Qualits (pt. 1)
The wyverns of the stars who originate now at the Tree of Souls deep in the Abyss.
Prior to the tree existing, they once had a world of their own called Everveil. In this world they were the top predatory species and came in multiple different colors. Nine elements ran through their race with each soul attuned to a single element. On exceedingly rare occasions a dual element soul would be born but those were extremely unpredictable and often borderline feral without proper guidance and harmonious training for their elements to co-exist.
The elements are as follows: fire, water, earth, electricity, shadow, light, air, ice, and magic.
Those of the magic element alignment could display powers of any of the other types, though at a considerably lower power level than that of a qualit born with that element.
Over time fire element aligned qualits underwent changes in their biology to accommodate for their territory being near volcanoes. They lost their scales and gained feathers, becoming phoenixes who ceased to have a reliance on their souls rather than the soul-powered wyverns they’d once been.
On a similar note, water element aligned souls developed into their own separate species as well. They lost their wings but gained webbed feet and gills so that they could hide below the waves as sea serpents.
Now left with seven elements, the remaining qualits made cities and enacted a governing system. They lost themselves to their greed for power and desire for conquest and turned their gazes to the stars which they had once thought to have come from.
Strange dark magic begun to crop up in their pristine world, causing vast technological advances but at the cost of further eroding their values. Horrific experiments were conducted in the name of science, injecting this unknown tar-like substance into pregnant qualits and then confiscating the resulting eggs to observe the young.
One such experiment was the qualit Versila Silskiva whose father Raymos Silskiva sought a business deal with the head of the qualit government at the time. He had pledged his firstborn to become a test subject in exchange for the opportunity to work alongside the Head Councilmember Magnus Stonequil on compiling the results.
An unexpected encounter with one of the healer qualits who oversaw all aspects of injury recovery resulted in Raymos indulging his desire for control and he laid with the healer igna, who became gravid and bore a son, Nethreis.
Not wanting this illegitimate child to soil the Silskiva name, Raymos offered the child and his mother to be used in awful experimentation. Nethreis became a child soldier, taught nothing but how to kill, but escaped when he was fifteen during a cave-in Igna caused so her son could be free. Because he had unknowingly bonded himself to his mother, Nethreis took up the last name of Ignis in her memory following his time of grieving.
He became drafted into the capital city’s military and rose through the ranks swiftly due to his training. At the same time Versila broke free from the abuse she’d been under by her father and Magnus, resulting in the first manifestation of the entity known as Void who killed Raymos in an avalanche. Homeless, Versila wandered the streets looking for anyone to take pity on her as her mother, Havana Silskiva, had died not long after Raymos’s death from bereavement.
As fate had it, these two met. They had already met roughly ten years earlier when Igna had snuck Nethreis out to give him a taste of freedom and he had saved Versila from some bullies. But now they could begin a friendship and eventually romance.
They wed and were soul bonded by the Council with Magnus overseeing the union. A few months later Nethreis was dispatched to quell some unexplained qualit aggression and encountered the effects of prolonged exposure to the dark energy. This “corruption” drove their race mad, becoming feral and needing to be dealt with before innocent lives were lost.
The longer Nethreis was away on military missions, the lonelier Versila became. She had her job as a healer, something she’d wanted since she was young, but had few friends due to her hesitation to open up to others. Upon her discovery she was gravid with Nethreis’s child, she was involved in vicious rumors and forced to flee the city.
Nethreis gave chase once he returned, convinced she was unfaithful and unwilling to hear her explanation. The months of hunting down corrupted qualits had eroded his own questionable sanity and in a fit of rage he sliced through her throat, killing her but leaving her soul intact. The death was able to provide Void the energy to manifest fully as an abyssal creature and so she did, slipping away into the snow.
Nethreis, now distraught with grief, carried her soul with him until he at last could fly no longer and fell into a cavern, dying from the impact. Like Versila his soul survived and once he was assuredly dead, Void quietly stole away both souls.

breezy anon here - thanks for much for your answer! I absolutely agree that the SA is in-character for lsp, but I think my opinion of the episode was colored by 1) how horrifically uncomfortable I was while watching it 2) assumptions about the writing that I haven't really examined since I always skip breezy on rewatches and 3) how much younger I was when watching (1/2)
I think I also had a knee-jerk reaction to SA in kid's shows but you're absolutely right, it shouldn't be taboo, it's been referred to before, and the writing had a lot of strong points. thanks for sharing your thoughts! I probably still can't watch that episode again and I never liked lsp and finn scenes after it, but I can definitely appreciate the writing more now. my dislike of the new magic system remains, I'm afraid, but that's just personal preference and I see your argument for it as well
gonna try to respond to this point by point:
that episode makes everyone uncomfortable! it’s supposed to! i would absolutely never rewatch it for fun. its awful to watch. but it’s necessary and good
I can understand why thinking “this makes me uncomfortable” can equate to “so it’s bad” if you think disliking something means it’s bad. but also, interrogate that belief. just because you subjectively dislike something does not make it qualitatively bad, just as subjectively liking something does not necessarily, automatically make it qualitatively good.
I would not consider AT a kids’ show, and I say that as someone who watched season 3 of infinity train w my baby brother. but I’m not letting him watch AT until he is 16, because I think you have to be at least 16 to truly understand and appreciate it. watching it too young is how you get opinions like “these characters are flawed and therefore this show is bad” which is a take i see about this show constantly???? like seriously, if you go into AT expecting a kids’ cartoon, you are not going to get it. it’s like if someone watched utena and was like “I enjoyed all the magical girl hijinks until they brought incest into it out of nowhere wtf is this garbge?!?”
finn repressed the memory of lsp doing that to him, so there was no reason for him to treat her differently considering he literally. didn’t remember that. obviously that doesn’t make what she did ok, but it explains why their dynamic didn’t change.
it’s fine to dislike a component of the show, but I must reiterate that it’s not “new” magic. it’s a natural expansion of previously established lore that has been a part of the show since s1. mad bc they won’t let u into wizard city arent u

Friends: Latilda’s always up to make local contacts; whether in Free companies, local political units or even the darker scene. She’s mostly friendly but has more than a few secrets under her belt.
Contacts: Story sources! Lat’s always looking for an in on what’s going on around Eorzea as of late, mostly for her ongoing book writing and report submissions
A Tutor: While Latilda is trained in hand to hand combat, she’s nowhere near WARRIOR OF LIGHT levels of skill. Anyone who can teach her another skill would be grand. Oocly I’m planning for her to go Rogue/Monk/maybe Ninja spec-wise but we’ll play it by ear!
Rivals: Yeah, reporter types often tend to piss off those with less-than-splendid intentions. I’m all for a bit of conflict between them. Just don’t expect her to go easy. Or maybe you just think you’re a better writer than me due to ethical or qualitative elements. Who knows?
==Potential Hooks==
Reports: Maybe you’ve read one of Latilda’s books on Ul’dah Post-calamity. Maybe you’ve seen her interviewing local guards or merchants. Regardless, knowing her via her writing and research is always an open arc, and we’re happy to work with you to make it interesting for you.
Vigilante: Latilda’s strong sense of honor and justice often has her working outside of the law when things get bad; attacking and capturing local slavers and brigands for the local authorities.
Criminal Bounty: Due to her work, at least a few leaders have connected Latilda to her extraneous Vigilante work, and have put a bounty out on her head; preferably alive. So, need a target? Here’s your shot.
==OOC Information==
Who Am I?: My name is ____, but I prefer to go by Nerd. I’m a mid-20s graduate student. I’ve been RPing primarily in WoW (WRA specifically) and I’m looking to transition my main, Latilda, into the FFXIV community. I know next-to-nothing about Eorzea’s lore and I’m figuring it out as I go.

Writing Style: Para to semi-para postings are my usual style, all depending on my partner.
Platforms: I will happily write in-game with you, but Discord is recommended due to my issues of availability!
Restrictions: ERP is not something I’m actively seeking. I prefer to avoid anything with pedophilic or rape tones since almost every attempt at that is done poorly.

Thoughts on Powers of X #3
Gotta go fast!
Tumblr media
Pride and Grace (X^2):
This issue starts off on a pretty heavy note with a look at the religion of humans in the Man-Machine Ascendancy, and what we see is that humanity has constructed a religion around transhumanism and it’s entirely negative.
So here is the catechism of this religion:
“All humans are slaves,” and humans should “accept [the machines]] dominance.”
Human nature is inherently “fallen,” and in order to ascend humans must reject “every last shred” of their humanity.
Critically, humans must reject the “heretics” who preach biological transhumanism, both becasue of the inherent impossibility of “improv[ing] on our flawed design” and their mistaken belief in free will.
And then just in case you were wondering whether Hickman was going to be at all subtle in his belief that mechanical transhumanism is bad, he then shows us a baby being baptised into this faith by having half its face lasered off as it screams in pain.
On a more high-falutin’ level, the purple-clad cyborg priest’s concluding thought that “there is something perfect trapped in your flawed human shell” is Gnosticism turned against itself, from a religion that preached an egalitarian message of salvation through transcendant knowledge into a religion that denies the very possibility. It’s also not a good sign that the priest inverts Milton’s most famous epigram on individualistic defiance into a message of submission.
I find it very odd that so much of the fandom can read these pages and then turn around and call Krakoan culture a cult. As I’ll get into longer, Krakoan culture is all about proving and celebrating individuality as well as community, about rejoicing in the defeat of death, and the multiple layers of call-and-response rest power in the congregation as much as the preacher. If I had to choose between these two religions, I’d pick Krakoa every time.
And then the mutant resistance shows up bringing fire and the sword(s). And yet, in what is surprising for a group of mutants organized and led by Apocalypse, their tone is more disappointed than hostile. More on this in a bit.
Surviving Sol Mutants Infographic:
In this org chart, we learn about the mutant resistance as led by Apocalypse. Some interesting little details here:
Apocalypse has a new group of horsemen (we don’t learn that the first horsemen who Hickman has been emphasizing so much died during the fall of Krakoa until later), with Logan in the War role, Kuan-Yin Xorn as Death, North as Pestilence, and Krakoa/Cypher as Famine.
This group includes “Pureblood” (not wild about this label) mutants, Chimeras, and “Symbiotic” mutants, which covers pretty much every kind of mutant in this timeline in the same way that the All-New X-Men were designed to be internationally diverse.
While some of these designations - War for Wolverine and Death for the nihilist Xorn - make sense, there’s something really ironic about the plant-man representing Famine, and there doesn’t seem to be much of a clear link between North and the concept of Pestilence.
North as a second generation Lorna Dane/Emma Frost hybrid became a fan favorite despite uttering very few words, I guess because of the interesting combination of Magneto’s costume in Polaris’ colors and pink telepathy powers.
For her part, Moira stands in as “Mother” of the younger mutant team (which I guess makes Apocalypse the “Father” of the older team), making this resistance cell a Brady-style fused/found family.
I was wrong about which generations Rasputin and Cardinal belong to: despite the fact that Rasputin is named Rasputin IV, both she and Cardinal are third generation Chimeras. Cardinal’s powerset seems to include Nightcrawler-style teleportation as well as Jean/Rachel/Nate-style telepathy. No idea who Freeman corresponds to, but no one else seems to know either.
The Church, the Church is On Fire!:
On the other side of town, the Machine half of the Ascendancy reacts to the distraction attack. Omega Sentinel both seems to care more about humanity and be more human both in terms of her interests and her affect, while noted sociopath Nimrod the Lesser advocates for human genocide, just in case you were wondering who the bad guys were.
A further sign that we shouldn’t let our pre-existing knowledge color our interpretation is that we find out that the mutant resistance “have always sought to free the humans in some hope that together they might overcome the inevitability of” Nimrod. Needless to say, fighting to save “a world that hates and fears them” hasn’t exactly been Apocalypse’s wheelhouse, but it’s a sign that existential struggle changes all kinds of people’s characters in unexpected ways.
I really like the idea that mutants and humans are two peoples “divided by one language,” because it’s an interesting counter-point to Magneto’s argument in House of X #1 that a mutant language is a necessary precondition for cultural separation.
Further evidence for my thesis about AIs and analysis paralysis: Nimrod the Lesser’s obsession with trying to “disassemble the variables” and his total lack of interest in more qualitative understandings of his opposition leads him to delay just long enough to allow the resistance to get away with their data and unleash a singularity in his capital. Can’t help but see a parallel there with the Phalanx and other intelligences.
We move from there to a Highly Thematically Significant ecumenical debate between the cyborg purple priest and Cardinal, who describes himself as “a pacifist who’s been pushed to the brink” (much like Xavier?) and in the process has abandoned many of his own beliefs, even “overcome my genetic predispositions” for a higher purpose. (Which itself is thematically significant, given that the cyborg purple priest explicitly denied that one could avoid genetic destiny.) Cardinal wants to know why the priest would betray humanity on behalf of a malevolent divinity, but it’s not clear whether his own form of self-destruction is much different (although given that Cardinals deny the self, did the “terminal apocalypse seed” destroy his authentic self or create one?).
For his part, the cyborg priest chooses veneration of the Great Machine above all else, seemingly dying in a state of religious ecstasy. There’s also another interesting contrast being drawn here - after Magneto positioned the mutants as pagan “gods,” we have a decidedly monotheistic capital-G “god” in the form of Omega Sentinel.
Buying Time/Space:
As his X-Men prepare to go down swinging to buy him enough time, Apocalypse and his strike team make it to the data-base. I know that Hickman is usually described as more of a world-builder than dialogue wrioter, but I loved the line “I am older than even the idea of machines.” (Not so sure that’s true, Ancient Egypt loved itself some simple machines, but he could be referring more specifically to the computer.)
We also learn that the data they’re looking for is “when Nimrod came online,” which initially sounds unimportant...up until we see Moira and realize that historical data is priceless when you’re dealing with time-loopers.
Nimrod is alerted by Cypher/Krakoa’s accessing of the data, but it’s worth noting that Nimrod doesn’t know what they’re looking for. He’ll describe it as “old data and machine lore,” but he clearly can’t recall and hasn’t integrated the data that’s been acquired into his own mental framework - which raises the question of whether the Phalanx or higher ups do any better with the data they’ve consumed.
In the mean-time, Rasputin and Xorn unleash his singularity in order to sideline Omega Sentinel and buy their cause a little more time. There’s an interesting parallel with what Erasmus will do in House of X #3, but the singularity adds another level.
Omega’s question “do you have any idea of what lies at the heart of a real black hole” is even more ambiguous in the wake of Powers of X #5, where we learn that there are massive AI societies inside black holes. Is the Man-Machine Ascendancy a vassal of one of these, has Omega seen one? Or is she referring to a more abstract idea about the ultimate death of all things? (Watching A Brief History of Time messed me up as a kid.)
But just as the X-Men of X^1 underestimate the self-sacrificial tenacity of Orchis humans, Omega underestimates that of the X-Men and so a singularity is unleashed on Earth. Does this destroy the planet, in the same way that the singularity of the 4th Generation Chimeras wiped out Mars? Do Rasputin, Xorn, or Cardinal end up in another time/place as the tarot cards from Powers of X #1 would suggest? Is their desination one of the Titan Societies?
In a parallel act, Apocalypse sacrifices himself to get the data away. Even as Nimrod is giving his big speech about how Apocalypse is no longer the “fittest of all,” we see how the Big A has clearly moved beyond that conception of himself, to embrace a larger cause he’s willing to die for.
As Aocalypse is dying, Wolverine awakens Moira in her ninth life and kills her so that she can bring the data about Nimrod into her tenth life. Which is one main reason why I’m really skeptical we’ll see a reboot into an 11th life at the end of the mini-series, because otherwise why devote half or more of your run-time to what she’s learned in this life if the next one is the really important one?
Infographic of the Ninth Life of Moira X:
I just realized that Moira’s last name works as both a play on the Nation of Islam’s tradition of giving out X as a new last name symbolic of the heritage destroyed by slavery (although the X-gene probably gives that a different symbolism for Krakoan mutants), and the number 10. Yes, I can be really short-sighted sometimes.
So what new information do we get about Life 9?
Well, the Apocalypse War goes well for mutants for fourteen years, with Avengers World defeated three years later, and the Annihilation Wave repelled eleven years later. Crucially, however, Apocalypse is unable to prevent Nimrod from coming online in Year 50, and within six years the mutants lose most of their earthly power, forcing a retreat to Krakoa and the adoption of Sinister’s breeding program. This buys the mutants about thirty years, but Krakoa’s fall in advance of the collapse of Mars suggestsa that it was never more than a band-aid.
Note that once again Moira goes into a coma. Man, by this point, she and Emma are going to have plenty to talk about wrt to their Sleeping Beauty syndromes.

Long Term Weight Loss
I’ve received a few asks about scientific sources of weight loss, as there is so much of the ‘95% of diets fail’ myth going around.
First off, The myth.
Here’s a quote regarding the 60 year old 95% failure myth:
''That 95 percent figure has become clinical lore,'' said Dr. Thomas Wadden, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. There is no basis for it, he said, ''but it's part of the mythology of obesity.''
This is from a New York Times article from 1999... that was TWENTY years ago, and we are STILL using it as ‘fact’
“Dr. Kelly D. Brownell, the director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders, said the number was first suggested in a 1959 clinical study of only 100 people.“
And from the same 20 year old article:
But the study has little relevance to the current understanding of how to control weight, said Dr. Stunkard, who specializes in the treatment of obesity and eating disorders. The 100 patients in the study were ''just given a diet and sent on their way,'' he said.
''That was state of the art in 1959,'' he added. ''I've been sort of surprised that people keep citing it; I know we do better these days.'' (These days being 1999...)
Now that That’s out of the way, what does CURRENT research say?
Source - 2005
≈20% of overweight individuals are successful at long-term weight loss when defined as losing at least 10% of initial body weight and maintaining the loss for at least 1 y.
National Weight Control Registry members have lost an average of 33 kg and maintained the loss for more than 5 y. To maintain their weight loss, members report engaging in high levels of physical activity (≈1 h/d), eating a low-calorie, low-fat diet, eating breakfast regularly, self-monitoring weight, and maintaining a consistent eating pattern across weekdays and weekends.
After individuals have successfully maintained their weight loss for 2–5 y, the chance of longer-term success greatly increases.
Source - 2014
More than 87% of participants [in the National Weight Control Registry] were estimated to be still maintaining at least a 10% weight loss at Years 5 and 10.
Yes, A lot of these rely on the National Weight Control Registry. But that is because, as anyone with a basic scientific background will tell you, long-term studies take a long time to conduct. The National Weight Control Registry started monitoring participants in 1993, and concluded in 2010, a 17 year long study. It took two years to analyze the data and results were published in 2012.
And while 7 years may seem like a long time for lack of new research, we have to remember that there are ongoing studies that have been proposed, but won’t have results for several years.
The long and short of most any recent research on long-term weight loss is easily broken down. Lifestyle changes. If you change how and what you are eating and continue to do so even once you have increased your diet to maintenance calories, you will keep the weight off. If you lose 30lbs and then go back to how you were eating and exercising (or not) before weight loss, you are likely to gain it back
Source - 2015
Intensive lifestyle counseling improved cognitive restraint which was associated with enhanced weight loss among obese adults. Successful dieters also showed a long-term improvement of uncontrolled eating. Eating behavior should be evaluated and followed before and during lifestyle interventions in order to support the change, e.g. by finding methods to control eating at risk situations and strengthening motivation and tolerance to problems.
Source - 2003
We have come a long way in using protocols—structured, skill-based, group, and individual— to produce lifestyle change.
I believe that our lack of success in getting more people to make and achieve this change [at least 10% weight loss] has two causes: We focus too much on diet and not enough on physical activity; and we focus too much on losing weight and not enough on keeping it off
And Finally (because this is already too long), a short response to people who claim the National Weight Control Registry is faulty. Yes, it wasn’t meant as a measure of the whole population, but took people who had already had a degree of success. It’s purpose was to teach us what strategies are successful, not how many people can stick to them.
The Founders of the National Weight Control Registry write in 2003:
“Our purposes in establishing the National Weight Control Registry were 1) to identify a large group of people who successfully maintained weight loss; and 2) to quantitatively describe strategies used by these people to achieve and maintain weight loss.” [source]
So...
Is long-term weight loss possible? Absolutely, you just need to make LONG-TERM lifestyle changes.
Do upwards of 95% of people fail at maintaining weight loss? No.
Is the National Weight Control Registry a bunch of bullshit that won’t help us? No! It has provided valuable insight on strategies of maintaining weight loss, qualitative proof that it’s possible and research into the benefits of weight loss.

American football on the other hand. It isn exactly exciting to watch teams average 2 yards per carry and complete 30% of their passes and have to punt it 10 times a game. We have seen this time and time again and it is more often the case that they don't live up to the unreal expectations of first rounders. Well first off, that sentence is disastrous. What you have written is that you are starting to believe that you are in the correct program. Break it up into two halves. Rule 7: Official lore and fan fiction/fluff are welcome, but posting screenshots of official Games Workshop and/or Black Library material is not allowed. You may transcribe the text, however, and we request that you cite the book it came from. Fan fiction must be labeled, such as using [F] to denote such a post.. The cross dressers of Casa Susanna were involved in political change as well as personal transformation. Magazine that was established as a result of that retreat, Transvestia, called for not only public acceptance of the burgeoning transgender community, but also legal protection and general awareness, says Pardo. Use the word acceptance, but I also want to use the word appreciation this idea that we wanted to appreciate, and reinstate, these other communities that form part of our society. Even ab products are hard to access in my country, i somehow met with ab. And really it changed a alot. Especially i saw most effects with Hydrating toner/lotions. So maybe search on your school database or google scholar for articles, books or essay on sociological research and its methods. 함안출장샵 Just know that there are a lot of conflicts within sociology on qualitative vs quantitative, macro sociology vs micro sociology, even objective vs subjective analysis. So don be surprised if you find a lot of argumentative essays on the subject :). My husband came home one day with his irresponsible cousin traumatised and neglected ten month old cattle dog, when we already had four dogs (including a brain damaged 8 week old rescue puppy), and I had to talk myself out of homicide. Ten years down the line and that dog has completely restructured our lives (for example, he can cope without human company for even half an hour, so it like having a human infant you can take along to most places you going we gone through a LOT of baby sitters and never take holidays) and cost us a fortune, and I wouldn swap a second of it for peace and convenience. I always loved dogs, but I didn know I could love one as much as I do this guy.. Going after these accounts for reposting something the face of the brand posted to a public forum is ridiculous. I am not a fan of brands trying to silence content creators especially when this seems to be a common occurrence for the brand. 67 points submitted 1 month ago. After her and my dad divorced she kinda lost control of her life and I went to live with my dad at 7 and him and my step mom raised me. I spent my whole childhood feeling like I was never going to be good enough for my mom and she seemed content with saying she was just "not that kind of mom." At 18 I had enough and cut her out of my life. I didn't speak to her until I was 22 and it was because of my husband. Also, I am not sure anyone who has a TF wants to go through the pain of it. I love her and we will never be in separation again unless I decide, and I will never decide that again. She and I 함안출장샵 are in communication again after about 8.5 years of separation. Yoinked out and tested my bottle for you mine is from 2017, so it has had a fair amount of time to age. When I first received it, my complaint was that I only smelled rose and no ambers, and that it was pretty weak (needed a decent slather to get some mileage). I had hoped with time that the Amber and incense would come forward.
