MOTORCOAT
Those of you who read this blog frequently are aware that I reserve a lot of praise for bands that, in my judgment, have their own unique sound, rather than just following the conventions of some genre. Nothing in rock music is truly unique, of course, but some bands are really easy to pigeon-hole, with a stable sound and two or three bands they draw on deeply for inspiration. That’s not a bad thing—I consider myself one of those artists, just trying to re-create the stuff I love. If someone compares my songwriting to Rivers Cuomo, or Daniel Johnston, then I’m living the dream. Motorcoat, on the other hand—I don’t know what the fuck Motorcoat is, but they are for damn sure very good at it. The closest they get to accepting a rock sub-genre is the statement that “communicate solely through channels of pure energy.” Take a listen to their debut EP “Dame Dynamite” and tell me if you can pigeon hole this. You could call it, I guess, jazz-funk-psych-rock, but it doesn’t recall any particular scene or band. Leadoff track “Harlem Dope King” kicks off with some anxious funk, before moving into a trippier second section, bassist-singer Alex Fulton, with his typical chant-like vocals, singing something about the ghetto. Track 2, “Storms in the Eyes” continues to hypnotize, with is keyboard loop and its waves-crashing guitar chords, before it suddenly explode into a monster rock section with lumbering fuzz bass and a gyrating, whammy-happy guitar solo, as drummer Matias Morel—probably the standout instrumentalist in a band with some serious chops—ratta-tatt-tatts a volcanic eruption from his kit. And the the song’s over. Track 3, “You’re Hear But You’re Over There”, swings wide like a big Foucault’s pendulum, stopping to breathe before launching back in with a wonderful tom run from Matias. The weird inhale-exhale structure of the song keeps you guessing, which is a general tendency of Motorcoat—just when you think you’ve got a sense of the song, they do, in Monty Python’s famous words, “something completely different”. Track 4, “Frosted Blues”, rips out some righteous blues-rock right out the gate, exploding out of a deceptively dreamy intro. I think it’s Matias on lead vocals on this track, his higher voice adding a weird Perry Farrell vibe to the proceedings. In the middle of the track they explode into a brief free jazz meltdown, falling apart and putting themselves back together again before you can barely blink. The song is already a fucking journey by the 3-and-a-half minute mark, mellowing out in a quiet breakdown before one last explosion of classic rock excess, octave-pedaled guitars straining towards the sky in blood-letting ecstacy. Track 5, “Blade Dance”, suggests a wide deserted expanse (as on the EP’s cover) with its “Riders on the Storm” intro, Matis’ rolling drums gathering on the horizon like black clouds, only to rip into a mosh-worthy punk section, and back to the desert and the storm, and then back to the mosh pit. The band looks great on stage, each member inhabiting his own universe, Alex with his left-handed bass and low-key charisma, guitarist Michael Vincent, with his almost preppy vibe and lack of vocal contributions, playing “the quiet one”, and Matias, with his cool haircut and hair-trigger energy, playing the role of the wild card. He’s especially fun to watch, probably one of my favorite drummers in town. If you like intelligent, dynamic, unpredictable, rippin’ rock music, you have to check out Motorcoat.
