While we've never gotten a film adaptation of House of Leaves (and I hope we never do; some books should just stay as books), The Night House did some interesting experimentation with its setting in a way that it reminded me of HoL's structure.

However, what I really want to talk about is The Empty Man. Mostly about how miffed I am that this was given zero fanfare (which, understandable, given its subject matter) and how bad the title/promo poster is. Had I not been made aware of it by word of mouth, I probably never would have watched it due it standing out as much as The Bye Bye Man or whatever other crappy attempt at horror is being churned out lately.

What started off as a "this is what happens when white people appropriate shit they don't understand" turned into "what in the Lovecraft is this" which, technically, iykyk. I don't want to spoil it, but this was without a doubt one of the best cosmic horror flicks I have watched in a while.

My go-to cosmic horrors are usually films such as Event Horizon and Annihilation, stuff that leans heavy on the science fiction aspect of cosmic because a lot of movie people fail to grasp the meaning behind the genre. The Empty Man really tapped into the futility of the self versus the unknowable nature of the infinite cosmos and, my god, was I left feeling satisfyingly horrified by the implications of what had transpired. Some of the effects were a little goofy, but I definitely forgive it for giving me something along the lines of The Void.

Hey, it’s your college hockey anon again. Totally agree on the “doesn’t care” discourse being STUPID. I also saw someone after the lines switched saying that Mitch is too selfish?? Like in his playing. It said he tries to shoot too much. I’m not convinced that person has ever watched a Leafs game. That is the exact opposite of the actual problem. There’s like a stupid echo chamber where they just make up a narrative that is in no way supported by anything. Or when they say the team doesn’t like him. Have they heard any member of that team talk about him??

Anyway, my main point is that when I first got into cheering for the Leafs, I was looking through the NHL leaderboards and was shocked to see Mitch on several of them. The way people talk about him, you’d think he’s the worst on the team. And he’s third on the team for goals and points and second for assists. I’ll freely admit he’s having an off year so far! I’m not denying that. But if his version of a dry streak is being near the top of the entire NHL in multiple categories, that’s not a guy you wanna get rid of! That’s a guy you root for cause you know he’s capable of such incredible things once he gets out of his own head.

This is a great discussion and I really appreciate your perspective! In fact, I agree with it wholeheartedly ! Unfortunately I am laughing too much at the concept of Mitch being overly shooty to form a proper response
