Extra paragraph breaks, and some commas, added for accessibility.
Maskull pulled himself out of his trancelike meditations and, viewing the newcomer in greater detail, tried with his understanding to account for the marvellous things told him by his intuitions. Ae possessed broad shoulders and big bones, and was without female breasts, and so far ae resembled a man. But the bones were so flat and angular that aer flesh presented something of the character of a crystal, having plane surfaces in place of curves. The body looked as if it had not been ground down by the sea of ages into smooth and rounded regularity, but had sprung together in angles and facets as the result of a single, sudden idea. The face, too, was broken and irregular. With his racial prejudices, Maskull found little beauty in it, yet beauty there was, though neither of a masculine nor of a feminine type, for it had the three essentials of beauty: character, intelligence, and repose. The skin was copper-coloured and strangely luminous, as if lighted from within. The face was beardless, but the hair of the head was as long as a woman’s, and, dressed in a single plait, fell down behind as far as the ankles. Ae possessed only two eyes. That part of the turban which went across the forehead protruded so far in front that it evidently concealed some organ.
Maskull found it impossible to compute aer age. The frame appeared active, vigorous, and healthy, the skin was clear and glowing; the eyes were powerful and alert—ae might well be in early youth. Nevertheless, the longer Maskull gazed, the more an impression of unbelievable ancientness came upon him—aer real youth seemed as far away as the view observed through a reversed telescope.
(You can read and download this book here on Project Gutenberg. There's also a lot of audiobook versions for free on youtube or the web archive since this book is public domain. There's also a completely inaccessible musical you can try listening to I guess. Does not have subtitles and I can't understand a word they're saying, but it exists.)

Rant about the book Jom is reading
Tumblr media
The book Jom is reading from is Khan Chang Khan Phaen, a Thai literary classic. It is folklore from Siphon Buri and was only written down long after it was conceived.
The story by modern standards is quite problematic, I have summarised the story below but there is a TL;DR below this paragraph;
Khun Phaen (previous name, Phlai Kaeo), Wan Thong (previous name, Pham Phi La Lai) and Khun Chang were childhood friends, Shun Chang is handsome whilst Shun Phaen is balding. Wan Thong would fall in love with Khun Phaen and Khun Chang would fall in love with Wan Thong and they marry but he was sent to command an army to Ching Mai. During his absence, Khan Chang came up with a scheme to get Wan Thong to marry him, by lying that Khun Phaen was killed in action, it worked and Wan Thong was unwillingly married to him. When Khun Phaen came back, he found what happened and tried to get Wan Thong back, despite him finding a wife in Chiang Mai already. He kidnap Wan Thong from Khan Chang, getting a 3rd wife in process. Each side would kidnap Wan Thong back and fourth a couple times which led to a trial by Phra Phanwasa (meaning the Queen mother), the matriarch of the Kingdom, which ended in Wan Thong being executed for not wanting to commit to either men.
TL;DR a woman gets stuck in a love triangle between a man she loved which betrayed her trust and a man she didn't love who treated her well but their relationship was based on lies. In the end she was executed for not committing to a relationship. (Who could blame her to be honest)
Parts of this epic is actually mandated in Thai schools (I had this for one of my Thai midterms, lol) and in the education system, they focus on the literary rather than the historical context behind the epic.
Many scholars such as Sujit Wongthes believe that this epic is actually a story about a fictional hero of the Suphannaphum Kingdom, one of the kingdoms that would become Ayutthaya in the 14th century. The Suphannaphum dynasty would rule Ayutthaya for much of its early history, which might explain how the story is so widespread.
Sujit believes that many aspects of the epic is representative of the early history of the Suvarnabhumi (not the airport) region, such as
Khun Phaen being a name for the Hindu god of creation, Brahma
Khun Phaen's magical sword, the "Fa Fuen" is named after an ancestral god of the Nan and Luang Prabang region.
When presenting the "Fa Fuen" to Phra Phanwasa, she placed it next to the Chai Si sword, which is representative of the Lao-Khmer origins of Ayutthaya.
All in all, Sujit argues that this folklore is more rooted in the ruling classes than the popular folk. This analysis of Khun Chang Khun Phaen is not present in the episode though, as this would ruin the mood of it so much.
But its inclusion even though it seems out of place (Suphan Buri is in the central parts of Thailand whilst the story is set in the north), is actually not that weird. In the period of the series, Bangkok has just had a major reforms to local administration, ditching the Mandala system in favour of western style centralisation based on colonial administration in the Dutch East Indies. This had the effect of Bangkok suppressing Lanna culture and a "Siamisation" of Lanna. Yai's family who I presume is local administrators sent from Bangkok shows this very cleary, he doesn't try to blend in with locals, he speak the central (Siamese) tongue and reads Siamese literature.
The inclusion of this epic rather than using something most Thai people already know to create the scene, it also creates the historical backdrop in which the series is set.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk. I might talk about Sunthon Phu, which Yai recited whilst drunk and also talk about the historical context behind the series too. Please tell me if you are interested.

I was thinking about how in EP7, Yai is extremely open with his affection and careless about being seen, while Jom is the one to try to get him to stop.
Which, in hindsight, is a little weird. Jom is the person from the time period where being queer is allowed and is being more accepted as normal. Jom is physically affectionate with his lovers as we see in EP1 when he's with Ohm. He initiates touch very often and is comfortable with it.
Yai is the one from the time period with little to no education or exposure to queerness, living in a rigid household where expressing queerness in any way is a death sentence.
I think Jom being more nervous and wary is an indicator that despite the progress in the 21st century, we're still nowhere near the normalization of queer existence and affection. Jom is open, but he is also likely aware that there are still a lot of people and lots of social structures that discriminate against queer existence. He experienced this unfairness when Ohm cheated on him with a woman who is preganant, whom he is getting married to. Jom can't have kids or get married. It's freaking painful to learn that the very laws and restrictions that hurt queer love has been so pointedly used to hurt him by someone he loves. It's not the government or some stranger who hurt him using the things meant to restrict his life, it's his BOYFRIEND.
So when he's put into a situation where the social structures are more obvious, he adapts to it. Probably to protect himself from the personal hurt that he's afraid is going to come from Yai, and the social consequences. Which is really sad tbh because it highlights just how far we still have to go.
Yai, on the other hand is young, likely sheltered and idealistic. He's also a romantic and seems like an optimist. We know he knows being queer can be fatal because of the opening of EP7 with the murder of the lesbian couple who got married. But we also see him in a bar for queer people, he's seen The Green Queen find happiness. There is a community however secretive and small it is, and Jom likes him.
Jom, who is combative, doesn't stand for injustice, helps those who are around him and willing to suffer punishment for them, who openly talks out against his master/lord(idk how to translate his position) and criticizes literary works that are probably not openly questioned (I'm guessing here based on the scene where they're reading Khun Chang Khun Phaen).
So to Yai, loving Jom openly is natural because he probably thinks Jom would be right with him on the "fuck the system" thing at least for a little bit. Jom's already given him the courage to fight back- we see it with Prik. Yai knows it's hard to change things, but he will try his best if it's with Jom by his side because he gives him hope for a bright future.
This is so heartbreaking because we the audience know that even in the 21st century, queer rights are a struggle. The fight still goes on. Over a hundred years after Yai's time and it's still going. It's bittersweet to know that Yai's hopes will come true, but not in his time, not anytime soon for him.

Loveless Heroine
Tumblr media
Pennueng was reincarnated into one of the most well-known Thai folklore epics, “Khun Chang Khun Phaen”. To be more precise, she woke up as a younger self of the infamous female lead, Wanthong ‘Two Hearts Bitch’. The nickname she was unfairly given before sentenced to death for appearing indecisive toward the contesting of marriage to her. All because she couldn’t decide which of these two abusive men to be with! The handsome accomplished man but a philanderer that this body originally fell in love with or the ugly wealthy man who obsessively faithfully loved you? …Screw that! I’m not choosing any of you! THE COAT OF ARMS OF SIAM
From 1873 to 1910, a heraldic style coat of arms (Tra Arms) became the national emblem of Siam (renamed Thailand in 1939). The Western-style coat of arms was created at the command of King Rama V. The king ordered his cousin Prince Pravij Jumsai to design the arms for him. The armorial emblem contains almost all the elements of a European coat of arms; however, all the components of the emblem are traditional Thai royal symbols. The emblem is called the Phra Ratcha Lanchakon Pracham Phaen Din Sayam.
The escutcheon or shield is divided into three quadrants. The first (chief) quadrant depicts an Airavata on a yellow field. This quadrant represents the Thai heartland, the three heads of the elephant represents its northern, central and southern regions. The lower left quadrant (dexter base) depicts a white elephant on a red field. This quadrant represents the Laotian suzerainty (the symbol comes for its native name Lan Xang, land of a million elephants). The lower right quadrant (sinister base) depicts two-crossed krises (one with and one without a scabbard) on a pink field, this represents the Malay (Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu) suzerainty in the south.
Above the shield is the symbol representing the Chakri dynasty, a disc and a trident (Chakra and the Trisula). The shield is then surrounded by the chain of the Order of the Nine Gems (representing Buddhism) with a chain and pendant from the Order of Chula Chom Klao (featuring a portrait of King Rama V).
The arms contains all the six Royal regalia of Thailand. The shield is crowned by the Great Crown of Victory, with a ray of light emitting from the top. Besides the shield are two seven-tiered Royal umbrellas of state. Crossed behind the shield is the Sword of Victory to the left and the Royal staff to the right. In front of them are the Royal fan and flywhisk (to the right and left, respectively). And finally on the compartment, a golden multi-layered royal seat, are the Royal slippers.
The motto is in the Pali language written in Thai script: “Sabbesaṃ saṅghabhūtānaṃ sāmaggī vuḍḍhi sādhikā” meaning "The unity of a people come together as a party shall be a guarantor of prosperity”. This motto was composed by Ariyavangsagatayana, the Buddhist Supreme Patriarch at the time. The supporters of the arms are two mythical creatures. To the left of the shield (dexter) is an elephant lion (a lion with a trunk) or a Gajasiha. To the right of the shield (sinister) is the king of the lions, the Rajasiha. The two supporters represent the two ancient departments of Kalahom (Gajasiha) and Mahatthai (Rajasiha). Kalahom was the department of the Military and the south, while Mahatthai was department of the civil service and the north. The mantle around the arms is the cloak of the Order of Chula Chom Klao, tied with pink ribbons (pink being the colour of Tuesday, the day of King Rama V’s birth).
Today the coat of arms is still used as the cap-badge of the Royal Thai Police and is the official symbol of the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy.[29] The Courts of Justice and the Supreme Court of Justice also uses the arms as its official seal.

Story of Kumantong | Kumantong-Benefits-and-Effects | How to pray to Kumantong? | Kumantong Mantra Story of Kumantong Kumantong LP Yaem Kuman Thong, it's the same as any other animistic beliefs and practices. From its earliest starts, it was a belief that spirit existed in every natural item, even if it was a lifeless object. In a future state, this spirit would live as part of an immaterial soul. The vision, therefore, was thought to be universal. Kumantong (KMT) is a divine child spirit which is believed to bring luck and fortune to the owner if appropriately revered. It is said that KMT is in fact a baby ghost, however they have to accept Buddhism and do no harm prior to they are offered the status of "Kumantong", or "golden little young boy". Kumantong LP Yaem The belief in keeping ghost babies originates from the 19th-century impressive 'Khun Chang, Khun Phaen' by poet Sunthon Phu. The morbid act of the lead character barbecuing his coming child and summoning its spirit to safeguard and converse with him. In spite of these fantastical origins, the belief in these spirits grew prevalent in southern Thailand, and manuscripts were composed detailing how to create Kumanthong and their protective powers. These beliefs have actually spread out even more south since then, to the island country of Singapore, where they have taken root in a strong sub-community that is as pervasive as it is obscure amongst the population. Like most idols, amulets, and ornaments, Kumanthong are expected to bring their owners plentiful luck however just if they are taken care of properly. kumantong LP Yaem In the story, Khun Phaen was a high-ranking basic very near to the king, sponsored by an effective witch. The sorcerer loved Khun Phaen a lot that he married Khun Phaen with his child. Regrettably, after getting married and the better half was pregnant with her very first kid, Khun Phaen caught her father-in-law. He learns that his better half is loyal to his father's inducements, planning to toxin him. In a fit of anger, Khun Phaen took out the baby from his wife's womb. With bloody hands, Khun Phaen lit a fire at the temple, put the child's body covered in a spiritual cloth and wished. While Khun Phaen recited his prayers, the fetus turned into a dry, paper-thin skin wrapped around a skeleton. When the ceremony ends, the child becomes a powerful spirit with which Khun Phaen can talk, interact, and from there become his guardian. They can take action in a way to assist a fellow human being today. Kuman Thong will follow the owner's heart. They will be excellent and try to make enough benefits to entangle their past karma by assisting their owner to get an opportunity to be reborn again in a more lucky realm. Numerous Kumanthong sellers also advise the owner to look after this doll. Particularly, buy for him toys, sweets, milk to worship. Some individuals also devote that simply needing correct care, Kumanthong will help homeowners get fortunate, do a fortune, win the lottery game, and so on. Kumantong Benefits and Effects It is believed that when properly revered, the spirits of Kumantong will bestow great wealth and success to their owners. Many also believes that Kumantong will appear in dreams to tell their owners of winning numbers of the lottery. Believers also trust that Kumantong could guard and protect their properties and homes from burglaries or against anyone who might have bad intentions towards them. According to a master well known for making Kumantong (Phra Ajarn Patana), he said that as we are not able to control certain circumstances in life, especially those which are created out of collective karma, eg. Economic crisis events. In such a condition, the spirits of Kumantong would bestow spiritual clarity and spiritual guidance during difficult times so that owners would avoid getting into any financial troubles brought on by the collective karma of the world. In the same way, Kumantong can't change
the winning lottery number to what you have bet on, instead, they may show you winning numbers which will be drawn in the future. How to pray to Kumantong? Praying to Kumantong is not as complicated as many would think. When it is convenient, a hard-boiled egg, some candies and a glass of red-colored drink would be enough as offerings. For people who have busy schedules, placing just a small tray of candies and a can of red juice or soft drink would be fine. Offerings of 5 incenses and a lighting a yellow candle is often recommended, it is believed that communication of owner's heart with the spirit of Kumantong is established via the flame of the candle. In the year 1960s, we came to know that Southeast Asia is recognized as a communist threat, one of the examples of this is the Vietnam War, as well as the locus of “secret wars” in Laos and Cambodia. The interesting background of colonization of Southeast Asia has continued into the modern era: the British in Burma and the Malaysian Peninsula, the Dutch and the Portuguese in Malaysia and Indonesia, the French in Laos and Vietnam, as well as the Spanish in the Philippines. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, only Thailand survived the European colonial threat in Southeast Asia due to centralizing reforms ordered by King Chulalongkorn. In overall, the development of literature in Southeast Asia involves elements of this crossroads of influence.
Would you believe in me if I tell you that Southeast Asian literary works are not bound by books? In an Early Modern Period they using a palm leaf or bamboo and a sharp knife, then the dark ashes were rubbed on to make the cuts stand out. Aside from this, there is also another form of writing they use the skins of animals as their paper and etching on hammered sheets of metal. The way they use this style of their writing the more they enhance their skills in terms of creativity. However, because of this way of writing some of the original copies of their work are lost.
Traditional oral literature, folktales, proverbs, riddles, legend, and epic stories are attached to the mind of the listener. Only later were tales set in the form of stone inscriptions. The verses of historical charters or constitutions are often included in the very open definition of literature in Southeast Asia. Some people distinguish Southeast Asian literature as natural and melodramatic love stories and heroic epics. Still, the beauty of a tale did not reside in the uniqueness of the theme, but rather in how well it was adorned.
In the country of India Ramayana by Maharishi Valmiki is one of the largest ancient epic stories in world literature. It is an ancient Indian epic that consists of 24,000 couplets divided into seven books. I was amazed when I knew that this epic story is all about the life of Rama, who is a legendary prince of the kingdom of Kosala in India.
In the part of Thailand “The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen”, is one of the most notable works in Thai literature. It is a very long Thai epic poem which originated from a legend of Thai Folklore. The work's entire length is over 20,000 couplets. This epic story narrates the daring and amorous struggles of the three main protagonists.  I highly recommend this book for those people who love a historical romance.
Here is the example line in the epic poem of Khun Chang Khun Phaen
Now everything's a disaster. I left my home to come and sleep in the wild where there are no lights, only the moon, no roof, only the shade of a tree.
Oh, the misfortune of being born a woman! I should be happy, but I cannot be. I went astray in love's pleasures without thinking of shame. Because I wasn't strong-willed, I now suffer.
It's a waste to have beautiful looks, a pretty name, and a gentle manner if you have a terribly wicked heart. The good in me is the best in the land; the bad, nobody can match.
I can't be angry at Khun Phaen. Out of love he had the nerve to come after me, and spirit me off to the forest, unafraid of the clamor of a court case. He offered his life in exchange for me, Wanthong.
I can't quit now. I have to go with him. Whether I die is down to fortune.
In Malaysia “The Malay Annals”,  written by Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munshi, is one of the most important Malay historical works, and one of the great literary works written in Malay, that has been handed down in various versions. There were at least seven versions of this text. These historical works of literature have a breathtaking plot twist.
While I was browsing on the internet about the folklore and myths of Southeast Asia, I came across a reference to the legendary Himmapan Forest which got my interest. This forest is said to exist somewhere between India and Nepal. They said it is the home of an assortment of mythical creatures. I also found a page about the Myths of Origins of Indonesia. There are different versions and manifestations of the Deluge.  I can’t believe that an archipelagic region would have tales such as these.

And the amulets blessed or made by Luang Phor Paan are believed to have that power to untie / unlock things that are holding you back from your ultimate success in life and in career.
