Resurface 21 - Rely
What went before.
How do you prove you are who you say you are?
With a little dose of DINKY EARTH&SKY STORYTIME.
I agonised over the flashback being from Virgil’s POV rather than Scott who is supposed to be the one telling the story… but Virg very much took front and centre (is about time tbh cos it’s HIS story after all and Scotty keeps muscling in). So yeah it might be a jarring shift, hope you’ll forgive me if so and enjoy the mini earth & sky antics anyway xx
💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚
“Prove it.”
“I… what?”
“Prove you’re not Dad just trying to talk me down off the roof again so Scott has to leave without me.”
Scott’s blood was now red ice-slushie and his heart seemed to be struggling to pump it where it was needed. He was going to mess this up. He was going to let his brother down again. Was it even possible to logic him out of this? Probably not. But, now they were here, he had to try. He had to fix whatever it was that had prompted his brother’s fractured psyche to replace him with… a better version? His mind raced.
“Uh… ok. Ok! How about you ask me something Dad wouldn’t know.”
Virgil silently consulted to his left again, his eyebrows raising with a sudden idea. His head snapped back around and his eyes narrowed on Scott before he raised one finger to his own face and slowly drew a short line along the bottom of his jaw towards his chin. He didn’t say anything. He didn’t need to.
Scott had already unconsciously mimicked the action, tracing the marginally firmer texture of the almost invisible scar he carried there. A slight wash of relief ran through him as he realised he could answer this one very easily but their father could not have.
“Well it certainly wasn’t an argument with a barbed wire fence like we told Mom and Dad…”
💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚
“The math works, Virgil! The lift from the drones will be just enough to support the two of us into a glide then the wings will do the rest.”
Virgil eyed Scott’s pride and joy with a bucketload of awe mixed with a few shovelfuls of suspicion.
The flying machine’s body was the old carbon fibre kayak, consigned to the garage long ago when their attempt to navigate the nearby stream in midsummer left it slightly… holey… in places. The two of them had manhandled it on to the roof via the internal ladder in the middle of the night about three weeks ago. The swarm of eight small tricopter-drones Scott had requested for his birthday were attached (four across the front, one each wing and two to the back) with lots of complicated-looking knots Virgil hadn’t learnt at Rescue Scouts yet but his brother had practised for hours to perfect.
The main event - the wings themselves - were an ingenious combination of fishing poles, some chicken wire fencing Scott had liberated from behind the shed and a patchwork of pieces of an old parachute Mom had stashed away for a rainy (or last minute fancy dress costume) day.
It did look impressive but also maybe a little more… home made… than Virgil had pictured when Scott had explained his Big Idea.
“I’m not sure your math is the same as real life, Scotty…”
“Sure it is! In high school you do real life math - it’s called physics and its all about balancing up forces with down forces. I checked my calculations with my physics teacher last week. She thought it was brilliant. It will work.”
“Did she know you were planning to do it in real life though?”
“Of course not, 11 year olds aren’t meant to be able to fly. It’d cause a fuss.”
“Hmm.” Virgil scratched his head and tried to figure out why the flying machine made him uneasy. It wasn’t just that the stitching of the parachute to the mesh was somewhat wobblier than Virgil had drawn in the neat plan they’d sketched together. nor was it the fact he could see daylight through some of the gashes in the boat.
“Did your sums include using duct tape?” Scotty had for sure used a lot. A lot of a lot.
“It’s really strong. Ever tried to unstick it from something? Impossible! Nothing unsticks what duct tape says should be stuck.”
“Ok.” Virgil’s voice was small because it was being squashed by big feelings. Some excited and proud ones. Quite a lot more scared ones. And some guilty ones.
And some deep misgivings about whatever “physics” was.
Since leaving them to go to High School Scott’s brain had been full of so many clever new things and he was so confident and excited. Virgil felt bad for not trusting him. After all, Scotty always made the crazy ideas work and then his eyes would twinkle with the annoying “told you so”. They always came out ok because Scotty wouldn’t let Virgil get hurt.
His big brother suddenly crouched down to look him in the eye. His eyes were soft behind the sparkle.
“You don’t have to do it if you’re scared Virgie. 11 years olds aren’t supposed to fly so I guess 9 year olds are even more… uh… not supposed to fly. It won’t matter, you could just watch instead and…” he frowned in thought “I would just need a weight about the same as you to strap to the seat behind… so the math still works. Hmm, maybe a rock or something…”
Scott trailed off and looked around them as if expecting to find a ideal Virgil-sized boulder just waiting there on the rooftop. Virgil hoped he wasn’t going to have to help carry one up the ladder.
Except, no. Of course he wasn’t. Scotty wasn’t going flying with a rock. Not while Virgil was around. His brother could always rely on him to always be right there at his side. He gave himself a little shake, put his hands on his hips and pulled what he thought might be a strong, reliable face:
“You need a wingman. That’s gotta be me. It can’t be a rock, that’s just silly!”
Scott beamed with obvious relief. “Alright short stuff, if you’re sure?”
Virgil was developing a talent for deadly glares and directed his best scowl at the lanky beanpole towering over him. His brother just seemed amused rather than appropriately terrified.
“I’m not that short Scott. I’m nearly as tall as Mom.”
“Yeah well Mom’s teeny. Dad calls her his Li’l Lightning Bolt cos…”
“She’s not! She told me we are the normal ones and you and Dad are secretly Sasquatches hiding from the FBI!”
Scott’s chirpy cackle was loud and long and Virgil glowed with pleasure at making him laugh, even if it hadn’t been his own joke originally. Then a little pang of worry hit him.
“Do you think they are alright?”
Scott squeezed his shoulder. “Of course they are, I promise. Baby Gordon just needs a bit of looking after at hospital because he’s even teenier than you...” Virgil gave him his best killer glare “… and Mom and Dad are just keeping him company. She’s alright Virgie.”
“Yeah.” Another squeeze then his brother stood up tall and together they surveyed the view.
Scott checked his new watch then licked his finger and put it up in the air. His very serious and important expression was a bit spoiled by his tongue sticking out to the side as he concentrated on working out the wind direction but Virgil suppressed the giggle. This was Scotty’s big moment.
“Alright, if we are gonna do this it needs to be now. Wind’s good and Grandma and Grandpa will be back with Johnny in about 20 minutes.”
“Aye aye Captain Scott!”

Aren’t these just the sweetest little scottie dogs ever? I just adore their patchwork look! I feel like this type of glassware/look has a certain name but I can’t think of it!

I love advertisements from the 1930′s simply for the plethora of Scottie dog sightings, but this image is also neat because, while printed on paper, it looks like a patchwork quilt. This Du Pont Dyestuffs advertisement for “Deep Red and Orange Prints” is published in the May 1934 Rayon and Melliand Textile Monthly.

The Birds and the Bees
Pairing: Jim x Reader
Word Count: 2661
Warnings: angst, jokes, animal injury, Jim injury
A/N: This was a request by @thefabulousgosling! Hopefully I did it justice. I was fighting through a serious case of writer’s block trying to write this lol. Also “Kovas” is the Baltic god of war, which I thought was a funny name for the bird! I only did a brief reread so if there’s any mistakes please feel free to point them out and I’ll fix them!!
“Are you out of your goddamn mind?” The ensign in front of you flinched away from your voice, rising like the red in your cheeks as you puffed yourself up. “This is an entirely unknown species - an avian species, no less - and your first instinct is to shoot it?! Why don't you give me that blaster and we’ll see how you like being shot you piece of-
“Woah, woah slow down,” Jim said with a chuckle, grabbing your hands before you could lunge for the ensign’s blaster. “It's just a bird.”
You snatched your hands back. “Just a...just a bird? We’re the ones invading its territory. Ensign Jessup had no right to shoot it. Just a bird. God that's like saying my bed is just a bed.”
“Okay, I get it I’m sorry, but what do you want me to do? It's against policy to bring unknown creatures onto the ship.”
“It's also against policy to bang your lead zoologist and yet here we are.”
Jim blinked quickly, trying to come up with an adequate argument, but gave up almost as soon as he’d started. Whatever trouble he’d get in for bringing the bird on board was nothing compared to the trouble you’d give him. He raised his hands up in surrender: “Fine, but the bird is your responsibility. If it gets out or mauls an ensign it’s on you.”
“My hero,” you said sarcastically before grabbing your backpack. You dumped the contents on the ground, hoping it would work as a makeshift carrier for the time being.
The bird squawked in fear as you approached, attempting to fly away. It lifted itself an inch off the ground before tumbling back down, scattering iridescent blue feathers and green blood across the ground. You took the opportunity to throw the bag over it and scoop it up, zipping the bag shut. The bird struggled in the bag as you shouted for Scotty to beam you back up.
After much coaxing, you convinced the bird to come out of the backpack in your office. Jim had brought a few pieces of fauna from the planet in hopes he’d win back some of your favor and even agreed to postpone leaving a few days so the “botanists can continue studying the planet’s surface.” At least that's what he’d said. You knew he was trying to give you time to patch up the bird.
Kovas, as you’d taken to calling him, healed like a champ. He healed nearly three times as fast as birds on earth and, with the added help of the osteo and dermal regenerators, Kovas was happily walking around your lab. His wing wasn’t healed enough for sustained flight, but he managed to flap them around enough to make a mess of your lab. While you thought it was cute, your coworkers disagreed, counting down the minutes until Jim asked you to let the bird go.
With a heavy heart and much arguing, you finally agreed, beaming down to the planet with Kovas perched on your shoulder, nibbling on your hair. You kissed the top of his head. His feathers felt coarse and firm. Almost like catfish spines. He nuzzled his beak against the underside of your chin and you felt a pang of grief as you raised your other arm for him to hop onto. Kovas did happily, allowing you to set him back onto the ground.
“Be good out there, Kovas, okay?” He tilted his head at your voice. You cleared your throat as you stood, trying to ease the tightness growing there. It was stupid to get so worked up over a bird you’d only known a couple days and yet still knew next to nothing about, but here you were.
Jim sensed your distress and took a step towards you, brushing his fingers against yours. You smiled weakly at him and nodded. Your sign that you were ready to go before you changed your mind. Jim made the call to Scotty and you felt the all too familiar sensation of the transporter picking you up. You waved one last time at Kovas.
As the gold light wrapped around you, you heard a terrible sound. Harsh and grating and filled with sadness. It morphed as you listened, twisting into what almost sounded like the word “No.” Then you felt a sharp impact to your chest, sending you staggering back as your feet finally touched back down on the Enterprise. Your arms went up instinctively, cradling your chest and the weight against it. Kovas stretched his beak up against your chin again, spreading his good wing out around your arm.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Jim said.
After attempting to let Kovas loose on the planet surface three more times (including once when Jim went by himself and came back with his hair ruffled, shirt in tatters, and Kovas clinging to his arm like a bat) Jim finally agreed to let him stay on the ship for “scientific study.” You and Kovas hardly left the lab after that, eager to learn everything you could about each other.
The first thing you noticed was his diet. Kovas was mostly carnivorous, preferring to nibble at pieces of chicken or fish than the oats and seeds you’d offered him. Another interesting discovery about his eating practices was his beak. Initially it seemed to be very similar to a cockatoo’s beak, but as soon as Kovas ate you saw it was also hinged in the middle of the bottom jaw, allowing him to open his mouth in three parts. Needless to say, you nearly fell out of your chair the first time you’d seen it.
The second thing you noticed was that he seemed to be nocturnal. It was a difficult transition at first. The days on Kovas’s home planet were longer than days on the Enterprise, but you did your best to help him adjust, spending most of your nights with Kovas in the lab to ensure he settled in. It was during one of these sleepovers that Kovas finally spoke. Well, kind of spoke. It sounded more like a child learning a new word, but it excited you all the same.
Kovas’s vocabulary quickly grew from a few single syllable words into patchwork sentences. He was even able to call your name when he wanted attention. You encouraged him excitedly, pushing his vocabulary and his motor skills. He could open boxes and play with toys - his favorite was a stuffed mouse on a string.
“He’s so amazing,” you explained to Jim over breakfast. “Every day I learn something new about him. God I can’t wait to see how he reacts to birds on Earth. They look the same physically - I mean, Kovas is much bigger obviously - but they’ve got some really similar mannerisms and-” Jim cut you off by standing up abruptly and skulking out of the mess hall. You stared after him, words still hanging off your tongue, and looked at Bones for an explanation. He shrugged and dove back into his breakfast.
You were in your lab with Kovas going through some flight exercises to help his wing heal when the door opened behind you. Jim hovered there, more unsure of himself than you’d seen him in awhile. He fidgeted with the sleeves of his uniform shirt as he stepped in and focused his gaze on Kovas instead of you.
“Hey, babe,” you said as you stood from your chair, pressing a kiss to Jim’s cheek. He tensed lightly under your touch and you pulled away worried. “What’s wrong?” You tried to run your hand through Jim’s hair the way you knew he liked, but he took a step back from you. Your heart sunk.
“I haven’t seen you in days.” His voice was barely a whisper, eyes still focused on Kovas as if Jim didn’t want him to hear.
You laughed. “What are you talking about? We saw each other at breakfast.”
“And all you did was talk about this stupid bird.”
“He’s not stupid,” you snapped back. “Kovas is surprisingly intelligent and has shown an aptitude for-”
“This is what I’m talking about,” Jim interrupted again. “We never see each other anymore and when we do you’re always going on about this bird. I’m glad you’re happy. I’m glad you’re advancing your career, but I miss you.”
“I’m right here, Jim.”
“But you’re not.” Jim turned away from you, running his hands through his hair. “You know it was our anniversary yesterday? I cooked dinner.” You sighed, checking your watch to confirm the date. It couldn’t have possibly been your anniversary already. That was supposed to be weeks away.
“James...I am so sorry. I don’t know what happened. I just….I just lost track of time. I-I had a gift for you and everything. It was gonna be so romantic. God, I’m such a mess.” You ran your hands down your face, noticing for the first time how tired you felt. You could remember the last time you’d slept a full night period, let alone a full night in a bed.
“I have a gift for you, too.” Jim looked down as he fished around the pockets of his uniform pants. Whatever he pulled out, he kept closed tightly in a fist as he looked back up at you. “Our feathery friend aside, these past couple years have been the happiest of my life. I’ve been trying to come up with ways to show you how thankful I am, but I couldn’t get Bones to agree to starting a flash mob on one of the observation decks, so hopefully this will do.” Jim cleared his throat to keep his voice from shaking and slowly sank to the ground. Your heart leapt to your throat. “I thought exploring space was the greatest adventure, but it’s nothing compared to loving you. I want to spend the rest of my life waking up with you and having water balloon fights in the hallways and giving Bones’ gray hairs. You with me?” Jim opened his hand to reveal a ring that glittered under the fluorescent lab lights, and you couldn’t help but let out a squeal of excitement.
Nothing about this moment was how you’d pictured it. You thought Jim would propose over dinner. That you’d be in something nicer than a pair of old scrubs and a lab coat. He’d get down on one knee looking up at you with the same lopsided grin you fell in love with. Then, he’d stand and you’d pour all your love into that next kiss to let him know you felt it too. That he was safe with you and you were safe with him. You certainly didn’t expect to hear Kovas screeching as he lunged at Jim.
“Baby,” Kovas yelled, talons out, already tearing at Jim’s yellow shirt. “Don’t hurt my baby girl.” You sprang into action. Jim was on the ground, covering his head with his hands as Kovas snapped and tore at skin and clothing alike.
You sprang into action and pulled Kovas off Jim as quickly as you could. He flapped against your clutches, eager to sink teeth and talons back into Jim as he chanted “jealous Jim” in something eerily similar to your own voice. You hissed at him to stop but he continued taunting Jim like a child on the playground.
“Get to Medbay,” you implored Jim. “I’ll join you in a second.” Jim slinked out the door, eyes never leaving Kovas. As soon as the doors to your lab slid closed, you let him go. Kovas danced around the floor chirping happily.
“Man who hurt you is gone. You're safe now.”
You crossed your arms and squeezed your eyes shut, reminding yourself that, despite his superior intelligence, Kovas was still just a bird - a young one at that. “Jim was not hurting me.” You said it as simply as you could to avoid any confusion.
“No,” Kovas responded shrilly. “Jim always want to take you away. Jim make you yell. Jealous Jim.”
“Jim doesn't want to hurt me,” you said, kneeling on the floor in front of Kovas. He was so big know you could almost meet his eyes at this height. “Jim wants to take care of me like I took care of you.”
Kovas cocked his head to the side, puzzled. “But who takes care of Kovas?”
You reached a hand out to stroke his cheek and he pushed his face against your hand, chirping happily. “You can take care of yourself. You're old enough. Don't you miss being around others like you? Your family?”
“You are family.”
“Jim is family,” you countered softly. Kovas looked away from you and hung his head, suddenly interested in preening the feathers on his wing. He seemed to understand the error in his thinking now.
“Kovas is sorry. Sorry to Jim.”
“Do you want to tell him?” Kovas bobbed his head eagerly and you couldn't help but smile, letting him jump on your shoulder even though he was getting too big for it.
Jim’s heart rate spiked on the biobed as you and Kovas entered. You’d only seen this kind of fear in his eyes a few times and never expected you would have anything to do it. You felt a pang of guilt for bringing Kovas on board, following by an even greater pang of guilt for wishing you hadn't, especially when Kovas so clearly needed you. It was a difficult situation to be in, but it was clear you’d come to the climax: let Kovas go or lose Jim.
Thankfully, Kovas made it easy. He jumped from your shoulder onto Jim’s bed. His large wingspan made Bones recoil and Jim sink further into the bed. Kovas took a few steps forward, lowering his head and tucking his wings back.
“Kovas is sorry, Captain.” His voice was low and serious, hanging in the air with such sorrow that you wanted to take him in your arms again. “Kovas only wanted to protect, babygirl.”
“That’s not her name,” Jim snapped.
You stepped forward and put a hand on his forearm. “It's what you call me. He thinks it's my name.” Jim rolled his eyes. Kovas started his apologies again.
“Kovas knows Jim is a nice Captain. A good captain. He is smart, kind, and has a good ass.” His voice took on a lilt like yours again as he continued and you covered your face with your hands, ears turning red. “Jim will take care of baby girl for Kovas, and Kovas will return home.”
Jim eyed Kovas warily, finally relaxing. “Can't argue with that.”
And so you found yourself yet again on the surface of Kovas’s home planet, knees against the lush Earth and arms clutching the feathered body in front of you. You wanted to remember every aspect of him from the hard feel of his feathers to the faint metallic smell they gave off. Kovas nipped at your hair, wanting to remember as deeply.
“I’ll miss you,” you whispered. It took every ounce of your concentration to keep from crying.
Kovas bumped his beak against your nose but turned away when he heard a bird call like his own. He called out to match it, spreading his giant wings and taking off while leaving you kneeling in the dirt behind him. You watched Kovas disappear into the trees before you finally stood.
Jim stepped towards you, one arm in a sling and the other going around your waist. He kissed the side of your head and nuzzled his nose against your ear. “I'm sorry you had to let him go.”
You shrugged. “I’m not. He has is family. I have mine.” You looked to Jim and he smiled.
“Your fine ass family.”
“Shut up,” you laughed, pushing him lightly.
“Ow,” Jim winced playfully, cradling his arm against his chest. You rolled your eyes. “What? You're not gonna kiss it better?”

Q’s Cats - Head Canon
Tumblr media
Q’s Cats
Q fell in love with his first cat at three years old when the neighbour girl was gifted a kitten for her birthday.
Unfortunately, other than Redbeard whom Sherlock adored, Mummy and Dad felt it was just too risky for them to have any other pets given Sherlock’s tendency to experiment on anything and everything -- as Q knew from personal experience -- and no amount of pleading, whinging, or begging would change their minds.  So young Rembrandt (Remy) Holmes had to bide his time and pine over the neighbour girl’s cats from afar -- she and Q didn’t get on well, to no one’s surprise -- until such time as he maintained a flat of his own. Q has been the caretaker of four cats since finishing Uni.  He has loved each, and each has at least acknowledged his presence in their world.
Kai
Kai, the Siamese, was ten weeks old when young Rembrandt adopted her from the RSPCA only four days after he graduated Uni.  Kai with her open, affectionate nature charmed her new Papa the moment they were introduced, and the two bonded quickly, settling in together in Remy’s small flat in Clerkenwell.  The introverted Remy didn’t have many visitors, but Kai seemed to love everyone she met: except Mycroft.  Kai earned Remy’s eternal devotion -- as well as a weekly fresh ahi tuna snack -- when she swiped at Mycroft’s face, ensuring that the interfering git never returned to Remy’s flat so long as “the bloody beast” was in residence.  Mycroft still bears a small scar on the right corner of his mouth from the encounter.  The slight downward turn of the mark has left Mycroft looking, even more, the grumpy arse than he had before the incident.  Though long since gone,  Remy still thinks fondly of his first feline companion.
Button
Remy adopted two-year-old Button a month after Kai died.  A true short-hair moggie, he was named such for the grey, button-like marks that dotted the cat’s flanks.  Much more aloof than Kai had been, Button would deign to grant Q affectionate moments, particularly when Q was overly stressed with his increasing responsibilities at MI6.  Button was a wanderer, but he knew how to keep out of catfights and always returned home when it was meal time.  Button would often sit in his bed on top of the cabinet in Q’s office and watch the boffin when he coded or tinkered through the night.  Often the sole listener of Q’s brainstorming sessions, the cat likely had a greater understanding of engineering and cybersecurity than 98 percent of London.  He, too, managed to keep Mycroft away.  Button died of aggressive kidney cancer when he was only seven years old.
Emrys
Remy didn’t adopt Emrys so much as Emrys adopted Remy.  Only a week after Button’s death, Remy (now known as R at work) was drawn into a narrow alley not far from Vauxhall Cross by what he thought was a baby crying -- all of his personal security training at Six flew out the window at that moment; he signed up for a refresher course the next morning.  Instead of an infant, he found a small kitten curled up behind a trash bin, half-starved, and soaking wet from the rain.  Remy scooped him up, stowed him in the inside pocket of his anorak, and hailed a cab to his new flat instead of walking the rest of the way in the rain.  A sleek, black mouser, Emrys is all about his toys and his human.  He loves to play.  He loves to play with Remy and can grow a bit depressed when Remy is kept away long stretches at work.  With his black fur, atypical blue eyes, and ceaseless curiosity, he reminds Remy somewhat of Sherlock, and Remy nearly named him Scottie, but the moggie is a veritable wizard when it comes to solving the complex cat toy Remy created for his treats, and so Emrys seemed more appropriate.
Homer
Remy adopted Homer just a fortnight after Skyfall.  Now the Quartermaster -- with all the demands on his time that come with the title -- Q felt increasingly guilty at leaving Emrys alone so often and determined that a companion would be the best option.  At nearly a full stone, Homer is a monster of a pure-bred Russian Blue and the most loving and kind of any cat Q has owned which given the horrific abuse the animal suffered is a miracle in and of itself.  The moggie’s face and upper torso are a patchwork of scars left behind from the knives his previous “owner” used on him.  When the RSPCA rescued the cat from that hell, they discovered that damage done to his eyes was too extensive, and they had to be surgically removed.  Homer is blind.  Russian Blues are known for their intelligence, and Homer is living proof of that for he has adapted brilliantly to his disability, and has little problem navigating Q’s flat or the Q-Branch tunnels during those times that Q brings the cats with him to work.  The laid-back, introspective Homer is the perfect companion for the energetic Emrys who has taken it upon himself to act as the blind cat’s guide of sorts, leading them on many an adventure through the tunnels at Six.   Homer and Emrys continue the long-standing tradition started by Kai and followed up by Button:  After the incidents of last November, Mycroft has sworn off ever again visiting his littlest brother at his flat.  Q, James, and Alec now take turns purchasing the fresh ahi tuna snacks.

Things To Do In Death Valley National Park
We are excited to share this guest post from Matt at Ditching Suburbia. Him, his wife and 7 kids share their experience at Death Valley and all the places they recommend you stop!
As we drive away from amazing places, we will often say to each other, “We’ll have to come back”. With so many Things To Do In Death Valley National Park, our tent camping visit in 2016 wasn’t enough and we went back in our RV in 2019 (but don’t worry if you don’t have an RV there is a great hotel on site!).
Death Valley gets really hot in its off season. Though some do visit in the summer, and staff live in the small town of Furnace Creek year round, it really is more of a winter destination. In the winter it’s beautiful, nearly the perfect temperature, the star gazing is great as the air is still a bit cold (which I hear helps), and the animal life isn’t hiding from the sun as much.
One thing to note about Death Valley is that there is a lot more life here than the name suggests. Though it’s a desert, there are plants and animals that make this their home to which our kids like to call it valley of life in protest of it’s given name. When you visit, keep a watchful eye for all the life here.
Badwater Basin
This is the lowest point in all of North America. At 282 feet below sea level, this basin of salt crystals is one of the main attractions for visitors to Death Valley National Park. This is truly a surreal landscape with a salt plain that is crisscrossed with a patchwork of hexagon formations that look like inverted cracks on white concrete.
We went in the late afternoon which is a great time to go as the sun shines on the mountain behind you and you can see, 282 feet up the mountain side, a sign that shows where sea level is. Late afternoon is also a great time to go as the sun casts long shadows of the patchworks onto the white salt giving a great light and dark contrast.
This is a popular place and depending on when you go you might have a hard time finding parking. It’s a decent sized parking lot, but there are a lot of visitors too. There is also an outhouse that is equally busy when the parking lot is.
After parking you walk out onto a small boardwalk that leads to a long trail through the salt flats. There were foreign tourists speaking many different languages and some walked barefoot saying they would pay good money for a foot treatment like this back home. Our kids kept their shoes on as the salt would sting tiny cuts in their feet (from all the other times when they don’t wear shoes when they should).
Devils Golf Course
On the road from Furnace Creek to Badwater Basin, there is a turn to the west that goes to Devils Golf Course. Here you will see a large area of salty mineral deposits that were formed long ago and are now shaped by wind and rain water. Though it also has salt crystal formations, being a few feet higher in elevation from Badwater Basin this place is dry as the rainwater pools in Badwater Basin and not here.
Salt Creek
One of our children’s favorite places here is Salt Creek where a long boardwalk traverses vegetation and the water. This place looks far from what you would think you would see in Death Valley.
The creek below the boardwalk is home to pupfish, a tiny unique type of fish that are adapted to live in this environment. They are a bit hard to find, but there is a trick. Stand right next to a small bush that overhangs the creek and give the bush a light shake with your foot and watch for the fish to dart out.
Life
In addition to the pupfish and their adjacent plants, there is a lot of life throughout the valley to look out for. Notice the plants, birds, and trees (with our favorite being the palm trees) at Furnace Creek. Devil’s corn field is another place with living plants. The best for us though was seeing an elusive kit fox crossing the road – so be on the lookout for one of those.
Dante’s View
One thing to note about Death Valley is that it is full of contrasts. With the distinction of having the lowest point in North America, it’s sometimes easy to forget about the enormous mountains that surround the valley. The best place to get a view of these extremes in elevation is the overlook at Dantes View.
At over 5,400 feet in elevation, the clouds were surrounding the mountain, the parking lot and obscuring the view. From the lookout we only got glimpses of the valley below through occasional gaps in the clouds which made us feel like we had climbed Jack’s beanstalk and could only occasionally look down on the land below.
We did it during the day but apparently the best time to venture up to Dante’s View is early morning to catch the sunrise. You need to get there early so you can watch as the sunlight first hits Telescope peak on the other side of the valley before descending the Panamint Mountains and eventually across the basin. It gets really windy and cold up there so you will probably want to dress warm with gloves and something to break the wind.
While you are up there, you should do one of the hikes. There is a fairly easy trail that goes to the north and has it’s own spots that are great for a lookout. As we hiked, the clouds parted and the sun shone through giving us a great view.
Scotty’s Castle
This attraction has been closed for years due to flooding. Apparently in October of 2015 there was so much rain that it destroyed parts of Scotty Castle and the road up to it. So you’ll have to wait until it reopens to visit (hopefully 2020).
Ubehebe Crater
We didn’t make it to Ubehebe Crater as it was over an hour drive from our campground on the road that also splits off to the closed roads to Scotty’s Castle. The fuel prices in Death Valley are very high, so we decided that we would save Ubehebe for next time when we can do both it and the castle on the same day. We were told that there are trails to explore and that you should schedule no less than 30 min to see it (and that’s if you don’t hike the trails).
Racetrack
Way beyond Ubehebe Crater is the Racetrack, a flat valley where fallen rocks that have left trails behind them as wind and ice have slowly moved them across the landscape. Driving here is a risky endeavor as the long dirt road is covered in sharp rocks that frequently pop tires. A park ranger told us that people often need to be towed out and that the bill for towing is over $2,000. Potentially being stranded in the desert with an impending huge tow bill didn’t appeal to us so we skipped this.
Artist’s Drive / Artist’s Palette
This was my favorite place this trip. The Artist’s Drive is a colorful one way road that loops away from and then back to Badwater Rd. This thin road was fun to drive as it goes up and down small hills and around sharp curves.
What’s best about Artists drive is all the colors on the rock formations around you. Being colorblind, colorful rocks have never a big deal to me before. However, last year I was given a pair of Enchroma color correcting glasses for the colorblind and driving Artist’s drive with them on was unreal.
Along the drive is a parking area where you can look out on what is known as the Artists Palette. This is a colorful rock formation that is well worth a stop as it’s pink rock swirls seem to glow in the sunset. There are lots of things for you to see in Death Valley at sunset, so stay several nights and be sure that one of those sunsets you are at Artist’s Palette.
Golden Canyon
Golden Canyon is a great hike for the whole family. The parking area isn’t very big, but it’s not as popular as some of the more heavily visited areas so you should be able to find a parking spot without too much issue.
This trail is where the old road used to come into the valley. We didn’t hike to the end and eventually turned back, but there were several small outcroppings that the kids had fun exploring.
Zabriskie Point
As you come into the valley off highway 190, you will drive right by Zabriskie Point. We all enjoyed going here as the trail was easy to walk up for some amazing views.
The best thing here is the colorful rocks and how the sun makes them look like they are almost on fire. Though you can’t really see the valley, you still have a unique view as there is a stark contrast between the colors of the more immediate Zabriskie rock formations with the Panamint Mountains in the far background. It’s really cool.
Harmony Borax Works
This is a small historical stop just north of Furnace Creek. They used to mine borax here and take it out of the valley with a 20 mule team. It’s an easy stop and our kids liked looking at the ruins.
Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
One of our kids’ favorite places in all of Death Valley is the sand dunes. These are your quintessential sand dunes and though they don’t go on forever, the area is big enough that you can spend a long time here.
We went just a little before sunset along with with seemed to be every photographer in the park. The parking lot is probably big enough when it’s not sunset, but by the time we got there, there was only parking in the non-paved sections on the outskirts of the lot.
The dunes are fun to climb, slide down, and of course wrestle. Our children had a blast playing king of the hill and having a free for all wrestling match to see who could get to the top of each dune first. If you go at sunset, the shadows are long and make for great photos.
Star Wars
If you are a fan of the original Star Wars (and you should be), much of the Tatooine scenes were filmed in Death Valley. Go watch the movie before you visit for a fun way to interact with the scenery.
Where to stay
RV Park – Stovepipe Wells – there are full hookups for RVs and access to a swimming pool. There are also cheaper primitive sites with no hookups. Years ago we tent camped (though there are RV spots) at Furnace Creek which is a beautiful place right near the Visitors Center which is great for the evening ranger programs.
Hotel – The Inn At Death Valley – Located right in the middle of Death Valley is a beautiful hotel with a spring-fed pool and a restaurant on site.
Getting Around
You will need to drive everywhere. The valley is huge and depending on how long you stay, plan on having to fill up with overpriced fuel at least once.
Internet
Verizon (don’t know about AT&T or T-Mobile) internet coverage is spotty. We were offline most of the time and many times couldn’t even get a signal for phone calls. Ask the rangers and they can tell you where the sweet spots are for coverage.
Video
Here is a video of when we Crazy Family Adventure visited Death Valley in 2016. You will see we visited a lot of the places that Ditching Suburbia recommended!

SPODOMANCY noun | spo·do·man·cy divination through the examination of ashes
It’s bleak.
It’s worse than that, but how do you find the words?
Some days, it all comes bearing down like a crushing weight from which there’s no escape, a weight which no shoulders can hope to carry. The sheep are dead, and dogs are gone. There’s no rainbows and tens of thousands of people are trapped in amber, not dead and with no chance of living. Cities are emptied. Buildings are shattered, warped, jarring, Frankenstein patchworks of where two universes have tried to occupy the same space.
And what was once stable, where they’d dared to hope to see healing, now there’s this.
Wreathing flames, long-burning and yellow-white at the edges. Smoke in the air. Ash everywhere – on his skin, in his hair, in his lungs. In his blood. And him and Liv and Scotty and a quarantine device and an overwhelming sense of the unfairness of it all.
“We’re gonnae figure something out,” she tells him, and it’s almost fierce. An attempt at levity, too. “Worst comes tae worst, y’can always come live with me.”
But today there’s no succour in her smile, no refuge in humour.
“And what about everybody else?”
In the hot grey ashes settling over the grotesque, organic mass of amber consuming another city, he reads this future:
A war that can’t be won. A whole universe collapsing, over one stolen little boy, and everyone falling with it.

Further words to add to this… it might be a slow one as life is complicated right now, and I have a backlog of half written comments I owe people which I should be spending the time on but sometimes the boys jumpscare me with little moments so I will throw out snippets as I have them.

But other times were better.
Times when Virgil sat by his bedside and Scott would half open his eyes and they’d just look at each other for minutes on end. The unmistakeable blue would be clouded in sedation, the whites still tinged with red the delicate skin around the edges puffy and still a patchwork of too many colours. He couldn’t really talk, the drugs keeping him from screaming and trying to run on a half healed femur were too strong. Yet occasionally he would frown a little before huffing a sudden urgent breath, a twitch of the fingers entwined with Virgil’s telling him Scott was trying to communicate something important.
“I love you too, Scotty.”
Virgil knew his brother was in there, still being held prisoner in the dark even while his body was here. So he’d hold his hand and stroke his hair and gaze back at him as if he could reach in with his eyes and guide his brother to the surface. Into the light.

We just learned that Elvis Christ passed away this week from a terminal illness. . For those of you who don't know him, he was a SF Bay Area resident who periodically taped a patchwork of sound bites on the sidewalks in North Beach and the Mission and sometime elsewhere. They varied in content and sometimes were quotes from Shakespeare and other poets. Basically they were positive energy. . So today we say farewell and put some quotes out there...Beam me up Scotty. To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before… . You can see lots of his messages on our website. https://www.streetartsf.com/tag/elvis-christ/
