Poi non è che la vita vada come tu te la immagini. Fa la sua strada. E tu la tua. E non sono la stessa strada. Così… Io non è che volevo essere felice, questo no. Volevo… salvarmi, ecco: salvarmi. Ma ho capito tardi da che parte bisognava andare: dalla parte dei desideri. Uno si aspetta che siano altre cose a salvare la gente: il dovere, l'onestà, essere buoni, essere giusti. No. Sono i desideri che salvano.
