Paris-2024 - Opening Ceremony in Question
Olympic Opening Ceremony in question due to terror threat.
Paris, April 18, 2024, Socrates George Kazolias French authorities are having second thoughts on their ambitious plan to hold the Olympic opening ceremony on the river Seine. “There are Plans B and C which we are preparing in parallel,” French president Emanuel Macron said on April 15.  From the beginning, those in charge of Olympic security have been hostile to the idea of an opening ceremony,…

Milestone Monday
On this day, August 1 in 1936, the Summer Olympics opened in Berlin with a ceremony presided over by Adolf Hitler. This Olympiad had a number of its own milestones: it was the first to be televised; noted German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl was commissioned to produce the documentary Olympia, which pioneered many of the techniques now common in the filming of sports; Hitler used the games as an opportunity to showcase his government’s racist and antisemitic policies; and Black American athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals in the sprint and long jump events as a middle finger in the eye of those policies.
The opening ceremony featured a flyover by the German airship Hindenburg flying the Olympic flag behind it, and a lot of Hitler glorification. The American novelist Thomas Wolfe was present and observed that the opening was an "almost religious event, the crowd screaming, swaying in unison and begging for Hitler. There was something scary about it; his cult of personality." The opening wasn’t without its absurdly humorous moment however. Toward the end, 25,000 pigeons were released over the stadium, dramatically captured by Riefenstahl in her film. At the same time, cannons were fired, apparently terrifying the circling army of pigeons, which proceeded to release a barrage of pigeon poop on the upward-looking spectators.
This souvenir publication, Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung: Olympia-Sonderheft, was a special issue of the weekly German illustrated magazine Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, published by Ullstein Verlag and produced on June 16, 1936, featuring over 90 fully-illustrated pages.

Opening Ceremony Audience At Paris 2024 Olympics Reduced to 300,000
Tumblr media
Gerald Darmanin, the French Interior Minister, has confirmed that the opening ceremony for the Paris 2024 Olympics will be attended by approximately 300,000 people, much fewer than the original plan. This ceremony will take place on July 26th, outside of a traditional stadium setting, with a big show on the River Seine. Tens of thousands of police and military personnel will be deployed to maintain security.
The parade of athletes will travel 3.7 miles along the Seine, with spectators lining both sides. Darmanin added that around 220,000 people will be given free tickets to the higher embankments, while 100,000 paying viewers will enjoy a view of the waterline.
Initially, organizers expected a turnout of 600,000 for the event, but no reason was offered for the lowered projection. Despite concerns about security, Darmanin voiced confidence in France's capacity to host the globe without incident and lauded the country's security forces.
French President Emmanuel Macron had earlier warned that if there were any security risks in the run-up to the event, the ceremony may be changed. He used the terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015 as an example of a circumstance that necessitated a rethinking.
Overall, while security fears have drastically decreased attendance at the Paris 2024 Olympics' opening ceremony, French authorities remain confidence in their abilities to provide a safe and successful event.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced on Wednesday that approximately 300,000 people would be permitted to attend the opening ceremony for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This number is nearly half of what was originally planned.
On July 26th, an opening ceremony will be held outside of a traditional stadium setting, with a spectacular show taking place on the Seine River. Tens of thousands of police officers and troops will be deployed as part of the massive security operation that will take place.

The Opening Ceremony from the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. I wanted to watch it for a while because I knew these games were a turning point from a dictatorship to democracy, and just wanted to see how vintage opening ceremonies operated.
Some notes I've had:
--I knew that 1996 was the first time where the Opening Ceremony had a storyline, so watching some of these aspects prior to the Parade of Nations felt like amateur hour. Some of it had aspects of Korean culture in it, which were the best parts, honestly. --I was surprised that there was a bit more show after the lighting of the cauldron. --It's interesting to see Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia as united countries in these games--two of them for the last time in the Summer games. --There are three types of parade of nations outfits: traditional clothing, tracksuits, and Western-style business suits. --I randomly laughed when Turkey was introduced. Not because of resentment, but because I was thinking of Turkish-Korean relations, or Abnormal Summit... --and speaking of which, I've heard of "Hand in Hand" playing in Abnormal Summit, or at least the early episodes!
