Round 3, Poll 7
Japanese Paradise Flycatcher vs Pink-necked Green Pigeon

Japanese Paradise Flycatcher
"Look at it! It's even got eyeliner! It's so fabulous."
Their habitat is described as: "shady mature deciduous or mixed forest and plantations on low hills and mountains, but prefers wooded valleys with streams at lower elevations in Central Japan; in Southern Japan also in broadleaf evergreen forest." - BoW
Pink-necked Green Pigeon
"pretty :)"; "sherbert colored bird, what a baby"
A very common bird in across many of the SE Asian countries and islands. It can be found in a variety of habitats as well as urban areas.
This species is known to fly long distances between islands when searching for new habitat, even though it is typically a residential species. After the Krakatau island underwent its cataclysmic eruption in 1883, the Pink-necked Green-Pigeon was one of the first species to recolonize, recorded in 1908. As a fig specialist, it's likely that this birds droppings helped to reseed the island.

Animal of the Day!
Asian Golden Weaver (Ploceus hypoxanthus)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Near Threatened
Habitat- Indonesia
Size (Weight/Length)- 22 cm
Diet- Seeds; Insects
Cool Facts- Well known for their brilliant yellow feathers, Asian golden weavers are a type of finch that take nest building to the next level. These tiny weaver birds mate for life, living in small colonies of monogamous pairs. The pair work together to gather bits of grass and palm leaves. These leaves are then weaved together using reeds or trees as a base. The nest is then built to hang down from the tree to form a ball shape with a singular opening. Despite being up to 2 meters above the ground, these nests are able to withstand harsh wind and rain. Up to three eggs are laid in which the mother is in charge of feeding the chicks and the father is in charge of feeding the mother.
Rating- 12/10 (Finally. Affordable housing.)

Round 2, Poll 9
Lady Amherst's Pheasant vs Japanese Paradise Flycatcher
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sources under cut
Lady Amherst's Pheasant
"it has AMAZING feathers and is very very pretty"
While the data is scant, there are reports that this species is a clinal migrant and lives in high altitudes in the summer and the foothills in winter, or during severe weather. Their typical range is within southwestern China and northern Myanmar.
They get their name from their English introduction by Lady Amherst to her estates, near the Duke of Bedford's Woburn Abbey. While feral populations are believed to be extinct, two have been sighted or photographed in recent years- Staplegrove, Taunton (2020) and Scotland (2021).

Streaked Spiderhunter (Arachnothera magna):
Judgement from above. STSP makes no pretenses. This beady-eyed judgment fills the North Eastern Indian Subcontinent, plucking spiders from webs, and nectar from banana flowers (other flowers are also indulged upon).
Tumblr media
STSP is also a noted seamstress, threading together leaves and other nesting material to form hanging nests:
Tumblr media
Granted, the nest depicted above is still a work in progress... You'll have to take my word on the fact that the nests do finish construction and obtain a semblance of nest-itude. Beware, STSP's judgement is plentiful as it is of "least concern" (Cheke and Mann 2020).
Vocalisation:
STSP's vocalisations are described as follow: a song of accelerating "vijvitte vij". Calls sounding like "chittit" grouped and singular. Along with a soft annoyance call of "ug-ug-ug" which I find quite endearing (Cheke and Mann 2020).
