Scrap Sketchbook - Jan. '24 / week 4

Now realizing I've been drawing everyone facing to the left / their right

Top images are for a fanon document. (I know, a fanon doc for a character not even released in their own game yet...)

Rat person that was supposed to look like it's clawing its face in anguish, not bashful? lol. This week I felt like I had a sudden dip in drawing skills & motivation, which kinda bummed me out. I colored in another digital doodle sitting on my PC from last year (3rd image) while I was fighting through that.

Best of Scrap Sketchbook for week 3 of January

There was nothing for week 2 (except I swatched Ohuhu markers on a page) because returning to work stressed me out.

The lullaby art is from older sketch and doodle files - the new thing I did was coloring on those.

Best of Scrap Sketchbook, first week of January 2024

I'm gonna try to loosen some invisible rules I've noticed putting on myself that weren't needed, such as never counting the digital doodles I do sometimes. That's the first page. (Except the two on the bottom left - those are brush pen traditional.)

The second page was playing around with an existing open species (I added the description notes on there.) I don't necessarily want a pinestripe poker to be a possible main 'sona, but I figured it was a good practicing "scaffold" of sorts as I want to actually make a 'sona some day, even if I have to be indecisive and make multiple at first.

2023 Summary of Art I was mentally ready to put "404 not found" jokes on this, but I managed to find something for every month. Even if it was just a sketch. I can barely believe it. This is the first time since high school I could even think of completing one of these end-of-the-year art things.

Eternally thankful for the various online artist communities, especially for Hylics & Flipside, for providing me the inspirational fuel at many points in time. I hope to do just as good if not better next year.

I fell off using my scrap sketchbook as a daily habit for the past several months, but I want to restart again.

For now, here are some sketches from 3/1 to 11/30/23. I still sketched in it sometimes. This was usually in the car during work breaks or on weekends, to be honest.

There was a lighter & darker version I was struggling to find balance between, while also not fully understanding the collab's color palette instructions. 😅 Once I did, the color harmony fell into place.

Some behind the scenes: brainstorming design, studying a glowstick reflected on red plastilina clay, including color studying it in ibis paint from life instead of trusting the photo.

Oddly I still had to combine some imagination with what I observed, to make it more appealing in the end.

Hylictober 2023 Prompt 5: Twins / Envy / (Creation)

The tenacious Poolman thief envies the true crown of Odozeir's factories, earned through favor.

The loyal Poolmagne envies the freedom of the paper crown, stolen from the world's most esteemed archaeologists, earned through cunning.

(Yes, I skipped prompts 2-4. After acknowledging I'm probably not getting to every prompt on time before the end of the month, I'm gonna focus on the ones I had the most fun ideas for. I want to try to do at least one more, probably from prompt 6?)

Here are what I believe are the last of my finished minis, painted around 2010-2012, from the dystopian comedy pen and paper RPG, Paranoia (XP).

I'm still proud of these, because I was challenged to paint human flesh and faces. Before, I only had painted fantasy monsters and beings.

For anyone not familiar with but wondering about the Paranoia RPG, I'll summarize under the read more:

The last remaining humans live underground in "Alpha Complex" which is ruled by Friend Computer (who is a perfect infallible AI with no problems. At all. Totally.) Society is a rainbow-color based caste system with Infrared (Black) & Red being the lowest, and Violet & Ultraviolet (White) being the highest.

Unfortunately, there are Traitor Scum to Friend Computer, such as secret societies and mutants running around and breaking everything. (Hint: ALL players must roll a secret society and mutant power upon character creation. ;D ) So, Friend Computer assigns the players to become Troubleshooters who must solve impossible problems while obeying all the rules and doing it all with a smile on your face. If Friend Computer doesn't think you're happy or loyal enough, you may need a "brain scrub", and Traitors will get vaporized.

It's a chaotic setting full of frequent comedic deaths and backstabbing, but it's expected from the start, and everyone gets six clones to die through.

I played a member of the secret society Death Leopard ("metal head punks" who think that means doing Jackass-level dangerous stunts whenever possible) and my mutant power was the ability to eat all matter (good for destroying evidence). I had a lot of fun doing stupid shit for secret society points while narrowly avoiding getting caught. I forgot what my Troubleshooter role was (cleaner/scrubber?)

Finally finished the fan art that my profile picture is from!

I'm developing the head canon that Lullaby is part plant, and able heal Flesh (and/or Will?) from resting in a "Buried" status. The serpentine limb reminds me of both velvet worms and vegetable taproots, so I want to think that limb can serve both functions.

Last week, I got a chance to do what's called an Acrylic Pour Paint on canvas. There were more colors available, but I've been obsessed with Chromostereopsis lately and I wanted to see if I could invoke that effect randomly.

Fortunately, the canvases were small enough to fit in my scanner, which did a huge favor for the colors since they look way darker in person. (Especially the one on the left.)
