Song Review: Circles around the Sun - “Babyman” (Live, Sept. 18, 2021)
If someone said Circles around the Sun’s live version of “Babyman” was instead an instrumental Steely Dan demo from the Gaucho sessions, it would be utterly believable.
Recorded Sept. 18, 2021, at Red Rocks and just released, the performance carries a heavy waning-disco, jazz-funk vibe with keyboardist Adam MacDougall and the rhythm section of bassist Dan Horne and drummer Mark Levy channeling the late-Dan era. Only guitarist John Lee Shannon is un-Steely. But our fake music purveyor could just as easily say this was a placeholder until the session cat arrived to lay down his part.
In any event, “Babyman” is a CATS number. And this rendition - while pale up against anything from Interludes for the Dead - is swirly enough to justify the band’s continued, post-Neal Casal orbiting.

Mikaela Davis & Circles Around the Sun — After Sunrise (Kill Rock Stars/Jealous Butcher)
Tumblr media
The Grateful Dead cast a long shadow over this free-jamming, fusion-funk collaboration, which sprinkles sparkly harp dust over 1970s synth boogie. Harpist Mikaela Davis is likely best known for her work with Bob Weir. She has also played with Bon Iver and the Punch Brothers and made this lovely alt-country solo album. For its part, Circles Around the Sun came into being when guitarist Neal Casal needed an instrumental band to play incidental music for the Dead-celebrating Fare Thee Well concerts in 2015. Casal died in 2019; John Lee Shannon now plays guitar, while Justin Kreutzmann (son of the Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann) is on drums.
Given those extensive links, you might expect After Sunrise to lean into a hippie folk good time groove, but while the vibes are sunny, the sounds tap into Tangerine Dream-ish synth prog. “Gloaming Way” starts in pristine, pretty harp figures, a sun-dappled, folk-rooted reverie. However, it’s only about a minute before the aesthetic shifts, a 1970s boogie arising from syncopated guitar and harp, laid atop big blasts of synth. It’s a percolating mix, expertly played but resembling sitcom sound-trackery. “Moonbow” likewise dusts blurting funk with trebly harp star dust, an uneasy meld of porno-thrust and dream sequence. If you like Stanley Clarke’s gleaming, futuristic funk or Emerson Lake & Palmer’s technologically enabled arena rock, you might enjoy this. It’s a little too clean and muzaak-y for me.
The set closes with a long, live performance of “Language,” the title track from Circles Around the Sun’s fourth full-length, which gives you a sense for this band’s loose, vibe-y conjunction of disco groove and intergalactic riot. Davis’ harp careens over pop-locked syncopation, leaving cascading trails of silver on surreal washes of tone. It sure doesn’t sound like the Grateful Dead, more like an instrumental Earth Wind and Fire or “The Hustle” on a lot of acid. Not my bag, but maybe yours.

Circles Around the Sun is an instrumental band initially formed to create incidental music for 2015's Fare Thee Well concerts by surviving members of the Grateful Dead. The character of that music reflected the Dead's spacy, grooving feel. Following that project, guitarist Neal Casal, bassist Dan Horne, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, and drummer Mark Levy issued INTERLUDES FROM THE DEAD from those gigs and toured. The positive response motivated them to release follow-up LET IT WANDER in 2018, a less structured meld of jazz-funk, fusion, and R&B. After completing the MEETS JOE RUSSO EP and a third album in 2019, Casal [died by] suicide. He left his bandmates a note telling them to continue. They issued the third album as Circles Around the Sun and toured with a rotating cast of guitarists; they eventually asked New York's John Lee Shannon to join permanently.

Read the full article

Things To Do: Circles Around The Sun At Last Concert Cafe
Things To Do: Circles Around The Sun At Last Concert Cafe
There are few to no bands who have had the unexpected career trajectory of Circles Around The Sun. What began as pre-recorded intermission music for The Grateful Dead’s Fare Thee Well tour in 2015 with original songs written by the late guitarist Neal Casal blossomed into a band with a cult following and four albums with one more on the way. Circles Around The Sun will perform in Houston on…

Circles around the Sun and Mikaela Davis & Southern Star at Skully’s Music-Diner, Columbus, Ohio, March 20, 2024
Mikaela Davis wasn’t the headliner, but she was the star of the show.
The harpist and her band, Southern Star, opened for and sat in with Circles around the Sun at their March 20 gig inside Columbus, Ohio’s, Skully’s Music-Diner. And it was Davis who shone brightest on the darkened stage and who received the most enthusiastic response from the 150 or so mid-week concertgoers.
Having begun life as the Neal Casal-led studio outfit that recorded the PA music for the 2015 reunion of living Grateful Dead members known as Fare Thee Well, CATS weathered Casal’s 2019 suicide, finally settling on John Lee Shannon as the guitarist who would replace the irreplaceable and play and record alongside co-founding members keyboardist Adam MacDougall, bassist Dan Horne and drummer Mark Levy. More ethereal disco than Dead- and jam-oriented as they were in the beginning, the modern CATS is no longer the singular band it was. It is instead part of the larger space-trance genre. MacDougall’s white jacket and his and Shannon’s white loafers added to the leisure-suit-era feel of the gig.
With seven disco balls - four above the stage and three over the audience - Skully’s was decked out appropriately for such a vibe as Davis & Southern Star took the stage.
Seated at her classical instrument with her lime-green shoes cutting through the dim lights spinning off the mirrored orbs, Davis led the band through note-perfect renderings of songs from 2023’s And Southern Star. Drummer Alex Coté, bassist Shane McCarthy, Kurt Johnson on pedal steel and electric guitars and loops and Cian McCarthy on acoustic and electric guitars and saxophone spent 55 minutes running through such tracks as “Far from You,” “Cinderella” and “Leave it Alone” and in doing so continued carving out a place for their unique brand of orchestral, space-country music, reinforced by Johnson and Cian McCarthy’s overalls, where Davis’ harp serves as both lead and rhythm instrument as would keyboards in a more-mainstream act.
One such act is the 2024 edition of CATS, where MacDougall’s multiple sets of keys and electronic percussion drive the band’s dance music with programmed rhythm augmenting Levy’s four-on-the-floor drums, Horne’s chest-rattling bass and Shannon’s rhythm and occasional lead playing on such numbers as “Away Team,” “Outer Boroughs” and “Scarlotta’s Magnolias,” all of which eat up more than 10 of the band’s 90 minutes of stage time.
Undeniable musical chops notwithstanding, the contemporary CATS lacks the transcendence of the Casal era and have replaced it with mere fun. What was once an uninterrupted live-music journey is now a scattering of interesting moments.
Davis retuned to the stage to add harp and wordless vocals - a first for the all-instrumental CATS - to the title track and other cuts from the forthcoming After Sunrise joint EP from the touring partners. Though Davis’ presence reined in Circles’ orbit, it also steadied their wobble for the homestretch.
