Okay so I had this idea for a long time, and by long I mean long..

So maybe reader is the adopted daughter of the wheelers and one years younger than Nancy but also a little older than Mike, and she was relatively a smart kid, she was in the year Nancy was, which made her great friends with Barbara, but she hated Steve as she felt that he was just using his sister, and the most famous thing about reader was that she was very protective of her siblings. But when Jonathan had a fight with Steve and reader got to know that he wasn't so bad when she saw him erasing all that stuff and even helped his sister, Jonathan and her to fight the monster in the Byers' house, reader became friends with him, but at the end of the season 1,reader was kidnapped by a secret agency, who had found out that reader had powers as reader was originally from England, and her parents were scientists, so when they were experimenting one day, reader came in their lab and accidentally drank a weird solution which made her have powers like Eleven and even controlling elements like water, fire, grass. Reader was actually a year younger than Henry creel, she was also great friends with him, of course she being the talkative one, the day Henry killed his parents? He also killed reader's, she ran away from him, which he obviously didn't like and she met with the same agency who had kidnapped her later on again, they had freeze reader in ice like captain America, but then one scientist opened her case and she ran away to an orphanage, where she met the wheelers. Now, reader comes back at the last episode of season Two, and she becomes friends with Billy, and grows a crush on him, (Billy and Mrs. Wheeler arc isn't here, just.. No..) and Billy offers her for a private swim session, when he sees her swimming, reader then agrees saying she already knew but extra won't harm, she also gets flashbacks of the time when she was forced to learn swimming in England's cold water by them when Billy asks her how she knew it so well, later on, she knew something was wrong with Billy and when Mike and his friends lock Billy in the sauna, reader tries comfort him, but when it gets activated she saves his brother and her friends, with the help of Eleven. She tries to help Billy but he runs away, She later on also meets Steve and the rest, who ere equally shocked to see reader come back, and she had turned more pretty, including the fact that she literally had to massacre the lab to come back, and she saved the rest of the children who were there with her, sadly Billy dies, which creates a huge impact on reader as Steve watches her break in the background, knowing that he sadly fell in love with her and then he also watches her fall for the freak Eddie, and become friends with Chrissy, and reader went to the upside down with Chrissy, so when Chrissy died and reader fainted, Eddie took her with him and hid, and reader introduced Eddie to them, when Reader went to upside down with Max, she wasn't able to find her, but then she felt a hand on her shoulder and saw Billy there, who guided her to his sister, reader helped max get out and Steve again had to watch as Reader mourned for Eddie as she kept mumbling 'Not again..' but then to everyone's shock, The upside down took over and two most unexpected people came out... Billy and Eddie

Felt like doing some replies the ~ old fashioned ~ way. I should be packing, but I don’t wanna. One good thing about this semester is that I don’t have classes on Monday morning, which means I don’t have to go to Prague on Sunday. But I’ll be once again going home late on Friday -_- Oh well. Maybe I could skip the lecture every once in a while to go home on Thursday afternoon.

I’m scared. Not really of what I’ll have to learn because I know that even if it’s difficult, I’ll probably get it in my brain in the end. Somehow. I’m more scared that once again, I’ll be left alone. I haven’t really found a stable friend group. I mean, I talk to some people sometimes, but I wouldn’t call it a friendship. One friend that I thought I could rely on doesn’t even bother saying hello to me anymore. I don’t know what I did to him, he just stopped talking to me. But maybe it’s for the best. Even when we still talked, I couldn’t believe how judgemental he was, and I often wondered if he talks about me like that too when I can’t hear it. He probably did. Oh well, I’ll see what I can do. I hope I’ll run into someone who is kinda like my best friend from high school.

As for sims stuff, I know I still owe some things to some people and I feel bad about it. You’ll get it eventually. I’m actually looking forward to doing it too. Makeovers are fun. I’d also like to release some more sims, I have one more sim dump and then some old legacy characters I want to share, plus some BC contestants that didn’t make it. They like to get eliminated in the first rounds.

Also, thanks for the comments on my mental health update post. I’ll see how this turns out and if it doesn’t get any better (I’m kinda hoping that better weather brings better mood, it worked before), I’ll start looking for a therapist or something. No offense to my parents but talking to them about this didn’t help in a slightest. They just don’t get it. And I swear I’m not reverting back to the “I’m an edgy misunderstood teenager” phase. Even though “edgy misunderstood teenager” is an aesthetic I still live for. Whatever that means.

And thanks for the tips on the laptop post. I’ll keep them in mind and I’ll probably ask again when the time comes and I actually buy a new one.

Omg sea in Prague sounds kinda cool, my faculty would be so close to the beach *-* Haha but at the same time it’s kinda terrifying, where would the sea come from? From the north? From the south? Would that mean my home doesn’t exist? Or, actually, considering my town was built on a big hill, would that mean I live on an island? And which part of Prague would be under the sea and which one would stay?

Sorry, I got distracted thinking of this AU where my country actually has access to the sea :D But we used to have it, back in like I think 12th or 13th century. We’re wayyyy smaller now.

Pssst, not to enable or anything, but Picasa 3 has this nice feature where you can take a bunch of pics and it makes them into a nice collage. That's how I made mine, and then used them as my desktop backgrounds ��

I think I’ll use Photoshop, like I do for everything else, but thanks for giving me an idea for my new background! I used to have my sims or some other characters set as a background, but now that I take my laptop to school I feel a bit uncomfortable with that, so since October I’ve had this kinda boring background and I’ve been meaning to change it into something nicer, I just didn’t know what to put there. Now I do.

Also, Toy Story always unpacks this weird guilt in me haha. Because as a child, naturally I was like “I would NEVER abandon my toys, I’ll keep them forever!”. And now...they’re in boxes...under my bed and in the basement...some of them I gave away or to my younger sister, who then also gave some away because she’s fifteen now. I still have my plushies and teddy bears in my bed though, it would be too empty without them :D

Oh this song was the first song of this bad which I heard! It was also 5-6 years ago.though I do not listen to them often these days.

I think the first song I heard was What Have You Done, which I liked and still like very much, but then I heard this one and went kinda crazy because it just sounded so epic and exactly what my poor slightly depressed fifteen years old soul needed. In one day, I completely switched from pop to metal and it took me a few years to appreciate my old favourite music again. (I know that I say all the time that I’m a Taylor Swift stan, but actually I only really started LOVING her music again last year.)

I’ve always thought that it’s kinda funny that in my Music class, for the first semester I prepared a project about Taylor Swift. In the second semester, that changed, the old pop loving Ronnie was dead, and my new project was about Within Temptation :D But I remember that I was actually upset that day, I chose to show my classmates the video of What About Us and they didn’t appreciate it. And then after me, my other classmate had a project about some singer who had this weird song about getting high. They wanted to replay it. I was so bitter, in my head I was like “this song that I showed you has an interesting meaningful message and you’d rather listen to a song about drugs, how dare you?! You’re absolutely terrible!”

Yeah. I mean, I get it today, but I was so, so bitter.

I recently found out they had a new album out (and Nightwish had a new single out too ��) and early 2000s emo teenage me immediately surfaced and threw money at my screen!

Ahhhh I’ve basically had Noise on repeat since it came out, I love it so much! And the video is cool too. I can’t wait to hear the whole album. Nightwish never disappoints, I hope I’ll one day get to see them live. I’ve had a few chances but then it never worked out.

This is what I’m gonna do... I’ll be doing more structured reviews later and most likely liveblogging suggested stuff and tagging with “Nesha Watches (Insert Title) for all liveblog posts. For this first review, I won’t be as structured, because I didn’t really plan on reviewing, so this is basically all of my comments to friends @chenoahchantel and @daintyurbanprincess that were made whilst I was watching this show suggested to me by @rbaifzau 

It didn’t take me long to be annoyed with the white boy in this show. It doesn’t take much anyways, but one episode in and I’m over him already. This dude saw her at a party, she got pushed into the pool accidentally, he gave her a dry shirt, and two minutes later tried to kiss her… TF..  

Girl, this bout to be IGNANT...

Chile... She was like, "What are you doing?" And he looked surprised. Like whet. And in episode 2 after having seen her thrice and spoken to her once, he telling his best friend, "I'm pretty sure I like her a lot." I HATE stuff like this. Why did I tell old girl I'd watch this and discuss it with her? 😭

But she like him, so like??? 😭

And her daddy, who we haven't seen yet is presumably a rolling stone. Only one negro in this town and the nigga gotta be probably running around on his wife? 🙄 I'm like, OH, so the one Black man in the show gotta be a rolling stone? And even though his wife is also highly irresponsible as a parent, she's sort of made out to be the victim of his dreams. They never portray Black mothers doing things on their own as victims. That woman was messing up left and right and it's all on her husband not being there, when that's only part of the problem.

Also, if she IS the only present parent and made the decision to do that, she should be doing it instead of leaning on Summer all of the time. 

And she got a close friend that have an obvious crush on her but she seems oblivious. I hate dis

This dude reminds me of Max Theriot. He always looked musty to me. 🤣🤣🤣 He look like him breaf stank. Him and Jack Griffo were working on something where they play soldiers and I absolutely said, "He still look like he stank" when I saw him on Instagram…

This is basically the same mold of dude and it looks moldy and should be tossed out. None for me, thanks.

But, there are moments in this show that's really cracking me up. 🤣🤣🤣 It's like, I feel like I should enjoy it for the messiness of it, but the main characters can be infuriating.

She called him an asshole and he said, "You don't even know me." No duh dipshit. She ain't know you when you tried to kiss her neither. NOR when you was talmbout you like her. 

This girl kissing her friend!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. She's gonna hurt this boy! My Gwad. He finna be discombobulated. 😭😭😭 He all happy today and she don't even see him like that. Lordt.

He walked up and she look uncomfortable AF. Her younger sister is like, "You're being weird." 🤣🤣🤣 Even SHE hip to something. He on the beach talmbout "It's hot today, don't you think?" And took his shirt off. 😭😭😭😭😭😭

I like Summer's friends and feel bad for them because she really didn't treat them kindly. She used Edo whenever she was upset by Ale and then she just completely ditched Sofie on her birthday and didn't even text her or anything. Just had her waiting on her and didn't even apologize. Like, I love that she gets a chance to be human, but being an asshole to the people who you're supposed to be friends with is such an upsetting trope to me.

And the connection between her and Ale is so weird. He comes across as super predatory in the beginning and I don't understand why she liked him in the first place, but also whenever he does something by mistake, she is so angry at him, even though she's been just as inconsiderate when it comes to her friends.

NOW... HE HARASSING HER AT HER JOB.

Talmbout if she got a boyfriend he'll "take care of him" 😖 After she told him to leave and he said he'd wait for her outside, she asked her coworker, "What do you do to let a guy know you like him back?"

NOW, she went outside and he's there, but her friend showed up to surprise her after work. 🤣 Whoever made this HATES me

He stole a book out her locker and left a card with his phone number. How is this the start of a romance???

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. FRIEND IS TALKING ABOUT THE KISS...He said it was perfect........

Chile... And she don't even wanna tell their other best friend. Bruh. He said, "What we have doesn't need to be discussed." Summy PLEASE tell this young man...HE TRIED TO KISS HER AGAIN AND SHE SAID, "We just talked about last night's mistake" 😭😭😭

And she done hurt my friend this way, but she worried about Maxface because his mama can't reach him on the phone??? Girl.. go.. girl...

The gag is that she got mad at Ale because she saw him talking to his ex and she had to cover for him at work, but you've now ACTUALLY put your best friend in a bad space. And he ran into her mom and little sister and looked so uncomfortable but kept it short and sweet. These are people he loves. Idk. I feel bad for him and also like she kind of a hypocrite.

That was what REALLY bothered me. I don't expect her to be perfect, by all means. Black girls should be allowed their imperfections and their mistakes, but the fact that she knows what it's like to have the people you love be so absent and that she would treat her friends this way because of one guy who she's only known for a couple of months was disappointing for her character. She could have been written imperfectly without this glaring problem that I don't believe a real person in her position would actually have. 

I think in real life, the girl who raises her sister and basically has to lift her mother up all the time would overextend herself to her friends, but instead, she just leaves them in her dust as soon as she gets some dick. 😭

He is now hanging out with her little sister. 😭😭😭She goes to school with them but she looks tiny. I'm cringing at everything.

BRUH. Like... I can't tell if they're trying to or not, but I wouldn't be surprised because he's cool with the sister too, but they've been friends a while, so I didn't think much of it until Summer hurt him.I thought she liked him earlier, so idk if he is noticing her or I just EXPECT it. 

OAN, this man realized his son had a motorcycle accident on purpose and got mad instead of concerned

At one point, they say he's been riding bikes for 20 years, and whenever his father is mad that he had his accident on purpose (which I'll come back to) he says that he's never made a mistake like that, not even was he was 4, so Ale is AT LEAST 24 and she JUST turned 18. Which is WILD to me, even though at 18 I dated someone who was 23 (he was possessive and abusive, so I have a real suspicion of age gaps). 

But, aside from that - she gets mad at him any time she sees him with his ex when It is perfectly fine to speak with your ex and whenever she did see them together, it was always innocent and she didn't give him a chance to explain.

But then, when he does something questionable, like whenever he tried to kiss her the first day they met, or whenever he came to her job to ask her out and she told him to leave but he said he was going to wait outside (toxic AF and presumptuous) she is fine with those things.

Now, back to Ale's accident. I really felt so bad for him whenever we discover he did this on purpose, because his father is mad, when they should be concerned. His mother says, "You could have died" and he agrees...

How did they not notice that meant that this young man was so disappointed with his life as a biker that he was literally suicidal? They just grazed past it and whenever he vanished on them, there wasn't a huge call to find him,even though he'd just admitted to purposefully filling a possibly fatal mistake.

I'm prepared for nothing but disappointment. ALL these people outta there. Ale's best friend is in love with his ex. 😭 IT'S SUMMER'S 18TH BIRTHDAY. MYNIGGA She really stood her other best friend up to go get some dick on a little ass boat

OMG AS I WAS TYPING THAT SHE GOT HIT BY A DAMN CAR

I was really upset by these things coming to light, and also whenever Blue gets hit by a car, because all of the reviews that I've seen on this site have been that it's a cute love story with likable characters, but nobody mentions the problematic content, the dark portions of the story that can be triggering - like suicide and alcohol incidents and literally seeing a young Black girl be hit and run by a car??? 

I wasn't prepared for that shit in a "cute love story." I think that this story is less cute and more dark than people have made it out to be, and that's one of my problems with it. It isn't marketed as a dramatic coming of age story. It's marketed as a romantic comedy, when it is more serious than that and has a lot of issues that should be considered.

The lesbian best friend is in love with her too??????????????????? I. Hate. This.

My favorite person in this whole thing is the lesbian in the background, Irene. And also Dario.

I was entertained a lot of the times. Just heavily confused because I couldn't figure out what the tone was supposed to be. 😁

In conclusion - it's maybe a dark comedy, not a cute comedy, IS a coming of age about a young Black girl who is kind of an asshole, but Black girls should be free to be assholes too. White dudes do it all the time and are valued characters. The dude is weird AF for chasing around this 17 year old girl and he's in his 20s. Idk if that's normal in Italy. It's nasty to me. Their beginning is young people foolishness and there's not much that we see their relationship built upon, but that happens, yanno. You young, tired and silly and some pushy dude makes his move whenever he see you. Slap some discount sex in a dinghy on it and you have this show. I don't recommend it, but a lot of folk loved it, so I guess it did what it meant to do.

You were in the Wheeler's basement, watching a young girl lift the Millenium Falon off the ground with just her mind. There was no gimmick to it, no string to help support it, you must have waved your hand over the toy at least eight times. You looked up at Steve, your eyes getting bigger as his expression couldn't help but smile at your sense of wonder.

"Holy shit," You mumbled, looking back at the girl. A smile came across your face, "You're the real deal. Holy fuck!" You stood up, placing your hands on the sides of your face, spinning in a circle to finally look at Steve once more. "Jesus, fuck! I'm sorry for the cursing. It's just―fuck!" The younger boys glanced over at Steve, unsure of what was going on.

"Was it the best thing to tell her?" Mike, the leader of their pack, asked.

"What? Y/N? Yeah, she's totally," Steve couldn't help but smiled at you when he saw the look on your face. Pure amazement, "cool." He finished his sentence. "Anyways, didn't you tell Max all this with just knowing her of just a week?"

"That wasn't all of our decision!" Mike interjected, pointing at Lucas, "Lucas told her without letting any of us know!"

"I've known Y/N since kindergarten," Steve said, crossing his arms, looking down at the young teens, "I say, she should know because I need at least another set of hands to handle all of you."

"But what about the bad men?" Will softly spoke up. His big doe eyes looked at Steve, having a sense of worrying hitting the pit of his stomach, "Or the upside down? We are going to have another person to worry about."

"I'll look after her." Steve quickly said. He rubbed the tip of his nose to hide away his blush from everyone. Everyone that is but one boy catching it.

"This was your plan all along! He wouldn't shut up about her earlier! He was waiting by the phone all night!" Dustin practically yelled. He pointed to the guy that he recently looked up to, "What happened to show them you don't care?"

Steve scrambled to quickly shut Dustin up, clapping his hands to cover any words that came out of Dustin’s mouth so that you didn't hear everything, "Hey! Hey! Hey! Cool it. It's already done, deal with it." Steve barked at the four. He turned to see you looking at Eleven, rubbing her nose on the sleeve of your jacket. He couldn’t help but smile by your action.

"If you pinch the bottom of your nose rather than the top, it will stop the nosebleed a lot quicker." You paused as you saw with one wipe, it had already stopped. You shrugged to yourself and then laughed, "Oh it's a one and done kind of deal. Lucky you!"

El cupped your cheeks in her hands, studying your face. "Pretty." She softly said.

You copied her actions and smiled back at her, "Pretty." El looked over at Steve then her direction back to you. Back to Steve. Then you.

"Girlfriend?" El asked.

"What―what girlfriend?" Steve's face turned into a bright shade of pink as he lost his grip on the table, losing his sense of balance. "Eleven, don't say those type of things out loud." Steve stammered, covering his face with his hand. He turned away from you, mumbling to himself.

"No." You smiled at El. You took your hands away from her, "No, I'm kind of seeing someone else. Billy."

"Ew, why?" Max spat. She sat in the fort on the ground, playing with a rubric cube. Her gaze fell on yours and her face went sour, "Why go out with my dick step-brother?"

"He's not that bad." You rubbed your arm, "He's a sweet guy." That earned a big laugh from Max. She couldn't help herself from expressing how wrong you were. She got up from her seat, walking over to the guys. She slapped Steve's back, causing him to stumble a little bit.

"What are you doing?" Steve whispered harshly at Maxine. Max raised her hand in motion towards Steve as if he was a prize on the Price is Right.

"Why not date Steve instead?" Max said, "He's far better than that asshole."

"Hey! Hey! Hey!" Steve yelled out once more, moving away from the kids. "No more on who's dating who! That’s not what’s important!"

"Totally!" You peeped up, waving your hands in front of your face: mostly to try and hide your blush away from Steve. "You mentioned something of 'bad men'," You looked over at Will, "Who are they?"

"Hawkins," Mike answered for Will.

"As in Hawkins Labs?" You looked at Eleven, your face crushed when you saw her expression cowards into a bit of fear, "They did this to you?" All El did was nod softly at you. You looked at Steve, "They found a huge murder at Hawkins, no one should be alive after all of that."

"That was the upside down." Will said, "They killed everyone."

"Then what happened to the upside down? Are they still out here?" You asked.

"No, El took care of the gates," Mike assured you. He let out a huff, growing annoyed with the questions, "This was a mistake, Steve. You shouldn't have told her!" Mike yelled, lightly hitting Steve in the chest.

"Hey!" You snapped at Mike, grabbing everyone's attention, "At least I'm trying to understand and not straight up call you fucking crazy! It's a lot to fucking take in so fucking cool it, will ya?" Steve walked over to you, placing his hands on your shoulders. You looked away, trying to collect your breath. You shut your eyes, focusing on Steve's thumbs where they were rubbing your shoulders lightly.

"It's ok, Y/N," Steve calmly whispered to you, "It will just take some time for Mike to see that you're cool." You opened your eyes to stare at Steve. He gave you a slight smile, one hand moving to your cheek instantly calming you down. "I've got you, don't worry." He wanted to lean in, just give you that reassuring kiss that everything was going to be ok but he had to hold himself back.

"So where are the others?" You asked, looking at Eleven. You saw that the group looked confused at your question, not entirely sure what you just asked. You pulled away from Steve's touch, raising an eyebrow, "You know one through ten? If she's eleven, there has to be more." They remained silent. "Really? No one ever wondered this?"

"Eight." Eleven spoke up. You turned to look down at Eleven, she stared at you as she repeated her words once more, "I met Eight."

You motioned your hand to focus on El, looking at the others as you couldn't help but have a smug look on your face, "There you go." You said, "How about you focus on finding the others." You placed your hands on your hips, turning back to El to get more answers, "Where are they?"

"She," El told you, "She was in Chicago."

"Where is she now?" Mike asked, pushing you away from El. You stumbled until you hit Steve, back pressed up against his chest. You weren't bothered by it, you were interested in what was going on. Eleven shrugged her shoulders, giving everyone an answer. Mike turned to his group of friends then looking at you and Steve, "We need to find her."

"No," Both you and Steve said in unison. You looked back to stare at Steve shocked that you two were in link with the same thought.

"If she is anything like Eleven, she maybe dangerous." You explained, waving your hand in a quick slash to shut down Mike's thought on finding Eight. "She may have abilities and there's nothing saying she's friendly."

"That's exactly right," Steve added, placing his hands on his hips, "We don't know if she's friend or foe."

"Foe." Eleven quickly said, looking at the two of you, "She's killing."

"Well, that answers that!" Steve immediately said, throwing his hands out, "No way am I letting you children go near a killer!"

Before Mike could fight back, you all had stopped to hear Mrs. Wheeler speak to someone at the top of the stairs, "They should all be in the basement, Billy." Quickly, everyone's eyes were on Max, who looked petrified.

"Shit." She mumbled, looking over at the clock. "Is it really that late?" She began to gather her things, shoving them in her backpack and head straight to the back door.

"Whoa, hey," You let out, "What's the rush, it's just Billy."

Max grabbed the doorknob, turning to look at you, shooting you a glare, "Exactly." She hurried out of the door, right before Billy entered from upstairs. You turned to see him coming down, with a scowl on his face.

"Where is she?" He spat at the five kids. "My dad is up my ass because Max isn't home...once again. So, where is she?" His voice echoed in the small basement, causing the five to squint at the sound of his voice.

"Not here." You spoke up. Billy turned, shocked to see you here. "I've been here for a while and she wasn't here when I got here." You lied through your teeth.

"Y/N," Billy's expression quickly switched to a more flirtatious tone, "I didn't expect to see you here." Billy's eyes moved up, to what you quickly realized that Steve was still behind you. "King Steve, with a bunch of kids?"

"We're helping them with a project." You quickly answered, "They needed some input with biology." Someone had to be taking that damn class. Billy pressed his lips together, looking over at the middle schoolers.

"If you see my brat of a sister, let me know." He growled. He looked at you once more and yet again, his expression got softer towards you, "I'll see you at school, baby girl." That nickname didn't sit with you well and it made your stomach turn. You gave Billy a small smile, waving him off as he went back upstairs to leave.

"Seriously, what do you see in that asshole?" Steve let out, his voice dripping with jealousy.

"Hey," You pointed your finger at Steve, "This isn't about me right now." You turned to look at Eleven, taking in a deep breath, "What powers does she have and should we be worried?" You couldn't help but feel Steve chest up against you once again, feeling his steady breath along your back: having the same concern as you.

You had entered, what felt like, a long-term commitment with him.

@apolloniae Okay, first: skffghfk, omg wow, thank you!! That means a lot, especially since this passage is all still early-ish in the writing process for me (like… it’s not as early as the borderline stream of consciousness first-person POV stuff that I was writing with this project last summer, but it’s still fairly early), and I consider it pretty rough still

THAT SAID. omg, dialogue is actually something I both love and dread writing, because I never feel like I have the best gauge on how much is enough or if I’m shoving in too much exposition with it or what, but! I have a couple things I rely on

Not-so-fun secret first: that particular section might be a pretty early draft, but I’ve still revised it something like four times, from jotting the initial idea down longhand, through the different typed versions of this scene that I’ve written (which have gotten changed around pretty significantly), and revisions help a lot with dialogue, in my experience. They can be anything from small stuff like figuring out a better word order but mostly keeping things the same, to taking a really sketchy outline (e.g., “A says something about B’s shoes, B thinks A is being rude and what is up with that, and C is just happy to be here, why can’t we all get along” or full on snatches of dialogue, but written in a way that doesn’t fit the characters) and building the scene up from there. Either way, revisions are a writer’s friend.

But, okay. Speaking more generally: the best place to start is just getting familiar with dialogue, both in real life and in fiction. You really do need both of these influences to write dialogue, because getting more familiar with how people speak IRL can help your dialogue feel realistic — and in some cases, it can be really important to have that verisimilitude, e.g. when you’re writing a bilingual or multilingual character and don’t want to fall into some of the more tired, unrealistic tropes of how multilingualism can manifest in people’s speech; and when you’re writing a deaf character (disclaimer that I’m not deaf, and this fic isn’t the be-all and end-all of how to do this well, but I really like the portrayals of Steve and Clint in, “Trump Diet” by caloriebomb on AO3, and they’re pretty well-researched and well-written portrayals of deaf characters).

On the other hand, though, only listening to how people talk IRL isn’t enough. You can learn a lot from that, for sure — especially when it comes to things like how people present themselves from situation to situation, and how their speech patterns or word choices can change in different contexts (from full-fledged code-switching, to more simple things like swapping in child-friendly substitutes for swear words when you’re with your godkids/younger sibling/grandma/whoever) — but you also need to look at how different techniques for writing dialogue work or don’t in order to figure out how to best present the dialogue so that it helps tell your story.

Different writers also have different strengths that you can learn from, e.g. JKR is really good at blending summaries of things the audience already knows into new scenes (like Harry witnessing the, “Snape brings Remus his Wolfsbane Potion” scene, then immediately running and telling Ron and Hermione), vs. Neil Gaiman’s ability to make dialogue read as realistic and natural even while his characters are talking about patently non-realistic things like magic and whatnot (which I think especially comes out in American Gods, but I’m biased because I’ve been rereading it in honor of the TV series starting), vs. the way that the late, great Terry Pratchett had of really making the dialects, accents, and so on a part of his characters, rather than something pasted on (JKR can also be good at that, but sometimes she goes a bit overboard). So, reading as much as you can is good, and paying attention to how the different writers use dialogue will help you write your own.

Unfortunately, a lot of dialogue-writing ends up being a, “play it by ear” sort of thing. You can easily overdo it with flowery dialogue tags, or repeating, “said” too much. Having too much action between bits of dialogue can bog down the scene, but not having enough can make it feel like nothing’s happening while these people talk (plus, what characters do or not during a conversation can help characterize them as much as, or arguably more than, what they say and how they say it).

One of the biggest pitfalls for a lot of writers is that we put too much dialogue in, usually focusing on the parts of conversations that don’t do anything to help show who the characters are or tell the story. Like, unless your characters have a particularly unique way of saying, “hello” (and showing that to the audience helps establish the characters for us), or there’s something important about how they answer questions like, “Nice day, isn’t it?” (e.g., the, “Wonderful weather this morning” / “Yes, but I always carry an umbrella” exchange from CATFA, because it’s not actually about the weather, but is the password into the secret SSR laboratory), or, “How’re you doing?” (e.g., your character is someone who doesn’t actually respond to that question with some variation on, “Fine, and you?”), then there’s a lot of dialogue that you can probably skip.

However, it can sometimes be difficult to tell where the too much/not enough line is, once you get past that — which really just goes back to the, “Revisions are your friend and you shouldn’t be afraid of them. They don’t mean you’re a bad writer; they’re a part of making your work stronger and telling your stories in the best ways for them” point.

Finally, though, the best rule of thumb is just knowing your characters. Knowing at least a few baseline things about where your characters come from and how they present themselves are helpful for finding their voices and keeping true to it in different scenarios. A character who excessively tries to mold themself according to what other people want them to be, or who unconsciously mirrors those around them, probably won’t have the same speech patterns as a character who doesn’t give a fuck what other people think of them, or who might give a fuck but is too tired/upset/intoxicated/whatever to censor themself effectively. Characters’ upbringings and backgrounds can also come out in their dialogue, so being (more or less) clear on them can be helpful.

One pretty classic example of these ideas is the trope where someone who’s going about in unfamiliar circles may be able to emulate other people’s behaviors, pick up the common speech patterns, verbal tropes, and lingo pretty well, and so on…… but still has a particular verbal tic or cadence to their speech that they can’t shake.

For instance, my Sebastian, from that passage, grew up in a wealthy family that would be minor nobility if the U.S. acknowledged that we totally have a de facto system of nobility (and his paternal grandparents often make a big deal out of how they’re descended from a legit, “Our ancestors earned their title as knights in the service of the King of France before certain well-to-do members of the Third Estate started buying their way up into our ranks, back before the glorious Ancien Régime was even a Thing” noblesse d’épée bloodline). He’s been around folks from a mix of different backgrounds during his time in school, and more so in his adult life, which has involved a lot of hijinks in places that would make his Grandparents go, “Good Heavens, why are you slumming it with the lower classes” before focusing on the actual issues like,, “Why on Earth were you dating an ecoterrorist” and, “Oh dear, our grandson who wanted to join the priesthood when he was a boy seems to have developed a serious problem with opiates”

Like, real talk? Roland and Cecile love their grandchildren, they really do. But when Sebastian went to rehab, they tried to push for sending him to a ridiculously expensive inpatient clinic in California with a huge, pedigreed list of celebrity clients because they thought of it as Rich People Rehab. The explanation, “No, okay? If I’m doing this, then I’m going to this place in Minnesota that exclusively hosts LGBTQ clients because I really don’t feel like I’ll be helped by potentially being around homophobic fellow patients and/or staff”…… was mostly met with blank stares that were the human equivalent of the, “buffering… buffering…” spinning wheel of doom, and the response, “…But going there will put you in treatment with the common rabble, why on Earth would you want that.”

Thankfully, Abe and Marceline, Seb’s parents, were nowhere near this bad — but that classism and the emphasis on how We Are From A Distinguished, Noble Bloodline, So Act Like It were still part of the atmosphere that Seb and his siblings were raised in. Their experiences in schooling moderated it a bit (though less so for, say, eldest brother Max, who went to Posh Boarding School for all four years of high school, then did his undergrad at Columbia and grad school at Harvard), and Seb got a lot of moderation by learning the hard way that sounding too posh in a decidedly not-posh environment is a dead giveaway that you don’t belong there and might get you mistaken for a Federal agent. But it’s hard to completely shake that posh upbringing, and it comes out sometimes in his phrasing, his word choices, etc.

On the other hand, though, Seb is also a human disaster in ways that affect his speech (…and he’s multilingual, but that doesn’t fall under the heading of, “human disaster things”). The trick with those parts of him — like his anxiety and how it kicks into overdrive in certain situations (like, when he’s talking to Stephen, his sponsor’s curatorial assistant, who Seb is crushing on) — is finding a balance where it’s part of his characterization but also doesn’t get completely impossible to read (like the mistake that some people make when writing characters with stutters, where they overdo it to the point that you can’t tell what the characters are saying, but because the writers didn’t do this on purpose, you’re expected to know what’s being said).

Anyway, I’m sorry this got kind of long, but I hope it helps a bit! Dialogue can be tough to work on, but you can learn a lot from experimenting with different ideas and techniques, and just continuing to work on it, even when you hate what you’re writing. ❤️
