Paz is a total gamer, he absolutely loves Animal Crossing and he makes a whole section of his town dedicated to you

Paz throws the absolute cutest baby shower and anyone and everyone is invited

You both decide to wait until after the baby is born to find out the gender, and Paz has a raffle going on at the restaurant where people can guess the gender

He makes you both cute matching sweaters for your characters

Paz is the one that introduced Grogu to minecraft

Boba cause so much havoc on social media

He totally is leaving thirst comments under your pictures on Instagram not realizing everyone else can see them too

You have a Instagram set up for Fennec too because she is just so photogenic, at least when you take the pictures

I think Boba is actually pretty proficient at using Twitter, and its more or less because he uses it to stalk people 9/10

You have a tumblr where you tease and make fun of Boba, mostly posting quotes or the silly pictures that Boba takes

Boba totally dominates at any board game, but especially Monopoly

That game of strip poker did not last long at all, and you think Boba quite literally was hiding aces up his sleeves

Boba makes sure you are always thoroughly satisfied before he drops you off at work every morning

When Boba finds out you're pregnant he celebrates, and its huge

He starts going all out buying anything and everything he can/wants

Boba pouts because you ruined his and Grogu's bonding time

When Din comes to pick up Grogu, Grogu looks him in the eye and says "cocksucker"

Din has a heart attack and Boba laughs as you yell at him asking where he heard that

Grogu says that he heard uncle Boba say it while on the phone

Din tries to follow Paz’s recipes from his YouTube, and it always turns out badly and you have to come in and save it

Din totally loves Pewdiepie's humor

Din gets frustrated with social media and ends up just making an empty account so he can follow you and watch videos, but after the whole Pedro Pascal disaster he never posts anything

Grogu and you are his profile picture though

When Grogu goes around telling the kids at school he is the mandalorian he just sighs

And when all of the kids start quoting the show, he just starts quoting them back so they will stop bothering him

When Din announced the pregnancy Paz got so excited to have another nephew/niece

Paz lets Din hold the baby shower at the restaurant and he makes all of the food, including little gender reveal cake pops

Paz gifts the two of you a photo album at has pictures of the two of you and grogu, but it is still half empty so you can add more memories of your expanding family

Boba just hands Din house keys a day says the place is paid off and he's covering the bills for the first year (he also had a nice play set built in the backyard for Grogu)

Week 8: Gaming Communities, Social Gaming and Live Streaming

For this week, we examined the role of ‘social games’ and emerging threads correlated to digital communities, including game culture, social communities and networked broadcasting, which is a notion that Taylor TL (2018, p. 10) discusses in one of the readings. Despite the fixation of game live streaming in this reading, Taylor also addresses the concepts of technology, culture, and media, specifically Youtube. Concerning YouTube, "there are increasing forms of algorithmic regulation that monitor content and take often-contested action against particular channels." Taylor TL (2018, p. 10). Lastly, game live streaming is part of a tremendous change happening within the media industries.

What is Gaming Communities?

A community is a group of people who share a common interest (Dictionary.com). Furthermore, gaming communities are a group of people who share their interest in gaming. Gaming communities are not only about playing games but more so people who like to watch people playing games as entertainment, they are the people who have a common interest in video games (Button 2019).

The constructive and dissentient sides to gaming:

Gaming can either be perceived as a positive or a dangerous thing. For this week's post, I am going to discuss both sides of gaming, including how it has negatively and positively impacted people's lives, including my own.

Let’s start with the affirmative sides to gaming...

The social aspect of gaming:

Video games and gameplay, in general, are prevalent in the lives of most teenagers, particularly boys ("84% of boys, compared with 59% of girls") Playing video games have been proven to serve as an influential place for the making and maintenance of friendships. According to research, "72% of all teens play video games on a computer, game console or portable device like a cellphone, and 81% of teens have or have access to a game console." ("Video Games, Teen Boys and Building Social Skills and Friendships", 2015)

Video gaming and internet technology have vastly shifted over the past two decades. Decades-ago gamers had to be in the same room to play games with their friends, but in saying this, with innovations in the gaming and design world, platforms have advanced the opportunities to interact and socialize while playing. These adaptions have enabled gamers to play games with other players in person (83%) and online (75%). This includes gamers playing with friends they know in person (89%), friends they know only online (54%), and online with others who are not friends (52%). With these abilities, teens have enhanced opportunities to socialise and spend time with friends and other gamers in more meaningful ways.

What is Live Streaming?

Live streaming is watching, creating and sharing video in real-time, unlike pre-recorded videos that can be edited, live streaming is broadcasting anything that is happening at the time, so it is uncensored (Think U Know). In the gaming world, some people enjoy watching people playing games and vice versa. That is why live streaming platforms for gaming are so popular. The most popular game streaming platform is Twitch (Mohanty 2019).

Despite making money from playing games all day and live-streaming, some people have truly found happiness and joy through the live-streaming app, Twitch, such as this Reddit user 'lilkhaleesi'.

Personally, my experience with gaming has been more affirmative than negative, particularly due to the social aspect of playing video games. When the world went into lockdown and staying at home was mandatory, I turned to video games as a temporary solution to interact with my friends who also played the same games as me. I also watched a lot of gamers live stream on Twitch as it it is entertaining to me. Gaming with friends and watching other gamers play and live stream certainly increased my social and mental health and wellbeing as I was not only communicating with friends through my gaming mic, but gaming also distracted from all the negativity going around in the world.

The toxic side of gaming...

Gaming and its link to poor health and mental health:

According to The World Health Organization (WHO), there are deadly disadvantages to playing video games.

Negatives to gaming include:

Behavioural and mental changes: Children who spend hours gaming may become violent, introverted and unsocial in the real world.

Ignoring or not prioritising responsibilities or interests over game time

Continuing to play games despite the negative impact it may have

Difficulty sleeping or changes in sleep patterns

Declining grades or difficulty in school

Can lead to social isolation

Poor time management skills

Weight gain, a result of gamers lethargic nature and spending too much time sitting and gaming.

Lack of other hobbies and poor academic performance. Although gaming is a hobby, spending too much time playing video games will deprive people of learning new things and playing outside. They can also get into a habit of sacrificing other things that are sometimes more important than gaming, like studying, playing sports, socialising, etc.

Addiction; is a huge one that I am guilty of myself. Gaming addiction can slow down brain growth and can negatively affect eyesight and result in Insomnia in bad cases. These are all results from playing video games for hours every day...

Addiction has numerous forms, gaming is not the only one. Addiction can also be the overconsumption of social media. The disadvantages of video gaming can easily be defeated if we teach ourselves and others moderation and the importance of other things in life.

On the Good Morning show, one parent spoke of their child becoming more aggressive and socializing less as they played more. ("15 biggest Fortnite controversies that shocked players (maybe)", 2018)

Digga Deeps

I really like the lights aisle at B&Q. The way that amongst paint rollers and grouting it stands there glistening like some beacon is mesmerising. I may be a moth.

Something I always manage to wonder when I see these aisles (Before my pupils fully dilate) is what the financial and climate cost of keeping this kit all day is? As the endorphins mass in my brain am I effectively punching a baby polar bear in the head? Will Dave Att turn up with a film crew and facetiously commentate over me as I float towards the lights like a Disney character that’s smelt a nice window-ledged pie? Regardless, it’s the brighter the better for me and as I stand there like something out of a dystopian film absorbing electric light. Offer me an energy saving bulb and you’ll end up chewing it.

I do the same in the sun. Georgie calls me a lizard because they sit there still in the warmth, heating their cold blood. I act like a particularly cold-blooded and maybe cold hearted reptile, leaning my head back and closing my eyes to greedily absorb any vitamin D going spare. If they made a reptile Christmas Carol I could be a character adviser for whatever poor slowworm they got to play Ebenezer Scrooge.

That said, my one true love has always been electric light. Apparently it was one of my first words- no, really. Mum reckons she once closed the curtains and I proclaimed ‘digga-da!’ which she and dad both swear sounded exactly as though I was trying to wrap my dumb baby chops around the word ‘electric light’. Some of my strongest childhood memories are of gloomy days lit up by lights, so it fits. I made many visits to my grandma with her dimmer switches to change the atmosphere in the room and a cabinet of ornaments lit up by a lovely warm light and then used to peer round the corner of the spare room door at my dad miserably incubating himself next to a SAD light every February. Even when I went to the Tate last year one of my favourite pictures, Matisse’s Snail, was trumped by an installation of messages punched out in the form of LED light.

My addiction is obvious all the time. I revel in cloudy days when I can turn on a desk lamp at work or the lettered light box when working from home, the screaming tunnels of the Tube are even bearable if the carriage has a couple of lights on the blink giving an interesting light pattern, if I have few brewskis and I’ll be drawn to whichever takeaway that is competing in the oh so competitive 1am market and at a festival I’m probably alright without that washing powder/arsenic/ceramics dust ‘E’ so long as you put me near a flashy screen. Guy Fawkes Night is frankly an orgy.

I think the reason I like the light so much though is just because I’m so scared of the dark. I really hate the dark - not some Facebook mum reason and certainly not ‘the darkies’ like some army colonel. It makes me feel at once small and also interconnected with the world, in a way that makes me compare myself and feel inadequate. When we’re in November and it’s dark by about 15:00 I’ll be staring at my screen not letting it in, like some minecraft kid terrified of Herobrine or a computer science student is of a social gathering. The way to brace against this all encompassing darkness as I leave the office* is normally to wrap up in my coat and look up to see the electric light pouring out of the other hamster wheels. The contrast of light against dark is one reason why I love Original Pirate Material so much.

I realise I may sound like @ NugsBunny or some such sad sack but as we come round to winter and I start to get sad and shrink back into my Hermit Crab shell, the one thing I’m excited for is to plonk down in my joggers next to a lamp and decide which form of light I’d like for the evening. I get to hide away with my phone (on day mode, of course) and G watching the brightly flashing TV.

To a normal brain this will, I understand, sound totally Gwen Stefani** but to me it’s all pervading. Same with rain. I remember once walking up a set of outside stairs on the way to collect a prescription in the driving rain. I walked up Keighton Hill from my uni lecture and I remember being so angry and sad, nearly washed away by a torrent of water. All around me was grey, clouds sat on top of me, a flash of lightning in the background and I was absolutely soaked to the bone. I called someone to loudly complain (as if they were the Met Office) that today had meant to be at most a tiny bit of drizzle. ‘But it is only drizzle in Nottingham’. Same person, a few months later. It’s early December about 16:50 and I‘ve bussed it back from Uni, about to head into Saino’z: ‘Christ what a long day it’s been- about time for some dinner and then off to bed’ I say. The reply wasn’t too impressed. Turns out I don’t process the dark and cold in a normal way. Final proof of that was a note I wrote at Idles last year. I was freezing cold and people, caring, asked why. All I could think was because I’d come from somewhere dark and cold- inside my head. Weird what the lack of a wind up torch can do to people.

*maybe this year I’ll find safety in putting on The Chase?
