Rules: Post your top 3 favorite facts about your top 5 favorite characters. What makes them your favorites? What is so great about them?
Tumblr media
~ Elowyn O’Toreguarde (Fighting Fantasy World of Titan)
Elo is my top fave because she's so ridiculously put-upon. She's an accidental Mary-Sue who constantly finds herself neck-deep in trouble, and half the time she's the one who put herself there! Her story arc, triumphs and tragedies were fun to play through at first, but tiring and I find she's more fun to write.
Facts about Elo:
She started out as a simple Watchman, destined to become a Detective. However, her path changed drastically, and started to hear the Call to become a Paladin.
She changed her name from Featherdown when she came of age to help her embrace her future, rather than dwelling on the past.
When Elo was blessed by the goddess Kerellim, part of her blessing was to glow when giving impassioned speeches. Both I, the player, and the GM find this hilarious; Elo does not. She finds it embarrassing, but learns to wield it as the tool the goddess intended.
~ Farren Breakwood (Fighting Fantasy World of Titan)
Farren is Elo's Watch partner, best friend, confidant and mentor. He's my second fave because he's Elo's perfect foil, and just a lovely guy to boot. He's funny, caring and wise. He's got a good line on bad jokes, his banter is en pointe, and his interactions are amazing to write. Half the time he's as bad as Elo, when it comes to getting into trouble, and half the time he's the one pulling others from the fire.
Facts about Farren:
He's amazing with kids and young adults, and always seems to know just what to say to help them through a tough time.
He's a highly skilled detective. He knows Toreguard like the back of his hand, and exactly who to talk to for the intel he needs.
He enjoys the simple things in life: A hearty bowl of stew, a slice of cake and a pint of bitter.
~ Aderyn Griffiths (TESIV: Oblivion, Modern AU)
Aderyn is fun in the same way Elo is fun. She's a moderate disaster, 80% filled with angst and trauma and pretending she isn't, and talks in a way that's really fun to write. Also "cursing like a sailor" is a defining character trait.
Facts about Aderyn:
She lives in her car, a beat up 1980's Land Rover Defender.
Part of her character voice is she cannot say "okay"; it becomes "right, yeah, sure". Did I mention she swears like a trucker?
She was hired by the Grey Fox at 17, because she broke into the wrong house.
~ Talis Omelian (TESIV: Oblivion)
So soft! So sweet! So fluffy! My most precious baby baker boi <3<3<3 He's so cute and adorable and wonderful and sunshiny, you just want to pinch his cheeks and coo. You could just eat him up, he's so adorable. ... And that entire display would have him blushing and mumbling at his feet ^.^
Facts about Talis:
He is an excellent pastry chef, who specialises in lore-friendly patisserie.
He strongly cares about people, and wants to help even though he's not a fighter or a mage or anyone important.
He leaves stale bread and unsold cakes in a barrel behind the bakery. If Mistress Embertame knows, she doesn't say anything. If Rindir ever asked, it's to keep mice out of the shop. In actuality it's for the beggars

Old Habits
Here’s that thing I said I was working on earlier today.
Just a short little piece set during an early part of Merri’s pregnancy. Some old habits developed by Yoruk are proving quite hard to break, cue Merri having a hard day at work and needing to let off some much-needed steam.
words: 1,534 so a lot shorter than most of my other uploaded works.
Warnings: Implied abuse and a fairly understandable reaction to trauma.
Meredith sighed as she got in the door and took off her cloak,
“Whit a day. I seriously thought it wasn’t gonna end.”  she groused, removing her stole from around her shoulders and placing it on a peg. Elowyn grumbled as she closed the door behind her,
“Tell me about it. I think I near enough fell asleep about four or five times during that last hour. And I’m supposed to be here to keep an eye out for those damn cultists.” Meredith gave her old friend a sympathetic smile,
“I know. Unfortunately, there’s no way tae make taxes a very exciting subject, even as important as they are.” She rubbed at her stomach with a slight smile, “It did get this wee one tae settle fer once, though.” she chuckled. The dwarven woman kicked her shoes under the bench in the little hallway and waddled through to the living room, only to stop in the doorway and placed a hand on the frame,
“Yoruk! Whit’ve I said aboot leavin’ yer sabatons and pauldrons on the couch?” she snapped. Elowyn winced at the tone, the sound making her ears ring slightly.
“Oh boy, here we go.” the woodling sighed, vaguely aware that the sounds of movement in the kitchen had stopped almost immediately. Elowyn poked her head through the doorway just as Yoruk scurried out of the kitchen, hurriedly picked up his pauldrons in one arm and his sabatons in the other and practically skittered through another door to put the items away.
“Sorry, sorry. I wanted to get dinner on the go before you got in and I figured I’d put them away a bit later and, and…” Elowyn frowned as she listened to Yoruk’s hurried and over explained apology. She’d never heard the man sound so nervous before. Meredith tensed a little beside her before breathing in through her nose and whooshing it out and approaching the skittish man. Yoruk yelped as Meredith wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him. Elowyn watched the two dwarves somewhat nervously for a moment before striding past them and into the kitchen, Aurianna winding between her legs as she walked.
Yoruk remained tense for a moment or two before leaning into the hug and resting his head on top of hers,
“‘M sorry.” he murmured. Meredith adjusted her grip and looked up at her husband,
“Look,” she sighed, “I will apologise fer snapping as I did. It’s just been a hell o’ a day.” she said, keeping her voice low and calm, “But, I am a bit irritated that ye keep leavin’ yer things on the couch, when I telt ye to take yer armour through tae the porch.” Yoruk nodded and hugged the shorted dwarf more tightly,
“I ken. I wis goin’ to shift them, but I got caught up in makin’ dinner.” he murmured sheepishly, “I’ll take my sabatons right through tae the porch tomorrow.” Meredith rested her head on the other dwarf’s chest,
“Please.” she said before finally letting go and looking up at Yoruk properly, “Go an’ calm yersel’ doon for a bit. Elo and I can finish makin’ dinner.” she told him. Yoruk frowned and looked back towards the kitchen,
“But…ye’ve been oot all day an’...” he stammered before Meredith took a hold of his hand and gently tugged him back towards her,
“Aye, but I ken fine well how tae cook and Elowyn’s right there tae help.” she told him, “Go an’ take five, ten minutes tae calm down properly.” she said a little more firmly. Yoruk took a deep, slightly shuddering breath and nodded,
“A’right. Shout if ye need anythin’.” he said, kissing Meredith’s forehead before walking out to the hall. Meredith shook her head and strode through to the kitchen where Elowyn was already stirring something bubbling in a pot over the fire,
“I think we’re having stew of some sort, going by what’s in here, but I couldn’t tell you what.” the woodling admitted. Meredith shrugged,
“Well, if it’s stew we might as well get on and make some dumpling’s to go with.” she said, rolling up the sleeves of her vestments, finding a pinnie and tying it firmly, “Auri, hen, could ye get the flour and shortening oot fer me? They’re in the top cupboard on the far wall.” The little golden cat nodded before concentrating and changing into a kitten-sized version of her normal self and flying up to the relevant cabinet. Elowyn dusted off her trousers as she stood,
“So what was all that about earlier?” she asked, grabbing an earthenware jug and pouring out some water into a nearby bowl. Meredith shook her head,
“It’s no’ really fer me tae say.” she replied, nodding her head in thanks as Aurianna placed the flour in front of her, “All I can tell ye fer now is that she did a right proper number on him growin’ up.” Elowyn nodded slowly,
"That's ok, I was just a bit worried. Is he going to be alright?" She asked. Meredith nodded, sprinkling flour over the counter and plonking a bowl on top,
"Aye, Yoruk'll be fine. He's made o' much sterner stuff than even he seems tae think." She replied, "Now, hand o'er that wooden spoon, these dumplings aren't gonna make themselves." She stated, gesturing vaguely in the direction of a large pot sitting nestled in the corner. Elowyn shook her head with an amused snort and handed the implement over, standing to one side as Meredith poured a generous amount of flour into the bowl, causing a cloud of white to half cover everyone in the immediate vicinity. Aurianna immediately polymorphed back into a cat, holding back her sneezes until she was sure she wouldn't accidentally cause any explosions. The now kitten shook off her fur,
"I think I'll go wash all this off and stay in the sitting room." She said, eyeing the flour scattered everywhere. Elowyn glanced over to Aurianna and nodded,
~Yeah, that's probably for the best Cor Cordium.~ she replied mentally, ~We'll let you know when dinner's ready.~ she added, trying and failing to hold back a giggle at the flour that had settled into Meredith's face and beard. Meredith huffed as she looked down at herself, then smirked. Elowyn squeaked as the dwarf clapped her hands together in Elowyn's direction, successfully covering the front of the woodling in the fine powder. Aurianna sauntered out of the kitchen to the sound of Elowyn protesting loudly and Meredith yelping as the woodling flicked a handful of water at her. The young dragon sighed as Yoruk entered the living room, frowning at the childish yells and amused shouts of 'oh, ye're in fer it now ye wee pest!', and shrugged,
"They're making dumplings." Was all the kitten said, shaking flour off her back legs as she walked. Yoruk arched an eyebrow and settled himself into a chair by the fire, wondering what in Moradin's name he'd managed to get into by having Elowyn and Meredith under the same roof. Utter chaos, he decided, opening a book that had been left on the table next to his chair. He smiled as he listened to the uproar of laughter floating through from the other room, at least Merri had someone she could blow off some steam with. He glanced at the floury pawprints on the carpet and flexed his hand, but instead gripped at the edge of the book with a snort,
"Nope. Ye can dae it later once the lassies have come through so they can get washed up." He muttered to himself, firmly and pointedly ignoring the itch to immediately get up and start cleaning. He looked up from his book with an amused glare when Meredith and Elowyn emerged from the kitchen ten minutes later, both of them covered in flour and bits of shortening, laughing madly.
"Had fun then you two?" He asked nonchalantly. Meredith sent him a somewhat guilty smile,
"We figured we'd sweep the floor aifter gettin' cleaned off." She said, "As fer the rest… I'm leaving a generous portion in a covered bowl fer Moiragh when she sees the state o' the kitchen in the mornin'." Yoruk shook his head, an affectionate smile gracing his features,
"Whit am I gonna dae with the pair o' ye?" He sighed, "I'll sweep up and get dinner on the table, go an' get yerselves washed off." Elowyn nodded and pulled Meredith along,
"We'll let you get on with that. Come on, Merri." The woodling encouraged as the dwarven woman opened her mouth to say something. Meredith shrugged and blew a kiss to Yoruk,
"Ta very much, fear gaolach. Love you." She called as Elowyn half-dragged the pregnant dwarf out of the living room. Yoruk caught and quashed the impulse to tut, instead opting to return the gesture and smile broadly at the retreating form of the woman he loved,
"Right then, let's hae a look at the damage." He murmured, heaving himself out of his seat and bracing himself for the carnage that had ensued in his absence.

Name Meaning Tag Game
This tag game was shamelessly stolen from olibavee. I'm going to grab a few OCs from across a range of universes.
Rules: Search and post the meaning of your OCs’ names (if you made their name up or they go by a nickname, post an explanation of how it came to you)! Bonus if you can find something for their last name too
Alexis Dalliance (FF/Titan)
"Alexis" is from the Greek name Ἄλεξις (Alexis), meaning "helper" or "defender". Apparently, this can also mean "defender of man".
"Dalliance" has no meaning as a surname, but I like to think 'Lex's mother took it for herself to show the twicelings she was an adventurer.
Asuka Rackell (The MOW Files)
"Asuka" is from the Japanese 明日 (asu) meaning "tomorrow" and 香 (ka) meaning "fragrance", or from 飛 (asu) meaning "to fly" and 鳥 (ka) meaning "bird". I prefer the latter meaning for this character.
"Rackell" has no meaning as a surname. Sadly, how I came up with this surname has been lost to time.
Elowyn O’Toreguarde (FF/Titan)
“Elowyn” or “Elowin” means “Elm” in Cornish. In French folklore, the elm is the judge or arbiter of the woods, which suits Elo’s personality.
"O’Toreguarde" is just "Of Toreguarde", aka the city she lives in, as she lost her surname when her first home was destroyed.
Farren Breakwood (FF/Titan)
"Farren" was something I made up by tacking an F on "Darren", but the internet variously thinks it means "Iron-grey colour", a diminutive form of Ferdinand ("journey ready"), "adventurous", "the land", "pilferer or ferret", or "handsome servant". For this character, "handsome ferret" works best :D
"Breakwood" has no meaning, but perhaps his distant ancestors were lumberjacks...
Gurn Tepper (The MOW Files)
"Gurn" does not exist as a name, and I do not recall how I came up with it -.-' Wikipedia suggests that to gurn is "to snarl as a dog; to look savage; to distort the countenance", so that's now what it means.
"Tepper" apparently means to be a "tavern owner", or a "wine or beer merchant".
Kathryn Scott (The Cryptid Series)
"Kathryn" (and its variant spellings) has a huge list of potential meanings. I like "each of the two" for this character.
"Scott" is quite simply "a person from Scotland"
Kellandra Rhiannon Lorinda Rue (TES: Oblivion)
"Kellandra" does not exist as a real name, though variant spellings on the internet give the meaning as "a light" or "peace-loving". This was created waaay back in my school days when I realised I needed "K'Rin" (the MC in Tusomov) to be a diminutive for something.
"Rhiannon", is apparently from the Celtic *Rīgantonā, meaning "great queen". In the original story, it was spelt Rinonn, which may have been my corruption of "Rhiannon", based on the Fleetwood Mac song.
"Lorinda" is a variant of "Laura", meaning "laurel".
"Rue" is apparently from a French word, "ruelle", meaning "lane or alley".
Sophie Aderyn Griffiths (nee Williams) (TES: Oblivion)
"Sophie" is a variant spelling, and apparently means "wisdom".
"Aderyn" is literally translated from Welsh as "bird".
"Griffiths" means "son of Gruffudd" (and "Gruffudd" means "strong prince" which I had no idea about and is hilarious in the context of the character)
"Williams" apparently means "son of William" (and "William" means "will helmet")
This was a fun exercise. Some of these names were chosen for the meanings, others because they fit the shape of the character - so the meanings of those have been a surprise!

3 questions tag!
Rules: post 3 random facts about yourself (or your book/ OCs) and send it to the last 7 blogs in your notifications Thanks for the tag @corkythewriteblr, this was a fun one :)
Elowyn O’Toreguarde actually started out life as Featherdown. In development terms, I actually borrowed her from a previous game, but didn’t like her name so I changed it. In-game, the reasons for the change is she wants to separate herself from the childish, vengeful version of herself, which is why she gets so pissy when someone deliberately deadnames her to hurt her.
Farren Breakwood was once happily married with a small child. Sadly he was widowed at 20 and lost his child when Toreguard was eaten by the Hellmouth. He helped in the final battle against the demonspawn only because, in his grief, he believed he’d be killed and would get to see his wife and daughter again.
Elrin Skyter has never actually appeared in any of my stories; and he’s never described. He’s referred to, on and off, by various characters and the reading is given the impression of a well known figure, if only for blowing himself up on the regular.
Tagging my usual, as well as the last 7 in my notifs, because spread the love: @aquadestinyswriting @viawrites-andacts @ryns-ramblings @strosmkai-rum @chauceryfairytales @morganwriteblr @writing-is-a-martial-art @undinology @writtenbyrain @eternalwritingstudent @artbyeloquent @inkflight @warriorbookworm

The OC Handwriting Tag Game
I nabbed this from @pens-swords-stuff
RULES: Some people say that a person’s handwriting can reveal a lot about who they are… So what does your OC’s handwriting say about them? Describe the handwriting of a few OCs, and tag some people!
Elowyn O’Toreguarde (FF/Titan)
Elo has terrible handwriting. It’s skittery and spidery and permanently at a slope. Even her block-caps are like this. If you’ve ever see cursive cyrillic, that’s what it looks like. It’s part of the reason Snotgrut took over her paperwork, and then insisted she hire Millicent. Her handwriting shows she’s impatient and always in a hurry.
Crispin Aveskamp (FF/Titan)
Aves has beautiful handwriting; a delightful, swooping, yet legible copperplate style. He does have an unfair advantage, being an elf, in that he’s had plenty of time to practice. This also means he has the luxury of taking his time with his reports, and shows that he genuinely enjoys the act of writing.
Aderyn (Modern Oblivion AU)
Aderyn writes by hand as little as possible. Access to computers and smartphones mean her writing is always legible. If she has to write something by hand, she always uses nearly neat block-caps. Just don’t ask her to write cursive. Like Elo, she’s impatient, and rushes because she just wants to be done and onto the next thing.
Kicks (Oblivion AU)
Kicks is probably more use to using a charcoal stick to write in elven runic*, so his Cyrodilic script tends to be blocky and angular. Despite this, it’s eminently legible. His handwriting shows he values written communication, and of taking that extra moment to ensure all is good before moving on. He’s very practical and prepared like that.
* The UESP shows Orcish as being derived from Aldmeris, so it makes sense to me that Orcs would write in an alphabet similar to Dwemer or Altmer.

49 of those oc asks for Elowyn?
Thanks for the ask, other-Elo ;)
49 Is there anyone OC used to be very close to, but no longer is?
Yes; her adopted brother, Ashbury O’Toreguarde.
Both Elowyn and Ashbury were displaced at ~age 8 by an orcish campaign that destroyed their separate villages. The two were both found wandering the Forest of Night by Oakrose (the woman they now consider their mother), and brought together where they bonded quickly and soon became inseparable.
They continued to act like twins through the events after, and up until around age 13 where their personalities became more developed and distinct. However, where Elo was consumed by a need for vengeance and devoted herself to the arts of war, Ash became more placid and drifted from interest to interest.
Elo didn’t deliberately push him away, but her driven nature (leave me alone, I’m busy!) and his passiveness (Oh, okay then...) did serve to drive a wedge between the two of them. Now, the only thing that really ties them together is their Mother.
Want to ask my OCs about their relationships? The List is here

Happy Storyteller Saturday! ❤️ How would your OCs summarize your wip, from their perspective? (Bonus: would they argue with you about what they wanted to happen?) @chauceryfairytales
Happy STS @mirror-of-too-many-books!
I’m going to take Who Watches the Watchman for this ask:
Elowyn O’Toreguarde: This is about me having a nice, normal day for once. I got caught up on my paperwork! It was glorious. Though I could have done without half of those meetings... And that thing with the Gargoyle...
Kashton Saito: So, it seemed like a normal day. And then it got weirder. And weirder. ... Those SRU folks are nuts *shakes his head* Buuuut they do have some really great stories...
Farren Breakwood, Snotgrut and Millicent Wauters: The Boss didn’t get into trouble today!  Snotgrut: She didn’t get kidnapped... Farren: No one tried to kill her... Snotgrut: Nothing magical exploded on her... Farren: She didn’t get possessed by anything... Snotgrut: She didn’t go running off into trouble by herself... Farren: She didn’t fall into any canals or get her tunic ripped... Millie: She signed off the holiday requests, prepared the rotas and she managed to check the budgets! That Kas fellow is some kind of lucky charm, and welcome back a n y t i m e.
Thanks for the ask, this was a fun one! 🍵

how do your OCs feel about where they are at in life?
Thanks for the ask Aqua.
I think I’d going to land this in the SRU days, because that seems to be mostly were I’m writing from at the moment.
Elowyn O’Toreguarde: I don’t think she’s very satisfied at all to be honest. She’s happy she’s doing Good, that she’s keep people safe etc, but her time is spent with paperwork and meetings, two things she deeply despises. Maybe it’s rose-coloured glasses, but she misses the freedom of running around the world to save people. She feels trapped by the chains of leadership, that someone has to make the Calls, and that someone has always apparently been her. I think she’ll be much happier in a few decades time, when she goes to Fangthane for her sabbatical/ consultancy period following Farren’s death. 5/10 thinks life could be better.
Farren Breakwood: I think Farren is pretty happy. He’s got a good position doing what he loves, it’s a position he’s striven for a long time to get. He’s comfortably well-off, and has a lot more time for himself. He also knows he’s slowing down, and that he’s better off in management, rather than tearing around on the streets. Again, there might be some rose-coloured glasses going on when he looks back at his early days as a Watchman. But overall, he’s got everything he wanted out of life, he’s made peace with his regrets. When he dies, he’s going to die a happy man. 7/10 pretty satisfied.
Snotgrut: ‘Grut always was good at living each day at a time, taking what satisfaction he could get, so he’s always pretty chipper. He’s lived at least treble of his life expectancy, after all. Plus, he’s still got excitement and adventure, he can still learn things, he’s gained an appreciation for high entertainment, he’s got people he can share his passions with, and good food on the table every night. What’s not to love? He’s a very happy little goblin. 10/10 very satisfied.
Millicent Wauters: Her career is pretty much just starting, and she’s landed a doozy of a job to do it with. I feel like there’s a lot of prestige that’s come from being the admin of the SRU within the Scrivener's guild. She might have naysayers saying she’s not experienced enough. But I feel like she’s taken the job by the horns, tamed, moulded it, and made it her own. She’s very happy. She’s flying high, got amazing colleagues, all the excitement she could ever want and the pay is probably pretty good. 10/10 extremely satisfied with life.
Overall, they’re all pretty happy; aside from Elo. But then, she always was a contrary, cantankerous old mare ;)
Thanks again for the ask, and I hope you liked the answer 🍵
