Chapter 7: Here There Be Dragons

"WHAAAAAAAT!?" Izuku screeched. Not quirks? Monsters? Dragons? His dad?! Him!?

Jinafire-san put her hands on his shoulders and called for him to look at her. "Izuku, calm down. I need you to breathe. In for 5 and out for 3." She closed her eyes and exaggerated her breathing for him to follow.

Izuku rested his hands from where they were gripping his hair in his panic on his cousin's arms and shakily followed her breathing. He let out a deep breath and leaned away from Jinafire-san's hold when he regained control of his breathing. She let go of him and leaned back in her seat.

"Are you alright now, Izuku?" She asked with a gentle look.

"Ye-yeah...thanks." He responded, meeting her eyes and then looking away again. He hunched his shoulders and gripped the couch with his hands and a troubled expression on his face.

"Listen, I know that must have been shocking, but I do not 'beat around the bush', and wish to share with you the culture you have been missing out on. But, I also get that you may want nothing to do with this, and springing it on you when you've just arrived in another country is unfair, so you have another option." His cousin told him.

"Another option?" He asked with a tilt of his head, leaning forward in interest.

"You can leave. Go back to Japan. Confront your father about being a dragon or simply ignore him and this and never have to deal with the monster world again." Jinafire-san told him, pulling out an airplane ticket to return to Japan.

Izuku stared at her outstretched hand and thought deeply. He really couldn't believe it. His dad not being human, but a dragon… him also being half dragon...he's just Izuku, regular, plain, Midoriya Izuku!… regular, plain, quirkless,…Deku.

"I…" he began and Jinafire-san looked up in anticipation. "I want to learn about this world." He announced with a determined look in his eyes. "M-my world." Izuku added with a fragile confidence and a flush while ducking his head.

Jinafire-san met his resolve with her own assessing eyes and gave a small approving smile. "Very well then, let me tell you all about monsterkind…"

"Wow…" Izuku said in awe, staring at the ceiling and resting his head on the back of the couch. A whole monster world! Even a side of the internet only available to monsters and those with monster blood!

He heard a giggle beside him and turned to look at his cousin coming in from the kitchen area. She went to sit beside him and set cups of jasmine tea on the table before them.

"You look like you have steam coming out of your ears. Take a break from thinking, will you?" Jinafire-san said.

"Th-thank you…" he responded as he sat up and picked up a cup. He took a drink and twirled the cup in his hands a bit, careful not to spill the remaining tea, deep in thought.

"I said take a break from thinking, Izuku." Jinafire-san scolded lightly with a bemused smile.

"Ah! R-right,right,right." Izuku laughed awkwardly and used one hand to rub the back of his head in a nervous habit. "Sorry, Jinafire-san, it's just hard to turn my brain off y'know?"

"Don't call me 'san'. I'm your cousin, right? And we'll be spending a lot of time together in the dorms. Call me tangmei or just Jinafire." Jinafire-sa-, Jinafire informs him with crossed arms and a look that promised she wouldn't accept anything else. When he nodded his head yes, her face softened and she continued speaking. "It's alright, shushu told me you had a bright mind that never really stopped turning." She said with a teasing tilt to her voice.

Izuku flushed and hunched his shoulders in embarrassment but had a small smile on his face at the good natured teasing he's used to from his family.

"O-ok,...tangmei." He said hesitantly after a beat, which was worth it for the small smile sent his way.

"Well now," Jinafire said, standing up and gesturing for him to do so as well, "let's finally get you situated in the dorms, yes?" She nodded towards a hallway leading deeper into the dorm building.

He quickly stood up, stumbling a bit, but righting himself in time so he didn't fall on his face. He jogged quickly to catch up to Jinafire(curse his height!) and walked by her side. "Uh, s-so where are we going?" He asked as he sped up a bit to match Jinafire's long strides.

"We are going to meet the dorm mother, Ms. Kindergrübber. She is also the Home Ick teacher." She answered as she walked on to a more office-like looking part of the dorms.

"Home Ick? Ah, monster slang for, um, Home Ec right?" Izuku asked, seeing if he remembered the slang rules from the information overload earlier. Wait, should he refer to himself as a manster/monster or normie?

Jinafire interrupted his inner tirade before it could really get started. "Yes, here we are." She answered as she came to a stop at a door with a plaque reading Dorm Monster.

Izuku barely had any time to hype himself up for his first meeting with an adult monster(who doubles as an authority figure!!!) when his cousin gave a quick knock and opened the door. She didn't even wait for a response! Maybe this is a good sign…?

"Oh, Jinafire! Is this the cousin we've been expecting? Come in, come in, let me get a good look at you." A grandmotherly, German accented voice called out.

He took a deep breath and stepped further into the office and around his cousin to stand in front of…the monster? She looked very human, hm, well she does look a bit like a stereotypical witch of fairytale with the mole and dress but without the green skin, wait, but no, that's rude, right? But the plaque said 'Dorm Monster' so-

"Ohoho, my, a chatterbox are you? Smart too, got it in one! I am in fact a witch. But enough about that, let's get this meeting overway shall we?" The Dorm Matron cut in with a smile.

"Ah! Oh, I'm sorry, did I say that outloud? S-sorry if I sounded rude! I really didn't mean to, it's, uh, it's just all monsters I've met so far, which hasn't been many actually! I just, I-" Izuku tried to apologize with panicking gestures.

"Oh, now lad none of that! A bit nervous, are we? Take a deep breath there." She interrupted again with a small laugh. Izuku took a breath and she continued. "Now then, I am Ms. Kindergrübber, Home Ick Teacher and Dorm Monster of the Monster High Dorms."

"I-Izuku Midoriya." He greeted with a bow and then jerked himself up and jutted out his hand for the American greeting. "S-sorry."

Ms. Kindergrübber just gave a kind laugh and took his hand. "That's quite alright, Monster High gets quite a bit of exchange students so I'm used to foreign greetings." She let go and gestured to the seats in front of her. "Now then, dearies, take a seat so we can go over things, hm?"

Izuku and Jinafire sat down, him sitting stiffly and stressed with Jinafire calm and collected. Ms. Kindergrübber gave them a smile before pulling out some documents.

"Now then, I'm sure you're aware your father filled in the forms for you settling in here, but, I just want you to make sure you've gone over everything now." Ms.Kindergrübber said as she handed over the documents to Izuku.

Izuku skimmed through the documents to double check and after confirmation handed them back to her. "Alright, good, good!" Ms. Kindergrübber said with a smile. "Now, onto some basic rules to keep in mind for your stay here, they can be found in the rulebook provided in your room if you ever forget. First off: lights out at 10 o'clock, second: room inspections once a week, third: all dorm students take turns cleaning the bathrooms in duos or trios, but since you're new, you can wait a week before signing up, furthermore, the whole dorm cleans the hallways everyother weekend with the kitchen and commonroom biweekly, fourth: if a monster of the opposite sex is in your room, lights off and door open please! Fifth: stay away from Room 13, and the hauntway that Room 13 is in on Fridays the 13th, Halloween, and September 9th. Sixth: Avoid Room 18, we think the school's kraken has taken that for a room since we see her tentacles come out to snatch up unsuspecting students sometimes." The grandmotherly Dorm Monster listed off.

"Whuh-What was that last one?" Izuku asked with a voice pitched high in fear.

"Like I said before, if you forget anything, there's a rulebook provided in every room. Now on you go! It's late and you need rest, bye-bye!" Ms. Kindergrübber cheered as Jinafire stood up and started leading Izuku away.

"Ah, w-wait, hold on-" Izuku tried to protest as he was led out of the office and into the hallways leading to the student rooms. "Jina-t-tangmei she-she was joking, right? There's no school kraken…right?" He asked nervously as he followed Jinafire to what he assumed to be his room.

"There is, don't worry, she probably won't pick on you. She likes to pick on one boy, Draculaura thinks they're going out, he's some sort of goblin, you look nothing like him and if you stay away from her haunts you're sure to be safe." Jinafire answered, which caused Izuku to give a weak, disbelieving 'what' in reply. "Here we are. Room 9, and your roommate is Salvatore Pantano, also starting school in September."

Izuku stiffened up and gripped the ends of his hoodie. "Is, um, is he already here?" He asked nervously. He knew what he was getting into signing up for a roommate and all, he spent days, DAYS!!! Thinking about whether he wanted one or not, a whole 'nother person he'd be living with in close quarters for three whole years!!! But! He's still allowed to feel nervous, and lowkey kinda scared, about meeting them!

"No, most dorm students come in during August, the last month before school starts." Jinafire answered, opening the door to the bare bones room. "Ah, good. Looks like the ghouls did bring your stuff to the right room. Well, I'll leave you to settle in and fetch you for breakfast tomorrow."

Izuku walked in and walked to the half of the room with his things. He turned back to his cousin as she finished speaking and gave a quick bow. "Um! Ah, th-thanks for everything, Ji-tangmei! See you tomorrow!" He said.

"See you tomorrow, Izuku." Jinafire said with a small smile, closing the door.

Izuku plopped onto his bed with a weary sigh. He clasped his hands together and stared at the ceiling for a bit before collapsing backward onto the bed as the last of his energy left him. "Ugh. This was an… Eventful™ day." He covered his face with his hands. "Mgh, OK, Izuku you're doing great. You met your cousin and looked to be getting along, you found out about monsterkind, which is a pretty big deal but you have several months to digest that, you'll be starting Junior High in a few months…" Izuku paused in his tirade to roll over and scream into a pillow. After having his mini-freakout, he rested his head on the pillow.

"One at a time, one at a time… make your problems bite-sized…" Izuku muttered to himself as he sat up. "Ok, unpacking first." He got up off the bed and opened his Present Mic™ suitcase to grab his clothes. "Alright, plan of attack. Dresser provided, shower down the hall on the right. So, I'll put my clothes away, set aside sleeping clothes and toiletries, get ready for bed and sleep!" He planned. "Alright! Let's do this!"

Izuku packed away his clothes into the dresser by his bed. His empty suitcases and backpack were put into the closet and his backpack's contents were organized in the desk provided on his side of the room.

He finished his nightly ritual and flopped back into bed, this time under the covers. "Alright, a new day, in a new country…and technically a new world. Plus Ultra Izuku!" Izuku gave himself one last pep talk before he finally fell asleep.
