Toilet-bound Hanako-kun Chapter 16: The Little Mermaid (Part 1)

Previously: as one of you guys said last chapter, we “went from good boy hours to sad boy hours in a flash”, and I honestly couldn't have said it better myself. Yashiro and Kou are both very good children that just want to look after their new ghost friend (and each other) and I just（*´▽`*) love them very much. But yeah, the last chapter started with an incredibly wholesome and emotional premise and by the end that happened. I’m both excited and terrified to delve back into the story.

Now onto the next chapter!

[You can ignore this but if you’re interested, here’s a small update of where have I been lately: as I’ve mentioned before, around the moment the quarantines started to take effect where I live, I caught a cold and later I found out that I had laryngitis, so all that with the additional anxiety regarding the state the world is in right now, I really wasn’t feeling well enough to take the time to read and write the recaps for the chapters. I’m fine now, I started to feel better by last week. I’m a very anxious person by nature and while my family and friends are doing well, being quarantined this long really didn’t leave me in the best headspace since I tend to worry too much (both of my parents are over 60 years old and two of my best friends each have a family member who underwent heart surgeries recently). Also, I wasn’t sure if posting these recaps would be a good idea with everything that’s going on in the world right now. But I’ve come to the conclusion that everyone would probably welcome a distraction and if these recaps can provide that for someone besides myself (since writing them will give me something to do), then I should go right ahead. So.....yeah......If you’re reading this, please remember to take care and follow the steps that your region has implemented to stay healthy and stop the spread of the virus.]

Okay so before we begin, I have a confession to make: I ended up seeing a spoiler (well, two, but I will mention the other one when it becomes relevant). I’m honestly surprised that it didn’t happen sooner considering how quickly Instagram knows when I start a new series, but yeah, it was bound to happen since I’m pretty behind with the story. I saw a screenshot of one of the anime episodes (idk which one since I stopped watching it when I picked up the manga after watching episode 4) and I saved it so I could put it here:

sooooooooooooo..........yeah.........it’s kind of a bummer. But hey! At least I know one of the theories I threw out there was right. Although, it also brings up a lot more questions regarding their home life because..........why was Amane so beat up when (it seems) he had at least one family member around when he was alive? where does this other child fit into the story? Did he also go to the same school? Does Tsuchigomori know him? Also he looks real cute???? But Hanako looked so terrified when he appeared at the end of last chapter that it makes me not trust him immediately???? You all are probably saying in your heads “well if you just start the fucking chapter you will get some answers” and you know what???? You’re right, I should, damn

Ohhhh right! This is the start of another volume and it looks like our two main boys are on the cover this time.

are you really gonna post the cover page again? you ask. And yes, yes, I will. It’s not my fault that the art style is so good. Things I noticed: it’s silly but I love how Hanako’s disregard for personal space it’s an ongoing factor even on the cover with how he’s grabbing Kou’s face; I really like the contrast between their expressions (how cheeky Hanako looks vs how serious Kou looks); and since they both look like they’re ready for a fight, I’m guessing that this particular volume will possibly present challenges for these two.

The next coloured page is also wonderful. My babies look so cute and ready to tell some ghost stories. I just wanna ruffle their hair, they’re so precious.

Then we have the index and by the looks of it, this volume will focus on two arcs.

And here’s the cover page for this chapter! ...........god, I’ve barely reached the beginning of the chapter, why do I ramble so much.

Anyway, “the little mermaid”, huh? Judging by that title and by the art here, I’m guessing that title refers to Yashiro. Also, there’s a big ass claw on the left side of the page, so does this mean that the mermaid from the first chapter is coming back? Because Hanako said that he had only managed to drive her away momentarily, right? That would be really interesting!

Now directing our attention to the right side of the page...... (⚆.⚆) ......I’m guessing that this is directly related to last chapter’s cliffhanger, if Hanako’s terrified expression is anything to go by.......oh boy, this is gonna be so much f u n

Huh, that’s interesting. “She helped me make it here.” Does that mean that he wasn’t able to be in the school for some reas- wait wait a second. Idk why I’m just now putting two and two together but this boy is also dead, right? So where was he? And he honestly looks just like Hanako, so does that mean they died at around the same time? Did he also go to this school? Because Amane’s attachment to this school is clear (even if he had to take the role of “Hanako-san”) and well, there was also that thing Kou said about his grandmother sealing him away but we don’t know much about that. Would his brother also have a reason to be at the school, and not only that, but also to then have to leave the place? And a big enough reason that he needed someone else’s help to get back, at that?

Another interesting thing: so now we have the confirmation that the suspicious girl is actually his assistant. That brings up the following questions: does Amane’s brother also fills in for “Hanako-san”? Like, is it like a gatcha where you can get either of them when you summon them and lucks decides your fate? Also, with Yashiro and Amane, she became his assistant as an exchange for her wish to become human again? So, I’m thinking that if he also serves as “Hanako-san”, then she could have become his assistant in exchange for a wish, and the question then would be: what did she wish for? And that is tied to other questions that surround her such as: who is she? what are her goals?

Is this recap mostly questions and no answers? yes, that’s how it be, if you’re here expecting me to give you good answers, I’m sorry in advance lol

(ﾟдﾟ；) Σ(ﾟДﾟ|||) ahhhhhh he looks so shaken and ready to cry omg please back away and leave him alone. What is their story??? It’s clear that it is tragic but what could bring about such a reaction? Spoilers: it’s probably gonna destroy me :))))

OHHHHH!!!! LOOK AT MY GIRL GO! Hell yeah, protect your boy!! but also the fact that Hanako was so startled that he couldn’t even react fast enough to protect himself even though he had his knife in front of him is very concerning

Oh? I thought the bottle only had tea/water. Why did it do that to him? Because this doesn’t happen to all apparitions, right?

And just like that, he’s gone. Well. that was certainly a way to make an entrance.

........................okay, listen. I know I said that their story was probably tragic but I was trying to avoid thinking of this possibility because there’s something incredibly heartbreaking about the prospect. And the fact that Hanako looks so terrified only adds a layer of unease to the whole thing. If Hanako did kill him, then it shines a different light to one of the questions I asked before: “why was Amane so beat up when (apparently) he had at least one family member around when he was alive?” because........yikes. I think I had also asked before where would his parents be in the story (since it was still possible that the injuries were inflicted by bullies) and with this development, I’m even more concerned. Since, again, if Hanako killed his own brother and we take into account the rest of the information we’ve been given so far, it’s very possible that it was done in self-defence. And since Hanako was so reluctant to tell Tsuchigomori anything regarding the person who did that to him (going to the extent of saying he forgave them), the culprit being a family member is not farfetched at all.

Oh, no, sweetie-pie (ಥ﹏ಥ) He looks so distraught! It seems like he had a flashback of some sort judging by him snapping out of it at the end. The evidence just keeps on piling up against his brother and i’m very stre s s ed

Ahhhh and he’s all wobbly while apologizing to her and he leaves and they’re just alone and sad and the donuts are ruined. I’m :c sad :CC

............................is that a fish? because it doesn’t look like the mermaid, so maybe she sent her “minions”? Hanako said that the fish work for the mermaids, right? I’m assuming she’s sending someone to spy on Yashiro since she most likely isn’t ready to give up Yashiro yet (even if Hanako has lessen the effects of the curse).

Next, we see that Yashiro is still thinking about what happened with Hanako while Aoi looks worried about her. Yashiro says “I guess people from different species really can’t understand each other” and “Maybe it would’ve been better if I were a supernatural too” and I mean, I see where she’s coming from. But at the same time, that’s not all there is to it. Yes, it’s obvious that they are gonna have different mindsets, not only because Hanako is a ghost but also because of what he experienced when he was alive. However, I think Hanako’s reluctance to share his past has more to do with personal walls he has probably built around himself than with him being a supernatural. Like, yes, we know that he has had contact with other apparitions in the school, but who knows when was the last time he had the chance to interact with someone as a friend? Even when he was alive we know that he didn’t have friends from his class. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that while I understand Yashiro’s sentiment, her becoming a supernatural wouldn’t really help the situation.

Well, it looks like someone is conveniently ready to grant that wish and judging by the bubbles (?) around the dialogue bubbles, I think it’s the fish from before. And to that, I say no, thanks, chief.

Also

I feel so bad for Aoi, she must be so worried about Yashiro’s ongoing track record of talking to the air.

....................god, everyone is gonna think she’s off her rocker if they don’t think so already

Pfffffffft I love her so much, she’s so silly

But anyway, yes, the fish claim that they are here to “release her from the clutches of that loathsome school mystery” which sounds like a convoluted way to say that they want to take her away. “Our law states that those who have eaten the flesh and blood of our master will eventually become our next master” ohhhhh okay so that’s why they were being so polite, I had thought that they were just trying to butter her up.

Yashiro, no! Don’t fall for it!! I’m not saying that they’re lying about her new status, I’m just saying that she needs to consider the fact that the “men” are most likely not actual men if the fact that the mermaid was a fish with a face is anything to go by. Also, my girl is way too weak in front of the promise of ikemen oh boy please don’t fall for it

They say that they’ve been watching Yashiro these past few days and they think that the way Hanako treats her is “far too barbaric”.

Okay, I’m gonna stop you right there. 1) The donut incident: Yes, Hanako shouldn’t have treated her like that, but it’s obvious that he was going through some serious stuff at the moment. 2) He doesn’t speak about himself: I think I mentioned this even during the 4pm bookstacks arc, but that’s Hanako’s choice. It’s his own life story and he gets to decide when to share it. While it would be good for him to open up more to Yashiro since she clearly wants to be his friend and get to know him better, that doesn’t mean it’s gonna be easy. 3) He takes advantage of her: well, he has been quite reckless at certain points (like when he threw her down the waterfall at Yako’s boundary and when he unknowingly played with her feelings during the confession tree arc), he’s always done his best to protect her from harm. 4) Hanako thinks nothing of her: now that’s just plain wrong. As I’ve just mentioned, he always tries to protect her and we’ve seen in subtle ways that he’s clearly grown fond of her over time. He’s a teasing little shit, but he’s not a bad guy that would string her along without a care in the world. Granted, they can’t possibly know all this, but still. Don’t go dissing my boy like that.

So, they give her a vial with the mermaid’s blood and if she drinks it, her bond with Hanako will be overwritten and her bond with the mermaid will be made official. Oh, and they also say that she then “will cease to transform in reaction to water”................doesn’t- doesn’t that mean she will just be a fish all the time? right??

Okay so they gave her one day to give them an answer.

There he is!! Update: still hot

Yashiro went to him to get him to stop her but he’s really not being helpful. He asks her if he talked with Hanako and Kou. Yashiro says it would be too awkward to talk with Kou after the donuts were destroyed and like........I get it, but still, he would completely understand. Kou is one of the most wholesome boys in existence, he would not hold that against you AND more importantly, he would love to help you in anything you needed. And oh! she says she tried talking to Hanako but she hasn’t been able to find him lately. I’m a bit surprised but also really glad that she realised that this was something that Hanako needed to be aware of. It sucks that Hanako is (most likely) avoiding her, even if it is understandable.

Yashiro points out that Tsuchigomori has known Hanako for a long time and asks him if he could tell her anything about his past. And again, I feel the need to point out that he’s probably gonna tell her when he’s ready to and going about it behind his back is not the best idea.

I’m glad to see that Tsuchigomori is on the same wavelength as me. Hanako obviously carries a heavy burden on his shoulders and it’s best for the truth to come out from his own mouth.

Awww, no, sweetie, it’s not that. I think he does trust you but he’s shielded himself from other people for so long that he has a hard time opening up to anyone. And yeah, Tsuchigomori tells her he’s probably afraid of her finding out (which, again, is understandable) and that, at any rate, she should make her own decision and to make sure that decision is one that she won’t regret.

Well, speak of the devil. Look who was eavesdropping! I’m actually okay with this since Hanako really needed to hear all that (not only what the situation itself is but also how she feels about their relationship).

Atta girl, Yashiro. She’s been having a slow character development as the story progresses and it’s honestly great to see. To me, this shows a good contrast between how easily she jumped from crush to crush and how dedicated she is to stick with Hanako and learn more about him. Yes, they are just friends, but the chemistry they have is undeniable, so I still think it’s a fair comparison.

Oh, that’s the end of the chapter..........that felt short. Still a solid chapter, though. I like the slow buildup we’re establishing with Hanako and Yashiro and their relationship and I’m really excited to see how they develop it.

I have ever seen! ohmygod" and even snapchatting it and annoying the boys till they see her again at the after-party and the guys just tell her "thank god you're here we need you to make him stop" and it's just rly cute and fluffy??? ily♥

2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards

"You ripped it."

"You're shitting me!" Corbyn's eyes widened with panic as his body went rigid.

"He's shitting you," Jack chuckles from beside him. Corbyn shot a glare towards Daniel and relaxed.

"Asshole," Corbyn declared after Daniel laughed to himself.

"Five minutes away," the driver called back to the five boys.

"Are we ready?" Jonah quirked an eyebrow.

"Hell yeah, we're ready," Zach clapped his hands with excitement.

"Let me get my eyes ready, those flashes are gonna kill me," Jack clenched his eyes closed before opening them once again.

"I don't get you," Zach murmured with furrowed eyebrows.

"We're here," Corbyn let out a breath as their van pulled up behind the many others. "Holy shit, that's Rhianna."

"No way," Jonah jolted upwards and leaned over Corbyn, looking out of the window and catching Rhianna walking across the red carpet.

"Let's do this," Jack rubbed his hands together just as a man opened their door, making room for them all to climb out. It didn't take long for them to reach the center of the carpet, shouts coming from all ways from the people behind the flashing cameras.

"Do a pose!" Someone called, making Jack and Daniel get down on their knees and open their arms in Corbyn, Zach and Jonah's direction.

Eventually, they moved onwards and walked up to the first interviewer a little off of the carpet, a woman with short brown hair and a microphone labeled 'E!'. They stopped beside her and in front of the two recording cameras.

"Hi, guys!" Carmen beamed and they all kindly greeted her back. "So this is your second time attending the iHeartRadio Music Awards, correct?"

"Correct," Jonah nods with a smile and drapes an arm around Corbyn's shoulder.

"You guys are rising rapidly!"

"Are we?" Daniel squints his eyes and Jack nudged his side.

"Fortunately," Zach chuckles, crossing his arms just a little below his upper chest.

"Also, congratulations on all the good talk on your new album!" She smiles and they all quickly thank her. "So, I have a few questions a lot of us have been dying to ask - us being me and your fans, of course."

"Ask away," Jack nods.

"Okay, So first question: who is single and who isn't?"

The guys weren't surprised at all, fully aware that they'd be asked about their relationships frequently throughout the night.

"Single," Jonah hums.

"Single," Zach declares.

"Not single," Corbyn sways back and forth on his heels.

"Not single," Jack snapped his fingers.

"Does being in a relationship with my phone count?" Daniel furrows his eyebrows, causing the rest to let out small laughs.

"That can count," Carmen nods.

"In that case, none of us are single," Jonah concludes.

"Right," Zach chortles.

"Alright, next question-"

For the next six minutes, the boys are asked a few questions. And then you walked by.

"Y/N!" Carmen abruptly called, confusing the boys although they hadn't shown it. "Y/N!"

She grabbed your attention, causing you to look towards the woman and the group of guys. A smile grew on your lips as you walked towards them, their eyes eventually falling on you.

Zach felt his mouth go dry when he came to the realization that Y/N Y/L/N was walking their way then and there.

Y/N Y/L/N was a famous singer and you've been relevant for the past two years, nearly every one of your songs topping in charts. You've even written a few for other artists, getting you even more recognition.

You had been his celebrity crush for the past year and he had made that clear in plenty of interviews. He began to wonder if you've ever watched one.

The guys all glanced at Zach, coy smirks on their lips as they see the starstruck boy. His eyes stayed on your figure and he didn't believe anything or anyone could be more perfect looking than you in the red dress you wore.

"Hi," you smiled as Carmen gave you a quick hug.

"Guys, you know Y/N Y/L/N, right?"

"Yeah, we love your music," Corbyn subtly nudged Zach with his elbow.

"Oh, thank you," you smile with your mouth closed. "I loved your most recent album."

Zach almost dropped dead when you said that.

"So you guys are nominated for two awards, and so are you," Carmen gestured her hand to the boys before moving it your way. "Could you tell us what the nominations are?"

"Oh, uhm, we're up for Best Boy Band and Best Music Video," Daniel smiled.

"And I'm up for Best Collaboration and Best New Pop Artist," you shrug, not noticing how Zach's eyes were practically glued to you.

"Wow, those are big ones! Congratulations to you all," Carmen grins. "And what are your ages, again?"

"I'm twenty. Jack's nineteen, Corbyn's twenty, Daniel's nineteen, and Zach is seventeen," Jonah answers for them all. "We're all turning a year older this year though, none of our birthdays have passed."

"Zach's the baby," Carmen chuckles and Zach lets out a dramatic groan, tearing his gaze away from you and back to Carmen at the sound of his name.

"Yeah, yeah," Zach sighed, glancing your way to see that you were already staring at him, that beautiful smile playing on your lips.

"And your birthday just passed?" Carmen pulls your attention towards her.

"Yeah, I just turned seventeen on March 2nd, last weekend," you nod.

"Happy belated birthday!"

"Happy belated birthday," the guys smile, as well.

"Thank you," you hold a hand up to your heart, the constant smile on your lips never dropping.

"Have you walked the carpet, yet?" Carmen asks you.

"Only the first part," you nod.

"And you guys?" Carmen directed her attention to the guys.

"Same, just the first part," Jonah rolled his shoulders with his hands in his front pockets.

"Okay, well I don't want to keep you guys for long," Carmen hummed. "Huge congratulations on your nominations and I wish you luck!"

"Thank you!" You say just before taking a step back, along with the guys. You were all heading to walk the remaining carpet, the boys stopping to let you go before them. You thank them with another smile and walk ahead, stopping on the carpet once again to be photographed.

You had a hand on your hip in the midst of a pose when one of the photographers called for the guys to join you.

You didn't mind, turning to them and waving them over. They rose their eyebrows before joining the party, standing on either side of you - Daniel, Jonah, you, Zach, Jack, and Corbyn.

You all took a few pictures together before finally finishing the carpet.

"We're really huge fans by the way," Jonah lets you know.

"That's so sweet; vice versa," your voice sounded angelic to Zach. "I'll see you guys later, gotta finish a few more interviews."

"Bye," they all saluted her and she gave them one last smile before walking away.

The guys all turned to Zach, whose eyes didn't leave her faltering body.

"Did you cream your pants?" Daniel rose a single eyebrow and Zach punched him in the arm.

"Dude," Zach scoffed

"How did it feel to finally meet the love of your life," Jonah wiggles his eyebrows while Zach's cheeks stay even more red than usual.

"She was standing right next to me," Zach slowly recapped, still in a state of shock. "Like literally, right... next... to me."

"I'm surprised you didn't pass out," Corbyn claimed.

"Did you see how beautiful she looked in that dress? Like a damn royal," Zach runs a hand through his hair.

"You can babble about your future wife later, we've got to get a few more interviews in," Daniel pat the boys back before walking ahead.

"We made eye contact! She knows who I am!" Zach continued.

"Alright, we get it," Jack muttered.

"Her hair, man," Zach ignored his fellow mates. "I think she might actually be a goddess. And did you see that smile?"

"You've met once and you're in love," Jonah concluded.

"Do you think she's sitting next to us? Or around? Maybe a few rows in front?"

"Zach, dude, you can chill out," Corbyn said.

They found their seats and the official show hadn't started until an hour and a half afterward.

It wasn't until after a few performances and many given awards when Best New Pop Artist was mentioned, pronounced by (two celebs idk).

"And the winner is... Y/N Y/L/N!"

Zach perked up in his seat as a round of applause and cheering filled the stadium.

The large screens in the front displayed you standing up with wide eyes, Alessia Cara and Hailee Steinfeld giving you tight hugs. You then began to walk towards the stage, one of the security guards in tuxedos helping you climb the stairs.

Zach held up his phone and took a Snapchat recording of you as you walked up to the announcers, hugging and quietly thanking them before standing in front of the microphone. He then ended the video and wrote "an actual goddess".

"Wow," you let out a breath, a broad grin on your lips. "I don't know what else to say but thank you. Three years ago I would've never expected any of this, yet here I am," you gesture to the award in your hands. "A special thank you for everybody who listens to my music - without you, I wouldn't be here. I would also like to congratulate all of the other nominees, every one of you are amazing and to be nominated beside you all is such a privilege. Alright, I'm done rambling, now."

"She's so fucking cute," Zach smiled as you headed back to your seat.

In the remaining hours of the award show, Why Don't We won Best Boy Band and you won Best Collaboration alongside Liam Payne for your conjoined song. Throughout the entire show, Zach couldn't stop gushing about you, and as cute as it was, it was annoying for the guys.

"Are we heading to the After Party?" Corbyn asked.

"Y/N might be there," Daniel teased.

"You think so?" Zach didn't catch the mockery as his eyes lit up. Daniel merely glared before leaning back in his seat.

"So are we going or not?" Jack knit his eyebrows. "'Cause I want to."

"I wanna go," Jonah input.

"I do, too," Corbyn nodded.

"Then we're going," Daniel clapped his hands.

Hours later, the boys found themselves at the After-Party, sitting at a tall table with Ed Sheeran, Charlie Puth, and Niall Horan.

"Hey, guys!" Your voice made Zach visibly stiffen.

"Y/N!" Niall's thick accent called just before he embraced you in a hug. You greeted Ed and Charlie the same way before waving to Corbyn, Jonah, Jack, Daniel, and Zach. Zach's eyes raked your body, realizing that you had traded your long red gown for a shorter black dress.

"Congratulations on your awards! Just yesterday you were touring with me," Charlie gave you a large smile.

"Thanks, Charlie."

"And this is only your second year, aye?" Niall nodded with an approving pout.

"Yeah," you nod, your smile never leaving your lips.

"Y/N! You're here!" Daniel abruptly stood up.

"I'm here," you giggled and all Zach heard was angelic chimes.

"Zach's been gushing about you all night," Daniel groaned and Zach's jaw dropped.

"Thank God you're here, we need you to make him stop," Jonah contributed in the tattling.

You couldn't stop your face from warming up as Ed and Niall let out small chuckles.

"I-uh," you didn't know what to say as your eyebrows stayed risen with amusement and slight shock. "Thank you?" You didn't mean for it to sound like a question, but it did. You glance around and notice that the other guys are staring at you two and you slightly roll your eyes before looking back at Zach. "Wanna get something to drink with me?"

You almost laughed at Zach's pale face before he frantically nodded his head, standing up.

"Yea-yeah, of course," he walked up to you as if he was in a trance and you found the entire ordeal so cute. With a smile, you turn and begin towards the bar.

Zach looked back to the group with wide eyes.

"We'll be here," Corbyn sent a wink before shooing Zach away.

Zach bit the corner of his bottom lip, turning on his heel and speed walking to catch up with you.

"So what shall us minors get at the bar?" You hum as Zach falls into step with you.

"Heard that water is good this time of year," he joked, making you slightly laugh.

"Who wants water at an After Party?" You raise a single eyebrow, glancing at him with your peripheral vision.

"Touché," he shrugs, shoving his hands into his slack pockets. "My head is spinning."

"Are you alright?" You furrow your eyebrows in concern, halting in your steps and touching his arm.

"I just never thought I'd actually meet you," he admits, bringing a hand up and cupping the back of his neck. The look of worry on your face dropped and your smile returned.

"C'mon, let's go sit down. We can get a drink later," you chuckle, taking his wrist into your hand and tugging him in the direction of the many tables, celebrities filling them left and right. You guys seat yourself at one of the booths, your hand finally and unfortunately leaving his wrist.

"Excuse my constant fanboying," he apologizes.

"It's cute," your eyes twinkle and his heart swells.

"I-uh," he stutters before sighing. "My entire face is red, isn't it?"

"Yeah, kind of," you giggle. "It's not a bad thing. I completely lost it when Bruno Mars followed me on Instagram."

"That was us when Charlie followed our band account last year," Zach smiled.

"I follow you guys," you nod and Zach's eyebrows rose.

"You do?"

"Not with my actual account," you clarify. "I have a few accounts and I followed you guys on my private one."

"You see, in my head, I'm screaming," he confesses.

"I'll follow with my public account," you pull your phone out of the crossbody bag on your shoulder and go into Instagram, typing Why Don't We into the search bar and quickly following them before heading to Zach's page and following him as well.

"Just tell me when to stop fanboying," he jokes, and you look up at him with another joyful smile.

"You're so sweet, honestly," your face flushes.

"I just know how to appreciate really talented people who also happen to be really beautiful," he merely shrugs.

"I could be a total bitch, you know," you cock your head to the side.

"But here you are, acting like an actual angel," he nonchalantly leaned back into his seat, his nerves visibly calming. You were glad he was growing more comfortable around you.

"Do you like the food here?" You change the subject.

"No, not really," he runs a hand through his hair.

"Me neither. Wanna go get some fast food?" You suggest.

"You ask as if I'd say no," he grins before standing up and holding a hand out for you.

Three Months After Award Show

Zach Herron and Y/N Y/L/N have finally made it official! After three months of teasing and hints, Zach and Y/N made it clear that they are indeed dating.

Last night, the night of Zach Herron's eighteenth birthday, both Y/N and Zach posted two different pictures on their Instagrams with the similar captions.

Post-IW MCU Rewatch: Ant-Man

Yay, time for Ant-Man! This one has rather grown on me over the last couple of viewings (not that I ever didn’t like it).

Hi middle-aged Peggy! (Isn’t it great how many times Hayley Atwell managed to get herself into these movies beyond what the original plan was, out of sheer enthusiasm? Yeah, I’m still bitter Agent Carter got cancelled.)

The music for the logo is awesome.

My killjoy brother says the main reason he dislikes this movie is that he doesn’t think it makes sense that Hank would ever trust some stranger (Scott) with his tech. Um. Hank has been protective of the tech because he doesn’t want it to be abused. But Scott proved he wasn’t a corporate goon by going to prison for screwing over a corrupt corporation. He’s proven himself. Also he doesn’t have the knowledge to make more of the particles, so he can’t steal any of the secrets himself.

Luis is probably my favorite sidekick in the whole MCU. He’s irrepressibly cheerful, he compulsively makes delicious-looking waffles, he’s a refined wine man and fan of neo-cubism yet also steals two smoothie machines, and when he goes into ramble mode it’s the greatest thing ever.

Anyone who has ever worked food service has met an idiot like Scott’s customer. Also his boss is basically David Brent. Trying way too hard to be cool, but kind of a git and a coward.

Scott’s attitude is super endearing. Very chill, understated reactions to things that annoy him. You get the impression that it’s not so much that he’s a very patient man as that he’s just so used to stuff like Luis’s antics that he’s become kind of inured to it. He’s also able to roll with the punches. Getting fired from Baskin Robbins could’ve made him bitter and angry, but instead he just kind of shrugs and takes that Mango Fruit Blast. He’s not prideful at all.

I called the tank being real by the second time the keychain appeared onscreen. Chekhov’s Tank!

Hello, Darren Cross, dude who is only not the worst MCU villain because Malekith exists. (How did Malekith manage to have less of a personality than Darren? It’s absurd.)

The ad video for the Yellowjacket is horrifying. Do people actually make ad videos for advanced weaponry? Do they narrate them with movie narrator voices and tidy up the diction to make them sound like wonderful good pieces of technology, but in a not-entirely-convincing way?

How is a hand on a shoulder such a sinister and obvious sign of impending murder?

Cassie is the most adorable little girl ever, and the kid playing her is a really good actress. I love that Scott is a dad. It makes him much more interesting. (Also is he the only divorcé in the entire MCU? Wait no, May is too. I think he’s the only one in the movies, though.)

“He’s so ugly! I LOVE HIM!” AAAAGH. SO CUTE.

I love that all the little details keep coming back. (The tank, the “La Cucaracha” horn.” Just lots of really good callbacks. It’s hard to believe this movie had production issues with changing directors.)

The way Darren kills that guy by shrinking him, and then wipes him up and flushes him, is ridiculously horrific. And the way he looks in the mirror after that is probably the most interesting he ever is in the movie. He knows the path he’s going down, and he’s not stopping.

So it’s not entirely clear. Is Hope dating Darren? Are they living together? Or are they just business partners? I’m confused.

YES LUIS STORY TIME. This is like Kid History, and it’s my favorite thing. Please please please make an MCU recap narrated by Luis, Marvel.

This music is weird and fun. I love it.

Scott parkouring is great. I wonder why he developed that skillset when he was just an electrical engineer. Has he been doing it since he was a kid?

Scott is like the midpoint between Tony Stark and Peter Quill in almost every way. Good at outside-the-box solutions, has engineering skills (but not at Tony’s level), a sense of humor that’s more self-deprecating than Tony’s but less wide-eyed dorky than Peter’s, etc. That’s awesome.

Could you be more transparently evil than using a bleating white lamb for your ill-fated lab experiments?

Huh. There’s a moment where Scott looks in the mirror too. Is that meant to be a contrast with when Darren does it? For Scott, it’s a moment where he resigns himself to failing, even though he caved and did the burglary. I don’t really see the connection, emotionally, to the way Darren looked in the mirror, but I guess one of them is the apprentice Hank rejected, and the other is the apprentice he ultimately chose. *shrug*

Ant-Man perspective is great. The encounter with the rat is terrifying.

You broke Scott’s chill, Hank!

Okay, so Scott’s actual superpower is changing his clothes at the speed of light. It was entirely unnecessary for them to give him such a small interval of time to get the suit on.

“What happens if I throw up in this helmet?”

There were zero bullet ants on the floor in the initial wide shot of the room. Also in the second wide shot. Which takes place two seconds before Scott tries to put his foot on the floor. Did they...forget to render ants in those shots? Or did they forget there were going to be ants there when they filmed from that angle? Gonna count that one as a mistake, because they could not have gotten all over the floor that fast.

They really needed to do more to explain about Darren’s brain chemistry getting messed up by the particles, because as far as I can tell, the first time he ever shrinks himself is on the helicopter at the end. How do these particles make him evil/crazy, exactly? What was he like before? What have the particles done to Hank?

Also they shouldn’t have explained the particles as changing “atomic relative distance” without also explaining that the suit allows you to control your weight relative to size. Because sometimes Ant-Man appears to weigh as much as he looks like he should, but the rest of the time, he’s clearly still 180 lbs in that tiny space (with the reverse problem when he becomes Giant-Man). If he always weighed 180 lbs while being the size of an ant, he would constantly punch through surfaces by walking on them, and if he was always the weight of an ant, he’d be powerless to do anything except be sneaky.

The montages in this movie are great.

Scott uses Hope’s move later. :D And she was totally checking him out.

Huh. Hope and Scott’s conversation in the car happens exactly halfway through the movie, and it’s the turning point. This is when they start being on the same team.

Hank’s revelation about Janet comes rather out of nowhere. I feel like they could’ve woven that in more effectively. It’s also a little exposition-heavy to entirely work on the emotional level.

This gesture by Scott is one of the best things.

I love the crossovers. Crossovers forever! (Seriously, put Thor cameos in future GotG movies and Loki cameos in future Doctor Strange movies. No, I don’t for a second believe Loki is really dead.)

Poor Sam. He missed out on Sokovia just to get trolled by this rando in a shrinking suit.

Hope saw Scott use her move! Hee!

Sinister hand on shoulder!

Okay, Hope’s “I’m at home” line is why I was confused about whether she and Darren were dating and living together. But it occurs to me now that there’s not really an implication that it’s his home too. So I think they’re just business partners. Good. Because Darren being double-crossed by his girlfriend and failing to react on that level would have made him a much worse character than he already was.

Seriously love Luis, and the other two guys are great too. Excellent crew of wombats.

I love the wallpaper in Hank’s house. Also, just, all of Hank’s house. It’s so pretty.

Okay I absolutely believe that Luis was the only guy to ever knock out that huge dude from the prison. He’s been knocking people out with single punches left and right on this job so far. I love him even more now! That’s such a cool little bit of consistency for him.

Is it true that cops use Crown Victorias as their undercover cars most often? Because I’ve kind of assimilated that as real-life trivia ever since theaters.

What was the point of frying the servers if they were just going to shrink the building to nothing anyway?

Kurt and Tip are hilarious. “There was a black guy who looked exactly like me who attacked us and put us in the back of this disgusting van!”

So if the Avengers have spent the last year taking down Hydra facilities, how are there still people in Hydra who can spend billions for Yellowjacket suits?

I thought Hank was going to die the first time I saw this. Now I’m betting this will be a How to Train Your Dragon situation with Ant-Man and the Wasp, where not long after we discover the long-lost mom, the dad gets killed.

Darren’s villain music is the best thing about him. It’s very unnerving.

All the fights while Scott’s in the suit are so much fun to watch.

“Are we the good guys? Feels kinda weird.”

I don’t like that the chain attachment on the tank also gets huge. And how does a tank cushion a three-storey drop?

That Darren is able to shoot ants is very silly and weird. Would’ve worked better if there was buckshot or something. But still. This movie made me care about an ant dying.

Dangit, Darren, you just killed everyone else in the chopper. You suck.

Briefcase fight! I remember how hard everyone laughed when “Disintegration” started playing in theaters. So great.

All the abrupt cuts from epic to insignificantly small are what make these fights so funny and awesome.

Bug zapper! I watched this with my dad recently (his first time seeing it) and he laughed so hard at the bug zapper.

Another tased Avenger!

So I thought this movie was going to be stupid, right up until the trailer got to the bit with Thomas the Tank Engine. Then I knew it was going to be amazing. It’s still probably my favorite moment in the whole movie.

They kinda overdid it with the “back it up” bit.

Giant ant! Poor Paxton.

Did anyone not see it coming from the moment Hank talked about going sub-atomic that Scott was going to have to do it at the end?

The infinite shrink is mesmerizing to look at. I bet this movie was cool in 3-D. (I have glasses, so 3-D is not so fun.)

MORE STORIES FROM LUIS! The way he blinks too many times after he finishes is what really clinches it.

So yeah, I like me a heist movie, and it was definitely a brilliant decision on Marvel’s part to go small (figuratively and literally) with the next movie after Ultron. It is a mistake to think you always have to escalate your threats in a series. That was the problem for a while with Supernatural, and it’s definitely a problem in shows like Dragonball Z and Naruto too. Ant-Man was the perfect way to scale back and remind us that these movies are a ton of fun. I’m so glad that they did the same thing with the scheduling of Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp, and I can’t wait for July 6.

I really hope Ant-Man and the Wasp does the same thing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 did, and goes deeper with the characters instead of just getting bigger in scope. Because Ant-Man is one of the more surface-level movies in the MCU. Scott doesn’t really carry a lot of angst, so even though his arc is about proving he can be the hero Cassie sees him as, it’s pretty chill, with just a couple of moments where he loses...hope...(dang it) in his ability to make this work and be the dad he wants to be.

The bigger emotional arc was Hank and Hope, because Hope absolutely carries her angst and bitterness in a big way. They’re kind of a representation of what Scott and Cassie could end up being if Scott doesn’t get his crap together. And Darren is an evil parallel for Scott, obviously. All of the different arcs probably would’ve worked better if they’d spent enough time and effort on Darren to make him interesting. But the lack of depth in all of the arcs doesn’t ruin the movie because it’s a comedy. This is deliberately a light, fun comedy action movie, and it’s great.

Also it has a good and memorable soundtrack, so bonus points.
