One learns, one doesn't

At the start of "Intuition", Gabriel ponders over his numerous failed attempts to defeat the heroes even with the power of the snake miraculous providing him numerous chances to change his tactics. Gabriel points out that no matter what he does, he is no match for Ladybugs "magical luck" helping her evade any and all dangers, and with the lucky charm constantly adapting, victory continues to stay by Ladybugs side no matter what changes he makes in one moment.

Gabriel genuinely believes Ladybug is only able to succeed because of her "magical luck" and her Lucky Charm, but in reality, this is far from the truth. While the lucky charm does provide its holder an item to help them achieve their goal, its power still remains as the power of creation, not luck. It's just as Cat Noir said back in "Determination", Ladybug's true power has never been in the objects her powers of creation provide her, its always been in HER figuring out how to use those objects. The Lucky Charm may help Ladybug achieve her goal by providing a hint to the solution she seeks, but it has always been her skills and her own personal abilities which have allowed her to make use of the lucky charm to find thee solution to the problem.

While Gabriel has grown to become overly reliant on the powers of the miraculous, Marinette has done the one thing Gabriel is often times unwilling to do as he remains distant and hidden, which is learn. Marinette is far from the girl who used to believe there was no solution to her problems, she has learned to harness her own personal skills and abilities and has learned from her mistakes and experiences as time went on, becoming better and better in trusting her own intuition to find a solution, with or without the Lucky Charm.

(Overtime, Marinette learns to trust her instincts, creating plans to stay one step ahead of the villains. In "Destruction", Marinette reveals she had already made a plan to protect her identity in the event Monarch ever got ahold of one of the kwamis)

Gabriel thinks Ladybug's luck is all magical, but its not, the luck has always been part of who Marinette is, and this luck continues to stay strong the more she is willing to take a chance to trust herself, her abilities and the people who are willing to help her and stay beside her along the way as she continues to fight for the greater good.

(No matter what strugglers she faces and no matter how close to defeat she is, Ladybug is never alone in her endeavors. So long as Cat Noir and her team stay beside her to help, defeat is not set in stone for her)

Gabriel might have taken all the miraculous in the miracle box near the end of season 4, but this change did not drag the heroes and the other holders down to the point of accepting defeat, no, they continued forward and learned to live life without the other miraculous.

Ladybug and Cat Noir learned to fight without the power of the other miraculous, and the former miraculous holders learned to find ways to help the heroes and Paris even without powers, forming the resistance and still being readily available to help the two heroes in whatever way they could.

Ladybug and the others, succeed because they as people have been willing to stand together and adapt to a situation, learning every step of the way. Gabriel on the other hand, is not as willing to do the same. If something doesn't work out, its because he believes he did not have enough power, if the heroes continue to win, its because they hold more power against him in more ways than one, and while he knows his attempts to continue using the snake miraculous have done him more harm than good as it has even sped up the cataclysm that is slowly inching him closer and closer to his demise, he does not stop.

Gabriel remains trapped, reliving the same mistakes again and again, refusing to move forward as he continues to find solace in bringing back the past life he once lived with Emelie. No matter what warning Nathalie gives him and no matter what cruel fate awaits Adrien, he will not stop, not as long as he can still give himself a second chance to take back what he lost.

(Nathalie becomes furious with Gabriel as he continues to willingly relive the same mistakes, refusing to learn that his actions have only made matters worse for them and Adrien)

Things I don't understand.

This post has spoilers for the Confrontation, Migration, Intuition and Representation episodes. Don't continue reading if for some reason you haven't watched them.

-Confrontation. Juleka's speech impediment.

Ummm... Since when? I thought she was an extremely introverted person. That's not the same as having speech impediment. I don't remember having seen her stuttering like this before. In Reflekdoll she struggled with expressing her emotions, not struggling with speaking. And if she has this problem, which is a serious thing, then why did Luka left her the responsibility of the band? One thing is to trust in someone, but when you have a problem like this then suddenly receiving such a responsibility will only make your problem worsen.

-Migration. Luka has to leave because he knows the identity of Chat Noir and Ladybug. Aren't we forgetting something?

No hate intended to Alya, but why didn't she leave too? I mean, Gabriel knows Ladybug trusted her with the Fox miraculous once, then pretended not to, but later he found she still was using it. And then she handed her the Ladybug miraculous. Doesn't that scream "she knows the secret"? Am i forgetting an episode where Hawk Moth tried to find Ladybug's identity through Alya? Like he tried to akumatize her to try to squeeze the truth out of her? Even if Alya only knows Ladybug's identity, that's still a huge risk. In Intuition, Gabriel supposedly couldn't win because he couldn't defeat the two of them. But if he learned the identity of Ladybug he could attack by surprise, leave Chat Noir alone and win.

-Confrontation. The magical shield. (Is this a tribute to Agent's of Shield? Reminds me a lot of Coulson's shield.)

I really don't understand this one. First because, isn't this like affecting Ladybug directly? Her yo-yo is now not that important since now anyone can purify an akuma. Happy thoughts and that's it. Second. Ladybug came up with the talismans and then Gabriel couldn't akumatize people. No more people for Gabriel to use his power on, so the writers patched that with the mega akuma. So, now what? He's gonna create super mega akumas that will be stronger than the shield? What's the point in all this? And how come nobody noticed the glowing before? She's been handing the talismans since season 4, right?

-Representation. Mega akumas in a jar? They can be contained by mere glass? Seriously?

Why didn't they tell people to simply lock themselves in a room and just not to touch the door or window so they wouldn't get akumatized?

-Representation/Gabriel Agreste/Risk. In Representation we saw Felix telling the story of his creation, but then back in season 4, the Gabriel Agreste episode, did he really need confirmation that Gabriel was Shadow Moth? I mean, all along he knew Gabriel had the Peacock miraculous. He knew Shadow Moth could create sentimonsters, so... Also, i wonder if they changed something in the backstory. I mean, Felix's reaction when he saw Emily was kind of weird, wasn't it?

Finding out the body of someone you thought death would definitely be a shock, but he was terrified of her. Why? His father created him. His father was the abusive person in his daily life, so i don't get why he'd be so terrified of Emily.

MLB sophomore slump and regression fallacy

Okay, let's get one thing clear I'm a baseball fan: But sabermetrics can be really interesting for anyone that loves analyzing data

(We are not going through the codes behind  this experiment, the goal is to understand the intuition first). 

In the Major League Baseball (MLB), the rookie of the year or (ROY) is given for the first-year player with the best performance in the league. But according to an article published in 2015 by Fox Sports, sophomore players have worst performances compared to their rookie seasons.  The data shows a pattern of the sophomore slump in performance. But can we trust these patterns?

Using the Lahman library in R-Studio in the analysis, we focused on the batting averages from the players, filtering the pitchers (since they don't receive awards for batting). With the spread function we created a column for rookies and sophomores batting averages.

Long coding short, we analyzed these stats and reached this scatterplot that shows that there's no sophomore slump. The correlation during their two separate years (2013-2014) is high but not perfect.  Like your statistics instructor might have repeated over and over again, correlation does not imply causation.

It wasn't about the miraculous.

Near the end of "Strike Back" when Cat Noir promised he and Ladybug would take back all the miraculous Monarch took from the miracle box, we knew it was only a matter of time before our two heroes would get their chance.

However, simply taking them all back would be no easy fit as Monarch had become unpredictable. They didn't know which miraculous he would use, what he would do next, let alone know the kind of boundaries he was willing to break now that he had so much power on his side. 

But out of all the moments Ladybug and Cat Noir came close to retrieving the miraculous(more on this later), there was one moment in particular which raised question, I am of course talking about the moment in "Intuition", when Cat Noir succeeded in grabbing Monarch's hand through the portal, and yet despite knowing the miraculous were in his reach, he did not take them, instead, he chose to activate the power of second chance.

Cat Noir could have taken the miraculous, but he didn't, not because he couldn't, but because in a moment of weakness, Cat Noir realized he could obtain something he couldn't before, revenge. This one moment when Cat Noir finally got a hold of Monarch, was not about the miraculous, it was about Nathalie.

Cat Noir has always felt a great deal of disappointment in knowing Monarch would target innocent people for his plans, but during the events of "Passion", a line was crossed. After losing his mother, Adrien had developed a new bond with Nathalie, viewing her as his new mother figure, but to see her grow just as sickly as he remembered his mother being, left him fearful of her potentially facing the same fate as his mom.

The fear of something potentially happening to Nathalie continued to plague Adrien's mind, so much that Marinette noticed immediately when he arrived to school.

And so, when he found out Monarch akumatized Nathalie in her sickly state, he wasn't just upset, he was furious. Granted, Nathalie was akumatized of her own free will, but Cat Noir does not know this. And although we have seen Nathalie be akumatized in private, as Catalyst, it wasn't until "Passion" that Ladybug and Cat Noir finally faced her as Safari, making the moment all the more impactful and tragic for Adrien as he was left no other choice but to fight Nathalie in order to save her, and just as tragic for Nathalie as Adrien remains unaware that she only agreed to be akumatized so she could save him from an orphaned life.

After Nathalie was de-akumatized, Cat Noir could no longer view Monarchs actions as the actions of a villain, he saw him as a monster for targeting someone like Nathalie. He already lost his mom, he couldn't bare losing Nathalie to, let alone disregard anyone who would dare endanger her.

(Adrien develops a new hatred for Monarch after he akumatized a sickly Nathalie, vowing to make Monarch pay for what he had done.)

As a result, in “Intuition”, when Cat Noir finally came face to face with Monarch all the way out in space and saw the snake miraculous before his very eyes, he thought about what Monarch did to Nathalie back in "Passion", but most of all, he thought about just what the power of the snake miraculous was subjecting Monarch to. Monarch may have the majority of the miraculous, but Cat Noir knew that if he was using the power of second chance for his own self interest, then this could only mean he had now trapped himself in a cycle of failure, one Cat Noir knew all too well when he tried to use the snake miraculous for his own self interest back in "Desperada".

In "Desperada", despite Plagg's warning, Adrien attempted to use the power of the snake miraculous so he could impress Ladybug as Aspik. This of course ended terribly as all his plans ended in Ladybug being captured by Desperada, every single time. Monarch explained that when the second chance is activated, time rewinds for everyone, except the holder of the snake miraculous, the holder remembers everything that happened from all those repeated moments, and that is exactly what happened to Adrien during his time as Aspik.

Adrien remembered every moment he saw Ladybug be captured by Desperada, he remembered the unbearable frustration of watching his plans fall apart no matter how many things he tried to change, he remembered the unyielding dependence he had on the snake miraculous to continue giving himself a second chance, to try again and somehow get things to go the way he wanted, simply because he had the power to do so. But most of all, Adrien understood the crushing sense of failure he faced all 25,913 times he used the power of second chance.

(After months of failed attempts, Adrien stops using the power of second chance, devastated as he realizes he cannot save Ladybug, no matter what he does differently)

When Cat Noir saw Monarch using the power of second chance, he wanted him to experience that same crushing failure again and again, all so he could finally make Monarch pay for what he did to Nathalie.

(After nothing but failed attempts, Monarch stops using the power of second chance, his body no longer able to withstand the strain of the cataclysm spreading through his body, even more than it has before)

Unfortunately, Cat Noir is unaware of the fact that his cataclysm is currently killing his father, worst of all, he doesn't know that the power of second chance was speeding up the effects of the cataclysm, inching Gabriel closer and closer to his demise. In other words, Adrien has no idea that his attempts at revenge, had also unintentionally aided in shortening the time his father had left to live.

Changes That Madden Needs to Make to Fix its Franchise Mode

#FixMaddenFranchise has been trending since last week on Twitter and for the last several years in the fans’ minds. The NFL is the most popular sporting league in America, and people take anything to do with the prestigious association, very seriously. So, it isn’t surprising when amidst a global pandemic, racially unstable society, and the highest unemployment rate in ‘forever,’ we are concerned about fixing a video game.

Dark jokes apart, it is high time that the makers of this game take things seriously. After 2013, and fans concur on this, the game has been a below-average effort on the developers’ part. It is like they wait until the very last day to work on it and then do the most basic job possible to clear sales and increase profits. Although, it might be becoming counter-intuitive since the rebellion has started among fans, and they aren’t happy at all.

A “new version” is out, and fans aren’t buying it!

Okay, we might ‘buy’ the game because we love to hate it, but we aren’t buying the whole “new version” part. The improvements and updates are nothing but patch fixes and would have quickly been done to Madden’20 itself. The sales that are happening are because of the other modes such as Madden Ultimate Team and Knockout superstar. But the bread and butter of Madden is its franchise mode. And the makers couldn’t stand a chance at success from here on now if they do not lend an ear to the fans.

Making Madden a money-making machine

There’s so much focus on Online mode and not so much on the offline one because the makers can make money from microtransactions in the online mode. The franchise mode, which fans adore, has remained untouched in seven years, and it’s time to make significant amendments. So while the people don’t mind anybody profiting, they want to pay for a product that they deserve.

Here are some changes that EA Sports should look into, to make Madden a better place for everyone:

Give us back the Training camp

In 2004, a minicamp mode was released¬— drills as per the player’s position to improve them as they head into the regular season. Training camp provided for a fun way to prepare your players for the regular season, where an unready body costs teams. Fans stayed up all night to get gold in these drills, but after 2013, we never saw the exercises again. We have to have something like a training camp to get out ahead in the season. Currently, there are only four-pre-season games, which everybody simulates. So, a training camp will be a welcome addition.

Revamp the drafting & scouting

Scouting and Drafting are crucial areas for football, which affect the whole season. Since the name of the mode is ‘franchise mode,’ we ought to have some semblance of being able to build one up correctly. In the current drafting situation, it is either round one or bust. Fans are tired of complaining about this and not getting anywhere with it. The rest of the rounds don’t carry any surprises or respectable talent, which does nothing but create an unrealistic vibe for the game. Since the NFL is famous for having gems come out from the later rounds like Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (Round 4) or the GOAT Tom Brady (Round 6). The drafting process has remained unchanged in almost ten years, and there’s just no way it hasn’t reached EA Sports yet.

Where’s the depth, EA?

MLB, NFL, and NBA are the top three sports leagues. And in real life, the NFL is at the top in all aspects of the country. But virtually, the amount of success enjoyed by NFL’s virtual counterpart stands nowhere close. The versions of Madden released after 2013 don’t seem like the work of a behemoth company like EA. The player’s information, news updates, and locker room chatter all play a role in building and succeeding as a franchise. And Madden doesn’t give us anything properly. No proper scouting, no in-depth player analysis, and you aren’t even privy to the national news (only the local ones).

Customize everything!

If you look at the franchise mode of NBA2K, Madden’s foremost foe, you’ll find everything you want Madden to be. The draft classes date back to the 1960s (when the NBA wasn’t even that great), so you can re-play history. They create expanded records and track everything. You can trade draft picks from the past five years on your team for additional transfer cache, there’s in-depth scouting, and even the off-season has been made attractive.

And we haven’t even discussed customization yet. NBA2K allows you to create a fully customizable team. You can move them anywhere and have a mascot with the name of your choice. While Madden has relocation too, but it is restrictive, and you can’t even name your team or select a city of your choice (you’ve to choose from the list). Even MLB has gotten this feature in their game.

But Madden wasn’t always this disappointing; long-term fans remember how amazing the gameplay and player analysis used to be. There were national news reports and detailed player profiles. Maybe, they just got lazy and stopped brainstorming for new ideas. It is time to get back on the drawing board EA.

Probability is something that interests me – one specific example is in sports. And one particular feat that is out of the ordinary recently was the Cleveland Indian’s 22 game win streak, which ended on Friday when Cleveland lost to Kansas City. Cleveland’s win streak was nothing short of one of the most impressive winning streaks in all of MLB history. But what is the probability of something like this occurring? The following article marks it as low as 1 in 65,000:

How did this number come about? The winning streaks in the past were compared to one another, and simulations were run to determine the odds of a team winning a game. On top of this, you have to consider other factors, such as the rotation size and era. For example, the New York Giants in 1916 won 26 games, but there were differences in the era of 1916 versus 100 years later. In theory, there is more parity today and also a five man rotation for pitcher, instead of a four man rotation, which also needs to be considered when making calculations. Because calculations are involved, this should be considered empirical probability, because you do have past information of games played that can be used to help determine the probability of the event that has occurred. So, when can a feat like this be accomplished again? It shouldn’t be for a while. The most recent winning streak before Cleveland’s was a 20 game win streak by the Oakland Athletics in 2002, but before that, there were no winning streaks 20 games or over in recent years. Given the data, Cleveland may have done something we may not see again in a long time – the article below gives an in-depth analysis filled with past data, and compares it to the 26 game run from the New York Giants 100 years earlier:

Ultimately, the author deems Cleveland’s accomplishment the greater one, even though they won fewer games. As the article points out, another big factor to consider, probability aside, is the caliber of play: 100 years ago, players were paid a lot less, and some had to choose other careers to make a living. Also, those of mixed races were not allowed to play yet, further watering down talent. So now, on top of the empirical probability provided by previous statistics, you need more to make a the best possible conclusion on the information given; thus, intuition and understanding of baseball then versus now are also considered. Given empirical probability only, one would label the 1916 New York Giants’s run more impressive; but with context to the data given, many analysts put the Cleveland Indians on top, marking their winning streak as the best in MLB history. It’s quite fascinating that history was made, and we may never see a winning streak like this again for a very long time. I’m not too into baseball, but a story like this still caught my eye. Given the odds, we shouldn’t expect to see another winning streak of this magnitude. But humans have accomplished many great feats, so maybe a team will defy the odds and we can witness history yet again soon.
