one thing about ptj's writing that always leaves a bad taste in my mouth is sometimes i feel he doesn't completely grasp the issues of abuse and sexual trauma, mostly and majorly for the female characters, but the male characters too.

take for example mira getting sexually assaulted by the cult leader and camp instructor, zoe's transaction with logan, club vivi, vin'mom being raped and killed by the shaman, sujin being abused and preyed upon and sexually assaulted before getting beaten to death by taejin... ALL of this feels so catatonic, almost unnecessary in its cruelty. this is a horrible world no doubt. but whatever he inflicts to his female characters seems to be done purely for the sake of shock value, almost like an indelible grief or hurt or helplessness a MALE character has to overcome in his path to nirvana. it is never shown what the woman feels about her own violation, no impact of it can be seen on her own life before she dies or simply forgets and moves on (kinda telling of the author's attitude towards how victims ought to react...).

then lets talk about the male victims. daniel gets stalked, goo and gun and eli were all minors who trained under a man who unironically touches people's genitals and brags about doing so, olly gets raped, eli gets groomed (i will not argue here about this one), sinu is shown naked often with the woman who brainwashed him. not mentioned in the comic but should be pondered upon is the fact that jake and jiho were in juvenile prison, a place with alarmingly high rates of sex crimes. dg is an idol who deals with invasive fans (sasaengs in real life are legitimately terrifying). seongji and vin were the ritual vessels for a cult. but this aspect of their trauma gets completely brushed under the rug, as if even alluding to it would take away from their strength and uhhh, masculine nature.

much to be thought about his treatment of his own characters...

Point of view on some complaints :

Not many female actions

Female anatomy

I don't wish to start any war and i apologise if I have missed out on any point. I don't know if these topics have been already been said before. Criticisms and opinions are all welcome! Don't know if I'm late. It's be good if you also read "Lookismstuff" who has many good analysis points on PTJ lookism

-> Firstly, Not having many female action scenes:

Well, perhaps it's just a boys boys game ? It's not that PTJ deems women weak, or he won't have characters like Mary, Crystal (2nd body), Sophia, etc. Now, there have been many novels, comics, Webtoons solely based on strong females and that too, it's not limited to just action genre and in many of 'em the story mostly revolves around all the females of the story and barely any men, now please do not take this the wrong way

It's just like a theme? Or like just boys things that have nothing to do with gender roles. Especially considering the fact that many women don't join thugs and illegal gangs to get their life together, or love being involved in a thousand fights. Many women prefer a peaceful life, they can fight if they want to, but they like the liberation.

-> Secondly, female anatomy:

Even I was really disheartened with the style. But in the end, women aren't the only one being objectifyed here, men are too. The typical- buff, charming, flawless and handsome faces and some do seem over the top. That is usually overlooked by many of us. It's like a typical teenage-youth fantasy world with handsome men and women. Besides, PTJ has other anatomy styles as well like - Duke, old little Daniel, Crystal, stalker girl, Sophia, etc. So, I don't really seem to want to criticize the women anatomy here either

I'm not well versed in these things, but I hope my message has been conveyed. I don't know if it will come across many. You can criticize as much.

i know that daniel will probably be haunted by these words and wonder whether there's some truth to them but imo while jiho is right that daniel only got better as a consequence of having 2 bodies, jiho and daniel are very different people

jiho is right that they suffered similarly by being bullied for their looks and he is also right that daniel was able to escape that when he switched, but the things that sets them apart are 2 things imo: kindness and a fighting spirit.

you see, when given the opportunity, daniel chooses kindness. jiho has to be grudgingly coaxed into it. when daniel got his second body, he decided to use his privilege to stop jiho and duke from being bullied. he gave duke a nudge and duke ran with it. he tried to do the same with jiho and jiho got entitled. truthfully, if jiho had gotten a second body, i cannot imagine he would have done similarly. he simply would not have become the handsome and strong saviour of the weak. if anything, he probably would have cozied up to vin jin and become a bully himself.

i dont think daniel would have improved without the confidence his second body gave him and the opportunities it opened to him, but the thing with people is that most don't improve without some kind of support. while his mom tried his best, we see him hiding stuff from her since the beginning as to not worry her, so there's only so much she can do. once he got support tho, just a little, he thrived. jiho, well, is not the same way. he got it, but he focused on the wrong things, and, as the last chapter of his arc pointed out, his schizophrenia didn't help his situation and overall personality.

now, im not sure fighting spirit is the correct term, but english is not my first language so i hope i will be able to make clear what i mean.

so at the beginning of the story neither daniel nor jiho fight. they don't have the confidence, the strength, the technique, etc. they both learn to fight in different parts of their lives: daniel with his friends in an attempt to become better and jiho in prison in an attempt to survive. since they are in such different places for this, we cannot compare them. however, we can compare their spirit.

at every opportunity, daniel is trying to do good. when daniel has to make a tough choice, he doesn't shy away from it. he's making mistakes, and he doesn't let people stop him, but because he cannot conceive giving up now that he knows what he is capable of. on the other hand, jiho fought, sure, and we see he is taking decisive action, but all with the intention of getting a second body so he can escape. daniel even offers him a second chance, despite everything he did, which includes but it is not limited to trying to kill him, and he turns him away to try to kill him again. why? perhaps because it's difficult. it's easier to think you can't change. that way, you can't disappoint yourself. despite what he said, we know it's not because he actually thinks people dont change. his mind didn't conjure an image of his past self trailing after him like a spectre, like a whole ass different person, for nothing. in the end, when refused the chance to escape and fearing betrayal from jake, he committed suicide. jiho didn't sit on the edge the building by mistake. although he didn't know it yet, the moment he had stepped foot on the roof, he had given up.

tldr: despite their similarities, when given a little help, daniel chooses to be better, helps others, and offers second chances. jiho, on the other hand, doesn't.

prison arc jiho is simply nasty but his 48 untreated mental illnesses and the frankly biblical horror behind his soulless eyes have a baffling attraction similar to the morbid curiosity you would be possessed by before approaching a rafflesia blooming somewhere in the rainforests of indonesia... like i'm not saying i condone it but a part of me does understand how he rizzed up THE jake kim like i sort of get jake you know?

I just re-read and seems like I have a different opinion from the previous one

Many Jiho stan blame Daniel Park and justify the statement "Daniel can be successful because of visual". I think Jiho was wrong, not Daniel. Little Daniel was bullied just like Jiho. But he can survive and have friends. Vasco, Zack, Zoe, etc. They became friends since Daniel was fat. You could even say that Vasco was a friend who changed Daniel 180 degrees. Daniel learned a lot about life from his friends especially Vasco.

But Jiho. He doesn't want to learn from his mistakes and only blames the world. When he was still in school, he often did prestige like wear expensive brands, smoked and act cool even though he still look stupid. He made two mistakes. It's okay to make mistakes for times because nobody is perfect. But he has no willingness to learn mistakes. He was pretty different from Daniel and Duke.

Jiho is a type of friend which if you criticize in a gently way, he will get angry and accuse you of hating him because of some reason. He is anti-criticism, selfish, does not learn from mistakes and always blames the world.

I'm not Jiho's slander. I admit Jiho's character development makes a lot of sense and that's good. I am not the type of fan who judges bad character stan means justify the evil act. I'm also stan of the bad character in Lookism. But the thing is many Jiho Stan justify him and blame Daniel.

But I'm not surprised because there are so many people who are anti-criticism and only blame the world like Jiho.
