MY FAVOURITE EUROVISION ENTRIES: DAY 23 - IRELAND

A powerhouse country, especially in the 90′s where they won in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996. Things have been rough for Ireland in the 21st century however. But they still remain one of the strongest countries in the contest, possibly only rivalling Sweden and the way things are going since they entered, Ukraine. 

Today we go back to Johnny Logan’s SECOND win in the 1980′s with Hold Me Now in 1987. He previously won for Ireland back in 1980 and went on to compose Linda Martin’s winning song in 1992. 

A good mix of his contributions can be found for his appearances at various Eurovision festivals and Allsang på Grensen.

Other strong contenders from Ireland include Niamh Kavanagh’s winning entry in 1993 with In Your Eyes and her 2010 entry, It’s For You.

Storia Di Musica # 313 - AA.VV. - She Rocks Volume 1, 2017

Un giovane chitarrista di origini italiane (i nonni arrivarono negli Stati Uniti dalla Lomellina) nel 1978, quando ha appena 18 anni, manda una cassetta e una trascrizione del leggendario pezzo The Black Page al suo creatore, Frank Zappa. Il brano si chiama così perchè lo spartito è così pieno di segni musicali (punti, segni, note) ed è famoso perchè di una complessità mostruosa. Zappa impressionato dal talento del giovane chitarrista lo contatta e dopo che il nostro giovane eroe finisce la scuola, lo invita a Los Angeles, gli fa un provino e lo stipendia prima come trascrittore ufficiale e poi, dal 1980 fino al 1985, lo porta sul palco e in studio a registrare, presentandolo come il suo "little Italian virtuoso" e gli assegna spettacolari assolo definiti "impossible guitar parts". Quel giovane chitarrista è Steve Vai, unanimemente considerato uno dei più grandi chitarristi di tutti i tempi. Oltre ai dischi, ai concerti, ai premi, al ruolo di innovatore dello strumento (leggendarie le chitarre Ibanez Jem con lui sviluppate) il suo è sempre stato un lavoro di ricerca sia strumentale sia umano: cacciatore di talenti prima, e poi produttore ed editore musicale. Nel 1999 infatti fonda insieme a Ray Scherr, il fondatore di Guitar Center, la più grande catena di negozi di strumenti musicali di tutte le Americhe (con oltre 300 negozi) una etichetta discografica, Favored Nations, con il preciso obiettivo di sviluppare la musica chitarristica, di scovare nuovi artisti e di produrre quelli già affermati. Il primo disco prodotto è del 2000, Coming To Your Senses del chitarrista jazz fusion Frank Gambale, di lì in poi è un susseguirsi di grandi nomi. A metà del decennio successivo, Vai sente la necessità di rispondere, con un disco, ad una domanda: Who says the ladies can’t rock?.

Per questo in collaborazione con l'associazione Women’s International Music Network mette su una compilation, insieme con Brad Tolinski, direttore di una delle bibbie dei chitarristi e chitarriste, Guitar World, di strepitose chitarriste, a cui dà il titolo di She Rocks Vol.1, sottotitolo: A Collection of Kick-Ass Guitar Goddesses, che esce nel gennaio del 2017. In scaletta 11 brani di 11 chitarriste che comprendono diversi generi, dal jazz rock al blues, ma che spingono forte verso l'hard rock e l'heavy metal, per un assortimento niente male. C'è una delle scoperte di Vai, la tedesca Yasi Hofer (qui presente con una torrida sua composizione, Cosmic Star), c'è la leggenda del rock femminile Lita Ford, delle Runwayas, che si unisce alle Lez Zeppelin, una tribute band femminile dei mitici Led Zeppelin, cantando The Lemon Song (uno dei testi più maliziosi ed erotici del catalogo di Plant e soci, nello slang "lemon" è una metafora del pene) accompagnata da Steph Paynes, che nella compilation regala una meravigliosa The Sun At Her Eastern Gate (Payne è stata anche scrittrice e giornalista del rock per riviste come il New Music Express e Rolling Stone). C'è il blues di U Know What I Like di Kat Dyson (che è stata più volte la lead guitar dei tour internazionali di Zucchero), il trascinante heavy metal di Transmogrify, brano scritto da Orianthi, chitarrista e polistrumentista australiana che accompagnò Micheal Jackson nel suo ultimo tour This Is It. Jackson era un grande estimatore di chitarriste, tanto che nella compilation c'è pure il contributo di un'altra sua storica sessionista, Jennifer Batten, che lo ha accompagnato nei tour di Bad, Dangerous e History: qui è presente la sua In The Aftermath. Si passa dal jazz rock di Sarah Longfield (The Taxi Time Travel Task Force) alle sonorità sofisticate di Yvette Young, uno dei talenti più puri in circolazione (Hydra), alle super prove di nomi più famosi come Nita Strauss (la chitarrista di Alice Cooper), che contribuisce con Pandemonium e Gretchen Menn con Scrap Metal. Da ricordare anche il brano di Nili Brosh, A Matter Of Perception, la chitarrista è stata per anni star degli spettacoli musicali del Cirque Du Soleil e insieme ad altre protagoniste di questa compilation suonerà in una tribute band, The Iron Maidens, che omaggia al femminile la musica degli inglesi Iron Maiden. In copertina c'è un disegno di Laura B. Whitmore, musicista, produttrice e ex manager di importantissime etichette discografiche, che nel 2012 fondò la WiMN per fornire supporto, informazioni e un senso di comunità alle donne in tutti gli aspetti del settore musicale, compresi artisti, addetti ai lavori, educatori e studenti.

La dicitura Vol.1 mi ha fatto sempre sperare in un Vol.2 che al momento non è ancora arrivato. Tuttavia questo disco è prova viva che " A Lady Can Surely Rocks".

Eurovision Fact #342:

In total, there have been 11 sets of twins at Eurovision.

The first pair to appear was the Kessler twins, who represented Germany in 1959. The Kesslers finished 8th overall.

Next, Luxembourg was represented by Sophie and Magaly Gilles in 1980. The sisters finished 9th overall.

In 2004, the Turkish entry, Athena, was comprised of twin brothers Hakan and Gökhan Özoğuz. The pair finished 4th in the Grand Final, the best result by any set of twins at Eurovision.

North Macedonia's 2009 entry, rock band Next Time, also consisted of twin brothers. Martin and Stefan Filipovski unfortunately did not make it to the Grand Final, placing 10th in the First Semi-Final.

The following year, the Belarusian group 3+2 brought twin sisters Alena and Ninel Karpovich, the "2" in 3+2, to the Eurovision stage. The group finished 24th in the Grand Final.

2011 saw two sets of twins: John and Edward Grimes representing Ireland as Jedward, and sisters Daniela and Veronika represtned Slovakia as TWiiNS. Jedward finished 8th in the Grand Final, but TWiiNS only placed 13th in the Second Semi-Final.

The following year, Jedward returned to represent Ireland, but only managed to place 19th in the Grand Final.

In 2014 there was once again two sets of twins: France was represented by the group TWIN TWIN, which consisted of Eurovision's first fraternal twins, Lorent and François Ardouvin, and their friend Patrick. The group finished last, 26th, at the Grand Final. On the other hand, Russia was represented by the Tolmachevy Sisters, Anastasia and Maria. The duo also won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2006. At Copenhagen, they managed to place 7th in the Grand Final.

In 2017, the group OG3NE, representing the Netherlands, consisted of three sisters, two of which were fraternal twins: Amy and Shelley. The two are a year younger than their sister Lisa. The group placed 11th at the Grand Final.

Finally, for this year's contest (2023), Azerbaijan will be represented by TuralTuranX.

E questa storia dei musulmani ha avuto anche dei risvolti nella nostra convivenza in Rue des Tanneurs perché la sera che era di turno in cucina Jeff aveva preparato un potage Campbell’s senza tanto badare a quello che c'era nella scatola e Ibrahim dopo qualche cucchiaiata comincia a farsi serio e stropicciare il naso e grattarsi il mento pensieroso e lisciarsi il baffo perplesso e chiedere infine che cosa c'è nel piatto e noi “verdure, son verdure Ibrahim” ma lui sembra proprio che avverta in gola un brutto, davvero brutto sapore e allora corre nel cestino dei rifiuti, recupera la scatoletta e legge gli ingredienti, poi arriva incazzatissimo dove sediamo a mangiare e urla che l'abbiamo fatto apposta qui c'è della carne impura e via di seguito, tanto che noi subito ci spaventiamo ma poi ci gettiamo a ridere perché Ibrahim si mette col capo a terra a far scongiuri e belare non si capisce bene che cazzo di Allah e poi s'infila alla brutto-dio un dito in gola per vomitare quel pezzetto di wurstel che c'era nel piatto… Ma soprattutto gli spagnoli sono bellagente e ci trattano come fossimo americani sbarcati in centrafrica, tutti premurosi e gioviali. Conosciamo Gonzales che ha una drogheria e noi gli abbiamo esaurito la scorta di spaghetti. Ci presenta il figlio di sedicianni che verrà poi con noi qualche sera al Jeu-de-Balle a bere la Trapiste. Gonzales ci racconta ogni volta degli italiani che ha conosciuto, “Ah, les italiens!” dice aprendo il suo sorriso baffuto e grasso eppoi estrae dal bancone una chitarra e intona funiculì-funiculà cha-cha-cha e io rido e applaudo e la moglie esce dal retrobottega e ci offre un sorso di vino spagnolo con la piccola Esterella di cinque anni stretta al sottanone e noi stiamo bene a sentirci italiani e ne siamo anche fieri e orgogliosi che capiamo che questi legami qui sono nati tra la gente che lavora mica trattati a tavolino da diplomatici o ministri del cazzo, che di loro ci vergognamo sì, altroché. “

“Secondo me” è il singolo d’esordio di Dj Faxbeat, al secolo Fabrizio Russo. Il cantautore e producer di Asti porta avanti il suo percorso artistico decennale confezionando un brano orecchiabile con un testo mai banale.

Fabrizio Russo, nome d’arte Dj Faxbeat, è un produttore musicale, rapper e cantautore di Asti. Il suo suono è molto distintivo ed immediatamente riconoscibile ed incorpora elementi di musica elettronica, R&B, Funk, Afro.

Nel 2005 crea la One Night “The Flow! Hip-Hop r’n’b night” ed anima le serate dei club della sua città suonando insieme anche ad ospiti come BigFish, Esa e molti altri.

Nel 2009 incide "Origine di Futuro”, un album di 17 brani che vede la partecipazione di alcuni artisti emergenti della sua città natale.

Nel 2012 incide il singolo "Per Ora" con Tormento.

Nel 2013 apre i live dei Club Dogo, J-Ax e General Levy.

Dal 2014 ad oggi inventa un nuovo genere musicale, l'E.S.M, acronimo di Electronic Scratch Music, genere in cui suona il giradischi come strumento musicale.

Nel 2015 vince l'award come Best DJ 2015 dalla WSSA.

Forma assieme a Davide Calabrese e Beppe Di Filippo il gruppo UNTZ di cui ne è tuttora dj e scratcher performer.

Nel 2016 esce “Body”, l'album sperimentale di scratch e strumentali totalmente prodotto e suonato da Dj Faxbeat (con alcune collaborazioni) in cui utilizza il giradischi come voce sui beat.

Suona nei club fino al 2019 quando si ferma in studio per una personale ricerca musicale fino al 2024. L’8 marzo 2024 decide quindi di uscire con il suo singolo “Secondo Me”, sotto il nome di Dj Faxbeat.
