My wife's book club is reading this for their next discussion and listening to it on Audible, I keep thinking of how Ex Machina is a great companion film for it.

Three ships I like right now: AH my aro brain doesn't think about ships a lot but maybe sastiel (it's so intriguing) but also thinking a lot about sam & amelia's brief relationship and loving them <3 (I can't think of a third)
First Ship: oh man it was either harry and ginny or percy and annabeth (idk if they count because they're both from like 3rd grade LMAO but they were my first encounter with romance in fiction I suppose)
Last song I listened to: Stay Down by boygenius :)
Favorite childhood book: The Keeper of the Lost Cities series had me in a CHOKEHOLD as a child I loved those like nothing else
Currently reading: Lilith by Nikki Marmery (I fucking love myth retellings)
Currently watching: the second season of Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy hehe he's such a guy
Currently consuming: I just had some chocolate as a pick-me-up after a doctor's appointment :)
Currently craving: ooh popcorn or smth salty like that I think

So I get to read certain books before they get published as part of my job, and I just finished this genuinely amazing radical feminist book. It’s a fictional account of several stories from the Torah told from Lilith’s perspective, and each of them emphasize how men have used male-dominated religions to oppress women.
Is it a technically great book? It’s pretty good—not great, but the feminist theory is really the main appeal of the story (and I think the author knows it). Anyway, it’s called “Lilith” by Nikki Marmery and it’s out October 17th!!! Here’s some quotes I really liked:

LILITH
By Nikki Marmery
📖 BOOK REVIEW:
Tumblr media
Amazing new release! Beautifully divine.
A triumphantly feminist retelling of ancient creation myths in the tradition of Madeline Miller and Claire North. Lyrically rendered, this epic U.S. debut tells the story of the woman known as Adam's first wife and her fall from Paradise and quest for revenge.
Before Eve, there was Lilith. Lilith and Adam are equal and happy in the Garden of Eden. Until Adam decides Lilith should submit to his will and lie beneath him. She refuses and is banished forever from Paradise.
Demonized and sidelined, Lilith watches in fury as God creates Eve, the woman who accepts her submission. But Lilith has a secret: she has already tasted the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Endowed with Wisdom, she knows why Asherah, God's wife and equal, the Queen of Heaven is missing. Lilith has a plan: she will rescue Eve, find Asherah, restore balance to the world, and regain her rightful place in Paradise.
If this is not the best book of 2023, I don't know what is. A bold retelling of our origin story. Lilith's story is finally told and finally heard!

Last to Leave the Room Science Fiction | Ihr letztes Buch, The Death of Jane Lawrence, fand ich so gut, dass ich mich riesig über etwas Neues von Caitlin Starling freue.

april reading wrap up
1. binding 13, chloe walsh - THIS is my guilty pleasure.. ohhh this is like if normal people was less well written litfic and more in line with sappy trashy romance novels. BUT GOOD. oh it reminds me of like a good quotev story. which is like wattpad for emo middle schoolers
2. the prisoner’s throne, holly black - MASSIVE disappointment, but now that i think about it, idk why i was so let down. i didnt care for the three cruel prince books but i did really like stolen heir which made me excited for this. but this follows a different characters pov and was just a big downgrade from stolen heir. i wont read any more holly black going forward.
3. the boy who was raised as a dog, bruce perry, md, phd - preferred this one over the body keeps the score. i cried three separate times.
4. the salt grows heavy, cassandra khaw - cute and eerie!! save this one for october.
5. the god of endings, jacqueline holland - also cute! i dont know why i read all these spooky adjacent books in the middle of spring but i digress
6. lilith, nikki marmery - i thought id really like this but the writing style and characterizations felt too modern and tongue in cheek for the content itself. might have served better if reworked as an original story as opposed to a retelling but what do i know
7. clytemnestra, costanza casati - this is like circe x 10000000 oh madeline miller WISHES she couldve written this.. this is such a good retelling. maybe im biased because i just love the atreus family and the orestia and everything but content aside the writing was really magnificent
8. keeping 13, chloe walsh - MWAHHHHH AHHHH RAHHH GAHHHH
9. monstrilio, gerardo sámano córdova - the first three fourths were very good but the last act just lost me! another eerie sort of monster book with a maternal lens. good concept and good execution even, i just felt like the ending fell flat and getting thru it was a chore
10. shatter me, tahereh mafi - i dont know why i bother with the booktok book recommendations anymore. this was PISS POOR. and i think theres like eight of these books. oh you couldnt PAY me to read the rest.
11. butcher & blackbird, brynne weaver - EVEN WORSE
12. thirst, marina yuszczuk - if i had one quarter for every monster aligned book with themes of motherhood i read in april then i would have one whole dollar!
13. stone blind, natalie haynes - was scared because this was like my third retelling of the month and i was nervy. it couldve gone lilith bad or clytmenestra good and it was GREAT!!! im so pleased with this and all the perspectives and everything was done so well and right. everything was so lyrical and smart.
wowwww im so proud of my month!!!!!!!! :)
