Why Princess Anne will be the King’s bedrock of support
The royal world has changed once again – but the industrious Princess Royal will keep the show on the road
By Camilla Tominey for the Daily Telegraph
Over the years, she has tumbled down the line of succession to a lowly 17th place in the Windsor pecking order.
On paper, the Princess Royal may not be the most prominent royal, lagging well behind her nephew Prince Harry and her brother the Duke of York – even though they are no longer “working” royals.
But when it comes to putting in the hours on behalf of the family Firm, few could dispute Princess Anne’s status as one of the King’s most stalwart supporters.
As the 75-year-old monarch on Monday began what Buckingham Palace has described as a “schedule of regular treatments” following his cancer diagnosis, his 73-year-old sister was the first to ride to the royal rescue.
With typical gusto, the grandmother-of-five put her best foot forward to carry out an investiture at Windsor Castle at 11am on Tuesday, before turning her attention to three further royal engagements.
After handing out gongs to the likes of media doyenne Elisabeth Murdoch, conductor Ivor Bolton, tenor Nicky Spence and wheelchair rugby league player James Simpson, the Princess made her way up to the Midlands for yet more pressing of the flesh.
Tumblr media
On Tuesday afternoon, she was due to visit Nottingham West Primary Care Network at Eastwood Primary Care Centre in her capacity as patron of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, as well as popping in on woolmaker GH Hurt and Son.
She then plans to travel the 128 miles back to London to present The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering at the Science Museum.
Although the jobs will have been in the royal diary for months, they reiterate the importance of the Princess’s role as the Royal family’s resident trooper.
Last year, she was once again crowned the hardest-working royal, clocking up an impressive 457 engagements, 32 more than the 425 carried out by the King.
Not that there is any sibling rivalry between the pair. Although they used to “fight like cats and dogs” when they were little, according to Ingrid Seward, the veteran royal author and commentator: “Charles and Anne’s relationship is very good now.
“They have a great mutual respect. Before the prospect of Charles marrying Camilla became a possibility, the late Queen always thought it would be Anne at Charles’s side, acting as a sort of incognito Queen. Elizabeth II always had that vision – that Anne would play a hugely significant supporting role.”
Her bond with the King was plain to see during their mother’s funeral, when the Princess was the only woman to join the solemn march behind the coffin for the procession to Westminster Abbey.
As her brother’s eyes threatened to overflow with tears, his characteristically calm and collected sister looked him straight in the eye with a silent show of support.
Tumblr media
In her 2022 book The Palace Papers, the journalist Tina Brown even went so far as to suggest that “there are plenty in palace circles who believe she is the best king we will never have”.
Stalwart, straightforward and surprisingly down to earth (despite being an unapologetic stickler for royal protocol), the Princess’s popularity within the household and beyond has been built on her reputation for getting on with it with little fuss or fanfare.
As Valentine Low explained in his 2022 book, Courtiers: “That was Harry and Meghan’s downfall – there was too much ego. Anne has no ego. She recognises that this is the job, and you just get on with it.”
It is a testament to the Princess’s work ethic that Buckingham Palace has stressed that the King will not need to use counsellors of state – royals authorised to carry out the monarch’s official duties should they be incapacitated or overseas.
Historically, they are the sovereign’s spouse and the next four people in the line of succession who are over the age of 21. Until recently, the King’s were Queen Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and Princess Beatrice.
Amid concern that Princes Harry and Andrew no longer undertake official royal duties and that the former does not even live in the country, a change was made to the Regency Act of 1937 to include the Princess along with her youngest brother, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh.
Both will be expected to increase their workload in light of the King’s cancer diagnosis, which has forced him to cancel all forward-facing public engagements to minimise any health risks.
As heir to the throne, the Prince of Wales will also undertake royal engagements on behalf of his father along with the Queen.
Yet with the Princess of Wales also out of action until after Easter after undergoing abdominal surgery, the monarchy has never looked more “slimmed down”.
Naturally Anne was one of the first to identify the potential pitfalls of stripping back the number of “working” royals.
“Well, I think the ‘slimmed-down’ [monarchy] was said in a day when there were a few more people around to make that seem like a justifiable comment,” she said in an interview last year.
When it was put to her that the world changes, she added: “It changes a bit. I mean, it doesn’t sound like a good idea from where I’m standing, I have to say. I’m not quite sure what else, you know, we can do.”
The royal world has changed once again – and as ever, industrious Princess Anne is front and centre of efforts to keep the show on the road.

When you accidentally discover that an actor whose career you've been following for years — no, decades — has a whole other career thread about which you knew absolutely nothing:
OperaWire is a news website covering opera, as you might guess, and the classical music world generally. Many of the writers seem to have something less than a firm grasp of written English (that's the most polite way that I can put it while still explaining how it is) and, this being the Internet, there's no editing going on. (I mean, if you're going to announce an event at Mandel Hall, why not go the extra inch also mention that Mandel Hall is in Chicago?) Nevertheless, I find it worth reading.
Anyway, there's a weekly feature highlighting new CD and DVD releases, and I got quite a surprise from the latest:
Look at the second entry, Folk Songs of the British Isles. I was pleased to see Elaine Delmar, a distinguished jazz vocalist whom I saw in the original cast of Cowardy Custard at the Mermaid Theatre in 1972. (She must be quite well-stricken in years by now.) I was less please to see the over-hyped (imho) Nicky Spence, although he's probably the reason this disc is included here. And then I got to the second line of text and saw — what? Surely that must be an entirely different Kevin Whately?
Well, no. Apparently it isn't.
Who knew?

Who is Nicky Spence? Everything you need to know about the Scottish tenor, including his best recordings
The winner of the 2022 BBC Music Magazine Personality of the Year award is well-known for his charisma and vocal stature
Tumblr media
Who is Nicky Spence?
Nicky Spence is a Scottish operatic tenor known for his vocal and physical stature (right down to his Size 12 feet), his velvety vocal timbre, his open-minded approach to repertoire, and his charisma – qualities that won the 38-year-old singer the 2022 BBC Music Magazine Personality of the Year award.
Where does Nicky Spence come from?
Dumfries, near the Scottish Borders, where he grew up on a farm. He is still a supporter of the town's football team, Queen of the South ('The Doonhamers'), who currently play in Scottish League One.
How old is Nicky Spence?
Nicky Spence was born in 1983.
Is Nicky Spence married?
Nicky Spence is married to his accompanist Dylan Perez.
How did Nicky Spence get into music?
Although Spence originally wanted to play the trumpet - and briefly took it up as a child - his family could not afford to pay for lessons. Luckily a music teacher at his school spotted his talent for singing, which went on to win him the Dumfries and Galloway Young Musician of the Year Award when he was 14, as well as a place in the Scottish Youth Theatre and National Youth Music Theatre.
When did opera enter the picture?
After a neighbour offered the 15-year-old Spence a spare ticket for Mozart's The Magic Flute. He was hooked.
Where did he study?
At the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where, during his final year, he got his first big break, receiving a five-record contract with Universal Classics. Within the space of just a couple of years, he released his first album (My First Love), was nominated for the 'Young British Classical Performer of the Year' Classical Brit Award, and toured with Katherine Jenkins and Shirley Bassey. He has said that he owes more to Tom Jones than to Pavarotti in finding his voice. Yet, when the time came to record his second album, Spence turned his back on the £1m contract, choosing instead to return to full-time study at the Guildhall to focus on opera.
And since then?
He has sung in opera houses and concert halls all over the world, with regular appearances at the Royal Opera House and English National Opera. Admitting that he has an aversion to the 'rum-ti-tum' operas of Donizetti and the 'sillier' side of Verdi, Spence has specialised in complex, truthful roles, frequently taking on repertoire by the Czech composers Leoš Janáček and Antonín Dvořák. He also has an affinity for Wagner, having appeared in The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Der fliegende Holländer, Tristan und Isolde and Das Rheingold – and has sung a good deal of 20th century repertoire. But he still casts his net beyond classical music, freely professing his love of musicals and often embracing the sounds of Broadway in his work.
Anything else I should know about Nicky Spence?
Even by A-list singer standards, Spence has a particular talent for keeping busy. Last winter he was one of three mentors appearing on Anyone Can Sing, a TV series in which six would-be singers were given guidance by expert vocalists. During the pandemic he made every minute count, jabbing over 100 people every day as a volunteer in a vaccination clinic.

Video
youtube
From YouTube user De Todo comes this recording (audio only) of Alban Berg’s Lulu in English translation at the English National Opera. Cast details from the YouTube page:
Lulu : Brenda Rae Gräfin Geschwitz : Sarah Connolly Alwa : Nicky Spence Dr. Schön : James Morris Der Mahler : Michael Colvin Der Prinz : Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts Schigolch : Willard White Der Marquis : Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts Eine Fünfzehnjährige : Sarah Labiner Ihre Mutter : Rebecca de Pont Davies Der Medizinalrat : ? Der Theaterdirektor : Graeme Danby Eine Theater-Garderobiere : Clare Presland Der Bankier : Graeme Danby Ein Gymnasiast : Clare Presland Der Kammerdiener : Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts Der Polizeikommissar : ? Ein Tierbändiger : David Soar Jack : James Morris
I found this production riveting when I saw it in London last November. You miss a lot by not being able to see the stage action and William Kentridge’s designs but it’s still a good listen, especially if you know the story (perhaps from seeing the Met HD of the same production in New York). The show is well cast across the board but for me the highlights are Brenda Rae’s Lulu (whose erratic behavior always seemed to me to be driven by a strong instinct for survival) and Sarah Connolly’s Geschwitz (tender, innocent, heartbreaking).
Don’t plan on this video sticking around for very long.

@diversestimulation liked for a starter.
Being called together again was always a little strange--she always took her little leaves from the group, going out onto her ship. And yet she always looked forward to it, especially as she tied her ship down, just making sure no one could steal it. Sure, there were little updates to it here and there, but it was a classic. And it was her’s. She still smelt like the sea when she made it into the house, hugging Nicky and Joe, then seeing Spencer over their shoulder. A little stunned at the sight of him before pulling away and taking a few steps closer to him, “Hey Spence, long time no see.”
