With twins returning to Eurovision this year via Azerbaijan, we need some twin participant facts: how many, the first (Germany 1959, both still alive), the sad story of Sophie and Magaly, the fact that Netherlands 2021 had twins, etc.

Eurovision Fact #337:

Germany's 1959 representatives, Alice and Ellen Kessler, were the first twins to ever perform in the Eurovision Song Contest. The duo is most famous for their dancing abilities, and have appeared in many films in the 50s and 60s. Their song 'Heut' Woll'n Wir Tanzen Geh'n' placed 8th overall.

The Kesslers started their careers in 1942 and are still active actors today.

The twins' were very popular in the United States in the late 50s and 60s, but remain heavily popular in their native Germany and Italy.

In fact, when they agreed to be on the cover of the Italian edition of Playboy at the age of 40, that edition of the magazine sold more copies than any other edition in history, and the record still stands.

Shakespeare Weekend!

Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth, is volume twenty-one of the thirty-seven volume The Comedies Histories & Tragedies of William Shakespeare, published by the Limited Editions Club (LEC) from 1939-1940. Macbeth was first printed in the folio of 1623. 

Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966) illustrated Macbeth. He was an renowned actor, son of the even more renowned Ellen Terry, who was once considered one of the worlds most famous men in theater. He also was also a noted wood-engraver, even though he only actually illustrated one book with wood engravings, an edition of Hamlet published by Count Harry Kessler at The Cranach Presse. 

His illustrations for Macbeth, perhaps unfortunately, are not done in wood-engraving. Those working at The Limited Editions Club seemed to have excitedly pushed for the use of color, to express the rich costumes in the play. These illustrations were drawn with lithographic crayon on brown paper then reproduced in lithography by Fernand Mourlot in Paris. 

The volumes in the set were printed in an edition of 1950 copies at the Press of A. Colish, and each was illustrated by a different artist, but the unifying factor is that all volumes were designed by famed book and type designer Bruce Rogers and edited by the British theatre professional and Shakespeare specialist Herbert Farjeon. Our copy is number 1113, the number for long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Eurovision Fact #342:

In total, there have been 11 sets of twins at Eurovision.

The first pair to appear was the Kessler twins, who represented Germany in 1959. The Kesslers finished 8th overall.

Next, Luxembourg was represented by Sophie and Magaly Gilles in 1980. The sisters finished 9th overall.

In 2004, the Turkish entry, Athena, was comprised of twin brothers Hakan and Gökhan Özoğuz. The pair finished 4th in the Grand Final, the best result by any set of twins at Eurovision.

North Macedonia's 2009 entry, rock band Next Time, also consisted of twin brothers. Martin and Stefan Filipovski unfortunately did not make it to the Grand Final, placing 10th in the First Semi-Final.

The following year, the Belarusian group 3+2 brought twin sisters Alena and Ninel Karpovich, the "2" in 3+2, to the Eurovision stage. The group finished 24th in the Grand Final.

2011 saw two sets of twins: John and Edward Grimes representing Ireland as Jedward, and sisters Daniela and Veronika represtned Slovakia as TWiiNS. Jedward finished 8th in the Grand Final, but TWiiNS only placed 13th in the Second Semi-Final.

The following year, Jedward returned to represent Ireland, but only managed to place 19th in the Grand Final.

In 2014 there was once again two sets of twins: France was represented by the group TWIN TWIN, which consisted of Eurovision's first fraternal twins, Lorent and François Ardouvin, and their friend Patrick. The group finished last, 26th, at the Grand Final. On the other hand, Russia was represented by the Tolmachevy Sisters, Anastasia and Maria. The duo also won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2006. At Copenhagen, they managed to place 7th in the Grand Final.

In 2017, the group OG3NE, representing the Netherlands, consisted of three sisters, two of which were fraternal twins: Amy and Shelley. The two are a year younger than their sister Lisa. The group placed 11th at the Grand Final.

Finally, for this year's contest (2023), Azerbaijan will be represented by TuralTuranX.

BRUNO TOGNI TRIONFA AL CIRCUS KRONE BAU Mai come quest’anno il Circo Italiano trionfa in Europa, soprattutto in Germania (il mercato più interessante per il circo di tradizione), dove nelle case più importanti svettano tanti artisti nostri connazionali a testimoniare l’elevato livello artistico che il nostro Paese sa esprimere in ambito circense. GUARDA IL VIDEO In genere cerchiamo su queste pagine di riconoscere ed evidenziare questi traguardi, ma non sempre riusciamo a coprire tutti i casi. Non ce ne voglia nessuno. Al Krone Bau (forse la casa più prestigiosa per il circo tradizionale con animali in Europa) in queste settimane, nello spettacolo invernale “Stars in der Manege” troviamo due stelle del made in Italy: Dede Larible e Bruno Togni.

Per Bruno è la realizzazione di un sogno oltre che un’occasione per scaldare i motori in previsione della imminente partecipazione al 45° Festival di Monte Carlo in un contesto simile, con l’accompagnamento della musica dal vivo.

Martin Lacey presenta Bruno prima del suo numero A impreziosire il suo ingresso in pista la presentazione affidata alle parole e alla voce di Martin Lacey, suo amico ma anche esempio e idolo, i cui consigli sono preziosi insegnamenti.

Bruno arriva al Krone Bau dopo un percorso di sei anni durante i quali, da zero ha creato il suo gruppo di tigri colorate e un numero che oggi manifesta notevole maturità e si configura come il lavoro con le tigri più interessante del mondo occidentale con trucchi inediti e di propria ideazione in cui fonde tecnica impeccabile, classe e tutta l’eleganza di casa Togni.

Solo 8 anni fa si esibiva nella pista del Krone Bau come giocoliere in bouncing e le tigri probabilmente non erano ancora entrate nei suoi orizzonti e obiettivi professionali. Poi la scintilla, la passione rovente per questo lavoro, una dedizione quotidiana a fianco al padre Flavio che gli ha trasmesso tutte le sue competenze che Bruno ha rielaborato nella creazione di un numero completamente nuovo. Poi il debutto ufficiale di Napoli nel 2017 nella pista del Circo Americano, poi i gala in Francia, l’elettrizzante esperienza a Mosca al Circus Nikulin per arrivare ai giorni di oggi.

Un percorso emozionante, per lui e per noi spettatori e sostenitori, orgogliosi dei traguardi internazionali di Bruno e della sua famiglia.
