Take Me Home Part 1 (Hybrid!Yoongi x Reader)

Summary: You found a white tiger - a really rare breed hybrid - in the backyard of your workplace hiding in a cardboard box from the outside world. Knowing that it would rain soon and the nights were getting colder you decided to take him home with you.

A/N: I’m currently absolutely in love with hybrid au stories so I thought why not make a Yoongi hybrid au one shot.

Today has been a busy day at the supermarket. Our supplier had just send us a big load of food this morning that had to be sorted into the different shelves around the shop. A lot of customers went shopping for groceries today since tomorrow was Sunday and the shops would all be closed. It was now after closing hours and I was organizing our stock. I said goodbye to the co-worker staying in with me as he took off to go home while I stayed to take out the trash and check everything again before going home myself. As I walked out the back I already heard something weird coming from the containers. I threw away the garbage and then looked to where I had heard the noises. Between the two containers stood a cardboard box that was slightly opened. It was rather big and as I was about to go back in I noticed it move. Just after that a tip of a tail was seen hanging out the box carelessly. Was there a cat inside? But the tail looked rather big compared to a cat ones. I stepped closer and cautiously grabbed the lid of the carton and slowly opened it to look inside. Just as I could looked inside I got hissed at. Wait? So there really was a cat inside. But that cat was really big. I took another look inside to realize that this was not a cat but a hybrid. He looked scared and kept hissing at me as I got closer again.

“Hey. I’m not going to hurt you. I just want to know how you got here”, I spoke quietly so I wouldn’t scare him ever more.

He turned his head towards me and scooted closer to the back corner of the cardboard box. Now that I saw him better I understood why he was so afraid. The color of his fur and the shape of his ears revealed that he was a rare breed. His fur was black and white striped and it looked a bit dirty just like the rest of him. This poor white tiger must have stayed on the street for quite some time. I stepped back from the box. I needed to somehow gain his trust so I could lure him out of this box and get him somewhere warm and safe. You never knew what kind of people were lingering outside and would love to find such a rare breed and try to make money of him. I didn’t even want to think about what such people would do to him. I decided to search for something I could bring him like food or some new clothes. I walked back into the supermarket and searched through our stock. I still had some leftover bread from today that I would usually take home with me since we would have to toss it into the trash. I took some fruits and then looked through our clothes sections. The boy outside looked pretty slim build so I chose some smaller clothes. I took whatever I could find and left the corresponding money for the things in the cash box which I then locked in our safe. After I had found everything, I packed it into a plastic bag and walked back outside. The tiger was still sitting in the box as I arrived there. I dropped the bag in front of the box and stepped back a bit.

“I brought you something to eat and some clean clothes to wear. You should find some shelter for the night. It looks like it’s going to rain soon”, I whispered and watched the box move a bit.

I waited for some time to see if he would grab the bag and eat something. It took some time until he peaked over the box to see if I was still there. He looked around before he grabbed the bag and instantly disappeared into the box again. The arm he had extended to take the bag had some bruises and cuts on it. Seemed like this hybrid already had a hard time on the street. I stepped closer again to see that he was happily munching on the bread and fruits I had chosen for him. Now that I could take a better look at him I saw that not only his arms were hurt but he had some cuts along his neck and cheeks too.

“You are hurt. Someone should look at your wounds. They might be infected”, I said quietly and saw him suddenly look at me.

“No. Please don’t”, he pleaded, his soft voice instantly touching my heart.

“Then at least let me get you somewhere safe. You shouldn’t stay here”

“No. I will stay here”

He looked at me with fear in his eyes. Something must have happened to him that he insisted on staying here. I crouched down and scooted closer to the box. He seemed curious too since he scooted closer towards me so that just the cardboard box was separating us. He sniffed the air and looked at me with his curious eyes. He still didn’t seem to trust me in any way but at least I was making some progress with him. A shelter didn’t seem like a good idea since he might have had bad experiences with that. Letting him stay here was even worse since the nights where getting colder and I didn’t really want a hybrid to freeze to death in the backyard of my workplace. The only other option was taking him home with me but I was sure that he would refuse. Well, I should at least try my luck.

“I know somewhere warm and safe where you could stay for some time if you’d like. My home is not really big but I have a guest room that you could have for yourself”, I suggested and saw his eyes open wide.

I wasn’t sure if he was thinking about if I was suspicious or if he was just thoroughly thinking about accepting or rejecting my offer. He then stood up and grabbed the plastic bag. Now that he was standing in front of me I just realized how tall he was. He was a bit taller than me but didn’t really look intimidating because of his small and thin body.

“Just because I’m coming with you doesn’t mean I trust you. I’ll watch you, human”, he said with a serious look and stepped out of the box.

“Understood. Now come with me. I’ll still have to close the store but then we can get you home.”

“Whatever”

That boy had an attitude. We walked into the backdoor, I locked it and then walked to the lockers to grab my stuff. The tiger followed me like a lost puppy. He offered to help we with my stuff as we walked to the front of the supermarket. We walked outside and locked the front door. I then walked to the parking lot, the tiger following me quickly. I took out my car keys and opened the trunk of the car. We stored my stuff there before closing it again. I walked to the driver seat and watched the tiger take his seat in the back of the car. As I sat down I turned around to look at him.

“You can sit in the front if you’d like”, I said and saw his head tilt to the side surprised.

He looked at me with confusion written all over his face before he left the car again and took his seat beside me. I smiled at his behavior and waited for him to put on his seatbelt before I turned on the engine and drove us home. Arriving at the garage I parked the car and then stepped out. I fetched the stuff from the trunk and waited for the hybrid to leave the car. After he walked over to me, I locked the car and walked towards the elevator. He followed me and stood next to me in the little cabin. I pressed the button to the third floor and watched the doors close. As we arrived on our floor we walked to the apartment and I opened the door.

“Go on. It’s a little messy but it’s warm.”, I said as he still stood at the door even thought it was open.

He walked in looking at his surrounding carefully. We took off our shoes and I went to stand at the side of the corridor watching him while he wandered around. He walked around the apartment and took in everything with big eyes. As he arrived at the guest room I joined him.

“I hope this room is ok for you. It’s usually empty since I don’t have many guests over. If you need anything you can just tell me. I’ll try to make it as comfortable for you as possible.”, I explained as he walked around the room.

“It’s fine”, he said and then came back to stand next to me.

“Do you want to take a shower? I can show you where the bathroom is”

The hybrid nodded and then followed me to the just mentioned room. I gave him a towel and some other showering utensils and then left him alone. In the meantime, I changed into something comfortable and took a seat on the couch in the living room to watch TV. It took some time before I heard the door to the bathroom open and saw him walk into the living room in the clothes I bought him from the supermarket and still wet hair.

“You should dry your hair. I don’t want you to get sick”, I said as he sat down next to me.

“Too lazy”, he answered and leaned back.

I rolled my eyes and walked to the bathroom to get a towel so I could at least dry his hair a bit if he let me. As I came back he looked annoyed as he saw the towel in my hands.

“I’ll leave you alone if you let me dry your hair. Is that a deal?”, I asked and sat down on the couch.

“Fine”, he mumbled and sat down on the floor in front of me.

I cautiously began to dry his hair. I had to make sure that I wouldn’t accidently hurt his sensitive ears so I tried to avoid them most of the time. After I was done I put the towel down and tapped his shoulder.

“I’m done. You can go and do whatever you like. If you need anything you can find me in my room”

I stood up from my position and left the living room. On my way back to my bedroom I stopped in the bath to hang the towel so it could dry. I then walked to my room and sat down on my bed. After scrolling through any social media app I could find on my phone, I grabbed my headphones and laid down. I put on some of my favorite music and turned off the lights. I loved to listen to music before I go to sleep. It always makes me calm and sleepy after some time. As I was about to put my phone and headphones away I noticed the door open slightly. I sat back up and turned on the light. A sleepy white tiger looked at me with his pillow in his arms.

“What’s wrong?”, I asked concerned.

“I can’t sleep”, he mumbled looking down at his feet.

As he looked up, a smile formed on my lips and he began to speak again.

“Don’t say a word. Just because I came to sleep here doesn’t mean that I accept you”, he said and closed the door behind him before he walked towards the bed.

His words somehow hurt me a bit. I decided to take him in and he was still this ungrateful.

“Understood. The same goes for me. Just because I let you stay in my apartment doesn’t mean that I care about you.”

I could have sworn that I saw him sulk for a second as these words left my lips. He climbed onto the bed and laid down next to me, but far enough so there would still be space between us. I somehow noticed that he seemed a bit sad after what I said. I didn’t mean to hurt him. I just wanted him to get a taste of his own medicine.

“I’m just kidding. I took you in since you looked hurt, exhausted and scared. I couldn’t let a hybrid, that looks like he suffered a lot, stay out there in the cold. I would feel terrible.”

After he didn’t react, I continued my monologue.

“You know…I could have just left you there, but I didn’t. I’m not asking you to thank me a thousand times or that you accept me right away and I understand if you don’t feel like talking a lot but knowing at least your name would probably make this a lot less awkward for the both of us.”

“Yoongi”, he whispered.

“What?”

“My name is Yoongi”, he said this time a bit louder and turned around so he could look at me.

“I’m Y/N. I hope we can get along in the future”, I introduced myself and smiled at him.

He tried to smile back but it looked a bit forced. Yoongi then yawned and I turned off the light and laid down.

“You should sleep now. Tomorrow is another day. We can get to know each other better then”, I said and turned so I was laying with my face towards him.

I noticed him moving around after some time. I opened my eyes and watched as he slowly scooted closer until he was laying directly in front of me. He noticed that I was still awake.

“Just because I-“

“I know. Just because you want to cuddle doesn’t mean that you accept me”, I finished his sentence and was surprised as he shook his head.

“No. I actually wanted to say just because I don’t know if I can fully trust you yet doesn’t mean that I don’t want to cuddle”, he said and I noticed a slight shimmer of pink on his cheeks as the moonlight shone onto his face.

“Oh”

I was surprised by his honest answer. I didn’t know that he would answer this directly. He kept looking at me as if he was waiting for something. I slowly understood what he wanted.

“Come here”, I whispered and opened my arms for him.

Yoongis eyes lit up. He scooted as close as possible and shyly wrapped his arms around my waist. I pulled him into my arms and wrapped them cautiously around his body.

“Is this comfortable for you?”, I asked and looked at the blushing tiger in my arms.

“Yes”, he whispered and hid his face in the crook of my neck.

I smiled at his behavior. I felt his tail flicking around excitedly under the blanket and giggled quietly. It was cute how he tried to play the tough one on the outside when he seemed to be a softy on the inside.

“Good night, Yoongi”, I whispered unsure if he was already sleeping.

As I received no answer I knew he fell asleep already.

“Sleep tight my little tiger”

I closed my eyes and drifted into a dreamless sleep. It wasn’t even 2 hours later when I woke up again. Yoongi was whimpering quietly and held me tight. I turned my head to look at him just to see that he was still sleeping. I reached out to pet his head trying to calm him down a bit without waking him up. His whimpering continued and I decided to wake him from his nightmare. I softly shook him by his shoulder.

“Wake up”, I said loud enough so it should wake him.

He woke from his dream, panting and trying to get out of my grip. Yoongi seemed to be a bit disorientated right now so I kept him in place.

“Calm down, it’s just me. You’re safe here”, I whispered and softly pet his head.

He looked at me and I noticed his breath steadying again. Yoongi calmed down and quietly began to purr. Seeing him relax again made my worry fade away quickly and was replaced by pure adoration for this boy. He pressed his head against my hand and encouraged me to pet him more.

“Are you ok?”, I asked after some time.

“I’m ok. Thank you”, he whispered smiling at me.

His slightly sleepy smile was beautiful. He looked like a cute little muffin. My gaze wandered to his cute nose and I couldn’t help myself from poking it. Yoongi looked at me with puppy eyes and a bit confused.

“Don’t look at me like that”, I said and his face turned sad.

“I’m sorry”, he mumbled.

“No no no. I didn’t mean it like that. You look really cute with that look on your face”

His cheeks blushed and he hid his face again.

“Stop saying that”, he whined and pulled on my shirt like a stubborn child.

“Ok. Whatever you say, cutie”, I teased and received a hit against my shoulder.

I just laughed and pulled him closer. He tightened his grip around my waist and used me as his bodypillow for the rest of the night.

hi! i just read the fic 'clausura' on ao3 and i really liked the premise so could i request something with reg helping bertie through a panic attack in the bertie's blog verse? i've been having quite a few recently and i wish i had someone like reg to help me through them. thank you!!

Prompt (finally) filled! I hope you don’t mind Nonny, but I switched the script and had Bertie help Reg instead.

I try not to put too much real world strife into this series, but I think COVID-19 is too invasive to ignore. Wash your hands, follow medical advice, and keep calm and carry on. Also practice good mental self-care if you don’t have a household Wooster to do it for you!

‘Who was that Scottish chappie, Reg?’‘Bertram?’‘You know, the one who always banged on about schemes and gangs and aglets, or something.’It took me a moment to detangle the meaning of my beloved’s question.‘You may be referring to the poet Burns, and the oft-quoted excerpt of his poem “To A Mouse”:“The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley,an’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain, for promis’d joy!”’‘That’s it. Someone ought give him an editorial spot with The Independent.’‘I fear it would be a posthumous one, Bertram.’‘Oh. Shame, that.’

I suspect that Bertram was musing on the peculiar times that we curently find ourselves in: a land of toilet paper scarcity, face masks, and widespread uncertainty. He had just come home from a foraging trip through the local supermarkets. Though he looked somewhat the worse for wear, had scored a few bags of root vegetables, some bulk wet wipes, and a good four kilograms of cat litter. His Code of the Woosters had driven him to volunteer for the onerous task. I quickly moved to prepare a pot of his favoured Darjeeling.

My own onerous task for the day had been an earlier phone call to my mother, informing her that the intricate and expensive planning that we’d gone through for my wedding to Bertram would, for now, amount to naught. The immediate future was a grey fog, and no-one could say for sure when it would be safe to re-schedule the ceremony.‘Was Rani alright when you phoned?’ Bertram asked, casting an errant shred of packing foam from his hair, before scrubbing his hands raw under the kitchen tap.‘She bore up. She wishes to give the catering company a very stern phone call for their refusal to refund our deposit. But as she is currently so busy at the medical centre, I doubt she will find the time or energy.’'I imagine the old girl has her hands full with panicking tabloid readers, eh?’'Quite so, Bertram. She told me that more of her time has been spent counselling healthy young people with the sniffles, than administering to her truly vulnerable patients.’'Blackguards. May they all run out of loo roll!’'Indeed.’We then passed a more sedate afternoon over our laptops. Bertram meticulously tended to his famous blog, while I prepared some documents for a fastidious client, keen to protect her assets against the variable economic climate. The cats, who were quite pleased with our increased presence in the flat, snoozed together on the tabletop between us.As I rose for a second cup of tea, I considered their purring, languid forms. Not for the first time, I urged myself to maintain my my sangfroid. It was in unsettled times like this that my reputedly cool demeanour was truly put to the test. While I would not confess to being a total control freak, I do appreciate order and consistency a great deal. It is the environment in which I best flourish, and I confess that the mounting chaos around us had been persistenly pricking at my nerves.

As I poured the remaining tea, I recieved a phone call from an unknown number.'Hello, this is Reginald Jeeves.’'Good afternoon, Mr Jeeves, I’m calling from Bethnal Green Medical Centre. I understand that you are a co-worker of a Mrs Beatrice Akinyemi?’'Yes, she is a paralegal at my firm.’ I felt my insides begin to clench.'Have you been in contact with Mrs Akinyemi within the last fourteen days, sir?’'I saw her at the office just a few days ago.’'I am obliged to inform you that she has recently tested positive for COVID-19. Given your recent contact, you and your household will be obliged to self isolate for a minimum of fourteen days, and monitor the onset of any symptoms. Have you or any of your houshold members experienced a high fever or persistent coughing?’My words stuck in my throat, and my heartbeat accelerated.'Sir?’'Is Bea alright?’'She last reported some mild flu-like symptoms, but she is not currently in a critical condition. As she is not in a high-risk category, her prospects of a full recovery are good. Can you please confirm if you or any of your household have been experiencing related symptoms?’’…No.’'Are any of your household members over the age of sixty, or do they have a pre-existing autoimmune condition?’'Paul… he’s not in my household, he is my co-worker. He and his husband are-’'We will be contacting Mr Seppings, to advise him of this development.’'Thank you.’'Should you develop any symptoms, your household will need to remain in self-isolation for a further fourteen days. Please refer to the NHS website to keep up to date with any developments. And do try not to worry too much. These are necessary precautions, which are in place to minimise the spread of the virus. You and your colleagues will likely be fine, long-term.’I nodded tightly, unable to find further words.After an uneasy pause, 'Have yourself a good day, Mr Jeeves.’ The line went dead.

The last I had seen of Bea had been last Friday, shuffling listlessly out of the office doors, laden down with a loot of groceries. She had two loud, hungry teenage sons at home.I thought of Paul and Anatole. Both were ex-smokers, their lungs still in the process of repairing decades of damage. I thought of my mother, swamped with desperate patients, a face mask clamped over her mouth.

I was suddenly unable to get enough air into my own lungs. My throbbing hearbeat seemed to overtake everything, pounding in my throat and my ears. I gripped at the kitchen counter with trembling clawed fingers. What was worst was the blank terror in my mind, my inability to think my way out of the paralysis. This godawful panic had saturated its way through my whole body.

The kitchen door opened behind me, Bertram bearing his own empty teacup.'Reg…?’ His voice was delicate.I tried not to sob as I felt tears escape my eyes.

After a few moments, his slow, slippered footsteps approached, and he softly draped his slender form upon my back. His arms slipped around my waist, and he rested his head on my shoulder. With my sharp, jagged inhales, his curls began to tickle my face.I could feel his own breaths, deep, even, tender. His body was a reassuring weight, and his hands began stroking up and down my arms.

As he sang, my heartbeat gradually slowed, falling in time with the unhurried tempo he had set. The tear tracks dried on my face.I found my words once more. 'Willy Wonka, Bertram?’'Well… you look like you could use some chocolate.’

He sat me down, and presented me with a family block of Cadbury’s along with my refreshed tea.'That was Bea’s GP. She has tested positive, so we must isolate for the next two weeks.’'Ah, well.’ He broke off a large piece and popped it in his mouth. 'It was bound to happen to one of us, sooner or later. Knowing Bea, her immune system’s already got the dratted thing running scared. Have you called her?’Tightness constricted my throat again, and Bertram was surprisingly astute. He rested his hand on mine. 'She’ll be alright, I promise you. So will the others. Anatole’s arsenal of garlic-heavy dishes will will be a formidable first defence, for one thing.’

I exhaled heavily. ’…I haven’t had such an episode of panic since secondary school.’ I felt a layer of shame now pressing upon my ravaged core.Bertram tsked. 'Oh, I got panic attacks all the time at Eton. Must have been all the stress from constantly dodging my house master’s fury. It always helped to cocoon myself in bed. I hope that the spindly Wooster corpus provided a passable impromptu shock blanket for you!’He laughed lightly, then his gaze settled on mine. I was pulled into a lengthy embrace. He spoke no more, instead imparting all that I needed through his sweet, balmy presence.

'You wouldn’t believe what a help my Simon has been,’ Bea told me, her congested voice even more distorted through the phone. 'Made a pea and ham soup last night that was actually edible. He even found a carton of my favourite ice-cream at the back of the Tesco freezer!’'So your appetite is still sound?’ I questioned.'Yeah, just have to deal with this bloody cough. Otherwise, staying in my PJs and binge-watching telly all day has been quite the holiday. The doc told me I’ll likely recover just fine.’'I am relieved to hear it.’'You just make sure you’re looking after yourself, Reg.’ Her tone had turned stern and auntly. 'Though I’m sure that that Bertram of yours is nursing you well proper. Do as he says, alright?’'I will be sure to.’'I’m gonna start on season 3 of “The Crown”, now. I promise I’ll keep spoilers to myself. Talk soon, love.’'Take care, Bea.’

I hung up, turning my attention to Vasily, warm and pliant in my lap. I scratched his ears and he purred deeply.'Dinner will be ready in about five, Reg,’ Bertram announced from the kitchen. 'Is beans on spelt toast with sauted red onions alright?’I chuckled to myself. 'That will be superlative, my shaman.’

5 things you’ll find in my bag: I don’t “use” my bag except when I am travelling, so it’s usually like: 1) my passport (which is my only valid ID, lol), 2) some small semi-dismantled transformers, 3) extra sweatshirts, 4) a miscellany of pens, 5) my laptop.

5 things you’ll find in my bedroom: 1) at least 18 scarves, 2) a great deal of paper with scribbles on it, somewhat neatly stacked, 3) 5 empty bottles from various liquids to ferry water from the kitchen because I don’t trust the water in my room, 4) 2 entire boxes of matzah I am not going to be able to finish by the end of the year even though I already ate 1 whole one since Pesach, 5) 3 beds, which are all for different purposes.

5 of my favorite things: 1) bogs, swamps, marshes, 2) good textures of things, 3) birdsong in early spring, 4) G-GIRLS! (in the abstract, I am too nervous to ever have anything to do with any particular girl), 5) the thought that soon I will have a place of my own with a kitchen and a cat and get to regularly go to services and hang out with other Jews.

5 things I’m currently into: 1) ASOUE, 2) relatedly and at this very moment, Latin jazz and mambo musician Tito Puente, 3) Weird Art, 4) relatedly and this entire month, art collective ghostfruits, 5) red lentils, which I got at a Russian supermarket and are labelled “tat” in a language that I think may be Turkish.

5 things on my to-do list: 1) scream, 2) continue screaming until I am dead, 3) listen to music so I won’t be so anxious, 4) ask the coolest person I have ever met to write a blog post about my game on how learn to play games so other people will see it, 5) keep working on the mapping game, and maybe locate another podcast to motivate me to do that. if anyone has any recs of podcasts with no men in them and gentle soothing voices and interesting subjects, hmu

Casey slammed his bag down on the table, and slumped into his seat. His fellow arts student, directly across from him, raised her eyebrow.

“What crawled up your sorry ass and died?” She asked, eyes skimming over the dark circles under his eyes, and the scratches on his arms. “Or better question, what attacked your sorry ass?”

“I went from having one demon, to two demons, to three demons, all of them pissy little assholes-” Casey counted on his fingers quickly. “-in under, like, a week or two or some shit. I don’t even know anymore. Jesus.”

“You got another cat? Cats? Two new cats, plus the first one. Yikes.”

“Yeah. Sure. My cats.”

“Three cats is a lot of cats, Casey. Even for a currently single art student.”

Casey dug out his energy drink, cracked it open, and took a sip before answering. “You’re telling me.”

“So what happened to you last night? The cuts and shit. Your cats turn on you or something?”

“Or something.” Casey grumbled, nursing his drink. Caffeine. Sweet, sweet caffeine. “Two of them got chased off by the other one, and then showed up again in the middle of the night- not even after four AM, god- and proceeded to continue their piss fit in the middle of my living room, trash my kitchen and couch in the process, and bring my neighbor’s wrath down on all of us. Again.”

Two extraordinarily angry demons dropping out of thin air- right onto another demon, who’d finally gone to sleep maybe an hour ago- in the middle of the night hadn’t been fun. Casey had woken up to the loudest racket he’d heard in… probably a few hours. Maybe.

There’d been fire involved. There’d been purple electricity involved. And just for shits and giggles- knowing Mikey- there’d been balls of pure energy launched into the fray that left chunks missing from whatever they hit.

And then April had kicked down his door, broom and water gun in hand, and everything went straight to metaphorical hell.

Not literal hell, thank god, but they certainly were heading that direction for a while there.

Donnie had tried to kill Casey at least twice more. Maybe Mikey too. That being- Mikey maybe trying to kill Casey, and Donnie maybe trying to kill Mikey. At the same time. Casey hadn’t been able to tell for sure if Mikey actually tried to kill him or not, but he had a very deep suspicion of that one stray plasma shot.

April was the only reason anyone actually went to bed afterwards. Casey now had three new words to live by: Witches Kill Bitches. Yikes.

Casey took another long sip of his drink.

He’d gotten electrocuted, beaten, and just a tiny bit burned. Fun night. Maybe one of the wildest he’d had in a while.

“Why don’t you just give two of the cats back? The first one sounded chill enough without the others.”

Good grief. None of us are ever getting a full night’s rest ever again.

In the end, Casey didn’t ask Raph about the soul thing. He was, in a word that he was never ever going to repeat to anyone, too chicken-shit to do it.

If Raph’s reply was “Yup. When we complete the contract and I take your soul- you die. Tough.” then Casey wasn’t sure how he’d handle that. Better to just avoid the whole awkward “will you kill me or not” conversation for now.

And besides, he didn’t really want to bring up the whole ‘ending the contract’ thing. If he did, that meant they’d have to start working on it again, and Casey… didn’t really want it to end. Not just yet.

He focused instead on surviving the transition into having Donnie as a member of their crowded household, and not dying in the process.

The lanky demon, dark as Raph but with way more hair and way less muscle, was a complete know-it-all. He took every chance he had to lord over Casey the fact that he was just some ‘ignorant human’, Donnie’s words not Casey’s.

He also took every chance he had to hint very unsubtly that Casey didn’t deserve Raph’s presence in his home, and Casey tried not to read deeper into that beyond speciest tendencies Donnie seemed to have.

Mostly though, as long as Donnie was preoccupied by the thick textbooks he kept getting from somewhere, or by Mikey or Raph, he didn’t give Casey much attention at all. Just lounged around Casey’s apartment building, and made snide comments at everyone.

It wasn’t intolerable, seeing as Donnie had gotten over his ‘murder the human’ phase pretty quick. Still annoying for Casey though, trying to make it through his own apartment, only to have a long tail trip him up, or a large wing snap out in his face. Casey retaliated with holy water mixed into Donnie’s food portions, smacking the demon’s protruding appendages with his hockey sticks, and sicking Raph on his brother when all else failed.

Or April, but watching the two of them stare one another down, broom and magic in hand, was a bit hard on Casey’s heart, so. Not so much that option. He liked his apartment intact, thank you.

So basically, Casey snapped at Donnie and Donnie snapped at him and they both threatened violence until someone pushed them apart. No blood was shed- no more than what was usual lately- and they somehow found a balance of mutual dislike.

In the end, neither of them liked one another, but Donnie had been very clear he wasn’t leaving until Raph did, and Casey had been very clear that he either shove it or shove off.

But no one was dead yet, so. Kudos to both of them.

Now Casey was dealing with a new problem, created another time over with the newest addition to his already too cramped home: feeding them all.

“Why do you guys have to eat so fucking much?” Casey grumbled, shoving the heavy grocery cart along. “God. This is more than I eat in a month.”

“I need power, because you’re a moron who can’t even remember why he summoned me,” Raph answered as he tossed yet another package of food into the cart. “And because Don and Mike are little shits who like to be as annoying as they can.”

“Yeah, I kinda figured that out,” Casey said sulkily. Accommodating three demons at once was a major hassle, especially when one was liable to set the neighborhood on fire for a laugh, and the other was still in the middle of a silent pissing contest with his neighboring witch. Oh the trials of adulthood. Casey felt like he deserved a vacation.

If it wasn’t for the insane load of cash Donnie had magicked up, Casey knew he would’ve hit broke by now. From where the cash had come from, Donnie wouldn’t say, but looking at all the zeroes in his account, Casey hadn’t felt like questioning its origins.

He had however, questioned why he wasn’t paying some price for the generous donation. Donnie had replied vaguely that his due was being covered by Raph, and then promptly fucked off into the open air; lifting off the ground with sweeps of his wings, and leaving Casey outside the supermarket without a real explanation.

Upside of things, Casey had gotten to send his dad and sister a good chunk of cash, and he didn’t have to worry about student loans anymore. Downside, his dad had texted to check if Casey had switched career choices to become a hitman and his sister had texted with the question if escort prices had suddenly gone up.

Raph came back to the cart with an armful of hotdog and hamburger buns, and dumped them into the already very full cart.

“For the meat,” Raph explained shortly to Casey’s questioning look.

Before Raph could answer, a shopping cart went racing past their aisle, and Casey caught a glimpse of Mikey riding it and what looked like majority of the raw meat section stacked in with him.

“That meat,” Raph said, pointing after his brother, and Casey could hear semi-maniacal laughter coming from that direction.

Casey sighed, and started to push their cart towards the direction Mikey had gone. “Guess we’re having a barbeque tonight, since no way this is all fitting in the fridge.”

Something crashed on the other side of the store, and Casey started pushing their cart a bit faster.

After they’d wrangled Mikey, magicked away the witnesses memory of the demon’s full-tilt crash into the flower stand, repaired said flower stand, and Donnie had at some point reappeared mysteriously out of thin air to snark at everyone- Casey managed to herd the three demons towards the check out with their purchases.

Again, he got his usual cashier, and the man gave Casey another look for his newest addition to their gaggle. Donnie admittedly stood out even more than Mikey did, in looks at least, being well over six feet. Mikey still had him beat in aura of crazy though.

In comparison to his siblings, one twitching constantly and the other giving everything a calculative and condescending look, Raph was practically normal seeming. Slightly below average height, and just a tinge of surliness to him.

And then Raph hiccupped a smoke ring, and the image was ruined.

Casey paid for their food, and didn’t give the cashier any explanation for his friend group.

Since Casey didn’t technically have a barbecue for barbecue, and neither did April, the task of cooking the meat got passed over to the walking fire pit. They also ended up relocating to the roof, after Raph set Casey’s ceiling on fire.

April had brought one of her folding chairs up with her, and was reading a book near her garden. The position was only semi-protective seeming, and everyone was giving her garden a wide birth.

Mikey was busy playing with a cat that’d appeared out of nowhere, despite Casey’s apartment building being pet free. Casey had started to question the cat earlier, but then he’d seen it had deep, bottomless black eyes, and had figured he’d leave well enough alone. At least it seemed more interested in rolling around on the roof with Mikey, rather than causing extra property damage like all the other demons in Casey’s life.

Donnie was the opposite of Mikey, completely lax and silent. He was laid out on a blanket that he’d probably stolen from Casey’s linen closet. Wings out and tail twitching, Donnie seemed intent on catching the last rays of the sun before it went down, slowly paging through yet another thick book he’d pulled out of nowhere. Eventually, he and April were probably going to bond like the condescending smarty-pants assholes they both were, and then everyone else was probably going to die.

Raph was rotating a couple dozen meat products in the air, flames licking around them in helix spirals. It smelt great, and Raph’s intent focus on keeping the food from burning gave Casey the chance to side-eye him a bit.

Admittedly, Casey might’ve been side-eyeing all the demon brothers, because shit- it wasn’t like they weren’t all relatively to very good looking. Even Mikey wasn’t exactly hard on the eyes, as unlikely as it was for Casey to ever risk going for him. Because he liked his extremities intact and not bitten off, and he totally still caught Mikey eyeing him like food sometimes.

Point being- Casey had a lot of very attractive men staying in his apartment at the moment, and wow was he very gay.

He tried to remind himself that A) two out of the three would probably kill him if they got the chance, and B) his focus was on Raph, as impossible to obtain as the demon likely was, and that he shouldn’t get distracted by the demon’s siblings.

He was in the middle of yet another sketch of a full demon form- this time Donnie’s, because the long swooping tail and wings were fun to draw. He was still trying to get the proper look down, since at the moment it looked too much like a regular dragon, and not a demon.

“Hey Raph,” Casey said, glancing up from his drawing again. “Quick question. How come you all look like dragons? Not very demony.”

“Because that’s what fits this era best,” Raph replied. Which made no sense.

“Elaborate a little more than that?”

Raph gave him a look, but answered anyways. “Our manifesting shapes change depending on the plain of existence we enter, and also with whatever the sentient population will fear best. In this era, it’s apparently big scaly lizards with wings. I’m not complaining, since it’s better than some we’ve gotten.”

“Dragons are cool shit though,” Casey said, twirling his pencil as he watched the meat in the air do the same. “They’re everywhere in media. Not exactly the boogieman.”

“Worked well enough on you,” Raph said, giving Casey a teasing smirk.

Casey scoffed. “Man, whatever. It was morning and I was hung over. ‘scuse me for not being able to keep my cool with a fucking demon in my house.”

Raph gave a warm laugh, and Casey found himself smiling just a tad wider than he usually would.

“Okay, I got another question then,” Casey said, leaning forwards on his crossed legs. “Which one of your ‘manifestations’ has been your favorite? You gotta have one, seein’ as you’re old as shit now.”

“Shut up, I’m young by demon standards,” Raph said, rolling his eyes. “And if you really wanna know, one of them was one I had just a couple hundred years ago. Not on this plain of existence, but it wasn’t too far off in similarity.”

“Yeah? What was it?”

“A turtle,” Raph said, and Casey couldn’t help the startled laugh that came out of him.

“What? No way. How is a turtle scary?” Casey asked in disbelieving amusement. “They’re like- tiny and cute and shit. Slow too.”

Raph shrugged, twirling his wrist so all the meat in the air would too. “I’d show you, but since I’m busy… hey Donnie!”

“What?” Donnie said in a tone that Casey recognized easily from his own sibling.

“Get over here; I want you to show Casey what the turtle manifestation looked like.”

“Ugh, no way. I’m busy right now,” Donnie said, giving them both a grumpy look.

Raph twirled a couple hotdogs threateningly towards Donnie. “Do it, or I use your horns as extra roasting sticks.”

“Raph- come on, don’t be a dick.”

“Don’t be a lazy shit.”

“Raph.”

“Donnie.”

“Fine,” Donnie grumbled, getting up if only because the hotdogs had been getting dangerously close to his seven inch horns.

Casey stood up too, officially and extremely intrigued about what would happen next. He wasn’t alone in that either, since April had set down her book to watch the rest of them, and Mikey and his weird cat had gone still.

Donnie steepled his fingers together, and closed his eyes. For a moment, nothing happened, but then a rune circle appeared under his feet. From the bright purple magic, a wall of water swirled up and around Donnie. The height of the airborne whirlpool grew, and Casey could see that something inside was growing with it.

Then, the water’s surface broke at the bottom, and receded upwards to reveal-

-a giant bipedal turtle.

Casey let out a shocked laugh, and couldn’t believe his eyes.

Donnie had gone from six something to twelve something, now with the addition of a shell, plastron, and dark green scales. A long staff was strapped to his back, held in place by royal purple sashes wrapped around Donnie’s chest and shell. The water receded to pool in the air above Donnie’s head, and it condescend into a sort of reflective disk. Casey mentally compared it to the halos he’d seen on angels in church murals.

Donnie reopened his eyes, which had remained luminous red through the transformation, and looked down Casey with a displeased look. Somehow, even with a beak like mouth, he managed to sneer at Casey.

“Ta da,” Donnie said, giving a half-assed jazz hands. “One turtle reporting for duty. Can I change back now? This itches.”

Casey noted that instead of discordant and harsh, the demon’s words were actually close to lyrical sounding in this form.

“Why’s it itch?” Casey asked, secretly hoping to prolong things so he could memorize the finer details of this form. Shit, this would look amazing in watercolors.

“Because it’s not the right one for this world,” Donnie said in a deeply annoyed tone. “It’s wrong and it feels a bit like wearing a winter coat in summer, I guess.”

“Oh. Neat.” Casey replied vaguely, still busy memorizing.

“You know,” April spoke up. “I wonder if anyone can see the shit you guys do on this roof. I don’t know about you, but it would be weird to see a giant bipedal turtle on my roof if I didn’t know better.”

“I have spells that erase memories of events like this,” Donnie replied smoothly, with only a hint of ‘duh’ in his tone.

“Yeah, but I’m pretty sure Raph doesn’t, because yesterday a guy at the coffee shop down the way said he saw a really weird ass bird in the sky. About the size of a mini-van? Pointy horns too.”

Everyone looked at Raph, who looked a little embarrassed.

“Raph.” Donnie said in a disapproving tone.

“Sometimes I forget to turn them on, okay?” Raph defended.

“I can’t believe you.”

“Shut up! Do you want dinner or not?”

“I do! We do!” Mikey interjected, waving his cat around in the air like something out of the Lion King. The cat made a long warbling meow, and Casey’s felt goosebumps prickle on his skin.

While the others were distracted, he took the chance to pick up his sketchbook and start a rapid gesture drawing of Donnie. Maybe later, he could get Raph do switch forms too, and draw him as well.

So while Casey hurriedly drew, Donnie got pelted by hotdogs as he kept berating Raph for his carelessness, said hotdogs quickly snatched out of the air by Mikey and his cat and devoured, and April calmly watched the whole show from over the top of her novel.

All in all, a pretty normal evening for them lately.

Casey was about done with being assaulted by demons.

Example: being stalked on the way home from campus, and feeling increasingly evil vibes being aimed at the back of his head.

The first afternoon in days that didn`t involve one or more of his mostly unwanted house guests tagging along- and this happens.

Casey risked a glance over his shoulder.

The man, concealed by his loose black hoodie and blue ball cap, was still following him. He seemed normal enough from first glance, no tail or horns or anything in plain sight, but Casey also knew better by now than to be fooled by that.

Casey thought he saw a flash of icy blue eyes from under the hat brim, and he whipped his eyes back to the sidewalk in front of him.

He was at least a half hour’s walk from his apartment still, and the bus wouldn’t save him now.

Why didn’t demons have cell phones? Raph could probably destroy a small city on his lonesome, but he didn’t have a god damn cell phone.

Casey tugged out his phone, trying to casually speed up his walking as he did.

A cold shudder went through Casey, and he knew the guy following him had gotten closer again. On and off as he’d been walking the last five minutes, every time Casey looked back, the guy got closer.

Fear sweat prickled the back of his neck, and Casey swallowed.

He didn’t have a handy bat or hockey stick, and he didn’t have a demon protecting him either. Unless someone got here quickly, he was probably going to end up demon food.

Pretty sick way to go, all things considering, but he’d rather not die on this particular day.

“Respond,” Casey muttered. “Please, god- April, respond already.”

Casey felt a rush of air go past him, and it felt way too fucking cold for this time of year. Something not actually there tried to climb up his spine, and Casey shuddered all the way down to his soul.

He typed an all caps message of ‘HOLY FUCK APRIL IM SERIOUS PLS RESPOND RN’ and started walking even faster.

Wow this was not how he wanted to die right now. Maybe later, maybe a few years down the line, but not right fucking now.

His phone chimed, and Casey gasped out a choked laugh.

Raph’s on his way. ETA should be less than a minute.

Why can’t our lives be normal anymore.

Casey would have replied again, but a violent shudder went through him as an ice cold feeling gripped his body. He didn’t want to turn around, really, he didn’t- but he did anyways.

Raph’s brother- probably the elusive Leo- stared Casey dead in the eye, from just a block away. Navy blue eyes froze Casey to his core, and he felt like he was suddenly breathing sub-zero air.

Leo opened his mouth, and something reverberated through the air. The other humans walking down the street around Casey stumbled, and Casey’s knees came close to buckling. He only barely recovered enough to keep standing.

Welp. Time to start running.

Casey bolted fast as he could, and he cursed Raph for bringing this kind of insanity into his life.

Casey might’ve been slacking on his exercise lately- too much demonic influence in his life to even remember- but he could still sprint like the wind. He’d never quite grown out of the skinniness from his teenage years, and he counted his blessing that he hadn’t packed on muscle like he’d hoped he would. Wind whistled past him as he ran, and Casey felt caught between sheer terror and utter excitement.

Nothing like running for your life to kick the old adrenaline into gear.

Casey risked a partial glance over his shoulder, and regretted it as caught sight of Leo still hot on his tail. The demon wasn’t even running, he was just walking- and yet, he was still only a block behind Casey.

Fucking demons. Fucking demon magic. Fucking life.

Casey pushed himself to run faster, and prayed he wouldn’t land on his knee wrong and wipe out. He’d be screwed if he did.

He yelped as the sidewalk ahead of him was suddenly coated in ice, and he had to stop short before he hit it. Casey turned to the left, and darted across the street. A lone car honked at him as he ran, and for a second, the accident that’d fucked his knee over flashed across his eyes.

Then it was gone, and his feet hit the sidewalk across the street. He kept running, lungs heaving as he attempted to give Raph time to show the fuck up and save his ass.

Casey had to change directions again though, as the sidewalk again was covered in ice. This time with jagged points aimed directly at Casey, ones that would impale him clear through if he fell on them.

Casey dodged away from them, and found himself in an alley. An alley with a dead end.

Shit. Clichés. He hated clichés.

Casey whirled to run back out, and found Leo blocking the way. Casey retreated further into the alley, and raised his hands to the calmly advancing demon.

“Okay, so, I dunno if the other two have told you this yet-” Casey swallowed, trying for bravado instead of nervousness. “-but I’m officially off the menu. Just ask Raph, he’ll vouch for me.”

Leo didn’t pay his words any mind, and the air around Casey suddenly went freezing. With a wave of his hand, encircled by blue runes, Leo sent the alley into the deep freeze.

Casey’s airways went dry from the sudden drop, and he glanced around in panic. The walls of the alley were quickly being covered in ice, sharp points growing from both sides like jagged teeth. Casey’s shoes skidded momentarily, as the ice spread across the ground as well.

“I’m serious, Leo,” Casey said, trying to get the demon’s attention by saying his name. “Raph and me are cool. So if you could, like, be a little less literal with the chill, he’ll be here any second now to explain the shit that’s been going on-”

Leo remained quiet, but shut Casey up with a harsh gust of ice wind. Casey inhaled sharply, and coughed at the sheer coldness. It spread through him, and he coughed harder as he struggled to breathe.

Then-

He realized he couldn’t move his feet.

Casey made the mistake of glancing down, and saw that his feet were encased in ice. Ice that was steadily climbing up his legs, and locking him in place.

The dark ice moved quickly, spreading up Casey’s body almost faster than he could register what was happening. It covered his legs, and then spread to his torso, and Casey couldn’t breathe, ice filling his lungs and chilling him through.

His eyes clouded with tears, as ice wind kept whipping around him. He was half blind, more than half frozen, and came to the conclusion he probably was going to die.

He managed one last cough, before the ice spread to his neck, and froze his lungs in place. He felt the ice spreading down his arms, and Casey couldn’t think it was so cold. Everything was burning, the freezing prison wrapping itself around every piece of his body.

Casey felt the ice creep onto his face, his vision blurring as it did, and he couldn’t fight it at all.

The ice covered his nose, and spread over his eyes and head, and then Casey was trapped in the dark. His eyes frozen shut and his lungs frozen in place.

Then-

Something flared, hot and burning, on his chest-

And the ice shattered around his face, around his chest, and Casey could breathe again.

He blinked rapidly, sucking in as much air as he could, and tried to clear the clinging ice crystals to his face. Everything hurt, his hands and feet and legs and every bit of skin on him- they felt like they were still encased in ice. Cold enough that the warmer air was making them burn.

Casey saw something red flicker on his chest again, but he couldn’t see well enough to recognize what it was.

He spotted Leo, who’s calm, blank expression had broken. He was staring at Casey in shock, visibly confused as to why Casey wasn’t a human popsicle.

Then Raph fell out of the sky, right onto Leo, and threw his brother across the alleyway. Casey managed a short laugh at the sudden shift in mood, Leo looking utterly confused and offended by the turn of events, and Raph looking like he wanted to set everything and Leo on fire, the both of them yelling at one another in increasing volumes-

And then Casey’s vision went black, and he felt himself hit the ground.

Delectable Delicacies

Chapter 1

Sharp cold drops rapped on the tiny red and black plaid umbrella. Still, she might have stayed dry if the wind that kicked up the leaves hadn’t also whipped her umbrella inside out into a useless tool of protection against the rain. Sylvie picked up her pace; she was two blocks from home, and soaked by the time she turned the key in the lock. At least, she thought, her books had been protected in a waterproof backpack. If she had left the library sooner, she probably would have gotten home ahead of the rain, but just as she was leaving she had found a book pushed behind two larger volumes. They had been sticking out a bit and when she tried to line them up, they resisted. Pulling both volumes out she discovered a hardcover book, wider than it was tall with a blue cover entitled, Simply Delectable Recipes. It was filled with foods she had never heard of, all meticulously photographed. She had shoved it under her other three books and went to check them out.

Though soaked, Sylvie, quickly built a fire, watched until it crackled and popped, then had gone to take a shower. Finally warm, she plunked in a chair by the fire with a bowl of soup, crackers, and a hot mug of tea, and draped a blanket over her legs and feet. Her visit to the library had produced good results. The first book she had found actually pulled you into the story, allowing you to replace one of the principle characters. The second gave you a choice of reading the book or projecting the characters into your space, so you could watch, rather than read, and the third, allowed you to dream a story by placing it under your pillow. But the cookbook looked ordinary, which was also fine.

She placed her empty dishes on a table beside her and picked it up. Some people only used cookbooks for finding recipes, but she also loved to read them. Cooking was one of her passions and this one was promising. Her best friends were coming tomorrow for a potluck, and maybe she could try a recipe on them. She opened the book, and could swear aromas spilled out. The introduction was short, stating that all ingredients could be collected locally, or if necessary purchased in the market. Best results though, came from collecting and processing your own ingredients. Substituting ingredients or adding to recipes was not recommended. It stipulated that all recipes were time tested and precise to produce the results shown in the photos. There was also a warning to prepare the ingredients before beginning to cook, as well as not to taste while cooking. The table of contents was arranged by season. Well, thought Sylvie, who was in the habit of reading several recipes then heading to the kitchen to locate and perhaps substitute ingredients, this was going to be a different experience. On each page, in addition to the recipe and list of ingredients, details were given about obtaining them, along with hand drawn maps for where they could be found growing wild, and background and historical information about each item in the recipe. Sylvie had lived in Castleton most of her life and recognized many of the woods or fields mentioned for foraging, the names of farms in the area, or local supermarkets. This in itself made it an interesting read, and she browsed looking for something simple she could try on her friends, as well as easily finding the ingredients. If she was going to try a recipe tomorrow, the makings needed to be readily available.

The next morning the sun was shining, and the air smelled clean and fresh, something that a good rain always left behind. She took her bicycle and a bag for collecting berries; she would also need to go to the store for other items.

Everything was prepared by the time the doorbell rang, and smiling and exuberant Gregory, Millicent and Rose stood on her steps holding their contributions for dinner. It had been a while since they had seen each other school, work, and volunteering kept them busy. Coats off, hugs shared, they headed to the kitchen to heat up the food and set the table for dinner. No one saw Sylvie’s desert for she had placed it in the refrigerator to cool.

When she brought it out, it mirrored the photo in the book, which lived up to its name, Delectable Delicacies. It was crème and cake sprinkled with almonds, vanilla and spices she had been able to find at only one store. The berries, native to Castleton, that grew on a low bush with red leaves had been cooked down into a sauce, mixed with maple syrup, that had been spread between layers of cake and crème. She was please how it turned out, and now waited, looking in anticipation at the faces of her friends as he or she dipped their spoon in and took a bite. Bliss radiated on their faces and sighs of satisfaction emitted, so Sylvie went for her own taste, but then there were three clear popping sounds and where her guests had been were two afghan hounds, and a kitten white, with black and grey markings on its body and around one eye.

Sylvie dropped her spoon and ran to the kitchen, picked up the book, frantically scanning the recipes and the introduction to find out what had happened and how to reverse it. There was nothing she had missed in the introduction, but she now noticed that beneath each recipe was the result of trying that concoction. At the back of the book a new page of text had appeared. It read: If you hold this book, it has come to you out of need. You are the next owner for a 6-month period, the end of which you will return and hide this book, so it can come into the hands of the next person. Do not copy recipes; this is the only existing copy of this book, and should remain so. You may however, commit to memory as much information as you are able, and photograph the pictures. The penalty for not following these instructions is that whoever tasted your first recipe will revert to their current state permanently. You have found this book because you will need it, so take good care and keep it in a safe place. She breathed a sigh of relief knowing her friends were not permanently dogs and a cat, but was perplexed and a anxious as to why and who it would be necessary to bewitch with food.

She returned to the table with the book in her hand. The dogs had finished the desert, and the cat had leaped up onto the table and was still licking at the cream and filling. She picked him up, and shooed the dogs into the sitting room where they settled next to the fire and fell asleep. The kitten climbed into her lap, circled looking for a good position and did the same.

Before sleeping, Sylvie spread blankets over her friends, tossed more logs on the fire, then collapsed into the couch. She plumped up her pillow pulled up the covers, and was soon asleep. At 6:00, through the gap between curtains, the sun bathed the room in patterns and reflections. Rose stretched, felt the hardness of the floor beneath her and sat up. What was she doing on the floor? Sylvie had enough beds for everyone. Her body ached. She stretched upward, leaned left, then right before noticing Gregory sprawled half in the chair, half out. Sylvie was the only one who looked comfortable. She stood, and Millicent turned and looked at her, taking in the situation. “What time is it?” I have an early class and then I need to be at work. Rose picked up her phone, “6:30, you still have time. “What are we doing on the floor?” Millicent asked, “Sylvie has enough beds for all of us.”

“My thought exactly,” Rose responded. Hearing her name, Sylvie opened her eyes. “Oh, Rose, Millicent, you’re okay. I was so worried, but the book said you would change back.” Back from what, they asked her. “From dogs to people,” she responded. “Gregory will have a few kinks to work out when he wakes, but you don’t know how relieved I am. Even though the book said you would turn back.

“Did you know this would happen, they demanded? Of course not, do you think I would transform my best friends, without asking them first. So she began explaining, and showed them the book, and somewhere in between Gregory woke up and then someone noticed the time, and there was a lot of scrambling, but they agreed to meet at 4:00 at Le Libre et Café.

Our ayi Xiao Wan has been working for us full time for almost 6 years, she takes care of everything in my home: shopping vegetables, fruits, cleaning, cooking, laundry and helping take care of our girls. She also takes care of our cat and keep our home secure and clean while we are away. We are very happy with her. Now we don't need her full time anymore, and we want to find her morning part time job. If you are looking for a part time ayi , We highly recommend her. Reminders

» Carrying Copies of Passport and Visa

We have been informed by Public Security Bureau that policemen are being sent to different locations like supermarkets or streets to check people's passport and visa. We would like to remind our community that carrying a copy of your passport and visa in your wallet is recommended so you are fine if you are checked. Please note that the policemen will show you their working ID when they stop you. If they don't, please ask. If you forget to carry the two copies, they could take you back to their office. In this case, we suggest you contact your employer who can confirm your passport and visa information. They may also stop unaccompanied students so I would recommend that you review this procedure with them as well.

» New Residence Permits, Work Permits or Passports?

Whenever you or your family members receive new residence permits, work permits and/or passports, please be sure to send copies of your new documents to the Admissions office, in the Welcome Center (1st floor High School). Or, email soft copies to Admissions. Keeping your children's files up to date helps us keep in compliance with Chinese governmental regulations.

» No Bicycles for Children Under Age 12 on Public Streets - Shanghai International Schools Association (SISA)

The following information regarding bicycle riding in Shanghai is shared in an attempt to be helpful to all its member schools. For safety purposes, the regulations in Shanghai allow for bicycles to be ridden on public streets only by children age 12 and above. This regulation is strictly enforced in Puxi, but is unevenly applied in Pudong. The immediate danger is that families may assume that local protections for bicycle riders may be the same as in their own country, but they are not. It is important to be aware that if a child under 12 is involved in any kind of accident on a public street or crossing, the parent may be held responsible. Sidewalks and bicycle paths along public roads are considered part of the public roads. In addition, as accident insurance is relatively new to China and there are not many precedents with these situations, your own accident or medical insurance company has the right to refuse cover in the event of violation of the local law. We hope that better understanding will result in better safety for younger children.

Delectable Delicacies (Edited)

Sharp cold drops rapped on the tiny red and black plaid umbrella. Still, she might have stayed dry if the wind kicking up leaves hadn’t whipped her umbrella inside out. Sylvie picked up her pace; she was two blocks from home, and soaked by the time she turned the key in the lock. At least her books had been protected in her backpack. She quickly built a fire, watched until it crackled and popped, then had gone to take a shower. Finally warm, she plunked in a chair by the fire with a bowl of soup, crackers, and a hot mug of tea, and draped a blanket over her legs and feet. She’d have been home sooner, but given to perfectionism and unable to line up two large books, she had pulled them out, and discovered a hardcover book, wider than it was tall with a blue cover entitled, Simple Delectable Recipes. It was filled with foods she had never heard of, all meticulously photographed. She had shoved it under her other three books and had gone to check them out.

Placing her empty dishes on the table Sylvie reached for her backpack and pulled out her books. The first allowed you to become one of the principle characters. The second gave you a choice of reading the story or projecting the characters into your space, so you could watch, rather than read, and the third, allowed you to dream a story by placing it under your pillow. The cookbook, though, looked ordinary, but while some people only used cookbooks for finding recipes, Sylvie loved to read them. Cooking was a passion and this one looked promising. Her best friends were coming with potluck, tomorrow, and maybe she could try a recipe on them. She opened the book, and aromas spilled out – mint, oregano, cinnamon. She inhaled deeply and breathed out slowly, wrapping them in memory. Then, with some reticence proceeded to the table of contents. It was divided by seasons. The introduction was short, stating that all ingredients could be collected locally, or if necessary purchased in the market. Best results though, came from collecting and processing your own ingredients. Substituting ingredients or adding to recipes was not recommended. It stipulated that all recipes were time tested and precise to produce the results shown in the photos. There was also a warning to prepare the ingredients before beginning to cook, as well as not to taste while cooking. Well, thought Sylvie, who was in the habit of reading several recipes then heading to the kitchen to locate and perhaps substitute ingredients, this was going to be a different experience. On each page, in addition to the recipe and list of ingredients, details were given about obtaining them, along with hand drawn maps for where they could be found growing wild, and background and historical information about each item in the recipe. Sylvie had lived in Castleton most of her life and recognized many of the woods or fields mentioned for foraging, the names of farms in the area, or local supermarkets. This in itself made it an interesting read, and she browsed looking for something simple she could make, as well as easily finding the ingredients. If she was going to try a recipe tomorrow, the makings needed to be readily available.

The next morning the sun was shinning, and the air smelled clean and fresh, something that a good rain always left behind. She took her bicycle and a bag for collecting berries; she would also need to go to the outdoor market for other items.

Everything was prepared by the time the doorbell rang, and smiling and exuberant, Gregory, April and Millicent stood on her steps holding their dinner contributions. It had been a while since they had seen each other school, work, and volunteering kept them busy. Coats off, hugs shared, they headed to the kitchen to heat up the food and set the table for dinner. No one saw Sylvie’s desert for she had placed it in the refrigerator to cool.

When she brought it out, it mirrored the photo in the book. It was cake and crèam sprinkled with almonds, vanilla and spices she had been able to find at only one store. The berries, native to Castleton, that grew on a low bush with red leaves had been cooked down into a sauce, mixed with maple syrup, that had been spread between layers of cake and cream. She was please how it turned out, and now waited, looking in anticipation at the faces of her friends they dipped their spoons in and took a bite. Bliss on their faces and sighs of satisfaction, meant Sylvie could taste her own, but as she lifted the spoon to her mouth, there were three singular popping sounds and where her guests had been were two afghan hounds, and a kitten, white with black and grey marking on its body and around one eye.

Sylvie dropped her spoon and ran to the kitchen. Picking up the book, she frantically scanned the recipe and the introduction to find an explanation of what had happened and how to reverse it. There was nothing in the introduction, but she now noticed that beneath the recipe and every other recipe was the result of creating that concoction, and at the back of the book a new page of text had appeared. It read: If you hold this book, it has come to you out of need. You are the next owner for a 6-month period, the end of which you will return and re-hide this book, to be found by another. Do not copy recipes; this is the only existing copy of this book, and should remain so. You may, however, commit to memory as much information as you are able, and photograph the pictures. The penalty for not following these instructions is that whoever tasted your first recipe will revert to their current state permanently. You have found this book because you will need it, so take good care and keep it safe. She breathed a sigh of relief knowing her friends were not permanently dogs and a cat, but why had it come to her and who would she have to bewitch.

She returned to the table with the book in her hand. The dogs had finished the desert, and the cat was on the table licking at the cream filling. She picked him up, and shooed the dogs into the sitting room where they settled next to the fire and fell asleep. The kitten climbed into her lap, circled looking for a good position and did the same.

Before going to sleep, Sylvie spread blankets over her friends, tossed more logs on the fire, then collapsed into the couch. She plumped up her pillow pulled up the covers, and was soon asleep.

At 6:00, through the gap between curtains, the sun bathed the room in patterns and reflections. Rose stretched, felt the hardness of the floor beneath her and sat up. What was she doing on the floor? Sylvie had enough beds for everyone. Her body ached. She closed her eyes her complete awareness in the stretch and pushed upward, leaned left, then right a couple of times before turning and noticing Gregory sprawled half in the chair, half out. Sylvie was the only one who looked comfortable. Rose stood, and Millicent turned and looked up at her, taking in the situation. “What time is it?” I have an early class and then I need to be at work. Rose picked up her phone, “6:30, you still have time. “What are we doing on the floor?, Millicent asked, repeating Rose’s question and comment. Sylvie has enough beds for all of us.”

“My thought exactly,” Rose responded. Sylvie, hearing her name, sat up, eyes opened. “Oh, Rose, Millicent, you’re okay. I was so worried, but the book said you would change back.” Back from what, they asked her in unison. “From dogs to people,” she responded. “Gregory will have a few kinks to work out when he wakes, but you don’t know how relieved I am. Even though the book said you would turn back.”

“Did you know this would happen?”

‘ Of course not, do think I would transform my best friends, without asking. So she began explaining, and showed them the book, and somewhere in between Gregory woke up. and then someone noticed the time, and there was a lot of scrambling, but they agreed to meet at 4:00 at Le Libre et Café.

It was filled with foods she had never heard of, all meticulously photographed. She had shoved it under her other three books and went to check them out.

As she stood, April turned and looked around, taking in the situation. “What time is it?” I have an early class and then I need to be at work. Rose picked up her phone, “6:30, you still have time. “What are we doing on the floor? Sylvie has enough beds for all of us.”

“What do you mean we’re okay?” So she began explaining what happened, and somewhere in between Gregory woke up and at some point someone noticed the time, and there was a lot of scrambling to get out the door. They agreed to meet at 4:00 at Le Livre et Café.
