For us, that is qualitative data that we turn into quantitative data.” And from Van-Sharp: “My job is to be at the subculture, take that information and translate that into real strategy.” And from Gyasi: “We have to see the nuances: what people are talking about, what they care about, what’s relevant to them.” Even their titles are infuriatingly vague. What’s the difference between a business strategist (Peters), a business adviser (Van-Sharp) and a business developer (Gyasi)? How are they getting paid hundreds of dollars an hour to hang out at clubs and attend art openings? The reason is a shift in the kind of information brands find valuable. The past decade-plus in marketing was defined by data -- search results, social media shares, highly trackable online behavior -- that promised to both assess and predict consumer behavior. But hard numbers, it turned out, couldn’t provide all the answers. “I’ve watched the pendulum swing from cool hunting to big data, and now it’s moving back,” says Jake Katz, a longtime trend researcher for outfits like NBCUniversal and MTV, and the current VP of insights and strategy at Revolt Media & TV. He says brands are displaying more “cultural curiosity” these days. The role of business is to make a world a better place and that starts with building one that doesn't look to just sell merch and market selfies but rather go beyond and offer Love and tell Love stories. We must look at people as people with genuine emotions and mindsets, not as data sets and broad demographics. Human beings are powered by emotion, not by reason. Study after study has proven that if the emotion centers of our brain are damaged in some way, we don’t just lose the ability to laugh or cry, we lose the ability to make decisions. So we need to focus on creating genuine connections with people by relating to their emotions not to reasoning of 7.99 and 20% off (and that people are dumb) tactics. Love creates for a brand loyalty beyond reason within the mind of people. Love creates movements and every brand today to survive must start a movement aka a built in marketplace where the community themselves can exchange value with each other beyond you. Creating a brand is about the ability to understand people’s dreams, to know what they want and when they want it and to create great experiences that make your brand a part of their lives. Brand must create a love affair with people. Creating a brand is about having a genuine attitude and philosophy that people can believe in and if that attitude inspires love. Voila. By building respect and inspiring love, business can move the world. If you create loyalty first and offer genuine value at the product, messaging and cultural level, and you commit for the long-term, the money will eventually print itself. We must ask. When people think about you do they feel love or nothing? Do you have the guts and patience to inspire love? A few notes on creativity, commerce, design, working past myths and doubts, breaking rules, ego, and some other musings on brand greatness from WÜLF UNIVERSITY and MYÜBERLIFE. 1. It’s only selling out if you get a bunch of money. 2. Only for the phony is commercialism-the bending of creativity to common utility-a naughty word. To the truly creative, it is a bridge to the great audience, a means of sharing rather than debasing. 3. You dont win a noble prize by doing as your told. Excellence disobedience for the benefit of society. 4. Innovation— any new idea—by definition will not be accepted at first. It takes repeated attempts, endless demonstrations, monotonous rehearsals before innovation can be accepted and internalized by an organization. This requires courageous patience. 5. It isn't the incompetent who destroy an organization. The incompetent never get in a position to destroy it. It is those who achieved something and want to rest upon their achievements who are forever clogging things up. 6. Too much of our work amounts to the drudgery of arranging means toward ends, mechanically placing the right foot in front of the left and the left in front of the right, moving down narrow corridors toward narrow goals. Play widens the halls. Work will always be with us, and many works are worthy. But the worthiest works of all often reflect an artful creativity that looks more like play than work. 7. Innovation— any new idea—by definition will not be accepted at first. It takes repeated attempts, endless demonstrations, monotonous rehearsals before innovation can be accepted and internalized by an organization. This requires courageous patience. 8. Design is in everything you make, but it's also between those things. It's a mix of craft, science, storytelling, propaganda, and philosophy. Anyone who minimizes the importance of success to your future has given up on his or her own chances of accomplishment and is spending his or her life trying to convince others to do the same. Don't listen. 5. The moment you start thinking someone else's gain is your loss, you limit yourself by thinking in terms of competition and shortages. 6. Criticism precedes admiration and—like it or not—goes hand in hand with success. 7. Don't be confused by what looks like luck to you. Lucky people don't make successful people; people who completely commit themselves to success seem to get lucky in life. 8. Realistic thinking is based on what others think is possible—but they are not you and have no way of knowing your potential and purposes. 9. This is the problem with many members of the middle class. They go after what they've deemed necessary rather than ever going really big. 10. You have to approach the notion of success the way good parents approach their duty to their children; it's an honor, an obligation, and a priority. 11. I love the feeling that comes with being obsessed about an idea, and I admire seeing others who are that fanatical. 12. The goal has to be more valuable than the risk—or you have determined the wrong target. 13.
