“  Di italiani non ce ne sono, quei pochi rimasti in Belgio stanno ancora alle mines, gli altri sono ormai tornati. Però tutti qui hanno il ricordo della nostra razza e quando giriamo Rue Blaes per la spesa ci riconoscono e ci fanno festa, anche i musulmani ai quali tante volte abbiamo fatto la gaffe di chiedere del prosciutto e quelli “Rien vian-de de porc! Rien!” ma poi, capita la buonafede, han fatto i gentili e i simpatici. E questa storia dei musulmani ha avuto anche dei risvolti nella nostra convivenza in Rue des Tanneurs perché la sera che era di turno in cucina Jeff aveva preparato un potage Campbell’s senza tanto badare a quello che c'era nella scatola e Ibrahim dopo qualche cucchiaiata comincia a farsi serio e stropicciare il naso e grattarsi il mento pensieroso e lisciarsi il baffo perplesso e chiedere infine che cosa c'è nel piatto e noi “verdure, son verdure Ibrahim” ma lui sembra proprio che avverta in gola un brutto, davvero brutto sapore e allora corre nel cestino dei rifiuti, recupera la scatoletta e legge gli ingredienti, poi arriva incazzatissimo dove sediamo a mangiare e urla che l'abbiamo fatto apposta qui c'è della carne impura e via di seguito, tanto che noi subito ci spaventiamo ma poi ci gettiamo a ridere perché Ibrahim si mette col capo a terra a far scongiuri e belare non si capisce bene che cazzo di Allah e poi s'infila alla brutto-dio un dito in gola per vomitare quel pezzetto di wurstel che c'era nel piatto… Ma soprattutto gli spagnoli sono bellagente e ci trattano come fossimo americani sbarcati in centrafrica, tutti premurosi e gioviali. Conosciamo Gonzales che ha una drogheria e noi gli abbiamo esaurito la scorta di spaghetti. Ci presenta il figlio di sedicianni che verrà poi con noi qualche sera al Jeu-de-Balle a bere la Trapiste. Gonzales ci racconta ogni volta degli italiani che ha conosciuto, “Ah, les italiens!” dice aprendo il suo sorriso baffuto e grasso eppoi estrae dal bancone una chitarra e intona funiculì-funiculà cha-cha-cha e io rido e applaudo e la moglie esce dal retrobottega e ci offre un sorso di vino spagnolo con la piccola Esterella di cinque anni stretta al sottanone e noi stiamo bene a sentirci italiani e ne siamo anche fieri e orgogliosi che capiamo che questi legami qui sono nati tra la gente che lavora mica trattati a tavolino da diplomatici o ministri del cazzo, che di loro ci vergognamo sì, altroché. “

Antonio Allegri, called Correggio, was a renowned master of fresco painting and altar pictures depicting the Madonna and saints. He rarely turned to portraiture. This canvas signed by the artist ranks among the best works in the Hermitage collection of Italian paintings. The unknown lady is depicted under a laurel that is a symbol of poetry and hints at her poetic talents. The strict composition and the noble combination of white, brown, dark green and blue colours emphasize the cold beauty of the face. The sitter is shown wearing a mourning dress. Her brown robe and belt evidence that she belongs to the Franciscan Order. On the chalice there is a Greek inscription, a quotation from Homer's Odyssey, recalling the moment when Helen is giving a bowl of wine to Telemachus with a drink which brings forgetfulness and drowns sorrow. The tree-trunk wound around with ivy symbolizes faithfulness and eternal love.
