the writer's commentary on the v7 blu ray confirmed that Ironwood losing his arm really is supposed to represent him losing his humanity, in case you were wondering how that was gonna shake out
Yeah. That’s just fantastic 😬
I just straight up don’t understand that interpretation. If Ironwood had let Watts fall to his death? Or teamed up with him? I 100% get how the takeaway would be, “Ironwood’s wiliness to do anything to achieve his goal has blinded him to basic human decency” because the action would have been “Kills a man when the fight was over” or “Teams up with a known bad guy.” But here the action is “Manages to free himself from a horrible trap to capture a villain, thus protecting his kingdom from further harm.” That does not demonstrate a loss of humanity. Quite the opposite, in fact.
I think RT is trying to say something like, “This scene shows that Ironwood is willing do whatever it takes to achieve his goals and so LATER he’ll inevitably do horrific things.” AKA, shooting Oscar. But that doesn’t work because you just showed us Ironwood’s restraint. He won’t kill Watts, but he’s going to kill an unarmed, untrained, allied kid? If Ironwood’s arm is representing the loss of humanity then something about the context of that scene needed to demonstrate that. There had to be a connection between the neutral act of losing his arm and the bad action. Otherwise there’s no logic, let alone good characterization. If it’s just the general concept of “Wiliness to do whatever it takes means you’re not human anymore” then Ruby isn’t human either. None of our heroes are. If Ironwood can demonstrate will by doing good (freeing himself, capturing Watts) only to turn around and shoot Oscar because that intense drive alone is damaging to one’s moral compass, then by that logic since Ruby demonstrated equal drive in an attempt to do good (warn everyone about Ironwood’s plan, take out the Ace Ops to fight Salem) then we should expect her to start murdering people to forward her own agenda. RWBY showed and RT confirmed that will alone is a dangerous thing, yet strangely enough it’s only considered dangerous in the hands of someone other than RWBYJNR.

how jaunes and tyrians semblances are  opposites meta  and a bit on their characters
miles stated jaunes  was protective and it really is given that jaunes semblance is aura amp suited for the role of support in rpg to help keep his allys safe and healed while tyrians semblance which I think is aura weakening ( the exact opposite of aura amp    and tyrian drastically weakens the aura of the places he strikes) is suited for assassinations (opposite of protective semblance ) and jaunes inspiration was joan of arc a military leader and someone who would be the target of an assassination

They have the same aura color as the god of light  who had powers over creation/life ) and dark ( who had powers over destruction/death) and this is fitting given their semblances jaunes is protective and helps heal and protect someones life by imparting his own aura on to someone  while tyrians semblance is meant to help him tear through someones  aura through aura weakening drastically weakening the aura in the places he strikes  make the person easier to kill  that’s crazy ( the god of light defeated the god of darkness
