that episode of tlou was so. um. there will be violent men in your family and your relationships and your life depend on whether they are the kind of men who turn that violence inward on the family unit or outward on others who seek to attack it... but either way there will be men (fathers) in your life attempting to use violence to control some aspect of it. like I get it and I sort of see the vision and the relationship between Joel and Ellie does feel very unique and special and delicious. and it's very if you grow up with a violent man in your house there will always be a violent man in your house. but it's also very women and especially young girls can only have two types of relationships with men and either one will involve violence so choose wisely :)

was trying to work out why heathers, deathless, gone girl, medea all had such an enormous impact on me as a teenager. at the time I was very, very angry about sexism all the time, and I was/am also attracted to men, and I was surrounded by boys who were indifferent to or antagonistic about my rants about the patriarchy, but I was still attracted to them (which was very complicated for my sense of shame and sexuality etc). so this fantasy of playing out misogyny on a small, personal scale - being seduced by a man, being happy with him, his betrayal, and then completely badass revenge arc where our heroine is in complete control - that was sooo attractive to me. the specific power reversal, coupled with very real attraction - I think it's important that all of the men in these stories are genuinely hot, and the romance is real, and does not necessarily end after the betrayal... like, in deathless, the feeding and sensory control scenes right after he takes her petrograd are so hot. but then it's also hot that she locks him in the basement and does the same to him! teenage me was like. eyes wide as saucers at the idea it could be both. the pivotal part of gone girl to me is when she sees that he gets it, that he's playing along, she wants to go back. because she still loves him. and I so badly wanted Veronica to just pretend she and jd both got blown up so they could run away together. that's romance lol
