Reminder that Miss Medda is loosely based off of Aida Overton Walker! African American Vaudeville performer that did a lot of work to help young black women get on the stage. She refused the stereotypical “mammy” role that was often placed upon black women and became a sensational star, even going on to perform in Buckingham palace for King Edvard VII.

~ The Newsies Celebrating Valentines Day ~

Jack and David:

For Jack and David, they paint together in Jack's "Penthouse in The Sky." Jack paints the skyline of the city, and David paints the moon and stars. They're mostly giggling the whole time because Jack is definitely not the one who keeps dotting David's cheek with the paintbrush.

Sarah and Katherine:

Planetarium date! Katherine has this booked weeks in advance to get into a talk about the galaxy from a proper astronomer. Sarah had her eyes glued to the projections, but Katherine had her eyes glued to the excitement in her girlfriend’s eyes the whole time.

Spot and Race:

Movie day! These two spend their day curled up and cuddling on the couch and watching their favourite films with popcorn and Fanta. Did they maybe watch Legally Blonde twice? Absolutely. Did they both start bawling during the Breakfast Club? Well that is between them and the now empty box of tissues.

Albert and Finch:

Bike ride around the park and bird watching! They rent two bikes and ride around for a bit before they find a bench in the park and do some birdwatching. Finch is a master at the game and teaches Albert everything he knows, but he eventually gives up and just ends up cuddling him on the bench and pointing out the birds himself and shows them to Albert instead.

Buttons and Elmer:

IKEA. Look, these two would pick the strangest fuckin dates and you know it. They spend their valentines strolling around IKEA like they're searching for furniture items for their dream house, but in reality, they only walk out with meatballs and matching alien plushies, but they have a great time goofing off together.

At the end of the night, all the couples and all the rest of the Newsies go to the Bowery to watch Miss Medda's special Valentines Day performance, where everybody, no matter their sexuality or gender, is welcome to have a good time.

i was rewatching newsies(1989) and i noticed so many things i never noticed before. i thought I would share it here since i dunno anyone else who would find this interesting

- the relationship between miss medda and racetrack. during the rally, in the movie. Racetrack and medda have such an amazing bond. You can see the way medda cares for racetrack in those scene when racetrack is getting hit. she yells and screams wanting it to end, specifically for racetrack.

- when Jack "switched sides." through the bribery. The only one who still had hope for jack was les. he trusted jack wouldnt stay on that side.

- i also love the more slowburn between sarah and jack. unlike katherine n jack in the broadway production. their relationship is more slow and has time to develop.

- David and jack had such an amazing bond. i know the broadway production portrayed this amazing as well. although the movie is my favorite. they spend more time together and david wants to save jack when he goes to the refuge. its such a beautiful scene when jack tells david not to help him escape. you can see the hurt in his eyes.

Some notes because that was a lot:

 I really wanted to cast Dr. Bunsen as Bunsen because ha ha funny, but I didn’t so you’re welcome. Toyed with the idea of the Delanceys being Statler and Waldorf or Bunsen and Beaker but neither were quite right. I also wanted to make everyone in Pulitzer’s office a member of Electric Mayhem but it just didn’t work out that way. 

Piggy Medda was simultaneously the easiest and hardest decision to make. I felt weird about her being in a mother role towards Kermit but Piggy wasn’t right as Katherine so I had to surrender Medda to her. 

during intermission Statler and Waldorf make comments like “Splasher? what is this? finding nemo?” and “Crutchie? More like cringey!”

Also I scribbled this in class when I first had the idea so Miss Piggy Medda

the rally in meddas theatre in the musical actually happened! it was held at irving hall instead of the bowery theatre, but it was in manhattan! several newsies made speeches, but the most notable ones were made by racetrack higgins, kid blink, and annie kelly!
