How ‘androgynous mind’ by Sonic Youth influenced a video and photography project

Music influences my work to a substantial degree. One example of this in practice was during the unit ‘visual thinking’ from my first year of MCAST. This unit brought me great joy, as it allowed me to experiment with scrapbooking, zine-making and the concept of fragmentation. Needless to say, it was perhaps the most fun I have ever experienced when working on an academic project. This concept of fragmentation was adopted for my Independent Media Practice final work as well, which will be discussed in another blog post. Prior to Visual Thinking, I did not consider the influence that music can have on an audio-visual production’s research process. I had coincidentally fostered a minor obsession towards the band ‘Sonic Youth’ during this time. They are an 80s rock band which were unlike any other. Their music was wholly alternative, quite literally through their use of alternative tuning (see what I did there?) and their ability to re-appropriate what they have. What they did have was cheap guitars. This was a humble beginning, but through these alternative tunings they managed to create a unique sound and amaze the public with little money through the power of re-appropriation. I own their album: ‘experimental trash, jet set and no star’, and at the time during around 2019, this album was on repeat every day. I looked through the list, and a particular track: ‘androgynous mind’ struck me. Now we brainstorm. Androgyny. The act of combining what is masculine and feminine into one ambiguous form. This has been done for many years, however in Malta is considered a bit strange. The terms ‘Raġel-Mara’ or ‘Dak/Dik trans’ said in a derogatory manner ring a bell. Upon looking back on my influences in both art, fashion and music, I have amassed a list of inspirational individuals. David Bowie, Brian Molko from Placebo, Tim Curry as Dr.Frank’n’Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Matty Healy from The 1975, the list could go on. Moodboard in hand, I dressed my subjects. Subject one was a teenage boy. I dressed him in a long, black kimono with pink flowers and black jeans with one ripped knee. He wore clip-on gold earrings reminiscent to those of the 1960s, a gold necklace with black stones, and finally I painted his nails red. His fingers were fully adorned with rings. His makeup featured blue eyeshadow, red lips, and a lot of black liquid eyeliner on his eyes and eyebrows. His look in terms of clothing was directly influenced by Matty Healy, who had worn a very similar outfit on stage before. The makeup was Tim Curry inspired, and the nails and jewellery were reminiscent of what traditionally feminine women were expected to wear back in the day. My first subject was the star of the show. My second subject was only involved for the photography process. A little girl, around 10 years old, but with a ‘Do Not Mess With Me’ stark look plastered over her face. Her eyes were heavily lined, she wore a white plain t-shirt, with a heavy black blazer and black suit trousers and boots. Her hair was scraped into a ponytail and her femininity was not accentuated. She was inspired by Joan Jett most of all, and she was designed to confuse. The photoshoot was completely improvised. Since it took place at my grandmother’s house, I took advantage of the old-fashioned décor and any items that could generate thought, such as political or religious texts. After the photos were taken, they had to be transferred to a print medium. I chose to create a zine reminiscent of the 90s Riot Grrl scene. The end result was interesting commentary and was structured through different photographic clusters or mini chapters. I intertwined each photo cluster with lyrics from musicians who dared to break the feminine/masculine mold.
